i need some help. Today i downloaded some intel drivers on my main pc, and now my vm keeps freezing every 10 seconds or so, it doesnt crash just doesnt move anything, a temp fix is changing the resolutions on the window but it comes back quickly. i already restored the pc to a state without the drivers and no help. Is there a way to restore the vm without losing any data?
im using a windows 7 64 bit image the host is a win 11, i use 4gb of ram for the vm, it doesnt take all the pc ram so i dont think thats the problem, 256 mb of vram and im not using 3d acceleration. im on virtual box 7.0.20
thanks in advantage
I want to start using Virtualbox, but I read that the Expansion Pack sends user data to the US government. Is that true?
Some time ago my VM (Win11 host, Rocky Linux 8 guest) started to randomly abort. Usually, I just minimize the window, do something else and then notice that it's gone. So far, I wasn't ever able to "catch" it in the act (i.e. when I'm actively interacting with VM) and VM doesn't do any tasks when it gets aborted (just some windows open).
I have 64GB RAM and I tied lowering VM RAM from 42GB to 32GB with no success. Also tried VBoxInternal/RamPreAlloc 1
option in case it was OoM issue and that didn't help.
There is nothing in the logs either (they end with "resuming" event when I resume it then there is nothing for hours until the VM is aborted).
Not sure if the issue was caused by some VBox update but it wasn't a problem at the start. Currently I'm on 7.0.20 (I had to revert from 7.1 since that's a broken mess).
Any tips on how to diagnose it and fix it?
Virtualbox version 7.1.4
Host Windows 11
Guest Debian Linux
Host Extensions installed
I have an on-board mediatek MT7922 wifi device built into the motherboard that I don't generally use on the host machine. I would like to do a complete pass-through of the device to a VM, so that the VM can use it and see all of the wifi SSIDs in the area and connect to them in the VM itself. I don't want to simply connect to an SSID on the host machine and bridge the connection... how can this be done?
-Virtualbox is 6.1 (I will update after I figure out this os issue) -Host OS: Windows 10 -Guest OS: Windows 10 -My other VMs like Ubuntu work fine. -VT-X/AMD-V is greyed out -I don't know what my HyperV setting is but I changed it recently and nothing worked so it's on or off or whatever option it's supposed to be.
Also I'm not sure about Host Extension but Guest Additions but again the VM was working perfectly normal before.
ISSUE: I haven't used the VM for a year. I have since built a new computer. There was a saved state that I could see the VM's windows 10 desktop (greyed out) but would immediately crash due to errors like GuestAdditions being missing. I relocated GuestAdditions.
Then I get a invalid display error in settings as it was set to VBoxVGA and has to be changed to VBoxSVGA. I changed the Network Adapter since it's a new PC.
I tried cloning it and going back to a previous snapshots and it just hangs on the blue windows logo screen that seems to freeze ever few seconds as loading symbol goes in circles indefinitely. I left it for a few hours and nothing. (Honestly I'm not sure if I've ever restarted the VM before today).
I don't even know how to troubleshoot from here. What else is there to try? Unfortunately I don't have the windows boot media as it was some "install windows 10 free iso" program that Microsoft released and the program no longer even launches.
here's some of the logs if that matters:

installed VirtualBox 7.14 in on macOS sonoma 14.6.1. (Intel Mac - 3.8 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i7 - AMD Radeon Pro 5700 XT 16 GB - 64 GB RAM > Installed Windows 10 with allocated 4096 MB RAM and 2 CPU = can run Windows (but sluggish)
Installed Guest Additions ISO - I added the iso and installed many tries even tried dl older version VBoxGuestAdditions_7.1.0.iso for VirtualBox-7.1.4-165100-OSX.dmg - but default or older do exact same thing ----> Run as Admin > it gets 3/4 way through - soon after the video blink - it crashes and back in Manager it says Aborted. Then in Windows just a non functioning greyd out VM Addons icon is in system tray. i do find it Program Files / Oracle / VirtualBox Guest Additions but no change to Windows functions. Can not complete install without the crash.
in host VirtualBox Menu > Activity > Preferences = CPU load, Network Rate and Disk i/o all have readings but RAM Usage greyed out and says: This metric requires Guest additions to work
net effect is sluggish even running no apps (laggy even with various ram and cpu settings). dont know if just sluggish because mac based or if crash on install = somehow incomplete and not functioning at 100%
I've been using this vm with Linux Mint 22 Cinnamon to test nginx, but today I'm facing a lot of crashes for apparently no reason, at the beginning it looked like the problem was when copy-pasting between host and guest, so i disabled it, but now i just booted, opened the terminal, and it crashed
I don't know what might be the problem, here's the log
My host OS is Windows 10 Pro 22H2, I'm using the 7.0.14 r161095 version, because any newer version for some reason refuses to install, and i use guest additions, even tho i think they aren't the problem because i set it when creating the vm and it didn't give any problems before
Full disclosure, I have a limited background in IT (coming out of sales) but I've been wanting to learn Python, Linux, and ethical hacking to hopefully switch into pen testing soon:
I kicked things off by picking a 1TB external drive for storage and I used Microsoft co-pilot to walk me thru the entire process. I downloaded GParted to create partitions for Ubuntu and Kali Linux. Then, I made a bootable USB with Rufus.
Next, I entered the BIOS & set the USB as the primary boot device, and enabled virtualization from the boot menu. Installed VirtualBox, created VMs for Ubuntu and Kali, then booted from the .iso files.
From there, I watched Ubuntu install, set up user accounts, and got it running. I did the same thing for Kali Linux.
Finally, I configured the network adapters to use NAT for secure internet (I found that adding a VPN slowed it down and kept disconnecting me from the server). I also had to manage the disk space allocation in Virtual Box because it kept crashing.
Step 1: Setting Up the Drive
Step 2: BIOS Configuration
Step 3: VirtualBox Setup
Step 4: Deploying Ubuntu
Step 5: Deploying Kali Linux
Step 6: Post-Installation Configuration
Step 7: Ongoing Maintenance
This might not seem like a big deal to some but I'm pretty proud of myself for not knowing anything about virtualization & deployments and then building a home VM on the first go!
I have a few virtual machines configured in a Vagrant file. They all have a private network declared, and associated IP addresses to go along. However, the network isn't created on either of them. hello, has anyone tried to run Motorcross Madness 1 or 2 in windows xp or 98, I tried in both VM's but for Motorcross Madness 2 there a black screen flash and then the game just crashes and Motorcross madness 1 says there no graphic adapter detected, 3d and 2d acceleration have been enabled. Thanks for any in advance.
Im on virtual Box 6.0 Iv got other games to run alright and this is only for nostalgia thanks again
enabled VT-x/AMD-v and disabled HyperV
installed Guest Additions and/or Host Extensions
host is windows 10 and the guest is windows XP professional 64 bit And Windows 98
I'm a complete newbie to this :/ I appreciate any input
I am trying to use Virtualbox to install an operating system on a partition of my computer, and then boot into it after it's been installed. I want to install solaris 11 on my ThinkPad p1 gen 6, but the normal installer doesn't work right, and CSM doesn't exist on post 2020 intel thinkpads, even though it shouldn't be neccesary, no way to get it working as far as I can tell. I though that doing it by creating a VirtualBox drive that was the physical partition would be the way to go. I am running windows 11, using PowerShell 7 for the commands. I only have 1 physical disk, and I made a ~100gb FAT32 partition as the place the VirtualBox thing would take up.
PS C:\Users\mirandac> cd "C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox"
PS C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox> .\VBoxManage internalcommands createrawvmdk -filename "C:\Users\mirandac\.Virtualbox\VDI\Sol11.vmdk" -rawdisk \\.\PhysicalDrive0 -partitions 3
When I run these commands I get this error
VBoxManage.exe: error: VMDK: could not create new file 'C:\Users\mirandac\.Virtualbox\VDI\Sol11.vmdk'
VBoxManage.exe: error: Error code VERR_PATH_NOT_FOUND at F:\tinderbox\win-5.2\src\VBox\Storage\VMDK.cpp(3497) in function int __cdecl vmdkCreateRawImage(struct VMDKIMAGE *,struct VDISKRAW *const ,unsigned __int64)
VBoxManage.exe: error: Cannot create the raw disk VMDK: VERR_PATH_NOT_FOUND
VBoxManage.exe: error: The raw disk vmdk file was not created
I don't know what to do, or if I'm even on the right path.
I am using VirtualBox 5.2.44 r139111 (Qt5.6.2) on the lastest version of windows 11, and if I could get the partition thing working I would install solaris 11, though if I can't use this to try and boot solaris 11 on bare metal, then I would need a suggestion on what to do.
I'm trying to switch to Ubuntu for my daily driver. There're a few things that are just easier to do on windows. I'm wondering if it's feasible to set up samba share on Ubuntu then host a windows vm with 2 virtual nics one to connect to the internet and one for local connectivity to the samba share. I'm hoping to confirm that it's a feasible build and get suggestions before making the effort. Feedback is appreciated.
Hi! I have to had a x11 virtual machine for college reasons, I cant use xwayland or something similar. I have a bspwm + sxhkd virtual machine but I can't get the super key working in the vm. Once I try to open a new terminal or close a window or some other action, the host system take the command instead of sending it to the vm. My host wm is Hyprland with latest linux kernel. I'm using (and have to use) virtualbox to run the virtual machine. I have read that wayland to x11 vm can carry problems, I want to know if someone was able to do it. Thanks!
edit:
- virtualbox version: virtualbox-7.1.4-1
- os: arch +hyprland
i recently noticed that upon starting a vm ( both linux and windows) i receive a "display failure" message and when i made a windows xp vm and enabled 3d acceleration, i got a message saying "the graphics controller does not support the selected feature". i have hyper-v enabled, but disabling it doesn't change anything (but i will keep it disabled during this troubleshooting, don't worry) , virtualbox 7.1.4 which i tried reinstalling to no avail, extensions pack installed, windows 11 23h2 host and guest additions installed on guest systems. i never had problems but with the recent updates (i belive since 7) i started having issues like this one and guest OSs not saving state (an alternative would be hibernating but oh wait, it's not available)
EDIT: after posting this and reciving the automated reminder in the comments, i went to check if nested vt-x was enabled and noticed that it's grayed out. is it a problem?
As mentioned above I wanted to learn ethical hacking and the tutor on the udemy course is showing how to download vmware file MSEdge-Win10-VMware-disk1 to virtual machine
but before that he showed how to install a modified of kali linux that in the virtual machine. I tried doing his version of kali linux into the virtual machine but failed so I installed the original version of kali linux into virtual box
so now he wants a MSEdge-Win10-VMware in virtual machine
but there is no virtual box windows file available in microsoft due to some tech problems
so I am stuck with MSEdge-Win10-VMware-disk1 which isnt supportable in virtual box
PLEASEEE HELPP ME OUT!!
I've been reading up on this and what I'm planning is building a workstation with a 1050 Ti dedicated for use by Vbox. It will not be used by the Host OS as that is a Radeon 6800.
What I've found on Google (Ai) was that I'd need to use IOMMU to pass the 1050Ti to Vbox - simply put it's a dedicated GPU for that and not used/accessed by the Host OS unless the Radeon Fails.
Would this be a good piece of software to use for me playing games on the host machine while my gf uses steam link to remote into the vm?
if not is there other software you would recoommend?
I just can't seem to have any luck with VMs on my machine. VMware is slow no matter what settings I try, and I switched to virtualbox and it got much better. Usually this is a simple process. Export to ovf in VMware, import in virtualbox. 2 buttons, 2 long load screens, then positive results. I have another machine given by a coworker that I converted to ovf, but it errors out at the end of the 40 minute load. The folder I created shows the disk drive but not .vbox and other associated files. Is this common? What might I be missing?
Virtualbox 7.0 Host Windows 11, guest windows 10 Can't change settings and add guest additions because it won't let me get that far

here is my command line : "c:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxManage.exe" createmedium disk --filename C:\Users\XXX\deb2.vmdk --format=VMDK --variant RawDisk --property RawDrive=\\.\PhysicalDrive1 --property Partitions=1,2,3
which I adapted from https://superuser.com/questions/495025/use-physical-harddisk-in-virtual-box
disk boots fine by itself
Gifs of issues here (imgur) - gif of the issue + issue vs. scaled mode.
(update) pics of issues on two other OS, winXP and win7.
My main issue is - there's a row of pixels warping whenever I move the mouse, and I'd like to fix it without resorting to scaled mode unless there's no other options.
Used to use virtualbox on (hosting on) Windows 7 using vbox 6.0. This year, I finally upgraded to Windows 10, and just got around to re-installing and testing to see if all my machines still work with a newer version of virtualbox. All of them work just fine, except for Windows 98 second edition, which I'll explain below. For reference, I also have multiple machines of different versions of Win XP, none of which have this issue. Update: It's on the other machines too, I just didn't look properly. Windows XP only displays this issue when I click and drag on the desktop; Windows 7 seems to have the same issue all of the time.
The virtual machines of Win98se + Win7 seems to have this line across the windowed screen of a pixel being warped up/down a row, whenever the mouse moves. The mouse itself is not affected, and it made it harder trying to find info on this because almost every search I tried only gave results about mouse issues. Also important to note, this wasn't an issue whatsoever when I hosted on Win 7 / version 6.0.
host/guest/software info:
- Version 7.1.4 r165100 (Qt6.5.3) for Virtual Box
- Extension pack 7.1.4 for Virtual Box
- host: Windows 10 Pro 64 bit
- guests: Windows 98 second edition (Note: originally 'built' on 6.0 of Virtual Box, imported into 7.1.4); additionally Win7 sp1 64bit and Win XP 32 bit machines affected
- "guest additions" not installed on win98; yes installed on XP; yes installed on win7.
- (edit to add) VT-x/AMD-V not enabled on any; tried changing on Win98 just to see, no change.
- (edit to add) HyperV disabled / using default paravirtualization instead for all
I have tried (mostly on the win98 machine, still trying things as I type):
- changing the graphics controller to all other options in the machine settings, with no change (VBoxVGA as well as the others, no changes; VBoxVGA is my default for this machine)
- changing the graphics handling inside of the guest OS (I use SciTech Display Doctor for the drivers on Win98) -- changed colors, monitor sizes, disabling/using the generic drivers, etc, no change to issue
- Fullscreen doesn't change issue, nor resizing the virtualbox window area
- changing to Scaled Mode: this does fix the issue, but I don't like the fuzzier display. I'd like to fix it so that I don't have to use Scaled Mode.
Really sorry if it's an obvious fix or a known issue. I just could not seem to find anything about it.
After updating to 7.1 and running a VM, there's a file called "VirtualBoxVM.dxvk-cache" in my home directory.
What's the purpose of this file, can I delete it or permanently change it's location, and will it reappear if i move or delete it?
Okay, I posted on this before but no solutions provided worked. It appears to me that NAT networking on Windows 11 64bit hosts is broken. DHCP does not work and setting a static IP address does not work either. If I set a static IP address in the correct subnet I cannot ping anything, including other VMs with statics in the same subnet.
VirtualBox 7.1.2, guest additions installed in all VMs
Debian Daedalus VM, Windows Server 2022 VM, and a Windows 11 64bit VM.
What I have tried as far as NAT networks:
None of this works. DHCP never works and setting a static like 192.168.2.101 or 10.0.2.101 also does not work. Am I missing something simple? Is NAT networking broken on Windows 11 hosts? Am I just doing something wrong?
Update:
I removed the NAT network, uninstalled the guest additions, uninstalled VirtualBox 7.1.2 and then installed 7.1.4, installed guest additions, and created a new NAT network. I did not change anything in the NAT network settings. I started my Windows 11 guest and I am still not getting an IP address. I upgraded the guest additions and rebooted. No change. I am now under the full assumption that NAT networking no longer works, period. It worked in version 6 of VirtualBox because I used it. Version 7 broke something badly, or I am doing something wrong despite reading a dozen or so guides on the subject.
Hi, I'm pretty new to VirtualBox and I'm running Windows 11 Pro as Host together with guest Ubuntu 24 LTS version. Whenever I assign more than 16 processors, guest performance is quite bad, or it does not boot at all. Booting issues are random not sure what is causing that yet. As long as I keep processor count to all the cores on one CCD (8 cores/16 threads) I can use the guest pretty comfortably but I need more CPU power,
I've tried switching between Hyper-V and KVM, but with KVM it's not stable.
Turned off Windows features to let VirtualBox use Hyper-V, Core isolation off etc.
Guest additions installed.
Any tips where to look or what to change?
I have had serious trouble replicating the OS setup my first home computer had in VirtualBox and VMWare and the MS one, but I still have the actual hard drive itself. The drive is from approximately 1992, runs Windows 3.11 for Workgroups alongside a separate cover OS specifically for Packard Bell systems at the time. That software was called Packard Bell Explorer.
I actually had the entire PC but it wouldn't work with a broken clock internally and the motherfucker was welded in. For someone with a tremor, that's not happening. That would have been much easier otherwise.
I don't know the reason I care so much. It comes in bursts, and I just lost my job so maybe that's it. My daughter (8) has also expressed interest in seeing what the computing looked like for me when I was her age ever since I showed her all the real world items that became the iconography we use for things today (disk as save, filing cabinet as the folder structure, the idea of a desktop actually mimicking a desktop). She steals my book Inside the Personal Computer all the time.
Is it possible to connect the hard drive with converter cable and take the data to a VM. If so, what would I need to do to get this working?
The link in the post contains images of both the hard drive and two random pages from the book. The book is just cool.
ETA: Per the subreddit rules, I'm running VirtualBox 7.0 on a Windows 10 machine. I know Windows 10 has hit its EOL. I am trying to get a specialized version of Windows 3.11 for Workgroups running in a VM from the hard drive I still have from childhood. I have not enabled or disabled HyperV, because this has never worked for me using the files themselves. I have not solved Guest Additions or Host Extensions.
Originally, I did get Windows 3.1 installed and working. The point of failure is installing Packard Bell Navigator 1.1 installer, which are saved as diskette files. The VM doesn't recognize the files even with PowerISO 8.9 set up.
So I have been running Manjaro (XFCE) as a guest in virtual box for a few years (Manjaro Gnome host), in this setup I have a Host-only network setup in VirtualBox.
NB: libvirtd is not installed/used on host or guest.
In the VM's settings this is selected as Adapter 1 and when enabled this allows host->guest network traffic (plus guest->host).
I then have Adapter 2 also enabled and the attached to field is NAT. This should provide the guest internet access.
However after updating Manjaro the other day (guest AND host - it was about 3 months worth of updates). Things broke..
When booting the VM it now has NO internet access and NO host network access.
If i disable Adapter 2 (NAT) and boot then I regain host->guest network access (but still have no internet).
If I disable Adapter 1 (Host-Only) (and re-enable Adapter 2) and then boot I lose guest->host network access as expected but now I still have NO internet access in the VM.
No matter what networking options I choose in the VM settings it seems I am unable to gain internet access at all and I am now completely stuck on how to resolve this. It would be greatly appreciated if anyone is able to provide any guidance on this issue!!!
Edit: Adding required info
Virtualbox version: 7.1.2 r164945
Paravirtualization Interface: KVM
Hardware virtualization: Nested Paging Enabled
Guest additions is installed
(my setup has been working flawlessly for a few years, I haven't manually changed any settings - networking just broke after recent OS updates)
Hello, has anyone tried running gta sa on windows 7 vm it opens for me but crashes at the intro after selecting new game. Thanks in advance for any help.
im on virtual Box 6.0 Iv got other games to run alright and this is only for nostalgia thanks again
enabled VT-x/AMD-v and disabled HyperV
installed Guest Additions and/or Host Extensions
host is windows 10 and the guest is windows 7 professional 64 bit
Why is it that when I start up VBox (Home Assistant), I will need to unplug then re-plug my USB Bluetooth adapter in order for VBox to see it? I can just simply close then reopen VBox and I will need to unplug and replug. any way to fix this issue so I do not need to do this?
Host is Win 11 HP EleitDeskPC
VBox is us to date, working fine other then that.
I installed my copy I still had of Windows XP Service Pack 3 for running old software I loved from my younger years and found my resolution is capped to 1600x1200.
Is there a way to tell WinXP via Virtual Box to at least run in widescreen? I know it's possible in WinXP as it USED to be possible. I at LEAST want to run at 1280x720 so I can scale it exactly 2x for clean pixels. IDEALLY at 2560x1440/1600.
I tried to Google it, but I couldn't find my answer. And heads up, I'm a noob at this. I'm good with tech (I'm in college for game development, lol), but I'm unskilled with this.
For reference, I'm using VirtualBox 7.0.14 r161095 (Qt5.15.2), running an install of a vanilla WinXP Service Pack 3 and nothing changed in VB outside of the specs for the virtual machine to my recollection.
