i just played the letter and absolutely loved it, mostly because of the structure and crazy branches. most vns i've played with choices only affect endings, so i'd like to read some other ones with more a of an open flowchart like the letter

Weirdest Most Mind Fuck-ey Visual Novel in English

Pretty much title. What's the weirdest, English translated, visual novel you've ever played? I want a recommendation for something that'll leave me going, "what the fuck" and "what did I just play?"

Looking for a VN about the broa

I realized most VNs/anime are almost always about (high school) girls

I'm looking for a VN that has themes of brotherhood or generally has a story that focuses on men (I'm not looking for yaoi pls)

Bonus points if it's on steam

New to VNs, what's one I'd enjoy based on my taste?

Only ones I've played are Saya no Uta (didn't like the story but immaculate vibes) and DDLC (thought it was alright).

In terms of my taste, here are my favorite themes kinda in descending order:

-Guilt & Redemption, can you forgive yourself and can others forgive you if you've done something unspeakably awful? Preferably characters with a desire to change but have great difficulty in it and aren't let off the hook easily.

-The Struggle of Moving On, characters who either long for the good ol' days or characters trapped in the past by a tragedy.

-The Mind in Relation to Reality, how reality can be altered by our states of mind, or how we can ignore it altogether through delusion.

-Moral Grayness, how the same issue can be seen from different perspectives. How someone even with noble intentions can hurt others who aren't deserving of it.

-Connection & Companionship, the struggle of opening up to others, how it helps and hurts.

Also not as important but still appreciated, aesthetic. I'm partial to stories that take in the late 20th or 21st century and that allow quietness or the world to stew. Either a warm, nostalgic feeling like a sunset, an eerie stillness where you can tell something is off, or a pervasive melancholy that invokes a sense of somberness. Funny enough, even though I hated the story, Saya is very close to matching my ideal, especially with that OST. Again though, aesthetic isn't as important as themes, I'd gladly take a medieval fantasy setting if it hit those themes.

Sorry for rambling and putting so much on this. But if you by any chance have anything that comes even remotely close to my taste, you will be my blessing.

Is there a visual novel with humour like asobi asobase, gokudolls, prison school or great teacher onizuka?

I just want to laugh my ass off between shifts; I haven't connected with any of the anime, j-dramas or K-dramas currently airing. My country's comedy specials haven't been doing it for me lately either. I wanted something to take my mind off things because it's been rough the past few days at work. A colleague recommended Gintama, but it's taking a while for it to click with me.

GTO, Prison School, and Asobi Asobase, in particular, were phenomenal; I was really invested in the characters' lives from the first episode to the final moments of the shows. I would really appreciate it if someone could recommend something similar with visual novels. Privacy is not an issue at work, so I'm open to all genres and untranslated works.

TLDR: A visual novel featuring comedy with outrageous situations, morally questionable characters, unapologetic use of dark or slapstick humor (done correctly—I found Urusei Yatsura boring but was captivated by GTO), and absurd premises akin to Prison School or something reminiscent of a 14 y/o's wild imagination (think angel beats or girls und panzer). It doesn't need to tick all the boxes; capturing the same vibe as the shows mentioned in the title would be more than enough.

    Thank you.

Novice Programmer | Lifelong Gamer | Huge Movie Nerd : Looking for Inspiration for First VN

I always loved choose you own adventure books when I was a child and bought some AVNs on Steam as joke and immediately became hooked. As someone who always wanted to be a filmmaker, or screenwriter, or author, and who toiled away at open mics for a few years I love to tell stories and write.
I have quit my job that was making me miserable and I am beginning work on my first visual novel. I have various ideas... perhaps too many lol.
I wanted to know what is that interests you? What kind of story would you like to see? I would even more be more than willing to collaborate with someone if they had a brilliant story that I could see throwing all my energy behind.
    Only notes:
I do not want to do anything with a women that are just turned 18 but are still in high school and look young for their age.
I also do not think another game where you happen to live with your "landlord" and your "female roommate" is necessary.
I have been brainstorming some ideas using public domain films (they provide name recognition and as far as I know we can use the image from those films and do something really unique with them that i am experimenting with)
Right now my top VNs that I have played way too much are Slay the Princess, Scarlett Hollow, Fresh Women, A Shot In the Dark, and College Kings. Other games that I do no think would be included and were not made with Renpy but with some. thought could make something similar would be Little Guardsman and Suzerain.

    Looking for psychological horror vn

I recently got into visual novels and finished Saya no uta. I've been wanting to play new visual novels but I can't seem to find any that would fit my taste. I want to play something that has psychological horror or some really fucked up shit that'd make me regret ever playing them. Some recommendations would be appreciated thank you very much!

Looking for a VN where male MC helps hurt girl

Does anybody know any good romance VNs where a male main character helps a depressed/traumatized/sad girl? I really romantic stories about someone helping someone else heal from pain, and I’d love some recommendations. It can be super depressing, as long as it has a good ending. Thanks in advanced.

New Episode of “The Dark Hour”!

Hi everyone! I have made and released the next episode to “The Dark Hour”, a RPG Drama/Visual Novel based on real life events recorded in diary entries of mine from a decade and a half ago.

This is a deeply personal project as it relates to my personal history and journey to who I am today. I truly believe that it makes for an interesting and engaging watch. As a VN, it is inspired by other RPG’s in its story telling style and the music and art is something I am proud of.

This second episode in particular is heavily story driven, it focuses on being informative over the protagonist’s past. Enjoy!

I’d also very much appreciate feedback on the comments please :)

Suggest me a VN based on what I enjoy

Hi, I'm looking for VNs that I might like. I like BL, Horror, Mystery, Denpa and weird stuff in general.

I have played the following VNs during the last months and enjoyed them for various reasons:

    • Shingakkou Noli me Tangere (PIL/SLASH)
    • Higanbana no Saku Yoru Ni (07th Expansion)
    • Yami no Koe (Black Cyc)
    • Yami no Koe Zero (Black Cyc)
    • Sayoko (Black Cyc)
    • Gore Screaming Show (Black Cyc)
    • YOU and ME and HER (Black Cyc)

The things I love the most are psychosexual freudian horror vibes, religion, queer themes, meta stuff, moral corruption, distorted perception of reality and atmospheric/immersive ways of storytelling. Sexual content is OK, so sex-focused or nukige recs are also welcome as long as they have at least two of the things I mentioned.

    Need some mystery/detective VNs

Hi I'm just getting into Visual novels I haven't played many because I don't know where to start and what to choose. So far I played Famicom Detective Club 1 & 2, Danganronpa & Steins;Gate. I'm looking for something similar.. I know one of the best Detective VNs Jinguji Saburo didn't get a lot of attention in the west so it almost impossible to find the older tittles in english (I know some newer JS games got released in the west as jake hunter).

I have made a new Visual Novel

The Dark Hour Episode 1 - Welcome To The Dark Hour

While I class it as a visual novel, this is also a bit of an RPG Mock Up. The Dark Hour is based on real life diary entries I have made over 10 years ago and tackles many social issues in the life of pre-teens and young teens going through secondary school. Some themes include “coping with early childhood deaths, bullying, personality disorders”. While the themes are pretty dark, some standout diary entries are covered, so we get to explore a brilliant cast of characters (names and identities are altered).

I have borrowed RPG elements from several different RPG games I have played over time and made all music in The Dark Hour on my android smartphone.

    Enjoy!

Please help me find this weird cryptid romance vn

So, I wanna say I found it when I was 13 but it could be way later or earlier when I saw it. I found it on YouTube and was captivated by its weird plot and romantic character, potentially a failed lab experiment that's mostly a glob of flesh but still resembles a humanoid girl. Later on, it grows more humanoid and gains fingers for its hand and voice box to talk, the YouTube video being censored and cut after this development.

I can't remember how humanoid it started off as, but it was still recognizable as somewhat human. Can someone please help me find out what this weird game was? I just remembered the absurd plot and now it's gnawing on my brain.

I know it's not a game suggestion, but I need to find anything I can.

I suggest you go check out Unforgettable: 4th Dimensional Bartending.

"After a car accident, you suddenly find yourself in a bar with a mysterious bartender. Have some drinks, talk about whatever, leave whenever you want and face the ending resulting from your decisions"

Unforgettable is a game about talking to someone who seems to know everything. Talk about your life, your hobbies, their life, their hobbies, the meaning of both of your lives, how gods are born, the origin of the universe and the role of humanity. Highly inspired by Va-11 Hall-A and Ace Attorney.

For those interested, here's the link to the Kickstarter page and here's the itch.io page.

(The game is mine, this is promotion, I'm sorry if that's against the rules :/ )

VNs/routes about death and the meaning of life

A remake of my favourite game is coming out in a week (Persona 3 Reload), and its themes of mortality, grief and what it meant to live are personally very relevant to me. Are there any visual novels or routes that tackle similar themes?

I want a VN with a gripping, emotional, story, with cute girls of course, and free or low price.

I for the first time in my life read and then watched Akira. And after that I've been exploring much Japanese stuff. And now I want an interactive story, and I found out there are many VN's. So what I kind of want for my very first VN. It has to be free or a relatively low price (Free-$10), it has to be good with a compelling and emotional story (I'm already depressed so it can be a depressing but extremely touching story) and preferably with cute girls you can interact with. And it has to be available on an M1 Mac system.
