Recommended alternatives for all the Google products, software and services
NOTE: We're trying to recommend you alternatives which are FOSS (or mostly so) and privacy-respecting. This is by no means an exhaustive list of alternatives, if you're looking for one, then check out our community-sourced wiki page (if you'd like to become an approved wiki contributor for that page - contact us).
(E-mail providers which don't offer at least 1 free of charge plan weren't listed)
(We don't recommend any Chromium-based browsers and browsers that use the Blink browser engine)
Dumbphones (feature phones). There are a lot of them, some of the most notorious ones are:
Regular Smartphones on which you can install a privacy-respecting OS:
The Mod Team has not vetted any of the above services, these are only recommendations based on user feedback. It is recommended you properly and thoroughly research any product or service you are interested in using.

It's been five years—five—since "Sync contacts with phone address book" was announced as a planned feature for ProtonMail.
In that time, Proton has launched product after product, and they rarely seem to fully complete one before moving on to the next.
While it's understandable that Proton wants to expand its offerings quickly to stay competitive, this approach sacrifices quality.
Taking over five years to develop a basic app for syncing Android contacts is incomprehensible—it's not a technically difficult task.
On top of that, Proton's products are riddled with small, irritating bugs that should take weeks or months to fix but persist for years.
This pattern reflects leadership that is either incompetent or indifferent. At this point, it's hard to look at Proton as a serious company.
So there was that car attack that happened in Germany today. In one of the comments I was reading as part of the story, someone mentioned that this car attack happened 8 years ago to the day.
So, out of curiosity I google 'car attack that happened in germany in 2016'; Not a single result for that attack, every single one on page 1 was for the one that happened today.
No worries, I'll refine the keyword:
'car attack that happened in germany in 2016 not in 2024' - Every result was todays attack.
'car attack germany 2016' - Every result was todays attack.
'car attack germany 8 years ago' - Every result was todays attack.
It wasn't until around the 5th query (after almost giving up, mind you) that I FINALLY came across what I was looking for.
How is Google so f'ing bad at this?!?!? It's like their company mission was changed to 'let's organize the worlds information, but make it practically impossible to find what you are looking for'!
Oh yeah, and Bing gave me the answer to my search in the very first result (while also include blurbs about todays attack).
I Need Google Photos Replacement Guys
I Heard About Ente.io
But It Do Not Show Right Date When You Export From It
So I Wanna Hear What You Guys Suggest
I Would Like To Import Easily And Good User Interface
Thanks In Advance.
I sadly need a chrome browser for some work sites whats the best we got?
So, I have unistalled google webview a while ago, and I am still searching for an alternative. As I can see, both bromite and ungoogled chromium haven't been updated for a while, but I don't know any other webviews. Suggestions?
Recently I installed ungoogled-chromium via winget and it shows at a whopping 1.73 GB in Programs and Features (I think that's more than twice official Google Chrome).
Anyone knows why it's soo large?, just curious.
I switched to GranpheneOS about a month ago. It has been a struggle. Pixel 6.
First the migration. Previously I would just migrate over everything, (a Google made that proxess very easy...minimal loss and setup). It took days to get all the apps I needed over to GOS. Some apps were much harder to migrate than others. WhatsApp was a pain, (it is a nessasary evil for me), only having access from one phone and retaining message history was not successful. Contacts also truncated and duplicated contacts, (sim card contact info was not as complete and exporting and importing was not novice friendly.
After migration most finance apps, (banking), did not work. Didn't even load, (not a show stopper as I can do that from a computer). Tap pay does not work as I was previously aware of. Device charging doesn't have limited charging to stop before 100%, (past device battery degradation). When driving, calls do not come through to the BT, it works when I call out. Phone numbers incoming are not looked up. Makes screening my calls much harder. Texting keyboard is inconsistent, (emoji availability, new lines, pasting options seem to come and go).
I am at the point now that I believe I've given GrapheneOS a more than fair shot and might have to go to another alternative (LineageOS) or worst case factory OS.
Any suggestions or other expenences you've worked through or encountered?
GTFS is a de-facto industry standard for public transport data. It was originally called Google Transit Feed Specification (now called General Transit Feed Specification) and is the native format used in Google Maps.
Transmodel is the de-jure European standard. It is extremely hard to use with its XML-based format and describes much more than passenger-facing journey planning information, and is designed as the source format including the full operational data from the planning department.
Most open-source passenger-facing public transport software uses GTFS as the data format, although some have support for both GTFS and Transmodel.
Need:
1)To Create content in windows or android
2)sync between directly (not via some cloud) for privacy reasons
I know that fdroid is good but its does not have that many games and apps in it like instgarm(I need to use it to stay in touch with frirmds) or games etc. What is a solution?
I'm new to GrapheneOS and I spent the last 3 hours searching every possible reddit sub and google result and still can't understand the difference (in terms of privacy) between installing Google Play Services on a 2nd profile vs in a Private Space or Work Profile (which I can't find anywhere; is there Work Profile on GrapheneOS?)
I read so many comments saying "it's a matter of preference" or "it depends how private you want to be" kind of comments but I couldn't find a single explanation from a reliable source (not just someone who say "I think" or "My guess is...") as to what are the privacy implications?
If GrapheneOS does a good job in sandboxing Google Play Services, than why would it matter if you just install it on the main profile? Is it exposing you to any information leaked to Google that's different from Private Spaces/Work Profile and 2nd profile?
I have a Motorola Stylus and on a US carrier and I get occasional updates for the Android system. After this last update, when I went to text someone I now get this screen come up. Apparently the default text app is tied to Google? It never told me that it was. I thought it was strictly the carrier and the Android and, perhaps Motorolas in some way. I can't find another way around it. I have to text by loading up the phone app that has the option to text but I can't use my phone's native texting app unless I click permission from google.
It says I can turn off these features anytime but I don't want giving them a data dump by accepting.
Anyway around this?
What is your opinion about using Truecaller. Is it good enough to use, I just installed to manage spam and fraudster calls, and it works pretty good.
To be honest if this is giving any layer of protection, probably is worth to use.
Like it says in the subject, I really just want a search engine that gives actual search result, I do not want to ask the opinion of a glorified chatbot
This one caught me off guard. I have a Lenovo 8 inch tablet and the screen broke a bit... (Still works but more and more is obscured each day) So I got another one just like it to migrate to... Hahaha! I have done my best to minimize Google, so making a complete backup of everything and sending it to them just so I can get it back is NOT on the agenda! And the few transfer programs I have seen are vendor specific, and Lenovo is not one of the vendors. :)
Most of the stuff I can manually transfer, but that will be a pain. And my browser history I can not transfer unless I cloud my browser as well... I mean, why is this even a problem? We fixed it on PC decades ago! Any ideas?
When I started my Google account I switched to Proton Mail without knowing that Tuta Mail existed, should I try it or stick with Proton, I see that it is something popular in this subreddit
Replacement for Google Contacts?
Not the app itself, but the sync, since if you save them in Google they are automatically synced and so there is no risk of losing them. I know Proton Mail has a contacts integration but it cannot be synced with Android.
Alternative to Google Keep? It is one of the few services that I have not yet found a simple alternative that allows some kind of cloud synchronization (I only use it for text notes)
When you have to use a fixed 4-digit PIN (no more, no less than 4 digits) for a card or app, there are only so many combinations for you to choose from. It seems impossible to create a 4-digit PIN that doesn't show up as "exposed on the dark web". This can be very alarming when you first get a report informing you that your PINs have apparently been exposed.
My understanding is that these PIN leaks are not necessarily YOUR PINs/passcodes; it's just that you might be using the same combination as those of others leaked in the past. Is there any way around this?
Note: Google was so "useful" as a password manager, but we didn't degoogle for nothing, right?
Hello! I'm currently using a Galaxy A52s with LineageOS installed, but I'm looking for something new. The power button doesn't work well anymore and the pictures are subpar, in addition to lacking wireless charging and just being too big for my taste (6.5 inches, why did I ever think that was reasonable). I do very much like LineageOS, so I'm looking for a refurbished phone I can flash a new ROM on.
I am leaning to the Galaxy S23 or S24 depending on availability, but I'm wondering what the options are for newer Samsung devices and if those options will have (at least security) updates for the next 5+ years. Otherwise the Pixel 8 with GrapheneOS looks like a good option, but it seems quite ironic to buy a Google device when I'm trying to deGoogle as much as reasonably possible.
What are your experiences with custom ROMs on new Samsung devices? Is it worth it, or should I consider the Pixel 8 instead?
for those of you on degoogled android ROM/OS what messenger do you use for secure texting (other than signal)? the original messenger app is google integrated which enables RCS, but theres got to be other options right? (i will probably cross post this to r/privacy as well)
Hello, i'm new to degoogle and i'm a non expert in technologies(please explain the abreviations lol), rn in trying to degoogle as best i cam but some apps in my country requires google services and only have in playstore so unfortunely keep regular android.
I have already this apps:
Can you guys helps with any other tips? Remember, i have to keep regular android and degoogle as best i can, thanks in advance.
I am mostly de-googled at this point but having trouble finding a good replacement for google photos
As it is I already have Immich up and running and love it, i backup all my photos there and couldn't be happier with that side of it
However the immich android app is not really ready to take over as my primary local photo viewer/editor etc and I am still using the google photos app for this. However the constant harassment to turn on backup has me really wanting to finally drop it.
I've been searching around and finding lots of recommendations for the backup slice or all-in-one options like photoprism or nextcloud, etc but thats not what I'm looking for.
So what do you all suggest? Again I don't need (have no interest in) another backup solution, that part is solved, I just need something for local viewing/management/editing.
when i install fossify apps like clock, file manager, gallery, etc. how do i disable the defaults from samsung?? do i just have to dissable them with the settings??
