This group is for the discussion of the religion of Vodou. For now, it is focused on the Haitian tradition, but I welcome links and discussions of West African, New Orleans, or other related traditions.

I am resurrecting this group, so feel free to message me with any ideas for features, etc. that you would like to see.

This Group is open to everyone. I don't do background checks. If you are looking for a Group that is focused on one particular tradition or lineage, this is not it. If you feel strongly that your tradition or lineage is the only true path, you probably won't be happy here.

*Keep it clean: no name-calling, no swearing at people. No personal attacks due to race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity. No personal attacks due to anything, ever, or you're out of here. Act like a grown-up, ok? Basic common courtesy applies.

*Keep it sane: This Group is a public, online forum. If you post something, be prepared for alternate & dissenting opinions. If you are seeking validation, a public online forum is a terrible way to go about it. If you are seeking information, we can help. But there is a limit to how much you can learn online. If you want to understand & practice Vodou, an In Real Life community & mentor is what you need.

We welcome people who are just curious, new practitioners, and experienced Mambos and Houngans.

FEEL FREE TO POST/COMMENT IN ENGLISH OR KREYOL!

Houngan Hector Salva: Real or Scammer?

Hello to everyone. I would like to get in touch with people who have real experiences with Houngan Hector Salva and his work.

As the net is full of positive testimonials, but his institute kinda offers a deposit on the prices…I’m looking out for real, unpaid, testimonials.

I’m thinking of contacting him and asking him for help, but before I do I kinda want to be sure that it’s not a scam or just someone who takes advantage of people in need.

Thanks

Opinions on a certain root worker.

For some reason it’s on my spirit to ask yall if you know of Satin Sanchez, otherwise known as Satin Says. I discovered her around November of last year, and have ordered a few things from her, (my first order I placed around black Friday and didn’t show up until February.) I am new to voudo and how it all exactly works, and although I will admit some of of her stuff works, I’ve been getting a weird feeling lately, perhaps because her prices are so high, orders take soo long, and she often times can be quite snarky to people who comment with genuine questions, and basically makes them feel dumb if they don’t read EVERY single thing on her website. Even then things aren’t clear but there’s an energy of feeling too stupid to ask. Aside from that, again I’d like to say I’ve noticed some changes since using her products (I will also take some credit as I practice slightly myself) however I think my intuition is pressing me to inquiry with yall is because I’ve really set the intentions to find the most real deal practitioners out there, and perhaps she’s a start in the right direction but I’m not quite sure if she’s the real deal. One example in particular that made me weary of her was when she said in a interview that Legba is spirit that you shouldn’t mess with, insinuating he’s sinister and malevolent, which in my experience is far from the kind and at times humorous spirit he has. (I also wanna say I know hoodoo and voudo are no the same but I’ve seen her talk about Dominican voudo, hoodoo, and being a root worker)

I guess my main question besides just yalls general vibe and reading of her work is: ~ How long does it typically take to concentrate/ bless candles/ oils/ herbs/ mojo bags/ etc, specifically for voudo/ and hoodoo ? (I’m trying to figure out why it takes so long besides having so many orders)

~Is it recommended to purchase products from people who seem to not have gone through a full initiation? ( I can’t tell if she has been or not)

-Should one be weary if they claim to be the best in the world, but I don’t see a lot of other voudo/ hoodoo people talking about her or following her?

Like I said I’m still quite new to this, and feel very called to eventually learn how to do this all myself, however I wanna make sure I am ordering from/ giving my money to someone super legit, so that perhaps also some day I can study under them or someone they recommend. If the more OGs in here says she’s checks out, then I’ll happily keep working with her; if not, well, other suggestions are open🤍 Thank you in advance

cantos

haitian voudu cantos compared to the ones in 21 divisions are very deep and have a lot of meaning, This is because the cantos in haitian vudu not only talk about the lwa, but talk about the humans experience with the lwa,

Share your favorite haitian voudu chant id love to hear it(translate it)🌝🙏🏼

Can you pray individually to a lwa?

Hi everyone, this is my first post in here but I’ve been interested in Vodou for a while & am trying to kickstart my journey into it (Yes I know I should get a reading by a houngan or manbo, I’m going to do that before interacting with anything else), but a big question I have is if you can pray to a lwa by yourself?

Vodou experiences ?

Have you ever had any Vodun experience? I can barley find anything helpful on the internet and would like to hear experiences from people who‘ve worked with it successfully. I just bought a BOCIO directly from Benin and I think it‘s possible that it might work but I am still not sure. Have anyone used one before? Does it work?

Brown Flowers & Pompeia?

Any tips on not letting flowers get stained brown by sprinkles of Pompeia lotion? I noticed that after scattering rose petals and sprinkling the lotion, the petals end up turning brown from direct contact and was curious if there was a way to prevent the flowers from changing color (I just don't like how the lotion turns the petals brown if the visuals matter here).

Voodoo in the Bronx?

I was wondering if anyone had any insight on this (tried google but not getting much results) I live right next to a cemetery and will sometimes walk my dog there (please note I respect the cemetery and only let my dog on the walking path) anyway, he began pulling me to something and would not give up so I decided to go closer to see what he was trying so hard to get at and I find this…a knife stuck in the ground covered in blood with the head of a decapitated (pigeon, I believe) with some pennies scattered around it…I assume this is some sort of voodoo or just an insane person 😂 so just wondering if anyone knows the significance of this. Thank you in advance!

Haitian-Cuban Houses?

Does anyone here know of any Haitian-Cuban sosyetes in the US? For context, there were a number of Haitians that migrated to Cuba at one point and brought some interesting lineages along the way that are still practiced in Santiago. Are there any Haitian houses from Cuba that people know of that reside in the US?

"voodoo" in World of Warcraft

So I honestly don't know much about real vodou, just the stereotypes mostly, and the fact that it's a closed religion. But I recently started playing the game WoW as a troll, and apparently their religion is voodoo. I didn't think anything of it at first, lots of media does it, until a character was talking to their god and referred to them as Loa, which I know is a real term. I try to look it up and people consider it a full fledge religion within the game universe, like they put the real world religion in the game? So I was very confused and genuinely really wanting to know the opinions of people who actually practiced real vodou. Is it racist? Culture appropriation? All the above or none of it?

Edit: upon further looking into it, it is more the cartoonish stereotype of voodoo rather than the real religion, but still curious on opinions.

Revenge

This man I was having sex with SA me. I was thinking about other extreme ways to get back at him, but they’re all illegal. And I don’t wanna risk going to jail for this person. If I pay someone to do magic on him will the magic boomerang back to me? Will it mess with my own life? I can’t let this person get away with it.we were having consensual sex but then this person entered me anally after I expressed I wasn’t comfortable with it and was rough. This is not a troll. Someone gave me somebody that I can pay to get work done on him. Can someone already have protection against vodou? I have his address, date of birth, and full name and photos. Im a Christian but im willing to face whatever eternal punishment to get back at this man.

Is Vodou all encompassing?

Also posted on r/santeria

I have a yearning for one-ness and completeness. Allow me to explain as I don't have great words for it. I always felt incomplete. Since I was a kid I was searching for a way of living that seemed coherent and all encompassing. Not an aspect but everything.

The first time I felt I was living something like a complete world view was when I was in the Marines. Everything we did was done the Marine Corps way. Everyone I worked with for the most part had the same underlying perspectives. We ate, worked, and slept as Marines.

I ended up leaving because my purpose isn't to be an agent of the American state. But that feeling of having a unified system of thinking and living and the two are not separate but two expressions of the same thing was really attractive to me. I wanted that feeling of a cohesive worldview, lifestyle, and community.

I've observed similar way of being in the Jewish community. I've seen it among more serious Muslims. I've seen it in the Chinese community. I've lived it in the Marines.

Is Vodou (or any other ATR/ADR) like that? Is it supposed to be an all encompassing way of living and understanding the world? Or is it more like Christianity where it's an aspect of your life?

Edit: just to give an example.

A Marine is a Marine for life no matter where they live or work once they leave the service.

A Jew is a Jew no matter what language they speak or where they are born.

Is a Santero or Palero or Voudousaint like that? Is your way of life your first community or the country you're born in? Do you recognize each other as being in the same community regardless of birthplace or language spoken?

Need advice on a strange situation

I’ll try to keep it short and sweet. Over the last 4 years, my husbands family has had one family member pass away, each year without fail. It’s at a point where it really doesn’t seem to be a coincidence and it started right after we met each other. We met in January 2020, his nonno passed away in February that year. We’ve just attended his pop’s funeral last week. The youngest was 33 and the oldest was 80. Any answers, suggestions or advice is welcome

Papa Legba info

What’s the best way to simply learn about him? I’m not looking to practice vodou )i’m spiritual but not tied to vodou in any way and want to respect the close practice) but would like to look into why I am drawn to his presence. Spiritually I’d call myself a medium more than psychic or similar, and Im leaning into that side of my spiritual journey.

All advice is welcome, I want to be as respectful as possible.

Sources for research on the basic traditions/origins of Haitian Vodou?

I'm very new to the concept of the religion, and am aware of the widespread misrepresentation of this ancient practice. I'm creating a presentation about the reality of the religion and am looking for reliable and accurate sources, preferably from people who practice the religion. I don't want to fall victim to misinformation and wish to educate this practice clearly.
