1940’s Crochet Hot Plate Pads

Vintage crochet hot plate pads that I inherited. Most likely full of asbestos, which apparently didn’t affect my cousin. She lived to be 107.

Advice with using multiple threads at once

Hello! I'm new to this forum, but I love vintage patterns, especially hats. Well, in theory, anyway. I finally got the courage to try out some of my first, but I need advice before I begin.

The pattern I'm looking at is calling for two balls of Knit-Cro-Sheen, which I believe is equivalent to a size 10 thread. That said, it's asking that I use four strands at once. I've knit and crocheted with multiple strands of yarn before, so no big deal, but for yarn, all you do is find the inside end and the outside end, and you're good to go with two strands right there. How do you do that with thread when it's wound up on a cardboard spool?

Also, what substitutions do you like for Knit-Cro-Sheen? The size 10 threads are a little floppy, but maybe if I crochet tightly enough...?

I found a trove

I'm going to post pictures of the individual pieces later, when I figure out what to put them on to bring out the designs but here is a pic of them just draped over a chair. These were accumulated over years from estate sales, which I don't do any more for fear of bedbugs, They had been in a bag in the trunk of my car and I had completely forgotten them. Maybe sewed together they could make a lacy curtain or something.

So happy to have found you all

Hello dear likely minded crafters, I have a YouTube channel where I share my makes, recently I was asked to join a collaboration with four other channel creators: where we each pick a decade to share a few inspired projects. Each Monday in October we each share our makes. 5 decades, 5 projects each.

I was thrilled to join in the fun, I live near Berkeley Ca the home of the Lacis textile museum and gave always had a allure to the historic aspect of the fiber arts. I started my discovery by visiting the museum and picking my decade 1920's the lite hearted party of prosperity. I found an incredible amount of historical patterns and even a crochet hook stamped by M.E.F (mary e. fitch a successful lace pattern designer) Made of celluloid. I even found a pattern magazine on ebay.

The other decades chosen were 1940, 1950, 1960's Iv been able to collected a few magazines from each. Its incredible to me how far our amigurumi techniques have come. Some were downright creepy!

and the much more recent 1980's
which will be fun because Iam an 80's baby and remember crocheting with my grandma ! I remade a pair of f sneaker slippers that my grandma and I made for Christmas to gift everyone in our family.

I have really enjoyed all of your posts and comments and look forward to contributing to this fantastic community thats been created thru passion for the craft.

~Take care everyone.

Question about pattern

So I'm a newbie but I want to try out vintage patterns and I am making this sweater: https://freevintagecrochet.com/print/97

However I'm already having troubles understanding the pattern but I don't want to give up just yet. In row 2 it says: 1 sl st in each sl st and in ch 1 at end of row (an increase). Repeat last row always increasing 1 st in each row until there are 83 (85, 87) sts counting the turning ch as a stitch, cut yarn, turn. With G hook ch 10, with No. 13 hook ch 14 (15, 16), then work across the 83 (85, 87) sts, ch 14 (15, 16), change to size G hook and ch 11.

How is ch 1 an increase? I'm confused as to how it's supposed to increase, and does sl st in this case mean slip stitch or single crochet? Because I have no idea how to increase with a slip stitch. Sorry if these questions are stupid but I'm just trying to learn!

Am I being a grifter?

I have inherited a ROBUST lot of vintage (1930's to 1990's) crochet magazines and patterns. I was thinking of reformating them, and size-grading the garments, and selling them on Etsy. Am I being a grifter, by taking a resource that is not mine and redistributing it, or am I doing something useful? I am just looking for a way to make an extra couple of bucks a month since life has been so expensive lately. I just have this sinking feeling that I'm doing something wrong, but I do see some creators talking about people who do this with vintage patterns and that they love it.

I love reformating patterns, I am plus size so I do this frequently. I also have a toddler so I am frequently doing this to patterns the other way as well. I love math, and this is something I enjoy and I do for free for fun anyways. I would love some input before I make the effort.

Animal pattern

Several panels like this were connected to make a bed cover with matching pillow cases. Museum pieces.

Museum crochet

Here is a table cover that was donated to a local museum. Peacocks, I wish there was more of the pattern showing.

Does anyone know what working over a double strand of yarn means in vintage patterns?
