WCC BIO 101 and lab question

I'm thinking about switching to WCC next year and I noticed that most of the online classes require you to take exams in person. I was wondering was this a requirement for Concepts of biology(BIO 101) with lab and is it proctored ?

EECS 492 experience/advice,

I’m doing the EECS LSA Minor (biology major) and was trying to figure out what to talk as my upper-level elective. I’ve narrowed it down to either EECS 492 (intro to AI) or EECS 493 (UI Development)

I haven’t taken (and don’t plan on taking) linear algebra, so I don’t have too many options.

Does anyone have any advice/experience with 492? As a bio major (0 CS background prior to college) currently in 281, do you think 492 is doable?

I know 493 would be an easier course based on its atlas course profile) but I’m neither interested, nor will I ever use in UI Development.

Any advice/information is appreciated!!

Why were all posts about that illegal Chinese voter locked?

It is weird... Is it politically sensitive?

update:

Thanks to all commentators caring about the election. What I'm gonna say has little to do with the election, but feel free to continue.

I'm a Chinese international student actually. I posted this because I witnessed a comment saying that Chinese students are stealing US technology.

I wanted to contradict that, but failed to add new comments.

Look, let me speak my mind here. I just cannot imagine how prejudiced that guy is against China and Chinese students, so that he can link these two unrelated issues forcibly.

AND, if you want to talk about spy, let's treat China and the US equally, and I can give you a bunch of evidences indicating that both countries are stealing something from each other.

If you target students, the fact is we students study here legally, and we are free to make use of what we are allowed to learn here. We comply with the laws and regulations. We don't steal.

If you like us Chinese guys, let's communicate and contribute to a better world; if not, compete with us like a man of honor.

Transfer advice: how do you like campus life?

I’m looking for any and all opinions here, so be brutally honest. I’m a current freshman in my first semester at msu. I’ve always wanted to attend umich, but didn’t make it off the waitlist for this school year. I was thinking of applying to transfer to start next fall semester. I thought I’d like it at msu but so far I’m not feeling it. I don’t have a car and I find the campus boring. I don’t drink or party, so I really have a hard time finding things to do on campus and I’ve had a hard time making friends. What is campus life like and what is the atmosphere of the college of LSA? What do you regret, wish you had known sooner, and overall how do you enjoy your experience? My boyfriend, some friends from hs, and one of my brothers are currently living in Ann Arbor and it’s a bit closer to home than Lansing, but my mom does not think I should transfer. If I get accepted and decide to transfer, I’d be interested in the biopsychology, cognition, and neuroscience major or just something bio/chem/psych related. The cost is roughly the same for each school. Any and all advice is appreciated!

Ph.D student here, reminding you all to vote!

Hello fellow Wolverines!

I’m a Ph.D. student (and perhaps your TA 👀) reaching out to everyone I can. With the federal election around the corner, it’s our time to step up. As I'm sure you all know, this vote actually matters and impacts the big stuff we talk about on campus – from climate policy to student loans and everything in between.

Just a reminder that you can register to vote right up until Election Day, so if you’re a “last-minute” type like me, they’ve got you covered! Whether you’re voting for the first time or you’re practically a pro (because you're old like me), grab some friends, hit the polls, and let’s make it count for Michigan.

Go Blue, go vote – let’s make it happen!

How does financial aid at UM treat out of state students?

Some OOS students have told me they received a more generous financial aid package from UM than from other private universities.

But some OOS students have also claimed that the FA office gave them less than they deserved, and that FA is given preferentially to in-state students.

What is UM's approach to OOS students applying for FA? Does it just depend on how badly the admissions office wants you? (Grades? Special achievements? Whether you fill a certain diversity category?)

I don't know what major to choose help lol

Hi, I am planning to transfer to LSA in the fall of 2025.

One problem, I do not know what to major in or even what job i want in the future. Noteable classes I've enjoyed in the past have been: cultural anthropology, sociology race and ethnicity, spanish, and art classes.

I am leaning towards the international studies major with either the CCI or ISNC subplan. I like learning about culture, sociology, psycology, anthro, and spanish. The issues with this is that I don't know what job/internship route I would go. Plus, I am a pretty socially anxious and introverted person, and from what I've heard this major can be pretty strenuous in that way. For this reason I am really unsure about this major.

I also might enjoy majoring in anthropology with the sociocultural subplan. Maybe using this degree I could eventually become an archivist which is pretty solitude work which I like.

Other majors I may like are: sociology, linguistics, arts and the ideas in the humanities, spanish. But again, job prospects are like ?? so idk.

Honestly the best financial option would be doing an economics major. I'm good at math and have taken up to calc 2. It's a social science so it might be interesting to me. The job prospects are good.

All we really have is the present, and I would really like to spend my next few college years learning things that I enjoy at least for the most part. I am still worried about the future though lol so I would appreciate any advice, guidance, or things to look into?

EECS 492

Is anyone else finding this class more difficult than expected? This class has a reputation for being easy but I’ve been nonstop confused this entire semester. It also feels like concepts are explained really unclearly. Is anyone else feeling this way or do I have a skill issue?

Survey - Residents, landlord/property manager, developer, or city planner

Hi, One of my friends is looking for inputs via a survey. I would appreciate if you could take this survey. Also please forward it among by your friends🙏🏽🙏🏽

Dear Friends,

My team and I at Ross School of Business, UMICH are working on our MBA project for the State of Michigan's Office of Future Mobility & Electrification (OFME) on EV charging infrastructure in multi-dwelling units (MDUs) like condos, apartments, and townhomes. The lack of charging access in these types of housing could prevent broader EV adoption. The findings from this project may impact state policy and be shared with key decision-makers, including the Governor.

If you're a resident, landlord/property manager, developer, or city planner involved with condos, townhomes, or apartments, can you please take one of the short surveys below (about 15-20 minutes). You do not need to be an EV owner to participate — your input is invaluable!

Please also share this message with your friends and family.

My (non-standard) Experience at UofM Engineering, from a former student

In response to being asked to fill out a Petition for Reinstatement. Just my experience living on and off campus for four semesters during the onset of COVID with a non-standard brain. This is for everyone else on campus struggling with their mental health. I remember hearing the train going thru AA every morning wondering if another student had been lost to it, and when my time would come. Not ashamed of the fact I “flunked out,” I’m happy to simply be alive.

Thank you for your email. I’m not certain if it was sent in error, as I haven’t been able to return to campus since being placed on Mandatory Leave. However, if you do remember me, I’d like to express my gratitude to each of you for the support you provided during my time at UofM.

With the dedicated help of several doctors, my family, and my care team, I am finally in a place of recovery. I now have a better understanding of why I was struggling so much and why I always seemed to need a bit of extra support.

I’m currently in the process of being diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder and Autism. I somehow managed to go 19 years without knowing this, even while attending one of the top schools in the state. I spent so much time comparing myself to others in this highly competitive environment, which led me to a state of despair—at times, even questioning my own survival. It turns out that taking things at my own pace was always what I needed.

While I recognize that it’s not the University’s direct responsibility to manage students’ health, I’d like to encourage you to consider ways to support those who might not “fit the mold,” whether mentally, physically, or otherwise. Students like me—who have also earned a place in this university—sometimes just need a bit more time, support, or a slightly different approach to learning. When I had more space to work at my own pace during COVID, I maintained a cumulative 3.35 GPA. While there were several factors in play, this experience suggests that a bit of additional support can make a big difference.

With all that said, I do not intend to return to the University of Michigan for my undergraduate studies, in any capacity. Aside from my talent, passion, technical knowledge, and real-life experience doing nearly all things “music,” I’m not confident that UofM could fully accommodate my non-standard learning needs, even with specific adjustments for my sensory challenges. With the full blessing of my family, I plan to pursue my degree and musical studies abroad or in the great city of Detroit.

Thank you again for your efforts to support me through my struggle. Even if we didn’t meet in person, I deeply appreciate your help during my time at the University.

Best regards, CCM

Is Michigan Stadium actually sinking?

Last spring I heard the wildest thing from a friend in civil engineering: Supposedly, Michigan Stadium has been slowly sinking into the ground over the past few years. It’s like half an inch every year, but apparently there’s been enough of a shift that some kind of “ground stability project” is underway to keep it level.

Initially I didn't think much of it. However, I moved into an apartment near the stadium this year and have noticed GroundProbe vans parked outside pretty frequently (usually on the S. Main St side) They'll set up what looks like measuring equipment every now and then, some of which goes into the ground. The workers are usually in white hard hats with plaid button-ups and jeans, taking readings with iPads. The whole thing seems a bit concerning, but maybe the school dosen't want to alarm anyone or make it a bigger issue than it is.

Has anyone else heard about this or have more information?

How likely is it that I will get a double room to myself this winter semester?

My current roommate is study abroad this winter semester, and so I was just wondering how likely is it for her space to be filled? We are currently in North Quad, and to be frank, having a double to yourself with an ESA would be much preferred than a smaller single.

After a year hiatus, I am excited to bring back the Fat Squirrel Photo Contest!

Previously inspired by the posts on this subreddit and the Katmai National Park Fat Bear Week, this contest pits the chunkiest squirrels from around Ann Arbor in single elimination bracketed community polls voted on by you!

This year, the polling will take place on Instagram instead of Twitter and I have set up a dedicated page for posts and submissions: https://www.instagram.com/umfatsquirrelweek/ Please send over your pictures and how you would like to be credited and make sure to come back and vote for your favorite squirrels starting the week of Thanksgiving.

Best of luck and I can't wait to see your best glam shots!

Pictured below: the final poll between Branch Squirrel (L, 37.5% of votes) and Diag Chunk (W, 62.5% of votes)

Second place winner, Branch Squirrel, submitted by zach_perna (p.s, I still have your Joe's pizza! Reach out to me!)

The first place winner, Diaga Chunk, posted by eekobroom

why is it so hard to find medical related jobs here LOL

I applied to the temp position on Michigan Medicine, and none of them had ever gotten back to me. Not to mention, even trying to find job for work study is so hard T-T dont even get me started on on those professional frats either.

I just wanted to use my CNA certification and actually build my resume for med school. Other hospitals aren't even an option for me as an OOS since I don't have a car.

Any advice?
