Bar Review Baseline Thread

My score: 33/70 (from Barbri)

Civ Pro: 2

Con Law: 6

Contracts: 6

Criminal Law & Procedure: 6

Evidence: 5

Property: 5

Torts: 3

Thoughts: Obviously I suck at Civ Pro and Torts but I was shocked at my Property score because I struggled with Property more so than Torts.

What was your process in turning a weak subject into a strong subject?

I don't have access to online practice questions just yet but I do have S & T (2nd edition)

I do have access to some of Jon Grossman's stuff from 2016 but I am worried because its a little dated as is my copy of S&T.

Name of the objectively best bar prep combo

Alright, alright, I know it's subjective re learning styles/whatever - but pound for pound what is THE objectively best way to attack the UBE. Some considerations:

- Assume cost isn't an issue (firm pay)

- Let's stick to the big dogs (Barbri/Themis + Adaptibar + Critical Pass + Etc.)

- Standard prep duration and high pass % school

Pretty close to just stopping the worry and going with Barbri b/c it's the biggest name and Adaptibar to pick up the real-life style Q's Barbri apparently leaves out. BUT I am really curious to hear the case doing something else (and especially curious to hear if the anti Barbri sentiment is rational)

Thanks in advance!

NYLE - recorded like the bar exam?

Does the Examplify software videorecord you during the NYLE exam, as in the regular bar exam? I just completed the mock exam, and I noticed that the it lacked the "you are being video and audio-recorded" notices that we got during the bar exam.

Has anyone tried Vinco?

I work full-time and didn't pass the July bar. :( I used BarBri, but feel like I need some additional coaching, prep and focus. Just trying to figure out what may be the best approach this time around. Vinco? Themis? PMBR? BarBri again? I'm in an UBE jurisdiction. Thanks!

Bar study prep courses

Hi everyone,

Has anyone studied for the bar exam part time because they were working full time? And which bar prep course did you use? Would you recommend it?

Failed UBE - Second Time Testers Help

Does anyone have suggestions on how to study for the next go around? I failed by about 30 points for my state - 24 points for being able to practice anywhere. I did Themis and clearly it didn't work.

UBE transfer question

If I transfer my UBE score to another UBE state, will I still be licensed/able to practice in my original UBE state? I feel like I should already know this . . .

Extracurricular reading & The Scarlett Letter on my chest

I heard about this with lawyers after finishing law school and getting barred, I want to get back into reading books for leisure and I also want to learn a new language, however, I just don't feel like doing any of that.

Also, I have noticed that I have a huge Scarlett's letter on my chest. I have been getting turned down from jobs that I am over qualified for whenever I disclose the fact that I am waiting for my bar results. It sucks because the market is already competitive and there aren't that many attorney jobs available, but now I cannot even get an interview for a paralegal job because they are aware that I am waiting for my results.

Has anyone else experienced this?

PA-specific study materials

I'm taking the PA bar in February, 10 years after graduating law school and taking the NY Bar. I'm going to self-study using AdaptiBar for the MBE, but I need PA-specific books or outlines. I can't seem to find any options aside from paying for BarBri or another traditional course. I know I can get old essay questions online, but I'm looking for study materials on the PA subjects.

Does anyone know where I can get PA-specific materials, or have used BarBri/Themis/etc. books on PA subjects they want to part with?

Mental Health and Passing the Bar

I dont know if this will help, but I thought now that I have my results if I can somehow ease someones anxiety or give them a little hope I should.

I passed the bar in a UBE state. But i was far from an ideal studier. In fact I was going though one of the worst bouts of mental health crisis I've had in my life.

But I was intentionally kind to myself in terms of my mental health. I had to be or I knew studying would destroy me.

I did not study all day like it was a job. In fact most of my studying was listening to lectures as a mutlitasked.

There were so many days when I was so worried and drained I stayed in bed all day and watched movies.

A lot of days I was paralyzed on the couch unable to make myself do the studying I thought I needed to pass.

After the exam, I beat myself up after so much because I thought I could have and should have done more. But to do so would have been at the sake of my mental health.

So I guess if you were like me and were struggling with maintaining your mental health during bar prep, there is hope that you passed. Being kind to yourself and taking care of your mind or having an episode doesn't mean you can't pass this test.

Is anyone else just… done with this shit if they fail?

The state of the world lately has really put things into perspective for me and if I don’t pass the bar this go around I will also lose my job offer for a public interest job I am really excited about. I can’t really afford to take the test again right away, and even if I could, I don’t know if I want to. If the profession wants to keep me out so badly I’m not sure it’s worth it at this point to continue on, especially when the institution itself seems to be falling apart more and more every year. I could almost certainly find a job I’m qualified for with a comparable salary to a starting position in public interest and I’d probably have more free time. Mostly just venting as result dread sets in, but curious as to if anyone else feels similarly.

Kaplan at $1299 + book deposit OR Themis at $1495

Hello there,

I am a UK LLB graduate looking to take a 10 week NY Bar prep course. I'm funding the program out of my own pocket and weighing up between these two options. Should I go with Kaplan as the cheapest option or is the extra couple hundred bucks worth it for Themis?

Also, I'm not planning on signing up to any of the 'LLM Advantage' programs as they cost extra. Will this disadvantage me, or should I be okay coming from an English-speaking common law jurisdiction?

Wow. I’m a unicorn.

Seriously. during my Bar exam, my computer glitched at five minutes to the end and I lost an entire answer to an essay. I had five minutes of testing time left. I had two choices… 1. call over IT and risk having nothing on the screen because they couldn’t do anything or 2. throw terms and 50/50 guesses on conclusions for all sub parts and have SOMETHING on there to pray for a “1”.

Took option two… submitted with FOUR sentences on the essay. I FREAKIN PASSED.

It’s possible people. I know we hear about someone who knows someone… but praise God… it’s me. I’m someone.

Anyone Doing Something Nice for Themselves?

Is anyone doing anything nice for themselves when they pass the bar? I’ve been wanting to get an iPad so I’m going to treat myself when I get my passing results (hopefully 🙏🏼). Anyone else?

Illinois Bar Exam Testing Accommodations

Hi, I’m filling out my application to take the February UBE exam in Illinois and I’m trying to figure out if I’m able to request accommodations for my ADD. I’ve been formally diagnosed and take medication (for several years now) but never requested accommodations in the past, including law school. I’ve heard that you’re generally supposed to show that you’ve had prior accommodations for your request to be approved but the IL bar admissions website doesn’t back that up. Anyone have any idea if it’s a requirement to have a history of accommodations?

Foreign-educated, out of law school for 20 years

I obtained my LLB and PCLL in a common law country 20 years ago. I was admitted as a solicitor but I have not practiced law since I moved to the US 13 years ago. Do I need a LLM in an approved law shool to sit for the NY Bar Exam?

NY people (I am one of you): we must stop commenting on every bar results anxiety post that we have to wait longer than everyone else

Times are indeed bad, my Empire State loves. My heart goes out to each and every one of us. We do have to wait too long. We can and should make our own posts to lament this.

But when people post about being worried - let’s just also be worried with them. It won’t even be hard, because we are also worried. Commiseration is a cuter look then doing a weird “we have it harder than you!!!” dynamic with people from every other state.

Freaking out

Scores are being released in my state on September 24, I’ve been fine all this month. Now all of a sudden… I’m having an “oh shit what if I failed?!?!” On some level I’m ok with either way the cookie crumbles but got damn I don’t want to do this again…

Thanks for letting me vent
