Rules / Guidelines

  • Please be polite; remember reddiquette
  • A high-quality post will provide the name of the building, what organization it belongs to (or what purpose it serves), where it is, and when it opened. Ideally, please also list the architect(s). Titles should be simple, descriptive, and free of extraneous commentary.
  • If you took the photo yourself, put "[OC]" in the title (original content) and you will be given special flair.
  • Not all buildings exhibiting an exposed concrete exterior can be considered Brutalist, and may belong to one of a range of architectural styles including Constructivism, International Style, Expressionism, Postmodernism, and Deconstructivism.
  • 'Brutalism' does not mean 'brutal'. 'Brut' means 'raw' (from the French), referring to raw concrete.
  • Any rude, off-topic, or low-quality posts / comments / bots will be removed at the mods' discretion
  • No memes, reposts under 6 months, or URL shorteners (bitly, owly, etc.)
  • Please report anything that violates any of the above

Space House, London

I love this place, you can really see the inspiration for non brutalist modern architecture from it, places like the Gherkin.

I have some more photos here - www.londonisbrutal.com/space-house

Shout out to the most famous Brutalist structure to a certain age group… SFU’s Burnaby Mountain campus.

The default setting for sci-fi and X-Files type shows for Vancouver’s 90’s ‘Hollywood North’ era.

Why do you love brutalism?

Hi all! So a few weeks ago I discovered this sub.

After seeing a lot of photos of brutalism, both as architecture and interior design, I just fell in love with it.

Friends have asked me why I love it and I just don’t have words to describe it. I guess it would be that I love the potential? Like the building or room could look like anything, but there’s also the guidelines of functionality and concrete. Does that make sense?

I’m curious if others feel the same way? So that’s my question, why do you love brutalism?

Why do brutalism architecture looks a certain way?

A Brutalist architecture building

As seen in the photo, the windows are quite small, there are more walls then windows which is very weird. For some reason this choice really make me love that style of architecture. When i walk around some parts of my city- i see some communist-era flats without almost no windows on some walls and parts, like something that isn't suppose to be there, more like monument or fortress then anything meant for living, quite weird isn't it?

Read an interview with spatial designer Ceren Arslan and wanted to share this here cause I thought it was quite cool. What do you guys think about such concepts?

Severance on Apple+, anyone agree?

The vibe and many shots of the building and campus, all told. Can’t wait for second season.

My last post got taken down?

Just wanted to say I love this subreddit/community/ group of strangers. Every time I post it's only positive feedback. Loads of other subreddits are vile but this is a lovely place to be.

My Brutalist project of London is here - www.londonisbrutal.com

And if you wanna follow us on insta - @londonisbrutal_

Love seeing all your photos and hope to visit the countries that are featured and photograph the amazing buildings.
