The mildenhall treasure was found in 1942 by a ploughman (Gordon Butcher) and his boss, it just so happens that the boss (Sydney Ford) was my great great grandfather. Roahl Darl famously wrote a book on this treasure but tried to make it out as if Sydney Ford was in the wrong about keeping the treasure but really its just because he didnt want to talk to Roahl about it. You can also listen to my Grandfather talk about this on a BBC country program.
Clonmacnoise is a monastic site in County Offaly on the banks of the River Shannon. The monastery was founded by Saint Ciarán in 544. One of the most remarkable artifacts from the site is this high cross (or Celtic cross) known as the Cross of the Scriptures, named for the carvings of biblical scenes carved into it. The cross stood west of the cathedral, but was moved to the nearby visitors center to better preserve it in 1991. A replica stands on the original site. Originally, the cross would’ve been brightly painted, though all the paint has worn off. It stands just under 4m tall.
Figure is made of ceramic buffware with polychrome and likely represents a deity or an important individual in Mixtec society. The raised hand might signify a gesture of blessing, power, or communication.
It is currently housed in the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland.
