VPN on Android

I'm from the UK, currently in Germany. I downloaded a VPN yesterday and took the 7 day free trial. I am connected to London, but I still cannot watch anything that is location restricted. Any ideas?

How often should I change location?

I understand having the vpn set to certain regions affects different online activity in different ways. However I wonder if there is a recommended frequency of changing the IP for maximum security. Hope my question makes sense.

Paid VPN service, Synology NAS Pi-hole, Work VPN? How to get this to work?

I'm fairly new to all this. I've read terms like Merlin, DHCP Pi-hole, etc... but am really lost. There seem to be a lot of options and I'm not sure what to do.

In my household we currently have a paid VPN provider with a northerly name installed on selected devices where masking or relocating our IPs makes sense for certain activities. We also run browser extension such as Adblock and uBlock Origin on our Microsoft devices.

I'm struggling with managing unwanted ads and other stuff on other devices and plan to install Pi-hole on a Synology NAS I just ordered to enable some ad blocking by default on all devices connected to my Wifi network.

However, I've read that using a VPN from a device directly, will circumvents whatever is installed on the NAS and that the solution to this is to install the VPN service at the router level and configure it and Pi-hole to play nicely with each other. Is this correct?

Finally, for work I'd like to have an option to connect to my employers VPN directly through my 'raw' unfiltered ISP connection to avoid any potential issues.

For this to work, what options do I have?

  • A second router connected to the one provided by my ISP where I set up a WiFi network for private devices with Pi-hole and the VPN and leave the ISP router as is?
    • Safe, because if I mess it up, I can always switch networks?
    • Allows me to switch to this network with my devices when I want to use the VPN app from my device (for quick IP relocation when needed)
  • A fancier router with selective device specific VPN capabilities?
  • Other?

Opinions on “no-registration” VPNs

I recently stumbled upon some websites that have OpenVPN configs open to download, without requiring any kind of registration.

I'm planning on using it as TOR over VPN, so, the VPN will only see the TOR exit node and the website, not my IP. I am forced to do this because the website I'm visiting blocks TOR connections.

What do you guys think about the privacy implications? How secure is it?

How to VPN with a cable modem without portforwarding + atttached dsl firefox router?

Hello VPN Communtiy.

I have a litte problem and dont know what to do.

I have a cabe-modem because of no DSL availability. Only Cabel to Internet. But my provider gave me shitty modem. It doesnt have portforwarding. Only IPv6 Host Exposure.

So i bought a firefox router and at tached it to my modem. I enter the Internet through my firefox router. My router sees the network of my modem as the WAN entry point.

I need to use a IPv6.

My modem doesnt support DynDNS. If I set the VPN through my Router up - it doesnt work BECAUSE the public IP it wants to use - is a modem network IP. My Router IP-range and Modem IP-range are different. 2 different networks.

My Modem is my bridge to my router if Im not wrong.

Do I maybe need a better Cable-Router?

My Problem:

I want do use a docker VPN to enter my homenetwork/selfhostet services. How do I need to modify my docker compose file?

Unlimited sticky IP charged by Data USAGE

Hey,

I need unlimited (50) sticky ips, essentially giving me the ip so i can use a browser to act as a unique session for the entire session (less than 1 hour). I need very little data so would like to go down data usage route so i pay as little as possible. Any good services out there?

Work turn on location services by passing wireguard IP

My work just installed location services on Windows. I have a wire guard serve at home and my IP address is showing my home address. But my internal clock on my computer is showing my time zone.

The location services is bypassing my wireguard IP address.

Any tips of how to fix this?

Does a multiplayer game use my VPN IP when I boot it up via PC Gamepass through Xbox app?

As title states. Playing the new CoD right now and using a VPN in Brazil. Wondering if CoD searches for games with the Brazilian location. I’ve been playing all day with it on and get some lag spikes here and there but nothing too crazy, I assume my VPN is working haha.

Thanks

When using split tunneling, does other traffic from a client go through the VPN without the service?

Hello, good afternoon. I am kind of a noob on VPNs, have searched but don't understand the terminology about split tunneling. They just mention that the selected activity goes through the VPN and the other goes directly to the Internet, but how does the other activity travel? Directly from the Client or through the Router without using the VPN? Hopefully, some can explain why I am having a hard time understanding.

If I am making a router a VPN to access some local computers from an iPhone on the go. If I understand this correctly, if I just set up just the VPN all the internet activity I do from the iPhone would go first through the VPN, so I need to use split tunneling to be able to just access the services/computers I need from my home network. My confusion arises from how the iPhone or client would access the rest of the internet activity, will it go through the router with VPN without using the VPN, so basically also slowing down the other internet activities because it has to go through that router too, or will the iPhone/client access the internet directly with the other activities? If the access to the other activities has to go through the home router, do I need to configure something on the client/iPhone side so they don't have to go through the home router? Is it even possible to do all this on iPhone/iOS?

Real location known on some websites webrtc disabled, vpn, killswitch, never been on real ip and mor

I noticed a few months ago signing in to some places with 2 factor I got location notices(signed in from) with my real location or atleast what it should be assuming my real ip is exposed, to be clear here I have NOT seen my address nor my current city HOWEVER the location it IS showing is what the IP of my internet source should say suggesting a ip leak but that is seemingly impossible(Im aware NOTHING is hack proof so to speak and I believe this can be used here, but I have blocked all the ways I know leaks can happen and stay informed on compsec news) and I cannt figure out how this is happening another strange thing is this is recent with no recent changes to my configurations, it used to show the location that my vpn was, I have also been kicked more than once and my accounts locked for new locations inc the ones that are showing my real location suggesting Im getting flagged for signing in from changing locations that dont match a pattern which makes this even more perplexing

Multiple leaks tests for ip, browser fingerprinting and dns all show what they should
Webrtc disabled
Phone number is from a different state
I have a vpn on a hardware firewall with a kill switch using open vpn before my network right behind my internet source(any and all internet related fuctions are thus behind a vpn at all times and if my vpn disconnects for any reason my internet across my network goes out its not dependant on software its tied into my firewall itself if the vpn disconnects my firewall blocks ALL internet traffic on ALL interfaces in both directions) , I have never used this computer nor my network without a vpn, ever, I mean I have in the past but I have moved years ago and its showing my CURRENT location
I live in the middle of nowhere not using a local isp beyond cell tower triagluation there is no way to ID my location regardless of method used aka wifi, bluetooth, isp location, etc Im far enough away that even IF anyone around here had wifi unless they had professional extenders it wouldnt even reach my property line much less my house
I have multiple social media and tracking disabling protections applied this includes cdn blockers/redictors. browser fingerprint blockers/fakers(ex, font, canvas, user agent all fake and rotating), redirect scrubbers and blocking
Im using a device without gps on windows 7 so no new windows spy crap(win7 telemetry removed completely with a auto run script to automatically delete a list of updates related to this, also all troubleshooting and diagnostics that phones home so to speak disabled)
Device clean I run regular av and malware scans and have process hacker and keep a eye on any suspicious processes
While I do visit sites that lets just say are more likely to host things like malicious scripts I have a script blocker and have it set to stop any suspicious scripts, I NEVER download executable and run them without scanning them, if they are suspicious/questionable I sandbox them
Other attack vectors like media players as I use my laptop as a htpc are blocked from internet access and I block them at my firewall from even accessing the internet, also beyond chrome all apps I use are up to date unless new updates add trackers/adds then I use the last version prior
I have a consumer grade IDS and beyond my torrenting there are NO incoming connections and all outgoing are legit
I aggressively block ads and trackers, I block all cookies beyond google and facebook(as required to sign in and stay signed in), tracking cookies of any kind inc meta pixel are blocked, ALL tracking features that I can even hidden ones disabled, I also frequently reset any "ad ids"
Most analytics services are blocked(all common ones blocked)
On chrome all features that require google services inc so called privacy ones are disabled, security/privacy setting set to max beyond remembering passwords all other autofill is disabled, location is off on all websites so is mic and cam
In short I am both perplexed and kinda freaked out, I am almost 100 percent confident its not malware related, tracking related, leak related there is no practical way to use any form of wireless tech to track or even guess my location with my setup
Did I miss a new protocall or does anyone have any ideas, beyond my fingerprinting and cdn blockers all others are HIGHLY trusted but even still I dont see how it could acess info that is simply not there so even if it was spying on me it still would not know my location

Can I use a VPN to block ads on Twitch & Youtube?

Hello, I’m new to VPN, considering purchasing my first one.

I read about the following benefits and am seeking:

  1. While using a VPN and connected to servers from a few countries (Ukraine, Russia, Iraq) that I will not receive ads on Twitch or Youtube. Can anyone vouch for this?

  2. Other benefits, I am a gamer and Steam games are cheaper in countries outside the USA.

I appreciate any input or confirmation concerning this 🙏🏻

Should I be worried?

Hi! I work for an incredibly large financial services company. Due to time constraints, I downloaded Microsoft Office/Teams onto my phone for a few meetings (instead of normally taking them on my work computer). So from Thursday-Saturday, I was using my cellular for work related stuff, but also without me even realizing it, I was on company VPN. Throughout those few days, I just realized I watched porn a couple of times while on my company’s VPN. I have since deleted all the work apps from my phone, except am sort of paranoid right now and am worried I’m gonna get fired or something. I’m young and am fairly new to the corporate environment. Am I ok or should I be worried? Thanks.

Trying to watch NBC on Sling

I signed up for Sling just so I could watch NBC, but it's not one of the local channels available in my zip code. I have a VPN and figured I could connect to another server. I tried New York, but Sling still didn't have it. I'm lazy so I thought I'd ask here before trial & erroring more. Can a VPN server give me access to NBC if it's not available locally? I'm ignorant AF about this so if I'm in the wrong community lmk.

How can I make OpenVPN work on a network that blocks VPNs on Steam Deck/Linux?

My work blocks Steam, which makes my breaks quite boring. I have been historically able to use one particular VPN company when I install and connect via command line, but that gets removed with every Steam Deck Update. I installed TunnelDeck, and have used the services OpenVPN file to set up a connection to the same location it autoconnects to when I do it through the command line, but now it will always time out.

How could I go about fixing this? I know for a fact that this provider works, even on this restricted network, but it only seems to work when done via command line. I would just reinstall it every time, but another issue is preventing me from getting it working via the old method currently, and having it not go away every update would be magnificent.

Edit: Genuinely meaning no offense, but I'm not interested in comments about "offline mode" or telling me I shouldn't be using a VPN. I know what will and won't get me into trouble at my own work. I'm just looking for an actual answer to my question.

Do you need a VPN to get rid of hwid ban?

Stupid question: Kinda new to this stuff. I’m hwid banned right, do I actually need a VPN to get unbanned besides changing the serials and stuff. Because my ip is different from when I got banned after restarting my internet. And if so, what would a VPN do that just changing my public ip wouldnt. Thanks in advance.

“Fastest” VPNs Slowing Speeds by over 50%. Any suggestions?

I have a one year subscription to Ex which I got because I heard that it was the fastest of the VPNs, but it's cutting my home WiFi Speeds by 50-60% which is crazy.

I have Spectrum 1 Gig internet plan and RBK 763 Mesh Router system. Without ex connected I get speeds in the 800's. I enable Ex and the speeds plummet to 300's. The Upload speeds stay the same whether connected or not at 40 mops. Im trying different servers, but same results. I can't take those speeds, so l'm doing a free trial with N, but that only gave me slightly faster speeds than ex. Still 50-60% slower.

Any suggestions how I can fix this? I understand that VPNs inevitably will cut your speed, but when I do some searching online, it usually mentions a 5-10% decrease which I would be totally fine with. Thanks!

Closing VPN app because battery drainage?! iOS

Hi guys, I hope somebody knows this.

I just got my first commercial vpn and I'm pretty happy with its performance. What I'm not happy with, is the battery drainage. 39% of my overall usage was the vpns app alone. I then went ahead and closed the app after getting connected. Now a few days later it went down to 3%. Why would I need to keep the app open? iPhone tells me vpn is still connected even with the app closed. What difference does it make? What is the app doing in the background that kills my battery this fast?

VPN / AirPlay / Mirror troubleshooting

Hi all,

I’m trying to watch a show that is exclusive to New Zealand as my wife and I are considering extensive travels and possibly relocation there.

The show is only available on TVNZ, who has a streaming capability in their site as well as a mobile app.

In order to watch the show I am using a VPN and changing my time zone (either one doesn’t work by itself) and it let me register and stream the show.

The issue is, I want to airplay or mirror it to the TV so my family can watch it also.

When I airplay, I get a red circle with a line thru it in the lower left corner. Some googling indicated it could be mismatched formats, and to select a format in the video player. There are no settings available in the player, however. I have also tried setting my Apple TV to the NZ region and changing the time zone, no dice. My VPN provider which is included in another subscription I have (so I don’t want to buy a separate VPN) does not have a tvOS app (yet, at least). According to the TVNZ faq they do support airplay. This is the same issue regardless of whether I use my phone or Mac to airplay, and it happens when I attempt to mirror as well as airplay (although I believe mirroring results in an airplay connection, or so it seems in the menus). I’m about ready to give up unless there is something I’m just missing, any ideas you have I’d appreciate.
