    Kagi Search free alternative?

Hi, I wondered if there was a free alternative to something resembling Kagi Search. I know it's a premium search service with features like AI summary and super great search results, but I don't feel like paying for it in the long run.

Kagi search seems to give me equal, if not BETTER, search results than Google Search. Whereas DuckDuckGo does not, and it often feels like the relevant/best search result is harder to find. But yeah, I don't want to pay for Kagi's search.

Does anyone know a free search engine that comes close to Kagi Search? I dislike the results of DuckDuckGo as they often feel irrelevant compared to a plain google search (I often don't find the best results first, as I would on Google Search).

Can't set Aurora store to open play.google.com links (Samsung OneUI 6.1)

It gives me the option to turn it on in the settings, but as soon as I exit the menu, it turns off on its own. I've tried to disable google playstore as well as remove its permissions, because I suspected it was that but the problem persists.

Moving a Business Away from Google Services

Hi All, there's plenty of people in this group, who have moved away from Google Services for the purpose of personal use. But lately, I've been considering moving a business away from Google to alternative services. This alone poses a whole new task, as the alternatives still need to be somewhat intuitive, easy to use and understand, and work to a degree in a collaborative environment.

We have considered moving Gmail to Fastmail, Docs to OnlyOffice, and could storage from Google Drive to a Synology NAS.

To be honest I feel my greatest concern is actually the NAS. Managing and securing a server would certainly not be something I'd hand the keys over to anyone to do. Even accessing the NAS through a VPN can be a whole new level of frustration. Apart from this, we no longer have a unified system that just works together like Google Workspace does.

So, this one is probably aimed at a small portion of the this sub, did you move a business away? What services did you use as alternatives? Is there perhaps another cloud storage provider that works well? Or, is the move away from Google just not worth it in most cases (we find benefits in both options)?

Search engines that display the hits count

I used to enjoy very much the results number given by Google, but now it has been removed.

What alternative search engines still have this feature?

    Google Play Service

I turned my Google Play Service. But was surprised that some of my contacts were erased on WhatsApp. The chats were there, but only the number and not the names. I might have some contacts on my memory card and some are in Google. How can transfer them all to my memory card so I can turn off the Google Service?

A Search Engine that displays number of results

Like the title says, especially with Google no longer showing the number of results without userscripts, and the AI nonsense making search more annoying, is there another search engine that displays the number of search results? It needs to also support exact search, and ideally lets users restrict domains as well. That is all I really care about.

Edit: It appears Yahoo gives an estimate of the total number of search results. I can't believe Yahoo is going to be on my bookmarks in the year 2024. One annoyance seems to be that if there are 0 results, it will remove exact-search without telling you. Still, seems to be the best we have at this point.

Any suggestions for a simple, privacy based smartphone?

I rarely use my smart phone anymore. Honestly, for the last couple of years it is a huge waste of time more then anything else for anyone who owns one. I was thinking about getting a new one when the phone that I have reaches its end. Currently I have my eye on the ''HTC Desire 22 Pro'' since I hear its not a bad phone and it is relatively cheap nowadays. I wanted to hear what you guys think.

P.S. You can suggest the so called ''dumb phones'' for other users who might want one but I personally am looking for a standard smartphone.

Iv been trying to get this accomplished for a few months now but everytime I have free time to start I cannot figure out where to start or what to do. new phone, how to degoogle?

successfully obtained Motorola Moto G52 bcos a webbed site said it's degoogleable and I've seen people recommend it bcos cheap. already was forced to install tiktok and had absolutely no say in it and could not reject it so that's. a thing.

but anyway uhhh how degoogle? is there a tutorial thing somewhere? please bear in mind that I am stupid :3 so if you tell me to go to the schminkleflorp post in the plinkyplonk thread I will not understand bcos I do not know reddit very well. I trust myself to degoogle a phone bcos I'm good with that kind of tech thing but reddit is not my strong suit.

but yeag I now have degoogleable phone!! now what do ._.

any recommended operating systems/methods of degoogleing for this specific phone? links to tutorials would be mega epic cool.

    thank :p

p.s. I know this probably falls under the "low effort" rule but I am genuinely clueless so can't put in any effort bcos I don't even know what kind of effort to put in :3

Alright friends, I need a new search engine

After hearing Google is trying to switch to more AI when I already hate AI search results, I am over it. I was reading a few posts and they all have different suggestions. So I'm just gonna list some things and see if you guys can help direct me :)

    Most important things to me:

    1. Functional image searcher with little to no AI image results. I am an artist and CONSTANTLY use image search for drawing references. The recent uptick in images being AI generated is frustrating me because the anatomy is never correct, and that's the important part of searching for drawing references.

    2. Boolean search. I learned this in high school and it immediately made finding what I need for drawing references or research easier, so I was sad when it stopped working properly on google.

    3. Doesn't push AI articles above actual helpful things, preferrably doesn't push sponsored/paid search results in general.

    4. Easier to get results from smaller websites? There's really good small websites out there and it's a shame they're all getting swallowed.

    5. Privacy (?) I have been using the internet for 10+ years without being worried about my privacy, I'm probably already doomed, so it's not the most important to me but would be nice.

also, is using the Brave app wise? I am using it for its adblocker and will consider another app if it's better and has an adblocker.

    De-google leftover

Google has embedded its system software into OEM ROMs, granting excessive system permissions. These permissions are found under directories like /etc/permissions, as well as in their overlay APKs. Unfortunately, there’s no privacy or LineageOS ROMs available for my device. When I attempted to manually remove core APKs (such as GMS and GMS Service Framework), my phone slowed down and experienced random freezes. However, AFW+ helped address connection slowness by indirectly blocking leftover connections from Google’s overlays or libraries. These connections were affecting internet responsiveness, but now they give up on delaying the connection until they receive expected responses from their cores.

Despite these improvements, the remaining permissions are still annoyances. This raises the question: what’s the next step? While the G-killer is an option, it’s no longer maintained. Additionally, the DSS Magisk module doesn’t seem to work on Android 14. It would be great to share your experience and post your addition ideas on your De-Googled phone.

    Android Play Store alternative

Hello, I've been using Aurora Store with no Google account and no Google services for a long time but it stopped working for a month before and now it happened again for almost 2 months so I'm looking for a more reliable alternative to the Play Store that doesn't require a Google account while letting you download regular apps, not just open source stuff like on F-Droid

    Thanks

Search engine that doesnt show tosh

I was wondering if anyone had a good recommendation of search engines that don't show those crappy AI-looking news sites I always seem to find that are about 6 pages long and give a whole backstory to every part of your problem in order to provide more ad-space.
    Realistically it would prioritise:
Forum answers (for tech issues, I'm tired of searching up "my issue reddit" in order to find solutions)
    Academic articles (I'm a student)
Wikipedia (for when I'm looking up general ideas)

Maybe a couple of other reputable sites but I wanna remove "21 alternatives to (whatever I searched up)" from my search results.

Is Ente.io a good alternative to google photos?

    Hey,

I'm looking for a whole alternative for Google photos and I found Ente, which prodives everything I need. Does anyone have experience with it? I have some questions:

    1. What's the uploads speeds?
    2. Does the images/videos get compressed in any way?
    3. Whats the overall performance of the app?
    4. Does the app starts to slowdown if the user upload large amounts of images?
    5. Is there a feature like in google photos where people on photos get grouped?
    6. Are there any features someone who switched from Google photos to ente noticed?

    Custom Android builds

    Hi there,

I'm working on a thing for my job that requires tablets locked to a specific app. I read a bit about kiosk mode? It sort of works for my applications, but we wanted a bit more. Maybe a custom boot logo, a stripped down Android build since it will be viewing multiple HD streams at once from multiple PoE cameras.

I need to make sure the end user can't access anything but the app we're using to view cameras. No menus, stores, wifi, etc. Possibly booting straight into it upon turning the system on.

Are there any resources available to build something like that?

Google Maps API (voice alerts )

I need to create a mobile application in Kotlin language with Google Maps API. Can I use voice alerts or how do I do this? like this->(turn right, turn left, route to position X) Is there a map API you can recommend?

    Project Assignment---->

Objective: Provide audio directions for people with visual impairment or visual impairment

    development of a mobile-based application.

The aim of the project is to provide guidance for the stops that the disabled person will use as a transportation point.

    is the realization of an audible system. The application can be designed in two ways;

    • It can be used with a route that will work on the map in real time or,

    • By creating a custom map whose markers are determined by you, you will be able to set your own

A map layout can be created with markers.

Scenario and Prompts: The user speaks the destination/marker to the phone, the input is entered into the text.

and then the location of the person on the map is determined. After location detection

the person's location and the closest stop (or custom map that you specify).

a route between the marker (which could be a marker in the scenario), followed by voice prompts and

The user moves to the relevant stop (marker). “Go straight 10 meters, turn right, 5 meters later

turn left", etc. to reach the correct target. Directional sounds are certain

a limited set of templates. The case for avoiding obstacles on the road

will be ignored for the moment. But if the obstacle avoidance part of the route is done

extra points will be awarded. When the user reaches the stop (marker), the voice guidance will end.

Is it just me or is it a pain-in-the-arse to install Divest?.

So I got as far as flashing the image with fastboot in the zip files name and I tried to reboot to the new custom recovery but now it bootlooped a couple of times and now I'm at a Google logo boot screen. I'm trying to install this on an old Pixel 6 that I bought a couple of weeks ago. I'm not looking for advice on how to proceed at the moment. I'm just wondering if anyone else has the same problems.

Automatic backing up photos and contacts

I wasn't prepared the last time. My Pixel 4 running CalyxOS completely died and I lost everything on it. The worst being photos and contacts.

I know (now) that CalyxOS has the Seedvault feature that I will definitely use on the new phone.

But I'm looking for a real-time back up system, that will save new photos and contacts as they are created.

If it helps all my PCs run Linux, and I'm no stranger to self hosting services.

Great phones fro custom ROM's and Rooting

So I asked this in another sub without much replies hahaha.

What woudl you say that is the easiest phone to work with rn? I rooted and downloaded a lot of crap when I had a OnePlus 6T, lowved working with that. Now I know that OnePlus has locked their bootloader, that was really the main great thing about it.

So what I want, a flagship device, bootable with lots of roms available. But I don't have a clue what the scene nowadays is. The phone should be for like a three year period?

What do I want to do with it? Route traffic though tor probably and just proxy the f out it.

I found a small youtube alternative

https://scabidi.com/video This is an alternative to YouTube I found on another subreddit. The design is pretty bad and it does not have a lot of videos and video ratio isn't automatically set but you can download videos and there is no annoying ad block block
