WDTV is media player that allows people to use apps like Hulu, YouTube, Pandora, and many more to watch video, listen to music, and view photo's on your television. Because it has USB ports it is also able to natively play local content (without an Internet connection), unlike many other media devices like the Roku & ChromeCast. If you are a cordcutter in need of a device that is well rounded and is upgradeable, this is it. Join our community to discuss this wonderful product!

TMDB support tends to go on and off from time to time as TMDB changes data locations, etc. but usually it gets fixed up for legacy devices. I sent an email to TMDB and hopefully they can add back a "legacy hook" for devices like the WDTV, as they always did before.
If not, then the end approaches...
I dragged out the old WDTV Live Hub to use in the basement weight room (it's the perfect size), but after upgrading the HD to 2TB and installing it on the TV, I suddenly remembered it was wired network only - what a crazy design choice that was.
It's a shot in the dark, but I'm hoping someone knows of a currently-available USB Wifi adapter that is compatible with this unit. I need some kind of wireless to transfer new movies over, as using external USB drives is impossible since my last Win 7 laptop bit the dust. Win 10/11 drives are incompatible.
Thanks.
I feel like this group is fully dead but is there a way to get youtube working? Every time i start youtube, the wdtv either freezes or force restarts itself. Is there any fix or a reason for this?
I own a wdtv live box (i think 3rd gen) and i'm thinking of modding it, i've seen some posts about debian linux on wdtv live box and i wanted to try to do this myself because i don't have any other use than shoutcast, music and movies for my wdtv.. can someone help me on this? i haven't found any clear guide on how to do this
As of mid October 2023 I get a notification that Netflix is no longer supporting this device. I guess it was optimistic that I could use this tv box forever but it's the one streaming service that continued to work and work well. YouTube long since gone, YT kids is a bit hit and miss, screen mirroring too.
Hi I was looking for an alternative to my WD tv. expecialy for the codec h265 but I love the thing it used to research the cover and a little plot of the movie that I have in my database. does anyone know any good alternative with this functions?
Greetings and Salutations,
I have a bit of a dilemma. I currently have 2 WDTV Live Hubs with internal 1TB storage drives to play my local media on my TV. I AM NOT STREAMING. The purpose of these drives was to be able to upload my digital content and play on a TV in my camper at the lake with no internet access on cold rainy days.
The issue I have, is Windows no longer supports the file explorer method for connecting to my boxes and I struggle to upload media to the internal storage. My short term work around has been to use a USB stick or drive and have WD catalog the media in order to play it.
I am looking for a decent alternative for offline media storage and playback that works with or talks to Windows 11. Any suggestions would be helpful. From my research so far, I have deduced that most people will suggest some form of cheap media player with an external hd, or building a RaspberryPI unit. I am no opposed to using external drives if there is a suitable player that is reliable and can do what I need it to do.
Thank you
I've just dusted off my WD TV Live Plus after 4 years in storage. I downloaded the last firmware and extracted the 3 files to root directory of thumb drive. When I power up, I'm not seeing the icon to perform the firmware update. Any advice would be appreciated. The thumb drive is FAT32 format. (I tried both USB ports but I assume either is usable for this)
Does anyone want this thing? I don’t have the remote for it. I’m happy to ship it to you for the price of shipping alone. I just don’t want to throw it away.
Best options? I need to place it in an enclosed cabinet.
About two weeks ago I noticed that the Rotten Tomato scores no longer appear in the Video UI. Has anyone else had this issue. I live in So Cal, USA if that helps any. I would really like to figure this out.
Thanks for any assistance.

I am in the GTA and I have noticed overtime some local radio stations (or nation wide for that matter) no longer work, I get an error. I think most of them are with the Iheart radio network or Corus. Does it have anything to do with how the stations are transmitted and WDTV no longer supports it? Anyone have this issue?
I have a Roku in another room and I have no issues with Itune radio.
Hi there WD-TV users! The simplest way to stop the continuous reboot loop is to go to Reset and choose the option Reset All Online Service Accounts. This includes the culprit Accuweather. I also had to stop the WD-TV from connecting to the internet before I could do this but after this reset it can safely be reconnected to the internet.
In Canada here. This weekend I went to send a few files over to my WDTV Live which has been relegated to a simple NAS because I've moved over mostly to x265 files. More compact and great quality. This machine can't play them, only x264, which it has done amicably for several years.
Back to the story - I went to send some files over. It wasn't appearing on the network. Scratching my head, and infuriated, I reset the network, the computers, the TVs, the WD Live Hub.
Assuming the hard drive failed, I pulled it out, cleaned the inside of the WD device, tested the drive in my PC - and it worked fine. No problems. Thinking it might be overheating, I made sure everything was cooled down. Still happening.
I find it crazy that I come to Reddit, and it's something as stupid as a server that is now been shut down. Anybody figure out a workaround? I can't change the DNS to 0.0.0.0 ... It says it's invalid.
When I Blacklist it on my router - It disappears from everything and I can't use it anyway...
Any thoughts?
Same happened to me a few days ago. Switched it on in the evening to watch a movie off my NAS and the WDTV whited on me infinite reboot... I uttered an expression of discontent laced with a few profanities.
Too tired to do anything so switched to an alternative since my NAS is setup to deliver DNLA and my LG TV too I could watch the movie without the WDTV BUT the LG interface leaves something to be desired.
So the backup WDTV came into play (bought it for touring France and Belgium with the addition of a portable 1TB hard drive).
Connected the backup WDTV into my system and it booted up normally and I could access the usual stuff off my NAS.
Great until ... da da daaaaa.... it was set up exactly like my 'duff' WDTV with the exception of Accuweather since I never even considered it as the box was only going to be at a specific location for 1 or 2 nights at most. Then I did the Accuweather thing selected my location etc and it rebooted and rebooted .... SOB.
Plugged in my 'duff' box. Without the LAN and my supposedly duff box came back to life Woo Hoo! Selected Factory reset. Rebooted fine. Plugged LAN back in and rebooted OK. went through the normal setup routine and was able to see and view all my NAS vids as per normal. Pheww.
Did the same with my newly duffed backup box and Voila! It too functions once more. I can only assume that Accuweather had decided at the end of January to discontinue requests from WDTV boxes or that someone there made an almighty boo boo.
In hindsight having unplugged the LAN and got back into the WDTV menu perhaps I should just have selected the option to 'disable all services'.
SETUP/DEVICE RESET
I selected the 1st option: Reset All Settings Back to Factory Default
perhaps I should have just selected the
3rd Option: Reset All Online Service Accounts
So the advice at the top of this post is confirmed by me as to be correct. :)
DEAR PEOPLE FROM THE FUTURE: Here's what we've figured out so far...
The other night I turned my WDTV Live on and saw it was rebooting, and then it rebooted again and again. It seemed to reboot when it said "Connecting network," and so I unplugged the ethernet cable and it came up. I changed the network connection from wired to wireless, and it rebooted itself and ended up back in the loop. Since it's set for wireless network now and it doesn't boot up enough to change it, it's effectively bricked right now.
Another foible of this WDTV box is that the clock is wrong. Not just the wrong time zone, but like way wrong, something like 13 hours and 7 minutes wrong. I discovered there's no way to set the clock. So I chalked this up to that the box was starting to fail.
But here's the strange thing. I have two WDTV Lives. I just turned on the TV in the living room and while the LED on the WDTV was on, the TV said No Signal. So I unplugged it, it booted, got to "Connecting Network," and wouldn't you know it, it rebooted. I was able to get in only by unplugging the cable. I went into Setup, changed "Auto-discover new firmware" (not that there is any) to No, plugged in the cable, and it rebooted.
So this isn't just one box failing. I have two WDTV Live boxes and they both started showing this reboot-loop behavior at the same time. I tried Dr. Google for some answers but found nothing conclusive. Some suggested factory resets; some said it just made things worse.
Has anyone else's WDTV flipped out over the past two days?

Hi,
I made a complete reset of my wd tv device. I open it and I enter my email adress and password. After it check my connection and the screen becomes black.
What can I do?
Thanks for the information.
hey everyone, happy easter weekend.
so a friend just gave me his old WDTV Live. as far as he knew, it was still functioning, but now it turns on but no video comes out of the HDMI (it was set on hdmi). since WDTVs seem to last very long, i'm assuming it still works and maybe just a bug affecting it.
since i'm a nerd, and i want another functioning WDTV, im messing around with it and looking into what's wrong.
apparently one of the bugs affects the AUTO HDMI setting...and to fix it requires you to connect via Composite and manually set the HDMI https://community.wd.com/t/what-will-reset-button-do/62668/2
i found an old mini to RCA cable but i cannot seem to get any image on 2 TVs that accept composite. any idea how to force the WDTV to output video via Composite instead of the hdmi it was set on?
p.s. i'm tempted to use the RESET button on the bottom but that's what nerfed my original WDTV to be unusable on any network. i don't know which firmware version this was on so i don't want to chance it
thank you!
Hi!
Anyone know of a working wifi adaptor (2020, 2021) for WDTV Live?
TIA!
I’ve been using these to together for years now without any problems until last night when I had to reinstall Tversity Pro. After installation I went into the WDTV and Tversity media server didn’t appear, no matter what I tried. Does anyone have suggestions?
Recently I reorganized my TV and movie setup. I unplugged the hard drive to plug it into the back of the WDTV unit. When I restarted it woudl not recognize the hard drive until I redid a factory reset of the WDTV live. All good at this point.
The problem is now every time I load a movie onto the hard drive over my network or turn the WDTV off then on it resets the sorting. I have it set to sort A to Z but now when I load a movie or turn it off it goes Z-A.
How do I make it stay A-Z
Got an old WD TV Media Player (original) that has outlived its usefulness where it is (replaced by a smart TV). Moving it to another area to work with a NON-smart tv. I have a collection of movies in both old codecs like the old AVI containers as well as some newer HEVC 265 codecs that don't seem to be compatible with the original WD TV Media Player.

I have the WDTV Live plus as my movie box. I can access it anywhere in my house so its not going anywhere.
Currently I have a 2 TB drive hooked up to it.
I am looking to get a larger one. Whats the size limit it can work with?
