Whether you're living here, moving here or are just curious, feel free to browse around and ask questions.
Please have a look at our very basic rules.
Also please check out our wiki for some great info!
We were selected as subreddit of the day in May, 2017. Yay!
Here's a post explaining "what are meetups like?"
We meet up all the time as a group. Cinema trips, camping, picnics, meals out, nights out in bars, bowling, laserforce. On average we meet up about twice a week!
If you want to just attend a meetup, replying in the meetup thread to say you'll be there is plenty.
Here's a link to our meetup wiki page, with details on how to host. Please contact the mods if it's your first time hosting!

Some dirt bag stole my newish ebike from Petone (Seaview end) last night. This is my main form of transport.
The battery was only half full and I have the charger. It's pretty useless without power as it weighs quiet a bit.
I'd imagine they'd either dump it or try flogging it. I've logged a police report but if anyone sees it I'd appreciate a heads up.
It's fairly unique, olive green and not many were sold in Wellington. Cheers
Looking for...
If anyone knows where they can be purchased from please let me know.
Thanks!
Hi Welly! Does anyone know of any meetups or social gatherings for young public sector professionals (in 20s) to chat about career advancement, navigating the bloodbath at the moment, or networking opportunities in general?
PLEASE READ! TW: Genocide I’m sure most of you know what’s happening in Gaza. Recently I was reading up on the divestment protest the American uni kids started in Columbia. I started thinking about what kiwi companies invest or have links to Israel. The first thing that popped up was about KiwiSaver. According to the information I’ve gathered (feel free to do your research) a lot of banks and investment companies in nz invest OUR money on weapons manufacturing, banks of Israel and so on. I then came across this website-https://mindfulmoney.nz which helps you check if your KiwiSaver is linked to the war in any way or not. This website/company is a charity and they held a meeting and made our KiwiSaver providers aware but seems like no one has divested excepted one- Simplicity.
Look I don’t want my money tainted with blood, I don’t want my money to be used to manufacture weapons and I thought maybe you guys would want to know this. I know we are quite sheltered and we have always tried to be on the right side of history but please don’t let Winston Peters speech in UN couple of weeks ago be our only contribution to this current situation. I want everyone to make sound financial decisions but I truly believe that together if we email/ call our providers and let them know that either they divest from Israel or we go switch providers I’m sure they will have no choice but to listen to us. I don’t want my hard earned money tainted with blood of Palestinian people. Here’s the link to educate yourself -https://mindfulmoney.nz/learn/towards-peace-in-palestine-ensuring-your-money-isnt-fuelling-the-cycle-of-violence/
Im thinking about coming in from Upper Hutt to see the lights tonight. Where’s the best spot? Down by Red Rocks? And is it clear atm? It’s pretty cloudy out here in the Hutt.
Update: well we came in to head to the south coast but while we saw stars we didn’t see much colour. Ah well.
Hi all, might be a bit of a stretch but looking for any and all recommendations for professionals who have an understanding, or consideration of chronic illnesses & health anxiety in welly.
thanks in advance :)
I've set up a new section of my blog to support people into growing their own veg. Basic instructions. Weekly check ins. Comment section for trouble shooting.
It has a free section and a paid section. This cycle, the free section is on growing broad beans and the paid is for garlic.
But don't let broad beans put you off- for one, they are easy and rewarding, for another the crop itself will help to improve your soil, so it's a good trial run. I also used to hate broad beans so I'll include some recipes.
You can also do this just in pots- you don't need a garden bed- I too am a renter!
(I am not new to Reddit, I just finally got a work account to stop doxxing myself, haha!)
I'm getting rather sick of my neighbours and their friends parking on the berm outside my house. They've wrecked the grass, and who knows what damage has been done to the infrastructure underneath. They never do this outside their own house, no, only mine and others in the street.
My question is, is it ok to put some medium to large sized rocks on the berm to help deter this? Maybe will rip up some bumpers on their pieces of shit cars in the process? Or will I get done for damage while they park illegally and are too stupid to notice the rocks?
While I'm at it, I'd like to paint some yellow lines across my driveway to indicate it isn't cool to (partially) block driveways. Maybe then I can actually get a towie to come round, because they sure as shit wont do it as it stands now
I missed the aurora last night. Will there be one tonight?
Hi friends,
I'm an amateur astrophotographer and quite enjoy chasing things in the night sky in the darkest areas of Wellington. Quite a few of you probably went out last night to spot the aurora gracing Wellington's skies - around 630PM it was visible from the northern suburbs with the naked eye - no camera required! It's really rare for conditions like this to happen.
The thing with aurora is that at latitudes this far north, they're mostly invisible to the naked eye because the light is emitted in the infrared, which the human eye has great difficulty detecting. Nights like last night are rare, because there's enough infrared light in the atmosphere for your eye to detect it. One really good way to view aurora is through a DSLR camera's sensor. This is why all the photos you see in the news coverage do not look like what you see with your own two eyes. Not only is the sensor more sensitive to infrared than the eye, it can also be held open indefinitely in a very dark area for a long length of time to "gather" all that light and paint an image on the sensor. But this is also a curse - if any unexpected light appears in the camera's view during this time, the whole shot is ruined and you need to start again.
Photographers and stargazers alike need the absolute darkest skies to have the best chance of viewing what they came to see. Excess light actually makes it impossible to see the aurora at all, and even the briefest flash of light will ruin an exposure. I'm not saying you need to park up or drive off with your headlamps off, but if you're sitting in your vehicle on the south coast with your lights pointed out to sea... why? Maybe you can back into that spot instead.
Update: likelihood of seeing an aurora tonight: https://earth.nullschool.net/#current/space/surface/level/anim=off/overlay=aurora/orthographic=-188.31,-18.67,371
Anyone care to explain to me how a scuffed up, 2nd hand pair of boots should go for this price in a savemart? I'm by no means saying that they wouldn't be worth this amount but isn't savemart supposed to be a place for affordable, 2nd hand clothing? I can't quite understand how a store like savemart has become so expensive..

Gah. Cant work out how to just paste the image. Promise it’s a safe link to google photos. the picture
Just FYI for those interested. Happening right now.
Movie’s name is SanFran. Short for San Francisco I think. Because there are cars parked with California nameplates.
Hope you've all had a great day so far. Including the Trying to be mum's, step mums and pet mums.
What film is it?
I ordered AA batteries from countdown (2x 18 packs) and they were out. But instead of refunding me they substituted them for AAA batteries..... like how dumb can you fucking be 😂😂😂
There are some things you dont substitute ffs
Any craft stores with a large selection around the Wellington area? I'm willing to drive. I went to Gordon Harris and it was ok, but I'm looking for silicone mold making & resin crafting supplies especially. Cheers.
A friend tried to post, but mods seemed to take it down for some reason. Anyone with experience here with this ECE they would appreciate the good, bad, and noteworthy.
Thanks
If so please share your best spot success/failure,thanks :)

At around 6pm. Could hardly see much with the naked eye though.
Totally forgot it was landing tonight and just realised 2 hours after everyone starting posting all their beautiful pics :(
Also there are no parks and about 300 people staring into the mist
Hi everyone! I've recently made the decision to learn a small instrument like harmonica. I'm looking for recommendations on where to buy one in Wellington or elsewhere in New Zealand. Anyone know some reliable local/online retailers?
Also, if you have any personal favourites or tips, I'd love to hear it. Thanks in advance!
