Job Hunting

Man, this job market is crazy. Can't even get a cleaner job as a student. Dad also couldn't get a job with 40 years of experience in agriculture (albeit overseas). Anyone in the same position as we are?

AT Hop: no more off peak fares from Feb, ???

Saw it on RNZ website, and fares are going up.

So all fares will be the same price, no matter what time of the day travel is made.

Any wider news?

I live in Aus, but visit Auckland, pity if off peak fares are no longer in effect.

Those who have been struggling to find work… how is the new year treating you?

I’m going on almost a year of being unemployed. I’m very employable, I’m social, I have a degree, great references in different industries but nothing seems to work in this current economy.

Last year I had around 60-70 job applications, didn’t get a single phone call back. Automatic email declines within the next 1-2 months. A few recruiters put me forward for roles, with the employer ending up going for “someone more experienced” despite my experience sufficient for the ad. Not even an interview.

My friends in HR have checked over my CV, it’s professional, concise; reads well, and no issues there.

I’m feeling like I’m at the end of my straw here. As someone who changed industries a couple of times in wondering if that’s caused the broken link for me in this over-competitive market.

Funnily, I actually love job interviews, so I’m just waiting for that one that will give me a call and get me in the interview set so I can sell my worth. But it’s taking way too many hurdles (and way too long) to even secure an interview.

How’s everyone else coming along with the job search?

Killing Time Before Check-In

Hey everyone!

Heading to auckland in February and I land at 5 am after a brutal 20 hours of traveling. Problem is I can't check into my hostel until 2pm.

Any advice on how I should kill time before my check in? My main concern is that I'm going to be absolutely exhausted with two big ol suitcases with me. With all that on me I cant be falling asleep in a random café nor do I wanna be lugging all that shit around. Thinking right now I'll just chill in the airport but that sounds kinda ass if I ain't gonna lie.

Any tips appreciated!

Whenuapai pros and cons

We are house hunting in our 30s with a 4yo and newborn. We are looking around Hobsonville , Whenuapai and Albany/ north shore area. But do like the houses at Whenuapai. Hubby works at rosedale and I work at city fringe but have flexible time.

Can anyone provide some insights on living in Whenuapai? Hobsonville seem abit too dense.

Eg : how's the primary school like, is the airforce base really a pain? Any flood prone areas?

The Job Market

hello everyone, I just moved here about 4 months ago and I spent most of December and January trying to find a job in my field, but it's been tough. I'm in the creative industry and I'm a professional cinematographer. Is this normal? Would appreciate some clarity so it could help with what I could do next. Thank you everyone for taking the time to even read this.

Couldn’t tag off using eftpos

I tagged onto the 11w using my eftpos card and when I tried to tag off it said there was an error on both tag on/off machines. I’m wondering does it keep charging me until the end of the line? And if so is there any way to dispute the charge ie do I call my bank or contact AT? Nga mihi xx

Plastic taste in water

I moved out west a year ago and noticed the plastic taste in the water soon after. The taste is quite noticeable even after boiling.

It was a new build so I thought maybe the pipe is still new and the taste will go away after a couple of months.

Well, It’s been a year and it has not gone away.

Does anyone else notice the taste or am I being too sensitive.

Is it just me or do we need way more Highrise Apartments

I understand we all have a gripe with apartments for many good reasons but I can't stop hitting my head at the wall about how over idealistic we are being when it comes to housing. Housing is to do with supply/demand so we need more supply, why complain when we see space efficient supply? I feel like it's important we unite on this stuff.

I go up Mt Eden and look around; All you see is houses spanning forever taking up so much space, each one fitting maybe 5 people max all of them driving kilometers away - bottlenecking into the city of office spaces. Backyard BBQ kiwi dream right? but there's a crisis. The same area could hold high-rises enough for 50+ people each. I love a town house but we have to be realistic I think we need a shift in attitude.

I think we have to really accept that we are a dense city and town houses are a luxury not a necessity in a dense city.

EDIT: Totally agree, in practice we have a quality problem with apartments but I believe that with scarcity low quality builds thrive a lot more.

Awful service at new world, what should I do

I encountered a really awful experience at a new world near me yesterday. I was on a walk and hence I was with my dog I got my cousin to go in and I waited outside with my dog and had a item I wanted my cousin to buy for me some sugar for baking. She purchases and comes out and when checking I realised she bought the wrong item and she did not want to go back in so I offered to go in and return/exchange the sugar for the correct type I needed.

I go in explaining what has happened saying “could I return this please as my cousin has bought the wrong one.” The lady gives me a very frustrated look and started lecturing me ignoring every aspect of what my perspective was. I kept repeatedly telling her my cousin was the one that went in to buy it and she grabbed the wrong one. I would say this is a honest mistake and a mistake that can get easily made. Keep in mind my cousin is 10 and I am 14.

So this full grown lady/ employee lecturing a customer and a kid yelling at me in the store. She starts telling me “you can’t buy things then return it” I told her in my response “my cousin was the one that bought it as I was outside” she told me “you need to think before you buy things and not be so stupid” at this point I was quite pissed at her for saying things like this to me and yelling at me quite rudely. I responded to her quite politely this whole time as she was like fighting with me because I want to return this item. I said again “I wasn’t the one that went in to buy it.” She gives me an eye roll.

She then finally takes a look at the receipt then issues the refund and was giving me a attitude the whole time and puts the paper and pen on the counter and angrily aggressively points at it to me and was like “you need to sign this.” I sign it and then she gives the refunded amount back and shoos me off with her hand.

I was going to ask for the receipt as there was other items in the purchase still but I didn’t bother and my original plan was to go back and buy the correct sugar and I decided ultimately to not bother as I didn’t want to encounter her anymore after how rudely she treated me.

She was a middle aged Asian maybe Korean or chinese? Women. Disgusting behaviour especially towards a kid. Absolutely disgusting and shameful to the shop reputation and she definitely did not uphold the company mottos. Despite me being a child, I am definitely far more capable of upholding values unlike her.

This isn’t the first negative interaction at this branch I have had. The security guard came up to me and took my phone off me because I was taking a photo of the olive oil options available to my mum asking which to buy. He told me “you’re not allowed to take photos” I’m going to delete it. I explained to him what I was doing with no negative intention of doing anything with the photo whatsoever so it resulted in me buying a random one since I couldn’t show my mum a photo. Absolutely ridiculous. Unfortunately it is the only store near us.

I checked the reviews and many are about the bad interactions with staff at the store or a lot about the security guard randomly accusing people of things.

Intimate Wedding Ceremony Venues in Akl Central?

Does anybody know of any "hidden gem" type locations for an intimate wedding ceremony in Central Auckland? Only 30ish people. We already have a location for the Reception in the city, but its not great for the ceremony itself. Ideally not a church, ideally somewhere with a bad weather contingency.

Most places understandably offer the full ceremony + reception package as that's how they make their money, but with the (future) wifey set on the reception location already we just need to nail down the ceremony.

House hunting? Reminder for everyone to do their due diligence.

https://www.realestate.co.nz/42686559/residential/sale/49-jacaranda-avenue-beach-haven

Thought 1.2M was a good deal for a coastal home with a direct path to Charcoal bay (even though its Beach Haven). The view is great!

The entire property is built on a slope and was sent all the documents and found out there was a slip during the Auckland anniversary. Spent 2 hours reading through all of the insurance details, geotechnical assessments, engineering reports etc.

There was an insurance and EQC payout for almost 200K to build 3 retaining walls, fill in evacuated land, add in some soil anchors, clean/repaint some cladding on the walls and fix the steps. Going through their initial LIMs report, I was surprised they didn't add these features in to begin with considering the slope of the land. I thought "this house is safer than before" with these additions.

Went to the property for a house viewing and found out that none of the work was done even though the reports indicate several imminent risks in the near future (this was at least a year ago). Turns out the owner is just pocketing the payout and selling the home.

Legal? Yes. Ethical? Probably not. It means that if you were to buy the house, you're working against the clock to fix the land incase of a slip after a bad weather event. Furthermore, insurance does not cover any existing damage so anything that can potentially happen might not be covered. There's also the high insurance premiums.

Anyways, the real estate agent said the house was fine and that the slip on the side of the property only needed an anchor mat + some landscaping. Also that the estimates to fix the slip is 50k to max 150k.

Documents clearly states ~200k worth of work (all itemized). She does not mention the evacuated land + cracking of the soil near the foundations, 3 retaining walls etc. and the imminent risks. Too many red flags from the nature of this deal (shady af).

Edit: 49 Jacaranda Avenue - For the google search algo.

Interesting requests from beggars

I just got approached by a guy outside Countdown/Real Groovy, asking if I had $13 to buy him a CD... I couldn't do it, but wanted to know which album. They had a copy of New Edition's "Candy Girl" for $12.95, and he really wanted it. Wish I wasn't so broke :/

Anybody else had interesting requests? Or in a position to help the brother out? 🤷

British lady who just moved to Auckland and I’m happy with the clothes!

Hi I’m a British lady, I’m 30 years old. I just moved here in early December - I’m on a working holiday Visa. I work in hospitality. I’m pretty happy with the clothes I can find at Kmart. I’ve found cotton clothes there too such as T-shirts, long sleeve shirts, dresses and some pants. I think it’s good and I can afford it. I think the items seem to be good quality what I found so far. Cheers!

Navigating inappropriate behaviour from my boss

Hi everyone, I love my job, but I’ve been struggling with inappropriate behavior from my boss. He often checks me out in an obvious way and makes comments that feel unprofessional and uncomfortable.

Lately, I’ve found myself changing how I dress at work, opting for baggy clothes to avoid drawing attention. For example, he recently made a joke about me hiding a pregnancy. I didn’t respond because I don’t want to discuss my personal life with him, but the comment left me feeling awkward and offended. He knows I came out of a long-term relationship last year, which makes his remarks even more uncomfortable.

I’ve tried setting physical boundaries, such as rearranging my desk to stop him from standing too close or looking over my shoulder. I also don’t respond to his texts unless they’re strictly work-related.

Does anyone have advice on how to handle this professionally? Should I document these incidents or escalate them to HR? I want to address this without jeopardizing my role or creating tension in the workplace.

Any tips or resources would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Selling home - Rates

Hey,
I am selling a home now, and rates are due for the next half year:

26/11/2024 to 25/05/2025

We will likely sell in the next month.

Should I be doing partial payment and the new owner takes over the remainder based on percentage of time owned during this period?
