This is a place to share ideas that could be of tremendous value to society or a group of individuals, but that we just do not have the time or expertise to execute on our own. Have a great idea that you would to put out in to the world? This is the place to do it.

Could your idea promote meaningful positive change for others? Is it reasonable enough that one or several redditors could potentially put it into action? Then post it here!

Posters: Once a redditor has committed to putting your idea into action, edit your post to reflect that your idea is "In Progress" and provide contact info of those who are getting started. That way, interested redditors can collaborate to work on your idea rather than unknowingly working independently on the same project.

RULES:

This is not a place to promote projects that are closed to new collaborators.

This is not a place to solicit funding. Funding requests should go to /r/kickstarter or similar communities.

You may submit ideas originally proposed elsewhere, but you must credit the author of the idea and submit a link to the original post.

Since choking on a hot dog is the number one choking hazard couldn't we just put a hole in it or spiral it...even with a casing?

Novel social MMO to promote donating to charities

So, basically the idea is to make a video game/virtual instillation that unlocks new areas and abilities in the game to incentivise donations. Basically, the game would have a bunch of different content to be unlocked at different thresholds of donations.

The initial idea was something like World of Warcraft (but much smaller scale) where new activities would pop up as money is raised. For example, if someone were to set up a game for a mental health charity, they could set different goals to work for, such as unlocking a raid instance, a pet companion, or a virtual dark ride.

Admittedly, I don't have a clear idea of how to work this out (I'm not a coding guy), but I think it would give a cool way to raise money for a good cause.

Music filtering by common, song-specific elements that aren't easily captured by genre or even artist-level filters.

Examples: growling/screaming, female/male vocalist, some instruments with really distinct sound like accordion or horns, strong bass or heavy focus on bass (would be of use to deaf people), strong vocals or heavy focus on vocals, lyric language(s).

How to implement? I'm a dummy, I really don't know if there's a better way than users of a music listening app volunteering to tick boxes. I'm just posting because I like metal but I wish I could filter out the songs with screaming. (If my idea is stupid because there's a name for that subgenre pls tell me because I don't know dick about music.)

Reddit should have option to search in the comments

App should have search option for comments section. There is lot more to reddit comments than post itself.

Hotel chains should give you the option to tip housekeepers as an add on to your bill.

I never have cash and would be happy to add a few extra bucks to my bill if it went to the housekeeper(s) of my room. When they email you your receipt or if you check out in person (idk if people still do that) just have the Uber option to add a tip.

Amazon should remove recommended items from the same category once you make a purchase for products with a long-term lifespan (i.e. home appliances, musical instruments, etc.)

A feature in music streaming services to permanently blacklist specific songs from playing.

i.e. if you absolutely hate a certain song or artist, song reminds you of something you don't want to remember, overplayed and now you're super sick of the song, etc.

Pewdiepie should create his own Youtube like platform without the strict rules of youtube. This way most of the community will shift to the new platform. Also, the other part will shift to the new platform too because most content creators shifted.

Live traffic monitoring to reduce accidents?

Considering the number of high resolution satellites and the ubiquitous GPS tracking, we could potentially have live traffic maps in the future that are better than Google maps. These could provide live locations of each and every vehicle on the road as points and if these locations are monitored by the car computer, it could reduce traffic accidents especially on blind curves, darkness or sharp turns. Does anyone know if such tech already exists in some basic form?

Make a documentary. Fake an illness and seek help by practitioners of alternative medicine. Document how long it takes until they send you to a real doctor while your illness gets progressively worse until you die.

More places (I’m looking at you movie theaters!) should install nets in between seats to catch things falling out of your pockets.

Share Gaze with other people with AR glasses!

I was watching the stars and I envisioned a future where everyone wears Augmented Reality (AR) glasses. I thought it would be awesome to have a functionality to share where one looks (eye tracking) with another person. This way I could look somewhere and say "look, theres the little dipper", and the person would see in AR where at the sky I was looking. What do you think, and how far off is this?

Ban fastfood commercials. Promote healthier alternatives.

Banning fastfood commercials from TV, radio, billboards etc. and replacing with healthier alternatives, promoting a more sustainable way of eating. This will hopefully lead to a higher demand of e.g. green food, and lower the meat demand.

Time Houses

It's well known that people with Alzheimers respond well when they're put into environments that mirror certain earlier decades with which they were familiar when, like the 1930's, 1940's or 1950's. Create zones where people with Alzheimers can be comfortable in surroundings that mirror those decades.

Reveal your wage to to equal colleagues to reveal any possible gender wage gap

On the off chance you're unknowingly in employment where there is a wage gap, reveal your wage with oppositely gendered colleagues who you believe should be paid the same as you - any differences can be reported to HR or your employer.

Someone should make a bot that converts any www.amazon link to a smile.amazon link.

Deploy it in all the big subs to start. Everyone who clicks is prompted to join the Smile Amazon charity program instead of being directed to the regular site. We could make a BIG difference in MANY lives. I've been donating to the ASPCA since this program began. Too many people don't know and just post regular Amazon links to reddit all the time. Sadly, I don't have the programming skills.

If someone can make a bot that read my user name, knew what it meant, and then emailed me a pic of Kasie Hunt saying "Based on your user name you'll probably enjoy this," someone can make this happen. And yeah, that's a real thing.

Amazon should offer a feature to password protect certain purchases inside your account.

My wife and I share the same Amazon account, which makes it impossible to purchase Christmas gifts (or gifts in general) on Amazon without spoiling the surprise. You should be able to set a unique password in the purchase confirmation screen, and the "Orders" screen shouldn't show password protected purchases.

Companies should tell people their wages are the post-tax amount because people would be happier and less motivated to commit tax fraud.

This would require companies to request a W-2 before an initial salary offer, and Im sure there are other complexities Im not aware of or thinking about. Still, the benefits would be tremendous. People woupd not focus on how mu of their income they are losing, which triggers loss aversion. Peoplr woupd focus less, in general, on how much they are paying in taxes and therefore would be happier with the money they actually make. Plus, as someone who thinks the government has a critical role to play, I like that people may have more willingness to support welfare and public works programs, but Im sure many people will disagree with the value of that aspect.

Give the gift-card to yourself for delivering pizza.

A the mall in my town the mall will give 10 dollars mall gift-cards if you buy 50 dollars worth of other store specific cards. If one type of card is for Dominoes and I work there, then when I deliver the pizza I pocket the money and pay for it through the register with the gift card I got from the mall. In the end for every 50 dollars I deliver I make an extra 10 bucks. Hows that for a plan.

An app to give people new perspectives on life. (Big Project - Help wanted!)

Hey guys,

I'm a UX designer with a strong interest in psychology. I wanted to make an app that would help people break free of their limiting beliefs, especially the things that are interfering with their happiness.

The basic premise of the app is to get people thinking in new ways. To help anyone struggling with or obsessing over a problem, to step back and be able to reframe their view on life by simply opening the app, witnessing some content, and then resuming their lives with a new frame of reference.

It would be a large undertaking, requiring the aggregation of content, building out a ranking system, possibly a community, etc..

If anyone would like to hear more or any programmers / content creators would like to join me, please send me a message or write something in the comments below!

Make a runner's app that not only records time and distance, but also tells you how far you have to go back in history for you to win a gold, silver, or bronze medal in an Olympic event

Found here. This is actually a great idea, and would motivate a lot of people to run.
