Best grad photo spots on campus?

Hey, i’m feeling discouraged bc i forgot to take my grad photos before they closed the fountain by the library. What are some other cool spots on campus to take grad pictures this time of year?

How much you pay for rent?

Curious to hear what everyone pays for rent close to campus. Especially those that rent a room as part of a larger home.

Heads up for F-1 International Students, you should be investigating CPT and summer internship opportunities now!!

Many of you might know this, but many also might not! If you are an F-1 VISA international student and will have completed 2 semesters as a full-time student by summer 2025, and you are planning on working during summer 2025, it is a VERY good idea to start looking at internships now as well as considering applying for CPT. You may want to look for jobs on campus for this summer, and that is perfectly fine, but please be aware that they are extremely limited. The majority of on campus jobs are active during the fall and spring semesters, not during summer. If you need employment during the summer, you should not rely on getting an on campus job, or at least it shouldn't be the only option you are investigating. If you are wanting to do an internship that applies to your classes / major, then you should be looking into CPT now and looking for internship opportunities!

CPT stands for Curricular Practical Training, and coming straight from the CIE website, it is "authorization for F-1 students for off-campus work experience." It's pretty much the only way to get authorized for off campus work prior to graduation (as after graduation you can apply for OPT, Optional Practical Training). "CPT eligibility depends on your individual situation and program of study. CPT may be authorized by CIE after a recommendation by your faculty/academic advisor and a review by the CPT review committee." Also, "CPT is available before program completion, while post-completion OPT is available to students who have completed their program."

It can be intimidating to look into, but I highly recommend checking out the CIE website that discusses CPT and you can always reach out to the CIE office with questions. Disclaimer, I am not a CIE employee and I am not an expert on this subject. The CIE employees know MUCH more than I do! I'm just doing my best to communicate information I learned about recently as it seems like many folks don't know about summer internship application timelines and how you should start considering CPT early!

Data Science undergrad

I’m a sophomore doing comp sci right now, thinking to switch my undergrad major to data science. Is anyone currently doing undergrad data science or has done it before? If yes, can you tell me how it is?

Idk if I should continue doing BS comp sci and then do MSDS. Or if I should switch to data science in my undergrad right now? 🤷‍♀️

who’d be willing to be interviewed for my Planning You Major, Career class ??

Hello redditors of UWM,

I have come on here to beg 2 lucky people who have majors/are working towards a career in graphic design or being a musician (need a person for each) for one of my assignments for the class?

As far as I’m aware, I just need to have a little chat with you and ask some questions related to your career path.

which i will probs just do over email as I’d rather not do an in person interview.

so if any people could dm me if interested !!!

Anyone know how to look at this webpage for UW Flex option?

I want to start looking into enrolling in the UW Flex option for IT. I am curious if I am reading the following page correct (https://flex.wisconsin.edu/degrees-programs/information-science-technology/#tuition). Is the tuition for the All-You-Can-Learn option ($2,250) per semester, year or is that all you have to pay for your entire bachelors experience? Same with the other option (single option / $1,125). I would find it hard to believe a person can take 60 credits to earn a bachelors degree online and only have to pay $2,250 to take all of the courses.

Best free electives

I have one more free elective left to take this coming spring semester, just curious if anyone has any ideas of what to take from previous experience. I’m looking for something preferably with a light workload because I’ll be spending most of my time dealing with my major’s required courses. If it’s online even better. Thanks guys

Graduation Tickets

Hi guys I’m looking for an extra 4 tickets to this Decembers graduation. If any one has any they’d be willing to part with please let me know. If you’re wanting to sell them I’m only willing to do on campus meet up/transfer since there are so many scammers on this page.

Late Night/Early Morning study spots?

Are there any 24-hour spaces on campus where I can just bring my laptop and do my homework? I'm an early morning commuter and none of the buildings are open until like 7 now; I used to sneak into the NWQB building through the unlocked door by the police department, but they started locking that door and now I have nowhere else to go.

It's really frustrating having to just stand around and freeze my ass off for an hour because I don't have a car and arriving on campus at 5:30 in the morning is my only option with my current living situation.

L&S International requirement class recommendations?

I have to take one more non-language course and I'm having trouble deciding on what to take. I'm hoping to end up in a class that isn't too demanding so I can focus more on my other classes.

Scholarship

Has anyone actually got scholarships from the UWM portal? I've applied to a lot of them and my major is nursing. I don't know anyone who's actually received a scholarship from them.

Everyone should Check their voting status.

There was a record number of early votes and mail in votes this year, but many of those have not been received.

  1. Go to Vote.org
  2. Look up your state
  3. Check your voter status online

even if you voted in person you should check your guys status.

Some mail in votes may take up to 45 days from the election to be counted, but keeping an eye on these is important. This means they may take till dec 20th.

Otherwise these are where you should head to:

https://www.justice.gov/voting

https://www.justice.gov/voting/voting-rights

866-OUR-VOTE (866-687-8683)

As well as local election officials

Edit: added more information

Meal Deals?

Seems like tons of restaurants(mainly fast food) are doing meal deals as of late. What restaurants close by campus have some good deals going on through the week? I’m looking for anything, pizza, burgers, wings, etc… Just looking to save some money but enjoy a meal. Thanks

Can you request a roommate of the opposite gender?

I'm asking for a friend who recently got accepted that will have to sign up for housing soon. She wants to know if it is possible to roommate with a boy. Im already living here in the sandburg dorms and I haven't head of anyone doing this. I assumed it wouldn't be allowed, but when looking to sign up for dorms she said she didn't see any restrictions on requesting a roomate related to gender. Does the policy maybe vary based on which dorm building or what floor? I know some floors are all female. Any info would be appreciated, thx

Graduation tickets

Hi everyone, I'm trying to get my hands on at least five more graduation tickets and would be incredibly grateful if I could get them. I'm willing to pay. As a first-generation student, this is a big deal for me and my family.

I’m looking to bring my car for the holiday season and don’t really want to buy a permit through uwm. I understand I most likely won’t be able to park within a block or two of campus and am okay with walking. Please help

Motorcycle parking options?

I am transferring to uwm for the spring and would like to commute on my motorcycle there when the weathers nice. Is there even anything on campus that has motorcycle parking spots. The reason I ask is because when I visited campus for transfer visit day I noticed that one of the signs in the parking garage they had us park in had a sign that said motorcycles weren’t allowed.

Sexual Assault Training

Does anyone have the link for the mandatory training for incoming students? I’ve checked email plus junk can’t find it. I emailed the office for a link a week ago and they still haven’t gotten back. I imagine it’s busy. But I don’t want any problems registering for spring classes

Enrollment?

Hey guys, might be a dumb question but I'm a freshman so it's whatever. I'm looking to add my classes for spring semester to my shopping cart in PAWS before enrollment so I can get it done quickly day of, but there is no button to add it and nothing online is helping me. I'm in the Honors College, so I get early enrollment if that changes things. Just thought I'd ask here before emailing my advisor, so I don't look dumb to her lol. Anyone else know what's going on and how I can fix it? Thanks!
