What are your top 5 songs?

I always find it super fascinating how much difference there is in opinions regarding Autechre. There is essentially not a single album I don't vibe with but my favorite songs are always the ones that play with sound design.

Anyways here are mine:

  1. pendulu hv moda (elseq 1)
  2. Violvoic
  3. ......

To be honest I can't even create this list.... There are too many good songs. I do however have one set which is my favorite and that is AE_LIVE_MELBOURNE_210618. Holy shit, its pure syrup, its bubbly its fresh and ethereal, I love every part of it

TURF FEINZ + iris was a pupil

Have always loved this vid, I just tried playing it with some AE and found that 'iris was a pupil' is really nice with it. tuinorizn was runner up. Neither perfectly synchs, but it's still a fun watch/listen. I only checked out tracks that are already around the running time of the vid, but I bet there's something out there that synchs even better.. hope yall can dig it.

Autechre vplayed two tracks from albums we released on our DIY label

Had to share because I think this is really cool and it kinda blows me away that they played not one but two tracks from our tiny little San Francisco DIY label Left Hand Path on their BBC6 resident mixes.

On mix three, they played ‘Scanner Dirge’ from ‘Idol Collapse’ by Forests 森林 from Taiwan: https://lefthandpathwax.bandcamp.com/album/idol-collapse

And on mix four, they played ‘Denizen Friend’ from ‘Pneumania’ by E L O N aka Elon Katz: https://lefthandpathwax.bandcamp.com/album/pneumania

That made my Sunday. Cool!

edit: oops dumb typo in post title and not sure how to fix it. argh

AE Live and AE Live 2016/18

Never really gave these a chance as someone who really likes their live stuff from the 00's, but now I'm starting to dig into the ae 2022 stuff and for the most part really enjoy it. Was just wondering how you guys would compare these two to what autechre are doing now

I have to rant about AE_2022-

I love these sets. This release prompted me to think deeper about the A sets, and I feel they've recently 'clicked.' And the new stuff is growing on me so much; I was ambivalent about a lot of it at first, but man, I think this is a top 3 AE release for me at this point. Depending how Sean and Rob add to this over the years, I can see a timeline where it hits top 1, which is just crazy.

The live format took some getting used to at first, but I'm growing fond of it. It fits with my lifestyle nicely. It's like throwing on a musical podcast and just letting it run for a while. Frankly, I wish this XXL sheer block of music thing was a more popular format. I guess because it's so technically hard to pull off for electronic musicians who typically just work in DAWs.

Deep listening to the Venice was giving me some incredible visuals completely sober. The depth in sound here is unbelievable. And with the boys' plan to expand this set for years to come, I can't wait to hear set J. How crazy is it that decades into their career, they're still evolving?

Close Encounters

There's a moment in the AE 2022 - sessions (I think it was Brussels I just randomly started on, but it's also the very first thing in the Lyon set) that I got a laugh out of since it was essentially the 5 note sequence that was made famous in the film Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Didn't think much of it and figured it was just coincidence.

Then I listened to the second BBC mix, and at the 22 minute mark there's a children's record ("Look with care for the shape of a square...") that's in the movie when the little boy's record player spins up by itself when the UFOs land. So, maybe not a coincidence.

Love that film, and it seems perhaps they found some inspiration in it, or at least they're having a laugh.

Outside of that, the mixes are incredible so far. Between this and the new live sets, it's a really good time to be an Autechre fan.

AITA for not liking HipHop as a Ae fan?

I think the BBC 6 mixes are totally fun, and an eclectic playlist that I can enjoy out of curiosity....but I have no appetite for Rap. Is this disallowed? I know the boys have spoken regularly about their deep love of HipHop, but I've not heard anything really substantial from them that demonstrated such previous to these mixes, outside of a few nods here and there. But now they're playing flippin' Amen Breaks? Like I say fun....but a bit confounding really.

Cipater

I’ve been listening to this track fairly regularly since 2004. Yes, the crossfader trick, yes it’s not a tempo or time sig change. Yes this track sounds like nothing else. Yes, YES! it still sounds like the future.

What's your current "ultra Autechre" track?

I go through phases of idolising a particular track and I bet you all do it too!

My current favourite track is Nodezsh.

The swing, rhythm, sound design, percussion, drones, reverb.

The way the drums evolve from an electronic mess to a structured and near-acoustic sounding tight as fuck rhythm is outstanding.

The way it changes is massive but also gradual.

So, what's your current ultra Autechre track?

The one you swear is your favourite... Until you decide another is.

Artist In Residence Programme data confirms four 'mixes'

Just to clear up any confusion, summary data for each programme slot confirms mixes:

6 Music's Artist In Residence welcomes the legendary Autechre to present the first/second/third/fourth of their four mixes this week.

While this doesn't rule out new/exclusive Autechre material entirely, it should set expectations a bit fairer for the outstanding broadcasts.
