I've had to take a year off from cycling to work since my daughter goes to daycare near my work (and I can't safely bike her to work). Anecdotally, as I drive by/alongside bike paths, I've noticed that they've been keeping up with brining and salting (at least in Burnaby). How have things been during this cold snap?
Edit: Forgot to say clearly it hasn't rained in a while, but usually in the mornings in past winters it's still been frosty and slick on some places (thinking Willingdon Overpass specifically).
My tire caught a giant screw along that stretch yesterday evening.
Also consider investing in steel tire levers that won’t break at an inopportune moment, and props to the resident between 10th and Windsor that stopped to ask if I needed tools.
Hi I'm aware TransLink has rack and ride demo stations but I don't live near one in Langley. Does anyone know what length of bike could fit on a translink bus front bike rack? I have an ezee expedir I'd like to try
TIA
I'm not a fan of the cold and wet but I'm hoping to get an early start in the cycling season this year. I can somewhat tolerate the cold but I'm most afraid of is slipping on wet/frozen roads.
When do you guys usually start biking for the year?
Did anyone else have the experience this morning that both 10th and 11th were closed? There was a big fence across 10th at Glen so I went up to 11th even though there was no detour sign like there has been past days… but 11th was also closed and the workers went off at me for trying to cross on sidewalk? Super disappointing from CoV that they think that’s a safe approach to doing roadwork on a major bike route
Flying in on business right now. Been trying to but a $100 used bike on Craigslist to ride around on and just leave s "free" sign on when i leave. Then I got the idea that if I can find a bike shop like bike farmer in Wisconsin, I could just buy a used bike and sell. It back and it would be cheaper than renting a road bike for three days
Update: I ended up renting from English bag bike rentals. It worked out great. Next time I'm not bringing my helmet and borrowing one of theirs
Hey y'all,
Had the unfortunate experience of a dent/crack in my not-super-used Ksyrium Elite rear wheel.
Wondering where/what people recommend going for grabbing a reasonable 700C wheel to get myself back on the road? Looking for under $200, rim brakes, compatible with 10 speed 11-32 cassette, and 25mm tires. I primarily commute but send the occasional century ride.
Hi I'm looking to get the best basical knowledge about mechanic bicycle. If is cheap better lol. I'm planning to try some bike touring at some point this year. Thanks.
Hey Vancouver Cyclists!
I’m looking for advice on etiquette when buying bikes from local stores. Over a year ago, I got an entry-level road bike and a trainer from a local shop that carries well-known brands. They were super helpful and made the process easy for me as a new cyclist.
Since then, I’ve been cycling a lot and recently decided to upgrade to a higher-end road bike... and after checking out other stores, I returned to the same shop because of their great service. I ended up buying one of their mid-to-high-end models and some accessories.
The staff, especially one senior member, have been fantastic throughout my journey - answering the many questions I had as someone who hyper-focusses on their hobbies, updating me on seasonal discounts, and helping me find two bikes I love.
I'd like to show my appreciation in some way that would be meaningful - and not awkward - for them. So I'm wondering - are monetary signs of appreciation common/appropriate in situations like this (and if so, what's a ballpark). Alterantively, should I stick to something like a glowing Google review?
Love to hear your thoughts!
I hear people mention it now and then, but as a frequent user of 10th Ave, I've never actually tried it.
How does 'Off Broadway' between Woodland and Arbutus compare to 10th Ave, and is it worth trying out for a change of scenery?
They were very polite, thanked me for reporting it and said they would send out a bylaw officers as soon as possible.
My topic about the truck parked in the bike lane on Pacific 3 days ago got over 180 comments; although most were brigading trolls and bots. I am interested to see how many this one gets!
I haven't ridden west of Volunteer Park on Pt Grey road, but last time I noticed a lot of leaf and tree debris on the separated bike parts. I haven't reported it yet, so could someone who rides that way take a look?
It was particularly bad in front of the Yacht Club and Tennis Club. Looks like the grounds crews just blew it all off the sidewalk onto the bike lane.
New Separated Bike Lane at Kits Beach is basically finished except for some signage & stenciling that will have to await better Spring weather before it can be painted on the paths.
Other then that it looks pretty darn good already but it really should have been extended along Ogden all the way to Chestnut street.
With a full moon and fresh, dry weather, I'm thinking about some nighttime rides.
Any suggestions for routes or locations that are particularly good for riding at night? I like 20-50km loops around vancouver, north Richmond, Spirit Trail in north van, etc.
Thank you for taking time to read this post. Hello! I am looking to connect with witnesses to a bicycle accident I was in on the 900 Block of East 10th Avenue, between St. Catherines and Windsor Streets in Vancouver, please. Please circulate this post if someone in your life mentioned witnessing a bicycle accident, even quite a while ago. The accident occurred in the morning on Saturday, Sept 30, 2023. Yes, that date is correct, not a typo.
Although East 10th Ave is designated by the City as a bike route, the road surface is in terrible repair in that block with multiple partial patches, pot holes, and heaves, you get the point. After riding all spring and summer without incident that day I used a different route for my bike ride and did not know the road was in such bad repair. Now I know to avoid it altogether. I was not hit by a vehicle nor pinged by a door, the information is the poor state of the road surface caused my bicycle tire to stop turning, I became airborne, and was injured from impacting on the roadway. Thankfully I am recovering, kudos to the trauma team at VGH. We've found the person who called 911 and the person who cared for me before the ambulance arrived to take me to ER. From them we know there were other people who witnessed the accident occur. Unfortunately the ambulance team does not record the name and contact info for witnesses at these types of events. It was an intense crash so likely this is not an event witnesses would lose track of among the events of a busy life and might even be traumatic to bring back to mind. I'm sorry that my request may bring this back to mind if you had pushed it to the side. I was injured, yes, and I am recovering. My spine and brain are fine. Thank you for taking time to read the post and respond if you might be a witness; thank you also for passing along this post to someone in your life who mentioned witnessing a bike accident. I've ridden bicycles for decades and this is the first time I've had an accident.
I joined Reddit to post and try to find witnesses. I've posted something similar in a few places trying to help bring visibility to this request. If there is a better subreddit to post on then please do let me know. Thank you.
Yesterday afternoon. It seems like people are using bike lanes as loading zones and temp parking more and more frequently. Has anyone reported people doing this to bylaw officers before?
Getting new marathon 38 tires, brake pads, shifter and rear brake cable replaced, + a basic tuneup for ~$400. Does that seem about right? This is also just a post for anyone getting something similar done, so this is the estimate at Bicicletta.
Long story short, experienced a lot of pain and discomfort from my saddle, especially on my trainer. Had to take a hiatus from cycling to recover.
I would like to go for a saddle fit and curious if anybody has any recommendations and what to expect? Do they use something to measure my sit bones?
I want to get this right, because I would hate to have to give up cycling due to the pain/injury.
I’ve been riding gravel for a few years now and I’ve been thinking about getting into some events/races. I’m just wondering if anyone has any good suggestions/experiences in BC for getting started. I’m not looking to be a hardo and win any races lol I just want to get out there enjoy the scenery and finish. I’d say I’m somewhere between a beginner and an intermediate rider. I knock out 40-50km rides pretty easily and I’m currently working on my endurance so longer rides start to feel just as easy on the bod.
Thanks for the info and suggestions 🍻
I’m from the Bellingham area which has great riding but is pretty lean on group rides. Any suggestions for welcoming clubs in the Van area that provide a variety of group rides with effort options (including moderately hard) and potentially both road and gravel options? Hopefully that description narrows it enough for helpful recommendations….
I'm from Mexico and this year I wanna do some bike touring or packing with my girlfriend. It's been a dream for long time so we"ll do it this summer. Basically I need all your tips, recommendations and routes.
One of the main points is obviously to enjoy the beautiful landscapes and nature in B.C take some photos and get the necessary experience to continue planning these adventures.
Is it still currently closed?
Hello fellow Vancouver cyclists!
I'm a local artist and avid bike rider, working on a project inspired by the bikes and routes we all love here in BC. To bring this vision to life, I need your help!
I’ve put together a quick 9-question survey to learn more about the types of bikes people ride, how you’ve personalized them (both practically and aesthetically), and your favourite routes—whether it’s a quick jaunt or an epic ride. There's even a spot to share a GPX file, Strava link, or other route info if you're into that!
It only takes 2 minutes to complete (maybe 5 if you're sharing a route), and your input will directly inspire some bike-themed art I'm creating. 🚴♂️🎨
Thanks in advance for helping a local artist! I can’t wait to celebrate our amazing bike culture through art. Here's the link: [ Bike Survey ] It's a Google Form, but I'm not gathering emails, but you might need to sign in to complete the Google Form.
Ride on,
my trek fx does not fit on a wheel on trainer due to the thru-skews, the only smart trainer it would mount on is the direct drive and marketplace is $600+…. was trying to stay within $250, 300 max as i would with the wheel on ):
