Chasing aurora in Whitehorse

Hi everyone,

My husband and I are planning to visit Whitehorse this February for three days and two nights to hopefully see the aurora for the first time as honeymoon. I'm thinking of booking a hotel at the Raven Inn and buying flight tickets myself. However, I'm not sure about transportation—does Whitehorse have Uber or similar services?

There are three main activities I'd like to do: see the aurora, try dog sledding, and visit the Yukon Wildlife Preserve.

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Peak Smart, recommended? How to go about getting it?

Hey all,

Wondering if anyone enrolled into peak smart and would recommend it? We have seen 2x spike in our bills and we’re thinking to enroll into the program.

Any idea how much it costs to install the hardware (say 4 thermostats and 1 water heater control)? Recommendations on the electricians?

How long do you have to be enrolled into peak smart to stay eligible for the rebate? If say my timings change a year later and I need regular heat at normal hours, does it mean claw back on rebates?

Really looking forward to responses :) tia

Working holiday: looking for suggestions!

I've just got my work holiday visa and I guess the timing is a bit tricky. Dawson City seems to have some summer opportunities from May, just want to know what might be available between February and May?

I know housing is brutal and jobs with staff accommodation is highly recommended, anyone knows how those staff accommodation look like?

Thanks in advance!

Pet insurance suggestions?

I've been holding myself back from adopting a pup due to student debt, but I'm unsure where the line is before I 'should' feel comfortable getting one.

I've been looking into insurance as my fear is getting one and dealing with medical bills out of nowhere that could sink me. Any suggestions from pet owners with a frugal (but responsible) mindset?

I think about owning one constantly, but have a large fear of the financial stress associated with it 😔

Alpine Vet owned by NVA Canada?

Watching CBC Marketplace and The Fifth Estate about pet care in Canada. And how many vet clinics are owned by 3 major corporations in Canada. So out of curiosity, I went to the websites of these corporations and found that Alpine Vet is owned by NVA Canada! https://www.nvacanada.ca/our-locations/

I know the service there has changed over the last year. Last summer, my pup got sick and I left several messages to make an appointment and never got a call back, which was frustrating. So went down to the clinic to talk to them, only to see they weren’t answering the phones and all the phones had flashing red light happening but never rang.

Anyone know if they have always been part of NVA Canada or if this is something new?

City = garbage

I live in a condo with 90 units and 200+ resident. I don't know if it's language barriers, different cultures, or what, but despite YEARS of our condo board trying to educate residents about what is/isn't compost, people continue to contaminate the compost bins with plastic etc.

As a result, COW is refusing to pick up the compost. They won't pick it up until it's clean but we can't clean it since it's a giant frozen brick so it needs to be thrown in the trash, but no one can lift it to the dumpster (see: giant frozen brick).

So the birds pick at it, trash gets everywhere and everyone starts throwing their compostables in the dumpster since the compost bins are full. Now COW starts fining the condo board.

The condo has done everything it can to educate people (flyers, posters, newsletters, emails, links to the COW app) but a few people aren't getting the memo.

Since this has been going on for YEARS, the condo wants to get rid of the compost bins but COW also threatened to fine us for NOT having the bins. So now we are fined for having bins and fined for not having bins.

On top of it all, COW does not offer curbside recycling to condos. So we now have 200+ residents throwing recyclables and compostables directly in the dumpster.

I understand that people need to be held accountable for things like contaminated recycling. But I also know that restrictive policies and absurdist fines don't always work. This behaviour from COW is irrational in the face of their very public advocacy for waste diversion measures.

I'm beyond frustrated that my home is littered with garbage and that even though I follow the rules, I am punished for my neighbours who can't. Anyone else in condo-land going through this??

Old Crow the Yukon hotspot!

For the second day in a row, Old Crow is the warmest place in the Yukon at +2.1C. It’s currently raining here! Other than the blanket rationale of ‘climate change’, what is going on here to make the territory’s most northerly community also the warmest??

Tombstone Territorial Park Reservations?

We'd like to drag our trailer up to the Tombstone Provincial Park and stay a couple days during June. Unfortunately, the website for the Park doesn't provide an opening day for making reservations, and currently shows "No Availability" for the days we'd like. Are we too early, or have we missed the boat?

If the boat has already sailed.....any good boondocking sites nearby?

What's a business in the Yukon that makes you wonder how they are still in business?

For me it's the Trophy Shop in the elite hotel. Maybe it's just a personal bias because I haven't received a trophy in 30 years, but every time I walk by I wonder how many trophies you need to sell to pay the rent.

What are the roads like in february?

least year I impulsively road tripped across pretty much the entire trans canada highway in march with no plan or itinerary and am trying to think of my next thing to do. was thinking maybe I would drive from calgary to whitehorse. for reference my vehicle is just a regular chevy express cargo van with 2 wheel drive and all seasons. I have never been to the yukon so im just asking in simple ignorance what are the roads like lol ? Ill probably buy a set of winter tires but like is that a drive people can do in just a regular car ? sorry if I sound uneducated just not familiar and want to explore our country.

Electrical Engineering internships?

I'm an electrical engineering student in a coop program and I'm wondering how easy it would be to find an internship anywhere in Yukon in the power sector. It's always been a dream of mine to reside in the Canadian north, even if its for a few months only. If anyone has any knowledge please reach out to me.

Decent cappuccino?

Is there anywhere in Whitehorse to get a decent cappuccino? Something that actually resembles what you would get in Italy? I’ve given up on Baked, their baristas are terrible and I’ve never been a fan of Starbucks, who supersize everything. Any recommendations? Or are we in a coffee wasteland?
