Rules - Wiki

  1. Be nice. Do not insult others, use derogatory terms, or resort to ad hominem arguments.
  2. Do not downvote. As this is a debate forum, we ask that you join the conversation, and not attempt to bury a point you don't like. If a post breaks the rules, please report it.
  3. Repost with moderation. We will remove posts that are duplicated in quick succession. We do not allow very similar posts on the same day, or an individual posting very similar posts every couple of days repeatedly. However, revisiting topics every once in a while is allowed.
  4. Do not make new posts more than 5 times a day.
  5. When making a claim about a character, be able to provide the source of that claim. A source can include the work of media that claim comes from, and the chapter, page, scene, ETC where it occurred. Refusal to provide details is considered posting in bad faith and can result in a warning or temporary ban.
  6. Do not post meta-topics without mod approval, except on "Meta Monday" when we open posts to general meta conversation. Meta-topics include conversation topics, tournaments, events, or other non-conventional posts. This rule will only be enforced Tuesday through Sunday.
  7. Do not use disruptive or gimmick accounts. Accounts posting with a gimmick or agenda in mind will be banned.
  8. Posts may not be overly broad. A post must identify at least one specific combatant and must include all combatants in the title. A post may not include "...in all of fiction" or "...in all of history."
  9. Posts must include sufficient details about the characters, the situation and the win conditions. Posts with low effort descriptions will be removed.
  10. Do not use disallowed combatants and modifiers. Topics not allowed in posts include "you vs...", "your favorite character vs...", "a specific subreddit or online community vs..." or "character with a [color] lantern ring vs..."
  11. Posts and comments may not be deliberately distasteful, edgy, intended to bait drama, directly insulting, or clearly written to evoke shock value.
  12. Posts and comments may not push a specific political agenda. Posts involving any real-life political figure will be removed.
  13. Posts and comments may not simply be jokes, memes, circlejerk or copy-pasta topics. Posts that are funny are allowed, so long as they are also a topic that can effectively be discussed.
  14. Posts and comments that target a group of people (including but not limited to race, sex, gender identity, religion, political affiliation) are considered abuse and will be removed and the poster may be banned.
  15. Comments must add to the conversation. Short comments like "Goku stomps," or a single image as a non-responsive reply will be removed.

Additional Guidelines:

  1. Include detail when posting. Try outlining arenas, special conditions, multiple rounds and specifying the universe/version of characters if you're looking for a good discussion. Again, please see the suggested template above for more details.

  2. Admit when you don't know. No one expects you to be a genius when it comes to every aspect of every character. Always admit it up front if you're unfamiliar with a character.

The penalty for breaking the rules of this sub, contributing to spam, trolling, or purposefully making things more difficult for the mods may include being banned. We issue warnings if we believe the user means well but we are not obligated to do so. You can be banned for a first offense. Report rule breaking and leave rule enforcement to the mods

Remember, the mods are humans, and we realize you're human, too. Be nice and we'll respond in kind. Apologies go a long way if you mess up.

[star trek enterprise] What ship would you need to destroy the xindi sphere?

We saw in enterprise show the xindi sphere weapon is essentially the death star it can destroy a whole planet by itself. it's faster than anything Starfleet has.

The nx-01 was totally outmatched. What Starfleet ship from what century would you need to be able to destroy the xindi sphere by itself?

Like the Enterprise -J from the 26th century?

What do you think?

Who would win: The Swarm (Michael Critchon’s Prey) vs. Dinosaurs (Jurassic Park franchise)

Prey is a 2002 sci-fi thriller novel by Michael Crichton. In the story, the Xymos Corporation has built a state-of-the-art fabrication plant, surrounded by miles and miles of nothing but cactus and coyotes. Eight people are trapped. A self-replicating swarm of predatory molecules is rapidly evolving outside the plant. Massed together, the molecules form an intelligent organism that is anything but benign. More powerful by the hour, it has targeted the eight scientists as prey. They must stop the swarm before it is too late…

The novel describes the nanoparticle swarm as being “programmed as a predator” and humanity in the novel is the prey. (Source: https://www.michaelcrichton.com/works/prey/).

The swarm "evolve" from animalistic hunter-killers with one simple goal (survive) and are fooled like most intelligent but non-sapient animals to ultra-intelligent evil geniuses hellbent on world domination, hijacking several human hosts and rewiring their brains to serve - willingly or otherwise - the swarm's goals.

The nano-robots suffocate the victims by pouring in waves into every orifice until the victim suffocates, then they dissolve the bodies slowly into grey goo. When the swarms are removed, their victims are described as looking like they are dying from cancer, cadaverous, with brittle white hair, emaciated bodies, and translucent skin.

Regarding how the swarms were made, the construction process for the swarms involves E. coli bacteria (the techs wanted a thoroughly-documented bacterium to work with). The "wild" swarms therefore hunt down and kill animals in order to feed the bacteria within them as part of their reproductive process. A few swarms learn how to "benignly" invade a human body to use as a host and survive.

Crichton also wrote Jurassic Park, a sci-fi novel that became a movie in 1993 and spawned a franchise. The novel and movie revolve around a theme park that contains genetically engineered dinosaurs. The sequel, The Lost World (which was also made into a movie in 1997), sees Ian Malcolm, one of the main characters from the first book, going to Isla Sorna, another island where the dinosaurs were made, to rescue a friend, only to end up in a battle for survival.

For this battle, we will use the novel incarnations of both Isla Nublar and “Site B” on Isla Sorna.

Let us imagine that a gang of criminals learns of Jurassic Park’s existence and steals the nano-swarm, intending to weaponize it against John Hammond and shut his park down.

The swarm is released onto both Isla Sorna and Isla Nublar a couple hours before Dennis Nedry launches his plot to shut down the park’s security and steal the dinosaur embryos. Assume the human characters are still doing the Jurassic Park tour.

The human characters from the Jurassic Park novel now must fight to survive against hostile nano-robots in addition to the dinosaurs.

How long can the human characters from Jurassic Park survive? Can they escape the island without getting infected? How quickly can the nano-robots kill all the dinosaurs on both islands?

In 1492 Christopher Colombus discovers the new world. However alongside the various human civilizations he also encounters creatures of fantasy. Assuming that historical rivalries remain the same can Europe colonise the new world.

The fantasy races live all over North and South America and have their own diverse cultures depending on region. Thease races are

Orks Human level life spans and intelligence Pocess Mezoamerican tech levels Twice as strong as your average man Have tough skin and thick muscles making them difficult to harm

Elves Extremely long life spans High medieval tech level Human level intelligence Fragile bodies with easily broken bones Can cast illusions and call upon spirits of the forest Vulnerable to fire

Centaurs Half man have horse Seemingly lack much self control but have Human level intelligence Mezoamerican tech levels.

Dwarfs

Growing no taller than 5ft. They are short and stocky. Deeply isolationist While on par with the Europeans in military tech they greatly outstrip them in city building

Which movie, game or song has the longest "play streak"?

By "play streak" I'm referring to the idea that at least someone, somewhere has been playing it, and before that person was done with it, at least someone else started doing it instead, thus "taking over" the streak.

For example, when Star Wars first was released on VHS a few decades ago, and enough people purchased it, it's highly likely that at least one person has been watching Star Wars at any given point since then.

Or, since the time of its official launch, Minecraft has almost certainly been played by at least one person at any given point (but being a new game, that's of course not too long anyway).

Or, when Elvis Presley released some of his most popular songs, at least someone, somewhere has probably been playing them on their music player device.

But again, which movie, game or song has the longest streak?
