Missing window title bars on Xubuntu session

I have just switched to Xubuntu, everything was going great, until I rebooted after upgrade. It seems xfwm4 can't start. I tried by deleting the session file in .cache folder without luck.

However, I'm able to start session successfully using the XFCE session insted of Xubuntu session in the login menu. However, it seems XFCE session has some tearing when scrolling.

Do you have any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks in advance.

Suggestions to disable Ctrl-Alt-Del

I'm developing a custom Xubuntu (24.04) kiosk and I need to get rid of the Ctrl-Alt-Del keyboard function that currently logs my user out.

Where do I look for this, and similar, key combination configurations (like Alt-Printscreen) to make them do nothing?

Thanks!

Can I safely stay with 22.04 after EOL?

I'm a longtime Xubuntu user and have been happily using 22.04 on all of my machines for several years. I am not a technician, and have been delighted with the way it pretty much "just works", at least for me. I'm aware that 22.04 reaches EOL in April 25, and my question might be an obvious one - but can I safely stay with 22.04 and NOT upgrade to 24.04? My preference is for LTS and I just can't get along with 24.04 - I've had major problems on every single machine I've tried it on. If I can stay with 22.04, how do I update to stay safe please? Thank you in advance.

"Interesting" upgrade to 24.04

I have been running a 2006-vintage PC as a Xubuntu box since 2012. Literally installed Xubuntu 12.04 in July 2012 and have been upgrading ever since. Hadn't seen much use since about late 2014, but I dust it off every two years to make sure it upgrades.

Attempted an upgrade two days ago and it failed partway through, leaving the system unable to boot to the login screen. But fear not. By choosing "advanced options" at boot and going into recovery mode for kernel 5.15 (from xubuntu 22.04) I could enable networking, then get to a command line where I could command apt to fix broken packages, then install the upgrade packages. After getting back to a working desktop, I could complete the upgrade under software updater.

A bit more of a pain than a straightforward upgrade or even a reinstall, but satisfying to see it work in the end. I just have to tweak my taskbar and remove a decade of old kernels, then I'll be good to go. Thanks again to the Debian, Ubuntu & Xubuntu teams for a foolproof OS.

Media starts playing automatically from paused state.

There is this strange problem where I pause my video or audio musics for doing some other work like bringing snacks but it starts playing the media that I paused automatically. I thought it has FireFox problem but even after switching to Brave the problems the same and even musics in RythmBox. Tried to fix this but was unsuccessfull.

constantly crashing during install

xubuntu-24.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso

first error the installer would just crash at random invervals, booting safe graphics solved that

now it crashes at the exact same point during install, I tried not selecting any additional options, I tried default language settings, to the point only thing I am changing is telling the installer to use LVM encrypted install.

crashing every time, verified SHA256, tried it on several different computers same result

pulling up the log seems like its failing to execute lvcreate exit code 5 "unexpected error while running command" (lvcreate)

suggestion?

New setup is this normal?

On a fresh install of Xubuntu it boots into grub. I then select Ubuntu to boot.

I just came from an Ubuntu install and want to make sure it erased it all.

Secondly there was gnome-services selected on the start menu. Is it ok to disable that?

I may want a text editor called gedit for autosave. (or something else)

Thanks

My favorite distro for old laptops.

Xubuntu is one of my favorite distros, I just love how fast is to use and always install on the old laptop of someone wanting a fast experience.

I am just anxious to see when 4.20 comes out officially in Xubuntu to change again my distro.

Black screen after logging in Xubuntu 22.04 upgrade from 20.04

I upgraded to Xubuntu 22.04 from 20.04. I now have an issue where the screen turns black just after logging in. I have tried following this hack. The problem seems to be with profile personalisation, but I'm not sure. The instructions in the article work but somehow, after booting again, the issue returns. Is there a permanent solution to this problem? I'm using a HP with AMD Radeon 2 graphics. I already reinstalled the graphics drivers. I can't use it with nomodeset, because the laptop turns on full screen brightness, and I can't use it that way

xubuntu telemetry

I have an inquiry regarding Xubuntu. Does Xubuntu gather telemetry data? If it does, what is the scope of this data collection? What is the procedure for disabling it?

[Issue] Xubuntu 24.04 LTS Loading Screen Not Centered - Any Solutions?

Hey Xubuntu community,

I recently updated to Xubuntu 24.04 LTS and noticed something odd. The loading screen (the one with the Xubuntu logo) isn't centered on my screen. Instead, it appears shifted towards the left side.

Has anyone else encountered this issue? Here are some details about my setup:

  • Device: HP-430 (2012)
  • Graphics Card: none

This might seem like a minor issue, but it's quite noticeable on my setup, and I'm curious if there's a known fix or if others are experiencing the same thing. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Edit: If you've encountered this before or have any tips on how to adjust the boot screen alignment, please share! Also, if you need more information about my system, just ask.

Cannot install XUbuntu 24.04.1

Hi guys! I'm running into issues installing XUbuntu 24.04.1... I have downloaded the ISO fileĀ "xubuntu-24.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso"Ā from theĀ official website.Ā When I create the Virtual Machine and run it, I get the error of the image.

I have tried installing a previous XUbuntu version (20.04.6) and it worked fine. Do you have any idea of what could be happening? Thank you!

Every element in the UI looks too small

I have recently installed Xubuntu 22.04 on a brand new Asus Zenbook. However, every single element in the UI looks too small.

I managed to remediate this by increasing font size and the panel icon size in settings, but some things still look too small, such as the default size of windows and menus and the windows tabs when they are minimized.

I read somewhere this is because Xfce still doesn't properly support displays of higher resolution and I would need to use something else like KDE instead. I really like Xubuntu's smaller resource usage though, so if someone knows a workaround for this I would be glad to try it.

How to know xubuntu version?

I am running xubuntu on my pc.

How do I know my version of xubuntu?

Background: I am fairly new to Linux in general. I tried using

lsb_release -a cat /etc/issue

Bith yielded the same results listing mote or less Ubuntu etc....

Now I do know that xubuntu is a distro that is evolved from Ubuntu, or if I am using the term correctly, downstream from it, so I am aware there is a connection, but I am very confused to see Ubuntu listed as a response.

After all when I log on, there is this big bright 'uuge xubuntu logo on my screen.

Anyway, how do I know the version of xubuntu installed and perhaps if this is not a thing, perhaps some clarification and insight about why it isn't a thing.

Xubuntu says "no that is not your password" and laughs at my sorry attempts to reset it

Hi,

I have an old Toshiba laptop that was set up as a dual boot with Windows 10 and Xubuntu. Once it was set up I only ever used the linux side, and then had let the machine sit for a while (not sure how long. Less than three years). I wanted to see if it would still charge okay, and when I started it up, what I remember my password to be wasn't accepted. (This is all on the Xubuntu side - that's all I want to run.) I went to the askUbuntu website and found instructions but they involved selecting recovery mode during startup, and the recovery mode option doesn't appear for me. There was another set of instructions using the grub prompt, but I got really lost there: it was like most of my keystrokes weren't being processed at all.

Anyone think they can steer me in a better direction, or talk me through this? I'm sure I'll need some ELI5 stuff - I did try to learn my way around linux a while back but it's been a while and I was always on kind of shaky ground anyway.

I also want to mention that I vacuumed the keyboard and sprayed it with compressed air, feeling like it had to be something other than getting the password wrong. This is because the password on my current laptop is the the same as the old one with a very specific adjustment, so I'm unable to imagine that I could be getting it wrong. But then you know what they say about lack of imagination:/

Thanks for your time in even reading this.

update: after many attempts where I thought I was losing my mind because it seemed like the same effort was yielding different results, I realized that the problem actually was my keystrokes not always registering (and not consistently - some keys were grumpy but would work after n tries, n variable). I went back to the login screen and hit each character of my password until it registered, and got in.
