Cannot install XUbuntu 24.04.1

Hi guys! I'm running into issues installing XUbuntu 24.04.1... I have downloaded the ISO file "xubuntu-24.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso" from the official website. When I create the Virtual Machine and run it, I get the error of the image.

I have tried installing a previous XUbuntu version (20.04.6) and it worked fine. Do you have any idea of what could be happening? Thank you!

Every element in the UI looks too small

I have recently installed Xubuntu 22.04 on a brand new Asus Zenbook. However, every single element in the UI looks too small.

I managed to remediate this by increasing font size and the panel icon size in settings, but some things still look too small, such as the default size of windows and menus and the windows tabs when they are minimized.

I read somewhere this is because Xfce still doesn't properly support displays of higher resolution and I would need to use something else like KDE instead. I really like Xubuntu's smaller resource usage though, so if someone knows a workaround for this I would be glad to try it.

How to know xubuntu version?

I am running xubuntu on my pc.

How do I know my version of xubuntu?

Background: I am fairly new to Linux in general. I tried using

lsb_release -a cat /etc/issue

Bith yielded the same results listing mote or less Ubuntu etc....

Now I do know that xubuntu is a distro that is evolved from Ubuntu, or if I am using the term correctly, downstream from it, so I am aware there is a connection, but I am very confused to see Ubuntu listed as a response.

After all when I log on, there is this big bright 'uuge xubuntu logo on my screen.

Anyway, how do I know the version of xubuntu installed and perhaps if this is not a thing, perhaps some clarification and insight about why it isn't a thing.

Xubuntu says "no that is not your password" and laughs at my sorry attempts to reset it

Hi,

I have an old Toshiba laptop that was set up as a dual boot with Windows 10 and Xubuntu. Once it was set up I only ever used the linux side, and then had let the machine sit for a while (not sure how long. Less than three years). I wanted to see if it would still charge okay, and when I started it up, what I remember my password to be wasn't accepted. (This is all on the Xubuntu side - that's all I want to run.) I went to the askUbuntu website and found instructions but they involved selecting recovery mode during startup, and the recovery mode option doesn't appear for me. There was another set of instructions using the grub prompt, but I got really lost there: it was like most of my keystrokes weren't being processed at all.

Anyone think they can steer me in a better direction, or talk me through this? I'm sure I'll need some ELI5 stuff - I did try to learn my way around linux a while back but it's been a while and I was always on kind of shaky ground anyway.

I also want to mention that I vacuumed the keyboard and sprayed it with compressed air, feeling like it had to be something other than getting the password wrong. This is because the password on my current laptop is the the same as the old one with a very specific adjustment, so I'm unable to imagine that I could be getting it wrong. But then you know what they say about lack of imagination:/

Thanks for your time in even reading this.

update: after many attempts where I thought I was losing my mind because it seemed like the same effort was yielding different results, I realized that the problem actually was my keystrokes not always registering (and not consistently - some keys were grumpy but would work after n tries, n variable). I went back to the login screen and hit each character of my password until it registered, and got in.

How to use GUI file browser with SSH server?

I want to use any file browser with server, access only by SSH keys (no username nor password), can't figure out by myself how to do that with Gigolo or Thunar.
How to add path to keys in Gigolo? How to setup network bookmark in Thunar accessible only with SSH keys?
Or there are another way to use any GUI file browser?

Tried to use google, now i got even more confused with sftp, remembering user ID (non existent) and other things about magic.

Edti --> solved: ssh-add /path/to/ssh/key and the Gigolo will work and will open file browser (Thunar)

xubuntu minimal?

What is the benefit of the minimal version?

I went to the office, downloaded the minimal 24.04 on fast internet, size is 2.5G; created USB.
Then I returned home to install, and it still tries to download over 600MB via slow mobile internet. :(

Is using an older version a bad idea?

I’d rather use 20.04.06 for some compatibility reasons. Is it unsafe for me to do?

In my plank dock it's Trash, in the UI it can't decide to be a rubbish bin or a wastebasket. Probably a localization effect (en-gb vs en-us), but it always annoys me to see 2 to 3 different terms for the same thing.

Touchpad disabled while typing

[SOLVED] Hey there, I just installed a copy of xubuntu today, and I've ran into an issue. For some reason the touchpad is disabled when I am typing, yet I can't find a setting for it in the "mouse and touchpad" section. Am I looking in the wrong place?

Unable to boot usually monthly and fsck prints an hour long list of boot sectors on recovery terminal

Usually every month or two. Xubuntu is unable to boot. When I run advanced startup recovery from grub2 and run `fsck /dev/sda2`. It constantly reports errors every time I respond with `y`. Pressing `a` will auto yes for everything onward. Then the screen flashes with countless disk sectors. Usually takes an hour on the check and another hour on the fixing.

It starts up and shutdowns okay each day until a month or two later. And I hadn't seen any files corrupted.

`gnome-disk-utility` reports that the disk is okay. From the report. It's been powered on for near 3 years.

I have a ramdisk setup on boot that I use to reduce writes for temporary files. Also I have Firefox set to store cache in memory instead of disk to help preserve the disk.

Any help would be appreciated.

No “System Sounds” appears under Playback in pavucontrol

I use PipeWire under Xubuntu. Unfortunately, I'm not able to set the system sound volume. Normally, the “Playback” panel of Pavucontrol should show “System Sounds”, but there isn't any in my case. How can I make “System Sounds” re-appear in that panel?

Black screen after startup (dual boot)

Everytime i launch xubuntu my screen turns black and my monitor turns of after receiving no signal. I have also have win11 on the same pc if that's the issue. I have tried to safeboot to install new graphics drivers which didn't work. I have tried repairing the bootloader wich didn't work. I have also tried to reinstall multiple times from different usb's. Is there anything I'm doing wrong? (I am in no way an experienced Linux user. I'm trying to setup xubuntu as my first personal os on Linux without it being a virtual machine or Kali)

Xubuntu install error, could not create MokL

Hi,
The other day I tried to install xubuntu into a computer alongside windows. I always install ubuntu, but it's an old computer, so I tried xubuntu.
I create the usb with rufus and the official xubuntu image. And I create a partition with 30Gb free.
Then I start the computer with the usb, and it starts xubuntu, I see an icon to install xubuntu, and I select to install it alongside windows. Then, I failed in some step, I can't select where and it starts installing it... ok, if it doesn't delete windows or the other storage partition, it's good for me.
When it finish It restart, and I see this message:

istRT: Volume Full could not create MokL
Could not create MokListXRT: Volume Full
Could not create SbatLevelRT: Volume Full
Could not create MokListTrustedRT: Volume Full
Something has gone seriously wrong: import mok_state() failed: Volume Full

I were worried, I start with windows, and it works, ok, my heart starts working again.
I see in the partition that the installation create a new Volume with ubuntu, so, I think it's good (but I don't understand which space do it use)
I tried to start from it, but the same message, I tried to starts from the usb, and the same message...
So I delete the volume created, but the same message.. oh oh
I tried with ubuntu and... the same message
I can't understand why at least the usb doesn't works, it's like the computer doesn't allow any ubuntu-linux distro anymore, even the lives one.
It's an 'asus' computer, intel5, and the bios is very strange, so I cannot try to disable secure boot (if I recall it correctly), a recommendation of chatGPT for the problem.

Now, with more time to investigate, I think I need human help. So, Any clue?
And, no, it's not possible to remove windows, It's necesary because it has programs that are needed.

Mouse cursor disappears and keyboard input fails after starting xfce4-session.

I have a VirtualBox VM running xubuntu. Recently, shortly after I start it up, the mouse cursor disappears and it stops responding to keyboard input. It's getting through my .xsession OK, so I'm not sure where the failure is. I can ssh into the VM without problems, but cannot start X applications that way.

I would welcome any suggestions about how to diagnose and/or fix this.

The problems began after I changed the number of displays attached to the VM from 4 to 1, and played around with arandr a bit. I don't know whether that's related.

Below is my .xsession-errors, in case it's helpful:

Slower Boot after Upgrade to 24.04?

I upgraded my Lenovo T530 to 24.04. I did not do any mearuring but afterwards it seems it takes longer from entering the LUKS password to presenting the login screen. Did anybody of you observe something similar?

A few specs if it helps: Intel i5-3210M, 4 cores, disk is an SSD with plenty of space, 16GB main mem, /boot as ext4, rest of the disk LUKS container with swap and a btrfs volume. Nothing of that changed during the upgrade.

Is xubutnu good for a beginner starting a home lab?

For context, I have done my CS bachelors and starting a job as a data scientist. Lately, networking and low level programming are in my mind and I'm trying to upskill in it. I'm thinking of using an old laptop into a server as well as learn Linux. Is xubutnu a good choice? My pc specs are: i3 6th gen 12 gb ddr4 512gb ssd

I want to use it to host media server, maybe using Plex, a few docker containers as well as do some programming. So, is it a good option? If not, any other advice/recommendation i can get?

are the images on the site updated, or always the same from the beginning?

Hello, I tried Xubuntu 24.04 right when it was released, but it crashed on standard VirtualBox setup: are the images updated (daily, weekly) or do I have to wait for 24.04.1 for the new image?
(was on Xubuntu, tried Mint, but I have issues, might want to hop to 24.04)

Macbook Pro late 2013, Xubuntu and Scaling

I recently installed XUbuntu on a Macbook Pro late 2013 (Intel Core i7-4850HQ @ 2.30GHz). Since I could hardly see anything on the desktop after installation, I scaled to 2x. Now I'm wondering how much CPU/GPU performance the scaling needs and whether there are better alternatives.

The Macbook fan starts blowing more often when working than under MacOS.

Otherwise there haven't been any major problems so far, only Enpass has such small fonts that you can hardly see anything and according to Perplexity there isn't that much you can do about it. I set the QT scaling in .profile as I was advised, but that didn't really do anything.
