Auckland alcohol sale law change 9/12/24

For anyone that didn't already know or finding out for the first time:

"From 9 December, off-licences such as bottle shops, supermarkets and other shops that sell alcohol to take away, will no longer be able to sell alcohol after 9pm in a change introduced under Auckland’s new local alcohol policy.

Advices on buying and using an used car in Auckland

Hi everyone,

I’ll be moving to Auckland in February 2025 and am planning to buy an SUV for my family of three, including a one-year-old child. I’m currently considering two options for buying a car:

  1. Budget under $10,000: I’d go for a cheaper, but hopefully reliable car. However, this likely means the car will be older and have higher mileage.
  2. Budget between $20,000–$30,000: This would allow me to get a newer car with lower mileage under similar conditions.

I’m wondering whether the overall cost of owning and maintaining a car would differ significantly between these two options. Specifically:

  • Can I assume that a cheaper car (under $10,000) will break down more often and result in higher repair costs?
  • Are there notable differences in running costs, like fuel and maintenance, between cheaper and more expensive cars?

My concern is that if I go with the under $10,000 option, the repair costs might add up over time, making it less cost-effective than investing in a newer car with fewer maintenance needs.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Interesting planes

Loud noise shook the whole neighbourhood in west Auckland, looked up and saw three planes flying together (war aircrafts?) What’s happening today? Never seen something this cool in Auckland, anyone else in the area heard or saw?

Cheap places to buy confectionery (Whittaker's, Mayceys, etc) in bulk?

Hey guys!

I'm a kiwi who lives overseas. I'm visiting my hometown for the end of the year.

I want to buy some gifts for people back at work (Over 30 people) so I'd like to buy some Whittaker's chocolate or Maycey candy in bulk, planning dropping around 200 NZD.

I was originally going to just visit New World or Park'N'Save to buy a bunch that's on sale, etc, but is there any place that I could buy them cheaper especially that I'm buying them in bulk?

Thank you in advance!

Cats and kittens

Hey folks.

I'm in need of some help.

I have a stray cat I've been feeding and looking after here and there for the last few weeks. I just leave some water out and some food in the back of my property and she come and goes sometimes.

So this cat has given birth on my property to a litter of kitten.

I don't know what to do. I don't mind keeping and feeding the mum but what about the kittens. I can't keep them forever but can keep them around till they get a bit more healthy.

Anyone know what to do? I would hate to seperate a mom from it's kittens but i also want them to live safely.

Dimmers Suck

Dimmers became popular long ago as they saved energy and money over time. With today's LED technology your savings are negligible. Instead DIRTY ELECTRICITY as a by-product has become even worse. Avoid cheap conventional dimmers! Dirty electricity sucks -- they don't want you to know and worry thou! Get a small old AM radio and approach a dimmer - and suddenly you know! Wow.

Looking for a nerd to come round to my house and help me with networking stuff

Hello

Thought I'd post here cause I know alot of IT people are subscribed.

I have a home server which is mainly for Plex but I use some of it as storage. Wanting to expand it to a RAID 5 set up.

I like tinkering and have set up the Plex by using tutorials but truth be told I don't know if I'm using the right security settings on it and I'd rather pay a professional to come and help me set it up properly.

I use TRUENAS and am wanting to put Nextcloud on it so I can use storage for family photos and just more generally get more into self hosting things so I can rely less on big tech. I'm open to usi g s different OS if you think it's a better solution for my needs.

If you are familiar with those applications and know home networking well I'd love to hear from you.

And yes of course I'll pay you.

Thank you

Cheap travel vaccinations?

I’m travelling to India and it’s recommended I get a few vaccinations before I leave.

Does anyone know a travel clinic/doctor that doesn’t charge a huge amount for a consult and vaccinations?

Also, if anyone can recommend which vaccines I would need that would be great! I only want to get the necessary ones.

I’ve called a couple clinics and they’re quoting $150 for a consult and around $130 for each vaccine which is way more expensive than I initially thought.

Thanks in advance 🙏🏼

Why mount the curb?

He can legally park on the road.

The dotted yellow line stops before rear of his vehicle and it’s a two lane road. There are other cars parked only a mere few meters further down.

Normally I don’t mind but his response when I politely told him it was legal and ok to park on the road brought out the pettiness in me. “I’m here for reasons,” and “you can still get past, there’s plenty of space.” This just irked me. That wasn’t the point. It wasn’t necessary to mount the curb in the first place.

In summary, fuck this entitled prick.

Time taken for customs and biosecurity check at International terminal

Hi, I'll be landing at Auckland Airport from overseas around 3:05 pm and I have a domestic flight to catch at 5:00 pm.

I have luggage with things to declare and my passport is not compatible with e-gate either, so long story short will I be able to board my domestic flight?

(It's not on one ticket so I will have to check in my bags myself)
