Unique Things at Boston

Hey guys, what are some unique things that are at BU, like programs, clubs, or extracurriculars that other places don't offer? I want to start researching things but I have no clue where to start.

p.s I've always wanted to try equestrian, I know there's a team but I've never ridden a horse so that's a no-go, is there anywhere I can try it out?

What time do clubs generally start?

At my old school, all of the clubs started no earlier than 6 pm. I'm worried that BU is the same or similar.

Are you allowed to transfer in courses outside your college

Hi, I wanna transfer to bu and I've been checking the course equivalencies from my current college. I'm applying to cas but I'm wondering if I take courses that transfer into a com or qst equivalent if that's ok. Thanks

Is the mailing system completely safe?

This may sound like a dumb question, but I was wondering if shipping items is totally safe and won't get lost/confused on the way because of the way the addresses worked. (Box # -> I live in west btw).

Anyone taking FT526 before?

I'm signing up for this class now but miss the first class. Can anyone who taken this class before tell what it will be about? Do you like it? How's the workload?

Thanks for any information.

Dismissed from MET but re instated again

Hey folks, I got accepted at BUMET CS program but due to the first semester low grades I was put on probation and eventually received a dismissal notice. But I made an appeal and it got accepted so I am back to BU now.

But now for some reason they are saying from now on all the remaining courses that you will take, you should get a B+ or higher grade in order to remain part of the program.

Did this happen to anyone of you here, and also does it seem far to raise the bar for a student that is already struggling to get good grades ?

Calling All BU Students! Volunteer at Loop Academy and Make an Impact on the Next Generation of Young Leaders!

Full disclosure, I'm not a BU student, just thought some of the members here might be interested in this.

Hey everyone!

I volunteer at an impact-driven tech academy called Loop since 2017, we teach students across Boston and NYC about coding, tech, AI, and cyber-security. I wanted to post here to see if anybody from the community wants to join our team of mentors.

Are you passionate about tech, coding, and mentorship? Want to give back and inspire young minds? Loop can be your outlet to benefit the community.

What is Loop?
Loop is a Tech Academy and community that provides children with the skills and experiences they need to become the next generation of leaders and innovators. We offer hands-on workshops in coding, AI, and cybersecurity, and we're all about making tech education fun and accessible.

Why volunteer with us?
As a volunteer, you'll get the opportunity to:

  • Mentor students in real-life coding and tech projects
  • Develop leadership and communication skills
  • Be part of a growing tech community with amazing networking opportunities
  • Help inspire the next wave of tech-savvy kids

Here's a video from our Spring 2024 workshops.

Who are we looking for?
We’re looking for students who are enthusiastic about tech, education, and mentoring. Whether you're majoring in computer science, engineering, or just love tech, your skills and passion can make a difference!

How to get involved:
We're running workshops in Boston, and we’d love to have passionate students help us out! You’ll be assisting instructors, helping students with projects, and providing mentorship.

If you're interested in joining this impactful and exciting experience, comment below or DM me for more info. Let’s work together to shape the future of tech!

TL;DR: We’re looking for passionate student volunteers in NYC and Boston to help mentor kids in tech workshops (coding, AI, etc.) with Loop Academy. Comment or DM for more info!

Choosing between Intro to InfoSec (CAS CS 357) and Intro to Database Mgmt (CAS CS 460)

Currently I'm leaning towards InfoSec out of pure interest of the field and it's long-term usefulness, though I think taking database management would be useful since I'm interested in backend dev as well. But I heard on Reddit that some people didn't enjoy CS357 too much, so what's your opinion on the courses CS357 vs CS460 if you've taken either?

STOP FETISHIZING COMPUTER SCIENCE MAJORS!!!!

The women on this campus are out of control. The first time I wore my “There are only 10 types of people in this world, those that understand binary and those who don’t” CS shirt to lunch, no less than 3 different women tried to sit down and chat me up. Like I would know how to talk to a girl! Naturally, I demonstrated superior knowledge of each of their niche interests, which apparently disqualifies me from the dating pool (seriously, why shame someone for being smart?).

Anyway, that got them to leave, but the problem has persisted over the past couple of days since orientation. I’m honestly so fed up with everyone wanting to get with me. I’ve taken to moving all the other chairs at tables I sit at in Courtyard or GSU to other tables, just to avoid people trying to sit with me. But yesterday, some small woman literally pulled up a chair and started going on about the latest QST MS 101 “project.” Like, girl, I don’t struggle with projects that are just glorified homework. I’m a Computer Science major, not some Arts major. After making it crystal clear that I did NOT, in fact, want to copulate in the middle of Commonwealth Avenue, she finally left me alone. But I wish these girls would stop throwing themselves at me just because I’m enrolled in the hardest degree on campus (which, by the way, was not difficult for me to get into).

The worst is when students from non-technical majors start talking to me. We’ll be having a decent, totally platonic conversation, and then comes the inevitable question: “What’s your major?” The moment I say those magic words, I see their whole demeanor change. The doe eyes, the blushing, the obvious attempts to impress me. What makes a Business or Communications major think they have a chance? Comp Sci and these basic degrees are on entirely different planes of existence. I’m not about to have some intellectual affair with someone whose “work” consists of giving PowerPoint presentations.

You might think it’s because I’m remarkably handsome (which, to be fair, I am), but my attractive mates in Civil Engineering or Architecture don’t have these problems. It’s like the girls at BU see me as an object and a genius, when in reality, I’m so much more: I’m top 100 in Phantom Forces (for those uninitiated, that’s Roblox). My Computer Science shirt shouldn’t reduce me to a bag of meat. If you want my heart, you have to grind with me, smurf noobs, know all the best strategies, and most of all, be able to watch Star Wars with me and actually understand it—no fake fans. I’m not interested in people who can’t even appreciate the gravity of the “I am your father” scene in The Empire Strikes Back (not that I cried, or anything).

If you’re after something shallow, just head over to the Business School or Education Faculty. Stop fetishising my kind for something I can’t control. I didn’t ask to be born a genius. Honestly, sometimes I wish I was an Arts major, blissfully ignorant, not burdened with the responsibility of saving the world by creating the next Facebook or whatever billion-dollar startup I’m destined to lead. But that’s my fate, and I don’t have time for these incessant advances. Gently touching the beach or posing by the CDS isn’t going to work on me. Come back in a Mandalorian costume, solve the three-body problem, build your own OS, make an AI model, or land a gig at Google or Goldman Sachs—then maybe we’ll talk.

Should I drop this class?

I’m a transfer & sophomore (on the premed track). My old school accepted my IB credits for Gen Bio 1 & 2, but several advisors at BU advised I retake atleast Bio 2 if not both.

I’m enrolled in Cell Bio 203, Orgo 1 and Physics 2 right now. I’m finding cell bio decently challenging. Maybe it’s because I haven’t taken bio in so long, or maybe it’s because people saying I’m heavy loading myself and i’m starting to feel that way or both.

Should I drop cell bio? If yes, what are some lighter classes I could take that are interesting.

I’ve tried swapping Cell Bio with Death & Immortality, Ancient Med, Sociology 100, Organization of Healthcare in US…. nothing works.

Please help!

Do I have a chance?

Hi everyone hope y'll r doing good . I am writing to inquire about my eligibility for STEM business programs at boston university. Although I did not take Mathematics in high school, I have completed AS and A Levels in Business, Economics, English and media studies . My gpa is between 2.8 to 3.00 . like my grades are C,C,C,B,B . I have 7 bands in ielts . I have also got myself involved into a lot of good extracurriculars

Given my background, I would like to understand if I can still apply for any of STEM business programs or if there are alternative pathways or preparatory courses available to meet the program requirements.

Do I have a chance at fordham boston school of business for bachelors ?

Pls give your honest feedback and advices . I really need it at this point of time

Dining Hall Hand Swipes

What happened to these? I live off campus so it was so convenient to just swipe my hand to get into the dining halls, I didn't have to worry about having my terrier card 24/7. Does anyone know if the hand swipe access will be brought back?
