The Epic Experiment Podcast- ep 135: Losing with Grace

https://mcdn.podbean.com/mf/web/p6xf9u/ep_135agzvh.mp3

Tonight the guys dive into an element that is often overlooked when asking what makes a successful playgroup. Since most players come out on the losing side of any match, the ability to handle losing is critical, but often misunderstood. Bruce and Pete tackle this head on in the hopes of helping players handle losing with a little more grace.

PSA: selling your cards on TCG is not too hard and a nice way to supplement hobby spending

Hey all, this is one of my favorite MTG subs and just wanted to do a little PSA because some of the bigger subs like to poopoo on indulivduals selling on TCG player.

I just wanted to say that IMO, making a seller account and selling stuff you are not using on TCG player is not too hard, even if you are pretty casual about this game, and doing so can really supplement your spending on this hobby. You'll also get way more value out of your cards than selling to a store.

If you have specific questions, feel free to ask in the thread or DM me. I'm defintally not a TCG guru by any stretch but ever since I learned how to use it I feel like I have way more control over how to liquidate my cards and get the most out of them when needed.

If you're willing to put in a nominal amount work go get set up, you won't have to rely on stores paying you way less than what your valuable cards are worth. It can also be kind of fun mailing cards out assuming you don't let it spiral into a part time job.

Good luck!

Does anyone know the name of this casual format?

Sometime around 2011, a guy at game store in Rockville Maryland showed me a casual format I had never heard of before.

He had a big box full of non-land cards, all sleeved in the same color. He also had several stacks of each of the 5 basic land types all sleeved in different colors, removed from the main box. The big stack of non-land cards was shuffled and placed on the table --that was to be the collective library. On each player's turn they could either draw a card off the top of the collective library, or instead draw a [known] basic land card. Players would then proceed to play a big multiplayer game against one another, not knowing what they would be drawing throughout the game, but never being mana screwed as they could on any turn opt to draw a known basic land instead (ensuring their mana base when needed, and at the same time never getting mana screwed or mana flooded). The other interesting aspect of this format was that the graveyard was shared so no matter whose creature died, it went to the collective graveyard to [potentially] be resurrected by any other player. One final rule was that for any tutor effect card (ex. Tinker, Trinket Mage, etc.) you had exactly one minute to go find a legal target (the guy had a little one-minute sand timer included in the box). It was a really fun format and I've since made my own. I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking to play some very fun and at time chaotic magic without ever being bogged down by ban lists, rotating cards, etc.

The guy who showed me this format called it "Fat Stack" but it seems the common rules (or at least the multiple sources I was able to find through internet search) differ in that what is called Fat Stack today has players drawing from one of two decks --one being all non-mana producing cards while the other secondary stack is all mana-producing cards (this could be anything from a Basic Forest, to a Dimir Runestone).

The format termed "Battlebox" or "Danger Room" is also different in that the Battlebox cardpool is very low (120-150 cards) and each player has a limited selection of "dual lands" floating in the Command Zone which they can muster at their leisure throughout the game (I am simplifying this).

I know these are all slight variations on the concept, but does anyone know what the format I described is officially called? I would like to find more people who play Magic this way and discuss cardpool lists, etc. Currently, my list is somewhere between 900-1000 cards and it is still incomplete. Each time we play, we usually only grab a chunk to use as the library and leave the rest in the box (in the "exile zone"-which does occasionally come up for cards like Mastermind's Acquisition, Cunning Wish, etc.)

Bloated toad infinite

Bloated Toad, easily my favorite card. If you are not familiar with the classic urza's saga 2/2 I urge you to get yourself a copy of Una Frickers's masterpiece as quick as humanly possible. The card has cycling 2 and protection from blue. For about 2 years Iv'e wanted to make a deck around it going infinite but kept putting it off until now. Finding ways to copy it infinite times has been surprisingly difficult, so I thought I would ask here If anyone knew how to populate my toad army. I feel like there has to be a way to do it I just personally don't know enough cards to come up with something.
