Bat friendly lights

I know red lights help preserve human night vision. Would changing outdoor lights at my house to red LEDs also help bats (and other nocturnal animals)?

Potential bat problem

My wife and I bought a house around 3.5 years ago, last night was our 6th bat inside the house (northern Indiana and was about 30 degrees) and have heard numerous clawing inside the walls.

Within a few months of living there, we had a different bat inside the house two nights in a row, I know this because I had to catch the bats, different sizes and I safely release them. I called a bat expert after that since I absolutely am terrified of catching bats, takes me about an hour to go get it and in the middle of the night being half asleep.

The bat expert sealed up some potential entry points and put a tube on a few of them to make sure they could get out and not re-enter. Well, a few months later he had to come back out to do some more spots since another bat had reenter and then the following year.

Seemingly, thought the bat problem was over and had another bat come inside this summer and was the only one. Well, we got a new roof in October and the roofing contractors obviously removed the places he had sealed off, some of them not as bad as they had been prior to the bat expert.

Last night, our cat actually got the bat this time and it did not make it. I respect bats, I know they are scared when they fly into a home, which is why I felt terrible about this, but my wife wants me to call this bat removal expert back to see if he will reseal the spots since we had a new roof. I do not think it will work since we had a bats after him doing it and I believe we had paid a decent amount for him to come last time.

TL:DR - bats getting into home, paid someone 3 years ago to seal off spots, bats have been inside since, got a new roof, do not want to pay this guy again since warranty does not cover a new roof for him, wondering what you guys think.

Honduran White Bat Drawing

Well it's a balming 14 deg here. Lol! Good time to introduce my first complete drawing of 2025. I was going for a bit of a vintage botanical illustration. Honduran white bat, south american figs, and Quartz Crystals done in prismacolor and fabercastell colored pencils.

Hibernating bat suddenly appeared in my staircase... upstate NY

Looks like a small or large brown bat. He is too high to get to, and would certainly die if I were to catch him and place outside. He just showed up today, and hasn't moved since.

Since it is hibernation time, will he just stay asleep in my house for a while? Or will the warmth trigger him to begin waking at nights?

I'm assuming he was hibernating in my attic or nearby and was hoping once nighttime approached he would wake up and go back to that place... no such luck, it is midnight and he hasn't moved since I spotted him this morning.

I live in a very rural area, no wildlife rehabbers near, and health dept wants me to catch or kill him for their testing. Better ideas of what I should do if he doesn't wake up and leave on his own?

Advice needed

This little one was chilling on my front step early this morning, which seemed strange to begin with already. I had since left for approximately 7 hours in which it was exposed to the sun and returned to find it hadn't moved in the interim. I cut it some small apricot slices and put out water, both of which it was completely uninterested in. It then began raining fairly hard and still the little one wouldn't move other than the fast breathing one could associate with any rodent. At this point I carefully placed it in the above box where it is yet to make a move. It measures around 6cm and seems unhurt but exhausted. I'm completely unsure of the species or what to do and would highly appreciate any advice.

Bat or Bird

I live in central Ohio and my wife was getting the mail at 11:00 PM. Something flew into her forehead and she’s worried it was a bat. The temperature is 27° F with a windchill that makes it feel like 14°. It’s been this cold and windy all day. How likely is it that it was a bat? The animal was on the mailbox and she didn’t see it well enough to know what it was. The mailbox has a wood housing around it and there is space around the metal mailbox that would enable something to get in there. We also found a long cylindrical poop on top of the metal mailbox from where the animal flew. The poop looks more like bird than bat.

Anyone know of a sound ID library for North American bats?

I'm working on an acoustic ID project and I'm looking for a library of bat sound files with known ID to practice with, preferably .WAV files. Specifically species of Minnesota (which overlap with most of the northeastern US and Canada). I know of the NAbat training set but for some reason several of the species files won't allow me to download (says they cannot be found and cannot generate a download link). If anyone knows of an additional sound library, free training resource, or troubleshooting tips for the NAbat files, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

Need help with a bad ID from Manuel Anonio, Costa Rica.

Thanks in advance for some help with this one! I'm not so good with IDing bats, and saw these cute little guys at the National Park in Manuel Antonio - would love to know what kind they are!

What kind of bat is this?

Found this bat on the ground, still alive. We transported it outside on a magazine. Wingspan measured about 22-24ish cm. This was in the Netherlands, if that helps.

If a distressed bat is in my wall and my wall has a hole into my room, would the bat be attracted to or repelled by the light coming through the hole?

I’m nervous that the reason the bat sounds distressed with scratching, fluttering, and squeaking is because it’s either trapped in the wall or fighting for space with another bat. Would it be attracted to the light from the hole because the light signifies an exit and potential access to food/water, or do bats strongly dislike bright light enough that the bat would avoid it?

Bat identification in San Diego

A solitary bat was resting or sleeping around my roofline in Oceanside in the evening . In the morning, I noticed its droppings. I had a wildlife removal come check it out. He said it was the largest bat droppings he has seen. He almost didn’t think it was a bats initially until he saw how it crumbled when touched. He also said most bat droppings are the size of rice. These were larger. Any ideas what bat species would have large roundish bat droppings and be hanging out alone at night by a suburban home?
