All about Ultima, the greatest RPG series of all time!
This subreddit is primarily about the single-player Ultima series, so please direct posts about Ultima Online to /r/UltimaOnline, unless they also apply to the broader Ultima universe.

found this cool new shard! It's rpg inspired with classes, custom skills, and the entire map has been reworked.
Its still in the making, will have beta tests very soon
Long story short, I just started the game... and I mistunderstood how the anhks worked. I thought each mantra you discovered was a permanent upgrade. I then realized it is how you level up, and I spent points all over the place.
I would like to avoid starting over, but I also found the mantra corresponding to my build last. That's how I found out it was for leveling up - when I couldn't do it right when I wanted to the most.
Hello,
I'm trying to get the original Sound Blaster Pro effects with Exult and Ultima 7 the complete edition. With Exult I am only hearing "bing-bang-bongs" when opening doors and such. I can hear the digital speech but not the synthesized sound effects.
I installed the All-In-One Audio Data pack for Windows but it doesn't change anything. I don't see any option for Sound Blaster in the audio menu.
My EA Ultima7 non-Exult plays the original sound blaster effects by default.
Can anyone help me get the original sound blaster music and effects while using Exult?
Thanks
Hello! In my friend group, a meme has emerged that Swen Vincke from Larian Studios doesn’t actually care about Divinity or Baldur’s Gate. His real life goal, apparently, is to create the perfect Ultima (XD). Jokes aside, though, I noticed the first Ultima is available on GOG for a very low price. So, I thought, “Why not?” I’d genuinely like to buy it and finish it, but let’s be honest—some games are better left in the past.
I’m unsure whether the first Ultima is one of those games that feels too outdated or if it still has something unique to offer. Is it worth checking out?
I actually ask them to stay home since it's quite annoying when they get stuck behind doors and I have to backtrack when I'm doing quick exploring. I bring the whole party out if I sense I'll be doing a big dungeon or cave and need the inventory space for a haul. It also helps that I don't have to stop and feed them so much.
I .... miss the old days. When wandering around Ultima IV's world- I could put in any disk (or if I was really clever I could have made various sectors written to the same value) and find out what that got encoded to.)
Which meant treasures everywhere, trolls evereywhere, and a couple of spell castings to 'displace' me I could be back to normal.
This stuff none of you will ever experience unless you had a 512kb floppy.
... I miss those days.
How do i turn on the music? And is there an in-game reference for key commands?
Last dungeon was horrable
That boxes were dragons.
Dragons are everywhere
I've seen so many dragons that now even sharks are cute.
Falling magma and demons....
and....at llast
I made it....
It has taken almost 35 years
It's much more touching than I thought.
I still can't get over it.
It's a masterpiece that still gives me this kind of emotion in 2024.
Oh no! I tried launching exult on my ipad today and got the message “This beta isn't accepting any new testers right now.”

I can’t figure out who is maintaining it, otherwise I’d just email them. So, posting here in case anyone knows!
Edit: Already fixed!
When I try to add them they don’t save. Any ideas?
I am trying to follow a walkththrough and do a quick play through of this game. The walkthrough is PC version and I am playing C64.
I'm level 4 Fighter but when I enter the town of Paws the Reflect Suit is not available from the armorer? Any idea why?
The aircar is also not available in Transport.
Any help or suggestions are appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Here is my Soundcloud playlist of many Ultima tracks, remixes, covers, alternate versions. I've been trying to include every Ultima track that exists on Soundcloud for the most part.
If you have a track on SC that isn't on my playlist, let me know anytime and I'll try to add it. I've stacked a few iconic ones at the top though - Master Boot Record, Ragnaroek. Skip the ones you don't like. Ewwww, Rule Britannia??? What is this, CE 1700?? Give me the STONES.
Ultima has a lot of people out there covering the music and putting their work on YT, SC, Bandcamp, and so on. We actually have a pretty active scene even now. New remixes come up on YT even in 2024.
In the past, a few of us in the Ultima Dragons were trying to meticulously track covers of Stones in particular, then we started in on YT Playlists.
Unfortunately YouTube Search is trash tier so it's hard to locate Ultima track covers there, then a lot of people set private or take down videos after a while so the playlists empty out over time. There are a few standout tracks that only exist on YT, same for SC, same for Bandcamp, so there may never be one true master playlist of cool Ultima tracks - unless you, the person making your own versions of Ultima music, put your Ultima covers on Soundcloud, probably the least annoying platform for this.
If you have covered or remixed or archived some Ultima music that isn't on the playlist, hit me up and I'll put it on there. If you're putting your tunes on Bandcamp or Youtube only and not on SC, I'd like to encourage you to put tracks on SC as well. SC Pro is pretty cheap, to get unlimited uploads and to get access to monetization options. (For the record anything I upload on someone else's behalf is not monetized by me.) Some artists put their tipjar links in the description box under the track - I recommend doing that if you're proud of your work, whether or not you're using Soundcloud Pro. If you have your Ultima tracks on a record that is for sale, you can set it up so that SC can play a preview free and then ask people to either buy the track or access it fully with a SC Premium sub, which gives you a cut. There are a few artists who have put Ultima tracks on albums and sold a whole bunch of copies and a few of them put those tracks on SC free because they, like the rest of us, are old enough to remember the crowdsourced shareware internet.
If you happen to know a musician who has done covers and they exist on another platform, see if they'll give you permission to upload them, or if they will. Then let me know, I'll put it in the list.
If you're part of an Ultima game remake project working on a soundtrack or you're putting covers or remixes in your Ultima-like indie game, I'll take those as well if you're willing to put them on SC. If you intend to sell your game soundtrack, what some folks do is put up 1 cover track free on SC and the rest go onto Bandcamp or wherever else. There are diverse options out there.
The goal with the playlist is archival, not to deprive anyone of royalties or cause problems for rights holders. We want musicians to have control of their music, and we want to be able to share their music with the community if they allow it.
Hit shuffle if you like. The top of the list is stacked with some bangers though.
Had this ol thing kickon around for a few years, decades, whatever; times are tough, I'm about to sell it on eBay for 50 bucks by look of things in like an hour
Idk, thought it's neat
Yesterday, I finally did the leap, got on GOG, and downloaded Ultima 4 (and ealier today, I downloaded the Worlds of Ultima entries too). Here's my biggest nitpick as a beginner; typing "thanks" when you talk with an NPC only gives you the "That I cannot help thee with" prompt. To be fair, it's my first playthrough (and besides videos on the series, my first time I played one of the games); didn't expected to use the arrow keys even (I expected more that you type the first letter of the direction; n for north, e for est, etc).
Still cool to play a piece of gaming history. Will be glad to complete it eventually.
Hi, is it possible to play the Ultima 6 remake for Exult in german language? Sir John made this wonderfull translation for normal Ultima 6, is there a way to use it in exult?
It works quite well. Obviously you can’t beat mouse and keyboard but the steam deck’s robust and easy to use custom controller scheme system helps.
I have mouse clicks on the left and right triggers, map/spellbook/inventory on the face buttons, L1 for toggle combat, R1 to pause combat.
Movement on dpad or left stick, right stick for mouse position and right trackpad for finer mouse control.
Left touchpad is a radial menu with feed, target, try keys, lockpick, notebook and open save menu.
I’ve saved a community layout that any deck owners can use or use as a base, simply add Exult.exe as a non steam game and rename it to Exult and you should be able to see it under community layouts.
I think in likely to continue my run of starting this game and not finishing it but it was fun to set up and it’s always a great time playing VII. Can’t believe there are still so few games where the world feels as alive as this game from 1993 (noir detective game Shadows of Doubt does it well) and to me the graphics are still beautiful.
Do you guys like Larian? Sorry, no reason to ask.
*flies away*
I seen that apparently xu4 allows you to insert custom sprites into the game, but i cant find any information on how to do it. Is it possible?
Over the past weeks, I played through Ultima Underworld for the second time. My first playthrough was over 30 years ago, but even after this long stretch, I'd remembered many details particularly as I encountered them in the game.
After finishing my second playthrough, I'm confident there are a few things I never would have figured out, if not for having remembered them. Specifically:
There are other relatively-banal items I remembered were important, and thus kept them (or recorded where they were) when I found them. Examples are port, the flute, the strong thread, the recipe for rotworm stew (which looks much like one of dozens of useless scrolls throughout the abyss). Had I not known (or in my case, remembered) which items were important, it seems like I would have had to document item locations very, very extensively as I played, particularly as it's not possible to carry much due to encumbrance.
Given details like these, I wanted to ask if any folks actually beat this game with no hints whatsoever in their first playthrough? If so, how?
I was listening to the Richard Garriott interview where he was discussing how one of the revolutionary (at the time) things about Ultima V was that there were permanent changes, such as one major companion to the Avatar being permanently killed. He mentioned it was someone that was with the Avatar from the beginning but he (or she) was killed permanently, and I was wondering, who is this person?
