I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I'm looking for any kind of opportunity to purchase a student ticket for the Lawyers ball in Vienna 2025. Sadly, the student tickets are sold out now and I can't afford a regular one. Could anyone please recommend a website or something of that sorts where it could be possible to find someone reselling their tickets to this ball? Or maybe by any chance you might know a person who has tickets but won't be able to attend? Any kind of help is appreciatedš
I (25f) recently started ballroom dancing and salsa. I notice that my general fitness could be better (I'm out of breath after a decent quickstep or waltz), and I think I would benefit from more corset and arm muscle for posture and frame, and more leg and butt muscles for the control of rise and fall. I got a gym membership for Christmas, which I intend to use, but I have no idea where to start. Does anyone know which exercises would be most beneficial for ballroom dancing?
Me, as a 17-year-old boy, had seen some Viennese waltzing before, on YouTube and on the first day of each year by Vienna philharmonic. When I looked at the dancing, it seems very beautiful and I really loved the music for the waltzes by Johann Strauss. I had tried a little bit of the dancing before. It was fine. Would it actually be fun and a great experience to learn ballroom? Also, are the ballroom steps rather simple?
I occasionally wear some shoes like my cubans and they're a perfect fit, but I sometimes need to wrap my toes with gauze with cold some shoes leather types tend to shrink. Has anyone come across a very very thin type of gauze they can put on their toes? I use these while great, I have to spend half an hour cutting up little strips to wrap around all my toes. In anyway, is there a better type or brand where I can just stick on my skin before I put on my thin socks?
My wife and I have always wanted to dance to ohne dich. We're taking dance lessons now and have an opportunity to dance to this song. We just don't know which dance style would be appropriate.
New to dance, never competed - yet friends from studio think I should. Would love to hear what others in Sr. think.
Hello everyone!
There is something thatās been on my mind for quite some time. Ever since a year ago when I decided to take a career break from a grocery store job I worked for 8 years, Iāve been thinking about a lot of different hobbies or social activities because I honestly donāt really do much of any scheduled activities other than sit at home in my room and watch YouTube or play video games most of the time, which can lead to depressing feelings if Iām not careful about my consumption.
Ever since September of 2024, my parents were chilling in the living room watching the premiere of Dancing With the Stars, and ever since then, Iāve gotten quite intensely hooked onto that show, watching it all the way until the final. Then I began to have increasing thoughts about maybe trying this dancing activity out. I (hopefully Iām not bragging) can bust out some decent moves when Iām at weddings on the dance floor when Iām having an ecstatic time. My older brother (30M) and cousin (23M) both got married and have been so for almost a year, and they both had their amazing first dances and I had a ton of fun on both of their dance floors. I thought that maybe I could use something to boost my confidence in interacting with women in a slightly different way, if you know what I mean, since I personally donāt really feel like I have much self confidence in that arena sometimes. I can dance pretty well in a solo fashion when just having fun, but partner dancing looks to be a bit of a challenge for me. My cousin actually took dance lessons when he went to college and thatās where he met his now wife.
I guess the reason Iām a little hesitant to get into this hobby is because my dad does not like to dance and he finds it just a little uncomfortable. Second reason of course is just because of how overwhelming it is to start out on something that you never really have done before. The reason why I emphasize on my dad a bit is because Iām just like him in so many ways (him and I are super close) and it personally just feels a little weird to be different than him in a way. On the other hand, my mom loves dancing, and she always got me to do the country two-step with her on the dance floor. Due to how often she and I danced, I think sheād be a great support, and I think my dad would be as well because I actually do remember him saying to me one time, āIf you knew how to dance, the ladies would love you.ā
Anyhow, do you think that I should give this activity some consideration? Iād love to hear your thoughts, opinions or feedback. Thanks so much!
Looking to learn any partner dance and have fun, but am struggling to find recommendations (on reddit or elsewhere) that aren't super dated. Does anyone have any recs? I'm in the East Village.
Also, if the goal is to have fun/learn to dance together is it worth paying for private lessons or will group lessons do?
Does anybody know of any songs from the 40s/50s (60s would probably work too) that would be suitable for a Viennese Waltz that is on the slower side? Iāve only been able to find options that are super fast, so I thought Iād ask before I ditch the idea I have. Thank you!
hi guys! i am trying to find a type of āspinā from a latin dance (probably cha cha, or maybe samba) and i think this is the only community i can turn to. my mom did a few latin dances when she was young and she told me about this spin in which she would kind of crouch down, using a leg as a pivot and putting the other leg up (where her and her partnersās arms were), while her partner basically spun her going around her. now i tried to search for this step but i have no success. does anyone know what im talking about? thank you :)
Hello everyone,
I started ballroom dancing in July. I began with mostly private lessons because they fit better into my daily schedule.
Recently, the owner of the studio has been asking me why I never go to the group lessons in the evening. I decided to try a few. The class is mostly women so there was no opportunity to dance with a partner. The instructor teaches one or two individual steps in different styles.
I always leave the group classes thinking Iām missing something and wondering if I should take more to see if I progress or if I should just stick with the private.
For all of you more experienced dancers, what do you think? Do you prefer groups or privates For a beginner?
Thanks so much!
So, as the title says, I need some advice on a problem I have.
I started dancing 4 months ago and donāt feel very confident in my abilities but I know Iāve shown good results. My dance club has signed me up for a competition this weekend and Iām going to be dancing almost every dance I know, the problem though lies in my ability to move my hips in Latin dances. I have been trying to fix it for a long time with the help of a friend of mine as well as my teachers, sometimes I do get it right, but most of the time I am moving my hips the opposite way. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions for me on how to fix this or is practice just going to do its thing after some time?
Thank you for your time!
(Sorry if Iāve made mistakes, English isnāt my first language)
This may be a dumb question and I don't even know if this is the right place to ask. I'm an adult dancer, former child dancer. Got back into it this year. We have a performance next week and we just got our costumes and we have a hair piece! This is the first time i've seen this kind of applique. It is not on mesh, so I can't get pins through it. I have no idea how to attach it to my head Imao. I'd appreciate any help!
Hi, I am I Orange County, Ca. Just found out that lessons are $125 each. You can get discounts if buying bulk. Is this a lot? Or a good deal?
I bought this dress from eBay for my first competition. I was reluctant to spend a lot, just in case I didn't enjoy the experience and didn't want to do it again! This dress was Ā£30 and I'd just like some opinions. It's quite short, which I don't mind, but I'm a little bit concerned about how it looks from the waist up.
Glasses or no glasses at competition? Personally, I want to wear my glasses because Iām shelling out enough for competition. I donāt also want to go pay for contacts. Will this be frowned upon?
I was going to a dance studio for a year but I wasn't able to afford continuing lessons. Does anyone know what places hold parties for ballroom/Latin dancing?
So I have a small problem sometimes during rumba classes where my soles of the feet become really painful right after the first 10-15 mins of doing choreo back to back. But after another 10-15 mins the pain usually disappears even though I'm dancing just about the same.
I'm not sure whether it's due to overstretch or lack of proper warm up since I usually finish with knee rotations and do no warm up for the feet.
Does this happen to anyone else? I mean, I usually don't mind other types of pain (back, hip, ankle) but this one is the hardest one to cope with even if it's just for 10 mins.
Hi there, apologies if this is not the correct sub for this question! My partner and I have just started dance lessons at a ballroom studio, both to learn how to dance and for our first dance. We were talking about elements we want to learn and I have a specific lift in mind, but I am really struggling to find its name or a video to show our teacher.
The move is the leading partner standing with their hands on the following partnerās waist, following partner hands on leading partnerās shoulders. Itās basically an assisted jump - leader lifts partner up so that their arms straighten while doing a partial turn, and then lowers her down. I think I first saw it on so you think you can dance?
I hope that makes sense! Thanks in advance!
I know I am another stick to add to the fire but for me I feel like itās better for me to share it in here and be able to processes my stuff before having the conversations I am going to need to have. But ever since the management changed at my studio itās kinda blows. Before anything I totally get the people there are not friends but we are friendly with each other. But I feel like things have not been as clear as they should be. Being told by my instructor who I have taken lessons with for a while telling me they canāt do it because their in management to then seeing them teach various couples/students.
Recently I have also observed my standing schedule being changed and then being told it was not . I get that it actors to a people with a lot of money but I at least I was hoping to have some decency as a paying customer.
I am glad for this sub that has shared their experiences with AM that have encouraged me to find something better . Luckily im in Dallas and theirs a lot of good places especially when it comes to west coast swing which I have found a deeper love for.
Hey there! I just started dancing two weeks ago at a Fred Astare studio. I've done some research and found that a lot of these places are kind of a scam. At mine, there's only 2 instructors and they both have been dancing competitively for a combined 30 years, and the beginner classes a $85 for a private 45 minute lesson. 1 social is included if you buy 4.
So far I feel like this is a very good FA franchise, if I'm comparing to some of the stories I've read. The problem lies with my instructor wanting to bring me up from beginner classes to intermediate ones. I've had three lessons and one social. She says that I'm learning very fast and is constantly complimenting me but I'm not sure if this is just a sales tactic.
So far I learned the basic steps for Rumba, Waltz, Tango, Fox Trot, and Push Pull. I've learned the promenade and corte in Tango, Underarm Turn in Waltz, Underarm Turn, and Cross Body Lead in Rumba, and Underarm Turn, Cuddle, and what she called the fancy move (arms behind head, step back and grab hands, do some turns, back to basic) in push pull. The very last thing I learned (I struggled a lot with and still can't really do) was learning the rise and fall movement with the Waltz.
Am I actually a fast learner and able to move up beyond "beginner" classes or is she just trying to give me a big head so I buy more classes and pay more for them?
Thank you in advance for reading and giving me insight.
My partner and I want to do our wedding first dance to Morning Time by The Brothers Comatose.
I'm looking into lessons, but the styles I'm considering are offered at different places. If you know this song, or take a quick listen, what style of dance do you think would go best? From my basic knowledge and research, I'm thinking a Two step or a foxtrot? Other thoughts?
Just looking for a quick consensus! Thank you so much!
Hi everyone! š§āāļø
Iām looking for advice on how to style my natural curly hair for an upcoming ballroom competition. I want to properly contain it so it stays neat throughout the performance, but Iād also love to show it off because itās such a big part of my personality.
Iāll attach a photo of my curls for reference. Any ideas or tips for styles that are competition-appropriate but still let my curls shine?
Liza Lakovitsky left her hair natural at the UK Open and it absolutely slayed and stood out! šShe does have much shorter hair though (https://www.instagram.com/reel/DFLWvLmsVlr/?igsh=MTlseTZnazJiamkw)
So I'm having trouble rotating my hips in all latin dances except rumba, especially cha-cha and jive.
Especially in the jive side chasse it's really difficult to straighten both legs after the swing and then rotate my hip. I always start the rotation while my legs are still bent because I feel I don't have enough time to pull my hip back and even then I still get on the ball of my feet with a small delay on the next beat.
My dance instructor says that it's important to fully rotate my hips, pull it back with enough force and do enough body compression but it always feels like it's not enough time for any of these even on slow music.
Do you have any tips to improve my speed when doing these hip rotations?
Still a complete novice in ballroomā¦but tryng to envision what style ballroom would match its music? Rumba?
