For pre-1980 or so TV shows -- but not the usual Lucy or Gunsmoke reruns. This subreddit is for the ephemeral TV programs of the pre-VCR era -- the stuff no one ever expected to see again: newscasts, local kiddie shows and horror movie hosts, live TV dramas, game shows, soap operas, teen dance parties... Oh, and kinescopes. Lots and LOTS of kinescopes.

Before there was Barretta, there was Toma (1973).

In 1973, a new series debuted on ABC chronicling the exploits of Newark, NJ detective Dave Toma. Tony Musante, who played the lead role, didn’t want to be typecast, so he left after a successful first season. The writer brought in Robert Blake to replace Musante, but they realized they needed a different concept for Blake. Hence, the series was rewritten as Barretta.

'A Cold Night's Death'. Robert Culp & Eli Wallach are scientists experimenting on chimps at an isolated lab in the frozen mountains, & strange things are happening... Classic horror-chiller (literally) from the golden age of the TV-movie (1973)

Things I learned from Barney Miller

(1) New York's biggest criminal demographic is middle-aged character actors.

(2) To people of Japanese descent, all white people look the same.

(3) Detectives frequently cross-dress for sting operations.

(4) Detectives, rather than squad cars, are frequently called on to attend routine incidents.

Anyone got any more?

Screencaps from what is perhaps the oldest made-for-TV cartoon, featuring a weather-predicting lamb and an advertisement for Botany Crinkle-Proof Ties (1941).

W/the eclipse coming I've looked into various adaptations of Twain's 'Connecticut Yankee'. 'Tennessee Ernie Ford Meets King Arthur' was a TV version in (1960). The credited director was, I kid you not, Lee J. Cobb.
