This group is for the discussion of the religion of Vodou. For now, it is focused on the Haitian tradition, but I welcome links and discussions of West African, New Orleans, or other related traditions.
This Group is open to everyone. I don't do background checks. If you are looking for a Group that is focused on one particular tradition or lineage, this is not it. If you feel strongly that your tradition or lineage is the only true path, you probably won't be happy here.
*Keep it clean: no name-calling, no swearing at people. No personal attacks due to race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity. No personal attacks due to anything, ever, or you're out of here. Act like a grown-up, ok? Basic common courtesy applies.
*Keep it sane: This Group is a public, online forum. If you post something, be prepared for alternate & dissenting opinions. If you are seeking validation, a public online forum is a terrible way to go about it. If you are seeking information, we can help. But there is a limit to how much you can learn online. If you want to understand & practice Vodou, an In Real Life community & mentor is what you need.
We welcome people who are just curious, new practitioners, and experienced Mambos and Houngans.

Hi everyone! I was wondering if it’s safe to use Erzulie Freda Cologne even though I’m not initiated into the religion I have a lot of reverence/admiration for her (I LOVE HER🥲lol) and the culture itself that 1.I don’t want to be disrespectful to the spirits and 2.I don’t want to attract negativity towards me. I appreciate all feedback thaaaank yoouuu! :D
i had a dream about papa legba and he came too me and spoke too me but it being a dream i can only remember so much from it the most i remember was when he came too me i instantly knew who he was tho i could tell by his clothes and the color pattern on his clothes it was papa legba but he didn't really say much all he really did say was something about oshun coming too protect me or something and i don't wanna assume things unless i get a reading or something but could this be him reaching out too me or trying too connect with me in some shape or form and if so would i need or not need a reading too find out?. And i wanna know if someone here can probably explain this dream too me if they know anything
A person I know his grandmother was a lougawou. Does this make him one ? Or does this have any effect in him ?
The Lwa who walk with me are known as the Marassa Twa or “3 Femmes d’Égypte.” They are considered very powerful and strong Lwa, but in my experience, they are also very, very jealous. Whenever I have tried to form a close friendship or relationship, they have taken that person away. I always thought these losses were due to something about me—until I got a reading.
In the reading, I was told that they walk with me, that they love me very much, and that their jealousy prevents me from building close connections with people. I’m not sure if that’s entirely true, but how is that love? How is forcing me into loneliness and solitude an expression of love? That feels more like obsession, and it’s been driving me insane for years.
Anyway, they want me to serve them, so I followed the proper steps to call them. However, I haven’t received any dreams or signs; now I’m just here, wondering why. They’ve appeared in my dreams before, but I never understood what they were saying, which is why I went to get a reading. In the reading, I was simply told that they want me to serve them—a request that I haven’t heard good things about either.
Good evening all, I've heard some stories about the sea goddess, whether Yemoja (Yemaya) or La Siréne & I've heard that there have been times she has lured people into the ocean & then after time brought them back & they either looked different, got more wealthy, this that & the third.
Have you ever heard these stories before? Are they true? What's your experience with La Siréne? Have you ever had a "supernatural" or spiritual experience with her apart from possession?
Looking to get more information since I can’t make the trip home to New Orleans. need a credible source for reading and Mambo, not someone trying get rich or use my soul to pay off their debt.
I saw that duolingo had a program, completed one lesson, just wondering if there’s a better place for me to go.
hello,
I am looking for a hougan in the Florida area. I am willing to travel to any location far or near, please share any recommendations?
Hi! Blessings to all. I'm currently looking for guidance on sources from where to study vodou. I come from a lukumi santeria background, but am not yet initiated or been given my own orishas.
I've been wanting to study more on vodou but I have no idea where to find veritable resources.
I live in Panama and there is not a strong vodou community here, mostly is santeria and espiritismo, so there isnt anyone I can reach out to for information.
I thank you all in advance for any help on finding my way on this path.
I’m a black history undergraduate student doing my thesis on trans-atlantic african diasporic religion, and also a practitioner of American hoodoo. I have read and done a lot of research of Vodou and feel very close to the religion despite being an outsider, I would guess because of my diasporic relationship. I’ve been learning Kreyol in my free time as well. I would like to be able to speak with some vodou practitioners as well as manbos and houngans but I’m wary of just going on the internet and finding one that I don’t know anything about to get my information from, if that makes sense. I would love to just be able to have a conversation with someone here, or if any of you have a favorite manbo or houngan to consult, please let me know!!!
I’m sorry if this is a dumb question, I’m very new to this.
I have this secondary question as well: how often do you pray?
Whats your opinion on lwa's manifesting in more than one head at once? For example Sen jak/balenyo in 2 heads at once (or even more) at the same fiesta.
I personally believe in this because I've always seen it happen (21 divisions). I've usually seen Martha manifest in 2-3 heads at a time or even more, I've seen balenyo in 2 heads at once, and so on. Some people don't share this and say that the lwa cant/shouldnt do this, that it's distortion.(even though it happens anyway and I have recorded it lol) But it seems like they just grew with that concept and can't grasp it, it's not something that only happens in our religion/practice; In lukumi there can be 8 obatala/oshuns etc in the same room during a aña so why wouldn't it be possible in our practice when to us the lwa are at the same level as the orishas?
Hello everyone! I wanted to inquire about a exprience I had back in August/September.For some background I’m 23 and this year has been a very revealing/startling breakthrough of a year but also VERY traumatic lol.I started connecting with my ancestry/spirituality and nature and even just within my own self on a very deep level.Unfortunately a major rift happened between me and my parents. We were getting into fights a lot and due to my mental health issues I was involuntarily hospitalized.
While in the hospital (it was a horror show very inhumane) I was being psychologically tormented by the other patients there.Something had happened (it’s difficult to explain) but someone was shredding my medical records and I could feel my arms going stiff.I was facing a grey window in front of me so I could see my darkened silhouette as this was happening I could see lines being threaded out my vision (it could’ve just been the terrible meds they gave me)but as this was in the mirror I could see a woman behind me and she had the silhouette of Erzulie Freda and it was like she was holding me up from falling/dying.
Not to long after that I started seeing apparitions of children in public and then there was a child that looked at me and they had pure white eyes and they smiled at me.
I am of African descent I don’t know if I have origins from haiti but I love Erzuli Freda and I know that she demands a lot of gifts! I know more than likely I won’t be able to initiate into the religion but would it be possible I could consult like a mambo and give an offering (like an indirect love letter/offering) ?
I went to a botanica and bought some things to use for a bath and was given this to use. I looked at the bottle and the color and when I opened it, I noticed the smell is very unpleasant. Can anyone tell me what this is made of? I’m worried about using it because I don’t know exactly what’s in it or why it has this smell. Does anyone know about this?
Hello everyone I am wondering if I could get some guidance and be pointed in the right direction. I broke up with an ex girlfriend a few months ago and months ago. We currently don’t speak and live in different cities in California. Also i don’t have a good way to contact her myself but she could contact me. I’ve tried a few different things but have I feel that I have gotten scammed out of a lot of money. I know things take time to work every time I would ask why nothing has happened I would either get a generic answer or get ignored. Even worse I’ve been told that I need to pay massive amounts of money like $1500 to see results. I’m not looking for any sweeting or to get talked down I’m looking for hard results as quick as possible and honesty. We haven’t had contact in a while. I’m also looking for reassurance and someone that gives updates. Any suggestions for workers who are online or local to socal (San Diego) would be much appreciated. I still have faith but I’m tired of being heart broken on false promises and hope. I just want to reconnect with her again. If you have any questions ask away or feel free to dm me lll try my best to respond fast.
Thank you all and blessings
I make fanart for a video game I play called Smite which features gods, monsters, spirits, and others from world cultures/religions/mythologies etc. One of those featured is Voodoo.
I wanted to redraw some concept art I made a few years ago of some of the loa because I made them with very little information and wanted to hopefully update them. For most of them I can find a good bit of solid information, however when it comes to Papa Legba and Met Kafou I can't seem to find concrete information on anything. Some information I see conflates the two, some says they are brothers, some say those sources are liars and making it up because of Eshu, it's like a big circle.
I was hoping maybe this subreddit of all places could hopefully provide me with the correct information on these two loa if possible? What their exact functions are, what they look like, colors and symbols important to them, etc?
So Baron Samedi refused to dig my grave as a baby and it seems like the cost has been to have him riding along for my whole life (I’ve seen him a few times, but he influences me constantly, and speaks to me frequently).
I almost died numerous times as a kid: My mom found out she had cancer when she found out she was pregnant (after 6 years of trying including several miscarriages). She held off treatment until I was born, but after fighting it for three years she passed. I had bad pneumonia following birth, and almost died. I crawled off a bridge at 8 months (caught by my left ankle by my sister at the last moment). I almost fell out my dad truck at 45 miles an hour into a rock wall (caught this time by my left wrist). Not to mention, my attempted suicide at 19 (my barracks roommate walked in at the precise time).
But I’m a white French American from New Jersey with no direct ties to Haiti or Vodou culture of any kind (other than a 1700 French pirate that had a penchant for freeing slaves when he could). I haven’t know how to deal with him, so I’ve mostly tried to ignore him. And he has influenced my life quite a bit, despite my attempts to ignore him. I’ve had problems with alcohol, and hypersexuality. I married a redhead. I work as an X-ray tech and he recently said to me “You think that you being a bone man is an accident? Hilarious.”
Over the pasted few years, I have studied ritual Magick and Druid shamanism, so I now have some context for interacting with various deities and spirits, so I would really like to have a more conscious , deliberate, and hopefully mutually beneficial relationship.
But I have no idea where to even begin. A close friends of my wife is a vodou priestess in NY, so I have thought about talking to her. But I would love some feedback here, so I can approach the conversation as kindly and gracefully as possible. Thanks in advance for any help.
Hello all,
I was wondering if Metres Ezili Freda is connected to any element as La Siréne is connected to water (ocean) & Ezili Dantor is connected to fire (so I've heard)? And is Osun also a lwa in Vodou? Or does Metres Freda take her place as spirit of love?
I've read that in northern Haiti mainly, St. Filomez is seen as the younger sister of Ezili Freda & is more venerated that Freda on that side than in other parts, is this true?
Something I made
I hear that haitian voudu, more deka lineage is mixed with taino/indigenous. But I have never seen any Haitian serving the división india, that pertains to 21 divisions. I've never seen a Haitian in there practice, or anybody in Haiti mounting anacaona, caonabo, Indio bravo, de la Paz, etc. Simbi is a different thing, from Congo origin that is not taino, which is maybe what people are talking about, but I make this post to see if anybody has information about this. + even though this is some how controversial, Haitians are not descendants of tainos, they're descendants of as we all know Africans, before they arrived to the island all the tainos were extinct, so in what way would they have a connection to them to be mounting them/serving them other then the tainos being the indigenous people of that land??
Are there any manbo or oungans in the philadelphia area? Wanting to learn more but there doesn't seem to be a community here.
I'm not a practitioner of vodou, but I'm very interested in the various religions, and I wish to have a deeper look at vodou traditions.
I would appreciate suggestions on text I could read or sites with accurate informations
Thank you in advance
(All advise, rituals, spells are welcome)
Disclaimer: I didn't write this to brag this was literally my life
I feel a bit odd putting myself out there but I could really use some help.
For as long as I can remember my energy has always been attractive to people, especially men. I could literally walk outside no makeup, hair not done, unmatched clothes & men would still walk up to me. Any time I walk into a place people swarm me, children & adults people just enjoyed being around me & I enjoyed being around people. I've had women come up to me & try to marry me off to their sons (as it is done in my culture). I never had trouble when it came to money, relationships etc it was like everything was easy for me. Then I met this guy, we dated for about 9 months (that's a whole pregnancy term) & he was struggling with a lot, both in finances & home life. I tried to be his safe space, whenever he needed to get away I was there, when he needed someone to speak to, I listened. The relationship was fine & dandy, but then something happened. We slept together & after that things spiraled out of control for me. He wasn't a bad person or anything but what he was struggling with, I started struggling with. I was invisible to everyone, my home life started to struggle, I couldn't hold down a single job, my mental health declined, I have been in isolation for a whole year, i dont go out anymore. It's even messing with my family relationships. I missed my mother's birthday party, I missed my sister's graduation party, I didn't go out for my dad's birthday dinner, I didn't even go out for the family trip.
I basically started living his life & I realize now that a soul tie/energy cord has been formed & that he somehow absorbed my energy & I took on his. Meanwhile, he was able to get a better paying job that allowed him to travel & find his own place, he had a baby & was just living it up.
I want my power back, I want my energy back. I'm tired of being stuck, I'm sick & tired of being sick & tired.
Please help
Any lwas that like apple cider? I can imagine the Marassa would enjoy the drink but was curious if anyone else enjoyed this drink.

Hi beautiful people, so on the night of Sunday 20th October I had a dream...I saw a massive building and there was a Gede fest celebration taking place, lots of dancing, music, fun, etc. However, I did not enter the building I just saw everything from the outside...I did see Baron Samedi and in front of him was a long line of people waiting to go in, they were all dressed up in black and purple, it was beautiful. He had on his attire and a cane with a skull on it.
In the dream, I was very present and joyful, especially when I saw Baron...I was also with a few practitioners of Haitian Vodou that I know of from social media...just to put it out there I am not initiated into Haitian Vodou or any ATR but i am very spiritually connected to the elements, my ancestors and spirit guides. I respect ATR because I know they are closed practices but I was wondering why I had this dream...I am currently at a crossroads in my life and I know through research that Baron spends much of his time at the crossroads between life and death...I'm open to hear your thoughts!
Love and light
