“This is a hunting dog honey!” …. Her response “well she now has a Taylor Swift outfit!” 🫤
My Boykin loves to hunt quail and pheasant in some rugged country (mainly in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas). The sand burs and goatheads make boots a necessity, but I haven’t been able to find a well-fitting boot that doesn’t slow her down. I use the Lewis Boots but they don’t fit her smaller rear paws well.
Any recommendations out there from fellow upland hunting Boykin owners?
Any Boykin puppy litters due in the next couple months in Texas?
Thanks, Ben
My lazy TV buddy ❤️
So we narrowly avoided foreign object removal surgery last week. Our little guy is sneaky as hell and has eaten and passed a few socks this year. We try really hard to keep an eye on him too. But this last one somehow made it to his colon but the vet had to sort of massage and pull it out. They were shocked it got that far.
My question is does this behavior ever stop? My guy is 9 months old. He is relentless at eating socks, wipes, paper towels, etc. we have a 1 and a 3 year old so there’s often wipes out.
We could certainly be more diligent and will, but it feels like it’s not if, but when he will get something stuck and won’t pass it. Is this just a puppy thing? Will it get better after he’s neutered? Any thoughts or advice welcome!
Let me preface this by saying I’m fully aware I don’t know what I’m doing and I’m trying to learn and do better so please read this and reply with some kind of helpfulness and not judgement.
We have a 6yo Boykin named Louie. I wasn’t around him for the first 3 years of his life but when I moved in he was a lot to get used to and understand.
My wife and I are currently building a house and next year we’re planning to be pregnant so Louie’s training is high on my priority list.
A couple of key things you have to understand about Louie:
I keep him as active as I can but from what I’ve read I don’t think there’s enough activity in the world for this boy and I don’t know what to do for him and still keep him safe. He disobeys commands to a point that I’m convinced he’s giving me the dog middle finger. He has recently started back talking (I’m not kidding. If I tell him no he tells at me). And most recently he goes on hunger strikes. I haven’t quite figured out what sends him into those but I know he’s being rebellious about something.
So sos. What do I do? What am I doing wrong? What will calm him down? Is he too far gone? Can he still be trained? Please help me be a better Boykin mom.
Hi all! I'm looking for recommendations for a breeder that is either in Canada or can make arrangements with a Canadian buyer. I am looking at Boykins as my next companion/hunting partner.
I’m asking more as when they should be ‘retired’ from field work like hunting. My boy is a machine and I keep him very active between hunts, swims, runs, catch, walks, and all sorts of play time with my daughter. I’m just curious if there is a time or age when their drive slows down? I’ve notice he can go non stop and I have to make sure not yo work him too hard. Just want to be mindful of his health as he gets older. He is 4 yrs old right now.
Do we start small and upgrade later or go ahead and get a size that they can use their whole life?
We adopted this pupper a couple years ago— her DNA test revealed she’s 75% Boykin /12.5% Australian Kelpie and 12.5% other breeds.
She’s the greatest dog and my first Boykin.
Sorry another post. Forgot to lump this in with the other post.
I’ve seen a lot of ppl say they wait 2 years to get their females fixed. Can I ask what the reasoning is?
My GSP passed last year and we’re looking at getting a Boykin. We had our GSP when he was 2yo until he passed at 12yo. His energy levels were like a puppy until he was 8yo or so. We were very active with him, 3 long walks a day, hikes and hunts a few times a year.
I know Boykins have high energy, but how do they compare to a GSP? Same? More? Less?
We do not want a puppy so would like to get one that is older than a year.
P.S. Its been so fun to find this group and see all the Boykins!
Hello! Me and my boyfriend are getting a boy Boykin puppy. Here’s the kicker, we put our deposit down super early so we can have first pick of the litter. Sooo the puppies will not be born until January and we will pick him up in April.
With Christmas coming up, we are expecting family members to gift us a lot of puppy things which is awesome but we are still torn on a name and I would love to have personalized gifts with his name on it.
We are down to 2 top contenders and I just need some unbiased opinions.
Howie- this name has a lot of meaning to us because we met in Tampa Fl and my boyfriend works on the Howard Franklin bridge. So without this job we never would have met! (We would call him Howard when he’s in trouble haha)
Camper- this one is just fun to say and silly. We like how unique this one is and we both love the outdoors and go camping pretty often. This one came from one of our favorite music artist (Caamp). We would also probably just call him camp most of the time.
Please let me know which is your favorite!
Hey guys. My 3yo Boykin (Sally) has been excessively ornery and sleeping a lot. After a week, it finally clicked that she doesn’t seem to be hearing us. Shes always selectively listened so we didn’t immediately notice.
Took her to the vet on Monday and Sally wouldn’t let the vet touch her ears. The vet gave her a steroid and placed her on a 2 week regimen of antibiotics for an ear infection (her first one; she spends a lot of time in the water).
We are now noticing all the signs: pawing/scratching at her ears, head tilt, sleeping when it’s noisy, etc. A few weeks ago, you could say her name from across the house and she’d come running.
I’m quite concerned she’s lost her hearing. If you tell her name, she’s doesn’t flinch. Could she have gone deaf or is temporary deafness a thing? It’s hard to get your head around.
Has anyone had a similar experience? Did things get better?
Any suggestions for what to ask the vet?
Thanks! Really hope she’s okay.
He’s 11 weeks old and absolutely an adorable chaos overlord.
Just put in an application to Boykin Spaniel Rescue in Spartanburg to adopt a Boykin. They seem like a very earnest organization. Anyone have experience with them?
My boykin loves to pheasant hunt. We just moved states and the cover in Ohio is tearing his nose and the skin around his eyes raw. He has never had a problem with his eyes and has had the occasional cut to the nose from briars. However, this year his eyes seem to really bother him. I heard that the cover will get easier for him as the year progresses but won’t take him back out until his skin has recovered. Is there anything I can do to remedy this?
Has anyone had any success with doggles/Rex specs with their boykin?
Just wanted to say, this breed saved my life. No, my boy is not a service dog, however; as a veteran with depression and PTSD I took a chance and got a Boykin. I’ve had dogs in past, but wanted a dog that could match my energy and outdoor enthusiasm. I’ve had him for almost 4 yrs and we walk every single day, multiple times. Play catch, hunt, run, and basically do everything together. He’s always at my side. When I get in funks he reminds me to get outside and play, even when I’m down he’s here to remind me to get up and out. This is a beautiful breed, so thankful I found him. Just wanted to express my love to those who probably understand this breeds ability to touch souls and change lives.
Hey all, I have a 1.5 year old Boykin who is sweet as can be, but HATES her nails clipped. It is to the point we cant do it. She squirms and shakes and hides and makes it impossible. We have tried clippers, grinders, anxiety meds, treats, slowly introducing the tools, etc. Nothing seems to help. What have yall done that has helped?
