I know so much of WNC is still healing and will be for quite some time. I’m curious if there is a complete list of forest roads that are open or closed? I’ve tried the forest service and individual ranger districts but can’t seem to find anything other than a handful of roads/trials. Specifically looking for FS228. Thanks!
Considering taking a job there and living there, Morganton, or Hickory. We have a 4 year old and want to share the beauty of WNC with him. Anyone live in the area and can offer some advice?
I’m in Winston Salem and I have family in town and we were wondering if Boone is open for a day trip. There’s a billboard in WS that’s advertising Boone but if it’s not the time to visit we’ll find something else to do.

A friend of mine just yesterday gave me a ton of stuff that was donated for WNC because I'm traveling through WNC from statesville to the Murphy area today. Are there any donation centers in smaller towns that need things like shelf stable food, bottled water, self care/hygiene products, etc? I know Asheville has basically been a hub for everything in and out of WNC and figured since I'll have the time and resources, I may as well make the detour (my drive is basically following 40 all the way until the last hour or so before the TN border).
Also, my flair is clay county since that's around abouts where my destination is.
Has anyone heard anything from any of the WNC small business grants?
Does anyone know how it faired the storm?
I’m a student ambassador for Somethings - a state-endorsed, free mental health service for teens exclusively in North Carolina. We connect teens with trained young adult peer specialists who can provide guidance, empathy, and support during tough times.
I'm trying to as many parents and teens who might benefit from additional support as possible especially in the wake of Hurricane Helene, especially those navigating challenges like anxiety, depression, etc. Here's where we're mentioned on the NCDHHS site (check the second slide of the carousel), and additionally here's our website outlining our partnerships with the state: www.somethings.com/northcarolina
Please feel free to DM me if you have any questions or you can sign your teen up at our site of interested!
Hey y’all I don’t know if you’re aware of what our supermajority in the NCGOP is doing right now but we need your help!
They held a secret session to prop up SB 382. It’s labeled as a Hurricane Relief plan but only 13 pages out of the 131 page bill actually pertains to relief the rest is gutting the power tot our our elected officials who will come into office next year.
There is a rainbow though:
Three Republicans who, just happened to be from WNC, voted NO - showing leadership for their constituents Their issues with the bill were:
➡️ So much packed into one bill with so little time to review it. ➡️Not enough relief funds for Western North Carolina.
Now, we need to encourage them to stand firm and vote NO on the veto override!

Im an artist in the arts district, I tragically lost this painting in the flood. Looking at those mountains as the sun rises and sets, Im reminded that it will always be so breathtakingly beautiful here. That's something i hold close. Im a little scared about making ends meet till the tourists come back, but Im so incredibly thankful for how much the community has shown up to support us. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart! Hope you enjoy my sunset painting!
Hello everybody! Hope y'all are all doing what you can to remain sane. Overjoyed to hear the news about the water! I am hoping some of y'all have leads or can put me in contact with folks who have work along the lines of sustainable development and rebuilding WNC. I've lived in and out of the region for many years and generally work in the field of environmental management and policy. As WNC rebuilds, I want to play a role ensuring we rebuild with resiliency in mind and take the opportunity to better our communities in other ways too.
I've looked at various job boards online and either there isn't a whole lot being posted or it's all word-of-mouth. I most recently lived in West Asheville and worked around Biltmore Village. I'd love to work for or with a city government or a non-profit. Feel free to DM or respond in the comments.

Hey all -
I live in Charlotte, and my family go to different areas in the mountains to cut down a Christmas tree each year. We were going to do WV (and hopefully skiing) this year, but feel a moral obligation to go to Asheville/WNC somewhere, given the (assumed) scant visitation the area has received this season.
Usually we take Thanksgiving Day weekend, spend a day hiking and then going to some neat area (past years have been Linville Falls cave, or swinging bridge, stuff like that), cut the tree the next day before heading home.
To my questions:
Haven’t been since I was a kid, and now I’d like to take my 4 year old snow tubing. Which one would be recommended this year?
