Women safety. Sending a girl home alone by cab at 11.30pm.

So my really close friends went out for dinner along with my wife. Im currently out of town and I couldn’t make it. I was under the assumption that one of them would drop my wife back home as it’s super late. None of them offered to drop her, so she ended up booking a cab. They asked her if she needed a drop only after her cab had reached the restaurant.

I’m extremely pissed and upset with them considering they’re my really close friends and they didn’t have the common sense to ensure she gets dropped home safe as she’s alone.

I’ve come across a lot of horror stories about women’s safety (yes, even in Chennai. It’s not as safe as people claim it is) . With restaurants open till 2am these days, there are a lot of miscreants roaming the roads at odd hours. I’ve even seen some of them drunk catcalling girls at places like kora food street.

My wife says she isn’t bothered about this and the cab ride was safe. But you never know what would happen at any time.

I personally always ensure that a girl (within my friends circle) gets dropped home that late at night by one of us if she comes alone.

Do I confront my friends about this or do I just let it slide? Am I over reacting?

Bike stolen - Marina Mall

Hi makkale, my friend's bike got stolen yesterday when he went to watch a movie in marina mall. He parked it outside and went in for a 4.30 PM show. When he came back his bike got stolen. He checked with traffic police nearby and apparently they haven't seized any vehicles. So they told him to reach out to kelambakkam police station to file a complaint. After reaching there they told him to search himself and asked him to come tomorrow. So today when he went and waited the whole day, they still haven't filed an FIR yet. Also when he was at the police station, there were also other people whose bike got stolen at the same time near siruseri and marina mall area on the same day and around same time. But fortunatelly his bike has been insured for theft also. So now only after filing the FIR he can proceed to claim his insurance. Now the question is, Is there any possibility of getting the bike back? And if not how much money will he receive from insurance company for the bike. His bike is 2017 Activa 3G. If anyone else have experienced similar incident please share your thoughts and what to expect?

Note: To all, Kindly park your bikes inside the parking area to avoid such unfortunate incidents.

Baloon Akka

Vanakkam Makkale

So, there's this Tamil girl, Aurora Sinclair, who's seemingly blown up overnight. Turns out, she's from Chennai, Tamil Nadu. At first glance, it feels like her meteoric rise has been fueled by glamour alone—no real skill or unique content to back it up.

Her content seems to lean heavily on the 18+ side, and honestly, I find it quite gross and lacking substance. It's wild to see how someone can skyrocket so fast in today's digital world just by catering to certain "trends."

What do you guys think? Do you feel like talent and creativity are being overshadowed by sheer glamour these days? Is this the direction we’re heading, where shock value gets rewarded more than actual content?

Looking forward to hearing what you think!

Seeking Cancer Hospitals Covered Under Kalaignar Kapitu Thittam for My Grandmother

Hi Nambars,

Looking for recommendations for government or affordable private hospitals in Chennai that are covered under the Kalaignar Kapitu Thittam. We need this for my grandmother's treatment, and I’d really appreciate suggestions from those who have personal experience or know reliable places.

If you’ve been through the process or know of hospitals with good care under this scheme, please let me know. Any tips or advice on the application/approval process would also be really helpful.

Thank you in advance!🙏

My Friend, Who is an Employee, Finds His First Month of Work Quite Easy, But Will It Sustain?

India, a nation of hard-working individuals, has seen its corporate landscape evolve significantly, especially in the wake of economic liberalization in the 1990s.

Cities like Bangalore and Chennai have been at the forefront of this transformation, albeit in very different ways.

Recently, I spent time with my only friend from Bangalore who relocated to Chennai for work. This struck me as ironic, given the conventional perception that Bangalore is the tech hub where people flock for high-paying jobs and progressive work environments. However, his reasons made me rethink the evolving dynamics of Chennai as a strategic city for career growth.

While Bangalore is synonymous with India's IT boom and is often dubbed the "Silicon Valley of India," Chennai is carving its niche as a hub for manufacturing, corporate meetings, and business relationship management.

In recent years, corporate leaders and business professionals have chosen Chennai to host meetings and establish strategic connections.

My friend, however, did not arrive in Chennai for its professional glamor. His company, a reputed firm with a strong Chennai base, deployed him here to lead a project.

My friend’s experience in his first month has been surprisingly easy. He’s adjusted well to the pace of work and finds the environment less hectic than his previous stint in Bangalore. Moreover, he observed that Chennai offers a more balanced cost of living, which has made his relocation easier. The relatively affordable housing and minimal commuting stress add to his positive experience.

As I reflect on my conversation with him, I realize that while cities like Bangalore remain the hotspots of innovation, Chennai is quietly becoming the backbone of India’s corporate strategy.

So, will the initial ease of my friend’s job in Chennai sustain?

To those considering Chennai for work, it’s worth exploring the city’s professional ecosystem. You might just find the balance between career growth and lifestyle that you’ve been looking for.

Where to buy imported alcohol in chennai?

I am new to chennai.

I know the concept on pvt shops selling alcohol doesn't exist here. Only TASMAC.

But being a woman... it's not easy to get alcohol from a local TASMAC.

I am looking to buy something like JD honey...preferably 375ml bottle. (I have never seen one tbh... only seen 700ml... but apparently this exists.)

What do I do? Where do I get it? Any home delivery option exists?

Also, how to y'all dispose bottles? I live in an apartment... so again... not putting it into our common garbage can. Im sure some mama or mami will make a fuss.

Help guys!

I miss working in an office

Currently I'm working from home, majorly with north Indian team members who work from office (fully professional interactions). My company also has a Chennai team.

Today as I was having a Zoom call with a team member, I heard him tell someone "yen da parakkura.. na call la iruka therilaya", hearing tamil and the casual tone hit me how much I miss being around people. I just smiled to myself thinking about my wfo days and how disconnected wfh feels.

Sure, it's fantastic to work at home. It's a ten. But.. actually physically being around coworkers and the social aspects that carry us through the day would be nice.

I miss feeling part of a team, working or solving stuff together, the environment, having nice convos or banters in the tiny pantry, tea breaks la running to grab the snacks, events, outings, joking around, ranting about that one annoying director, excitedly punching out and walking down on a scenic street to the bus stop after work, the printer, or even just planning stuff after working hours.

I've been working from home for the best part of 5 years now, since covid. Changed a lot and I think a lot of it has to do with being isolated at home with no interaction whatsoever. In my previous company where I did wfh, they'all had sooo many cool activities and outings every week (from ritzy parties to football watch parties and whatnot). I don't think there's anything we can do to make work from home work da T_T

Wfh peeps do you miss working in an office? I know many don't, hell I'm so so satisfied that I wfh, the perks are amaazing. But there's a tiny pull towards the office days yk.

Help small business owners

I am a (22F) currently searching for a job in the design field. Recently, I got the idea of starting a business in a few years—maybe 2 to 3 years from now. I’m considering a printing business, primarily focused on invitation design and printing, based in Chennai.

For those with experience, how did you start your small business? What tips can you share? What should I consider before taking the leap? As a complete beginner, I’m unsure where to start and would greatly appreciate any advice or guidance.

Thank you!

Why are some people like this?

Hello makkale, I was born and raised in Chennai, so I have been living in Chennai for a really long time. During school days I would see these poruki-type guys following girls/women, passing comments, and making them feel uncomfortable. Even now, after I have grown up, I don't see any change in this; instead, the situation is even worse. I have read a lot of terrible incidents in this very Reddit group.

I am pretty much active on dating apps, and I do go out on dates quite often, and I have this habit of dropping a lady home if it is after 7 or 8 pm in the night, as I do not trust the Ola, Uber, or Rapido people when it comes to safety. I also wait there till they have entered their house before leaving.

A few of my dates tell me that they have been touched at the bus stop or other public places; some guy took advantage of the crowd and did it. There were 3 other men I noticed when I was dropping someone off. I was ready to call the cops as I saw a jeep right behind me, just so if they tried to pull something, because they gave me those creepy vibes, and she did tell me that they tried to come closer.

The day before yesterday, I was at a lake near the Tambaram highway; my date suggested that we go there, and it was my first time. There were other couples too, so I was cool with the place.

We sat there and spoke for a long time when a guy in a white shirt pulled over on his bullet. He said the police are active here, and they're on rounds. We were just about to leave, as everyone had already left, and as we wore our helmets, I said thank you and that we were leaving anyways. Then I took the bridge instead of the service road for her safety.

We travelled for some 500 meters, and we heard a bullet horn; it was the same guy, and he kind of made some uncomfortable signals using his mouth and face. I could not go and fight with the guy as the streets were empty, and I was worried more about the safety of the woman I was with, so I drove a little fast and stopped by a police jeep just to make sure he wasn't following, and if he did, I would complain on the spot. Thankfully he didn't, and we decided not to visit that lake ever.

Being a guy, I felt so uneasy and uncomfortable, and it creeped me out; I can only imagine how a woman must have felt in such situations. I do not know why people have to pull something like this. Don't they have mothers or sisters at home?

I can't stand such people since my childhood, and I wouldn't think twice before hitting them with all I have, but since I do not want to handle such situations with rage, I'm here for advice that can help me deal with this even better.

I'm sure a lot of you would have faced this, and you'd be happy to help. Thanks for listening to me, and thanks for helping me.

I know there are a lot more good men in Chennai than bad ones; I would request you all to take a stand if something like this happens in your presence.

Bespoke men of Chennai, harken to my request! (I'm in search of Tailor unkils)

I'm a 30-year-old male who has trouble finding well-fitting shirts or pants in the readymade sections of showrooms. So, I have resorted to trying out tailors here. I used to get my shirts and pants altered in Bangalore, and the tailors there knew what I was expecting. I want to find reliable and knowledgeable tailors who can stitch what I expect and provide inputs to improve my looks. I'm kind of old school; I'm over my skinny fit days and have been heavily wearing pleated pants on my waist, bootcuts, bell bottoms, and well-fitted shirts. If the tailors work out well, I hope to get a bespoke suit done for corporate events. Please give me your suggestions and what to expect here, what are the prices like, etc. I would prefer if the tailors were in and around St. Thomas or anywhere nearby. Also, share your experiences if you have any.

Looking for guidance on shipping a laptop from Chennai to Uttar Pradesh

Hey guys! I want to arrange a doorstep pickup for a laptop from Chennai to Uttar Pradesh. What would you recommend for shipping?

I was considering BlueDart but it's asking for tax forms and says that the minimum chargeable weight for non-documents is 10 kg (but it's a laptop haha).

I'm based outside of India and don't have access to my Indian phone number or tax forms. What's the best way to schedule this delivery?

Would appreciate any guidance you may have. Thank you!
