First I would like to apologize if my English is not the best as I am using a translator.
Let's go, I recently acquired a new laptop, a Dell G15 5530, and since it came with Linux and I wanted to learn Linux I decided to just switch to Zorin OS. However, I'm having several problems, when I'm using it sometimes it crashes, Firefox stops responding, the other apps also stop responding and I don't know what to do, I don't know if it could have been an installation error or something like that, because it's crashing a lot, I'm even thinking about switching to Windows to see if it solves it, because I have no idea how to solve it, I want to use Zorin OS but because of these problems I'm almost giving up, I wanted to see if you know how I can try to solve this and if it was something I could have done. Do you know what it could be and how to solve it?
edit: From what I'm checking it must be an error in the Download, I'm not sure yet, but I'm trying to reinstall to see if it solves the problem.
Does Zorin support ARM chips? I wish to get a Snapdragon X laptop, but I'm still unsure about its plausibility with Linux in General. Anyone ever tried it? If so what's your experience with it? What do I stand to lose?
The title is self-explanatory. My games were running incredibly poorly—genuinely hitting only 10 frames per second at most.
So, I decided to install some Nvidia drivers via the terminal, which resolved the issue. However, after rebooting, my WiFi completely stopped working.
Nothing has changed with my hardware; it’s simply not detecting the WiFi. I can’t download any WiFi drivers since I’m not connected to the internet.
A bit of a tricky situation.
title.
On a an HP 360 Convertible laptop that had already been running Zorin 7.2 64 bit without any issues, I had to replace a cracked display. The new display works just fine, but the laptop seems to be going into tablet mode automatically at bootup. I can only log in and do anything by using the on-screen keyboard. The keyboard and trackpad don't work at all in Zorin. But the keyboard works just fine when navigating the BIOS menu, so I don't think that this is a hardware issue with the keyboard or trackpad.
I already tried resetting the BIOS to default settings and don't even see anything in there for enabling or disabling input devices.
The trackpad is selected to be enabled in the Zorin settings menu. There doesn't seem to be an option to enable or disable the keyboard in the keyboard settings.
Anyone have suggestions for what else to try? Is it possible that the replacement display is signalling the OS to go into tablet mode because of a hardware installation or compatibility issue? I cannot find an obvious Zorin menu in which to toggle tablet mode on or off.
Hii, I got a laptop from my uncle which uses zorin and I am going mad just trying to download roblox
It's led me to vinegar, then to wine, and idk how to set up either so now im just kinda stuck staring at my laptop </3
Edit: Also upon further exploration, I cant really download steam games either, so I really am just kinda stuck with YouTube lmfao
I recently started using Linux and saw a lot of people saying that this distribution was easy to use. But I have a problem, I downloaded Steam and every time I try to enter CS the system crashes and goes to a black screen without even opening the game, do you know what it could be?
Hi,
at the moment i'm on Linux Mint, but in the last month i read a lot about Zorin OS and i'm curious about it.
My question are:
- The last version of Zorin is 17.2, when there is an update (17.3--->17.4 etc...) i can upgrade it without clean install or no? (on mint we can upgrade very easily)
- Zorin 17.2 is based on Wayland or use the old Xorg?
- It use AppArmor or SE Linux or other security system?
- It use a default Firewall?
Thanks a lot
I tried to upgrade from 16.3(?) to 17.2 yesterday, but it seemingly got stuck on "Installing the upgrades". I could still use my computer, but sound did not work. I figure I could wait and keep using the computer for browsing or gaming anyway so I did. I went to bed and the computer was still on "Installing the Upgrade" with no sign of improving. Hoping it would be fixed when I woke up, I turned off the monitors and just went to bed. I woke up to find the computer was still "Installing the upgrade" and in a lapse of judgement I turned off the computer...
Turning it back on, I could only access my BioS, and a screen that had "Advanced options for Zorin OS" and another option that I'm assuming just tried to boot normally (though the screen would remain dark). Under advanced options there was an option to use Linux 6.-something and another that was the exact line but with recovery mode attached at the end. I tried both, but neither succeeded. The one without recovery led to a dark screen and recovery mode led to a series of lines that suggested it failed to boot (see first picture).
First image, trying linux recovery mode version 6.-something
So then I tried the 5.-something version of recovery and it led to another screen where an option said I could try and repair files, so I chose that... But now it seems to be stuck here. I'm not sure what I should try next. I don't have any particular files I am wary of losing, so failing everything I could do a fresh install. I wanted to avoid it, but maybe thats the best option? Should I just wait longer?
Tl;Dr: I was an impatient idiot and ruined things. Really wish we had more clear indication on loading bars that said how much something should take or when something should worry you.
On a somewhat related note, how long should the OS upgrade take? Mine was taking over 24 hours, and stuck on "installing the upgrades" for over 18 hours, with no end in sight... But the process seemed so vague I couldn't really tell.
Hi, I am a new Zorin user and so far I am quite happy with the OS, except for one issue which is hindering my ability to work in a major way. It is the visual effect of the active window darkening when there's a popup.
Here's a video of the effect:
https://reddit.com/link/1gbx7v1/video/8qwgdw308xwd1/player
This effect makes it hard to work in Krita, for example when I want to tweak colours of an image, because the darkening effect obviously affects values and colours of everything below it, including the image I am trying to tweak, and I have to compensate for that when adjusting the colours through the popup which is really annoying.
Does anyone know if there is a way to turn this effect off? I have looked through settings but did not find a way to turn it off. Turning off animations did not help with this issue.
I’m a big fan of this OS. The only thing I have problems with is my IPhone. I listen to a ton of audiobooks and need to convert mp3 files into a single mb4 file and transfer to my Iphone. Anybody have any luck with this?
I've had Zorin 16 pro ever since release, and it has been a pleasant experience, especially coming from Linux Mint. Everything just worked, and I had the peace of mind from Mint here too.
So recently, I kinda messed up some Boot files which essentially made me locked out of Windows (which I dual boot because I still need to use because: Adobe...). So I thought, I might as well start afresh with the Latest Zorin, which is 17.2. And now I'm 2 weeks in
The experience had been pleasant with nice QoL features, and small UI improvements and I'm mostly satisfied. That said, I occasionally experience some unnerving issues.
Firefox now randomly crashes, and when the PC wakes up from sleep or Standby, it just reboots abruptly.
Now I'm not sure if the Firefox issue is Zorin's fault, but the Standby issue seems to be a known bug, apparently. So it may be fixed? Hopefully?
Anyway, my take is; Anyone interested in upgrading should definately do it. Its better than the previous version, and totally worth it....
Hello Everyone.
I need a help with configuring the partitions on zorinOS like windows, I know that there is a concept of filesystems, and I created a /home filesystem as my main filesystem away from root filesystem.
But I want to see the /home as a partition, so next time I want to change the distro, I have my files on /home and I can go directly to the / directory and reinstall linux.
I will really appreciate any links or documents to read from, or videos as well.
Yes or No?
Hello everyone!
I know, many will se this as heresy, but I don't really like the Zorin OS theme. I love how everything works out of the box tho, so I like using it.
Is it possible for me to use the stock gnome libadwaita, just like it is on Fedora?
Changing the theme in Zorin Appearence only gets me the old, not good looking adwaita theme.
????
As an example, I had discord open earlier today and in the top left corner those 3 things were populated. I'm running an Nvidia card, and I've been known to mess around with settings i quickly Google. But, I can't seem to find a setting to remove this. Checked the GeForce experience tabs what feels like thoroughly. I'm too new to be messing with command prompts.
Anyone have any ideas? I run updates every time I'm on so assume everything is up to date. I'm going to bed now as I'm tired of looking for an answer myself. CGPT came up with a bunch of ideas but none worked.
Thank you for taking the time.
I have Zorin Os 17.2 newly installed on my laptop, which is connected to an external screen with speaker via HDMI.
I installed Slack in Flatpak format and the notifications appear, but the sound is not played, I've already checked the settings and the audio is as output to the HDMI output, the call audio comes out through HDMI but the notification sound is not, can someone help me with that?
I installed Zorin today, just to get rid of "stupid" windows. However i see that i have to enter password for even running chrome? 5 minutes later i want to install an app and it asks for password. 3 minutes later i want to install another app and guess what? Password again. I want to fucking reboot the system (and there is no option to reboot in the main power button), and it still it fucking asks the password
O yes, i tried user_name ALL=(ALL:ALL) NOPASSWD:ALL and it didnt change a thing.
I dont give a fuck to security, i dont want to be harassed by passwords, only to run chrome. Nobody ever cares about the computer of a 20 yo person. Im not CIA. Offer me security and if i dont want it, then stop bothering me with your stupid shit.
Is there a way to get rid of this? If not, im removing this stupid + disgusting operating system.
Dual-booting Windows 11 with Zorin 17 Core. In my Zorin system the download speed is usually around 100-300 KB/s. Download speeds on my Windows system are normal. Any help?
I get the same results whether downloading from the pkg manager, terminal, or browser
Greetings, I’m a student and an ex-Windows user, currently a happy Zorin OS user.
I used to use Windows 8.1 since I have always hated Windows 10 and steered clear of it. I use my daily driver (a Dell Latitude E5420 laptop with an i5-2520m, 8 gigs of RAM initially and a 480GB Kingston A400 SSD, which I picked up secondhand and had upgraded in 2019 from 4 gigs of RAM and a spinning HDD) for schoolwork, occasional media consumption, light audio work on Audacity, casual gaming (with an EGPU, but not too FPS-heavy) and on-the-go virtualisation.
I first tried Linux on the daily driver in question in September 2021, choosing Zorin OS 16 Core as my test distro. Prior to that, I had tested (on VMs) Ubuntu and Linux Mint, two of the most talked-about “distros for Linux newbies switching from Windows”, but I had my fair share of issues with both. I just couldn’t find my way around the system in both distros. In addition, I was not quite comfortable with using the terminal to change every third setting.
(I have since revisited Ubuntu and Linux Mint in VMs and, I must say, they are both great distros in their own right)
I did some more research online, discovered Zorin OS and thought it would offer me a better experience than the former two distros. I tried it on another VM and was pleasantly surprised by the polished user experience and performance of the OS, even on virtual hardware. I decided to try it out on bare metal and was even more impressed. However, the CPU would throttle even while performing some basic tasks. Installing TLP helped solve the problem (and helped me learn basic command line operations!). I now started to try my hand at customising my OS, which I learned pretty quickly.
However, my earlier school required me to use MS Office 2019 (which, like Windows 10, I despise), for which Linux support was suboptimal. I also used to play Open Rails, a train simulator which I have unsuccessfully atempted to install on Linux with Wine. I had only 8 gigs of RAM at the time; hence, gaming on a VM was not a good option. I have since upgraded my RAM to 16 gigs and changed schools.
This forced me to switch back to Windows 8.1 in 2022 (I wrecked my Linux install trying to dualboot with Windows). I continued to use it all through 2023, but this year, I decided to give Zorin another look. I found that version 17 had released and, according to the developers, it improved upon the user experience. The installation process was, in fact, quicker than that of Zorin 16 on the same SSD (clean install).
The window effects felt smoother on Zorin 17 as compared to Zorin 16 (is it due to Wayland being the default on Zorin 17 as opposed to Xorg on version 16?). The Zorin devs claim that the system uses only about 1.5 gigs of RAM on idle, but I have, in fact, recorded (on Gnome system monitor) an overall RAM consumption of only 1.1 gigabyte on one occasion! I can now run all of my desired applications with minimal problems. I have also been introduced to the wonderful world of open source software. There are welcome improvements in the desktop experience since version 17 uses a newer version of Gnome. The CPU throttle which I mentioned earlier was reduced on a clean install. I now use tuned to manage my power consumption and it gives excellent results.
I also notice that VMware Workstation VMs run faster on my Zorin 17 host system than they ever did on Windows 8.1! I am curious about the reason for the same.
Another thing I have noticed about Zorin OS is that on the first boot after a fresh install, all the device drivers were installed and my laptop was ready to use. I have never noticed this on my installs of Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8.0, 8.1, 10 and 11 (all x64). At least two drivers (usually the video and network drivers) would have to be installed manually using Driver Booster. The device driver support offered is truly praiseworthy.
I'm now making rapid progress learning Linux :) I've also tried more distros with various desktop environments and window managers on VMs.
I am convinced that I do not need to revert to Windows ever again. I will definitely purchase the Pro version when I have the means to do so. The developers deserve all the support we can give them and more.
Zorin is up there as one of the top distros which can be used easily by Linux novices and power users alike. Zorin Rocks!
P.S. : English is not my native language. Please do not hesitate to correct me if I have made any linguistic errors. Us Linux community members are all willing to learn from each other, aren’t we?
I’m from India, which, in fact, stands as one of the fastest growing markets for desktop Linux!
Side note: I notice that I have used too may parentheses.
Side note 2: I notice that I have used the phrase "I notice" too many times.
Side note 3: Which flair must this post go in?
What to do ??
Question from a novice Linux user. $50 for the Pro version is quite a lot. The only feature I would want is a macOS style layout. Is it possible to get it any other way?
I just dug out my 20 year old laptop with Zorin 9 , and vista installed on it. I want to get all photos and video from it. I have found most, but not sure if any are in places ive not checked. Is there an easy way to scan for them, or a tool?
Thanks
