For pre-1980 or so TV shows -- but not the usual Lucy or Gunsmoke reruns. This subreddit is for the ephemeral TV programs of the pre-VCR era -- the stuff no one ever expected to see again: newscasts, local kiddie shows and horror movie hosts, live TV dramas, game shows, soap operas, teen dance parties... Oh, and kinescopes. Lots and LOTS of kinescopes.

In 1973, a new series debuted on ABC chronicling the exploits of Newark, NJ detective Dave Toma. Tony Musante, who played the lead role, didn’t want to be typecast, so he left after a successful first season. The writer brought in Robert Blake to replace Musante, but they realized they needed a different concept for Blake. Hence, the series was rewritten as Barretta.
(1) New York's biggest criminal demographic is middle-aged character actors.
(2) To people of Japanese descent, all white people look the same.
(3) Detectives frequently cross-dress for sting operations.
(4) Detectives, rather than squad cars, are frequently called on to attend routine incidents.
Anyone got any more?
