Truman ranked #1 public school in Midwest region

This ranking (for regional schools) was issued by U.S. News and World Report and marks the school’s 28th year in a row to earn this distinction. Congrats, Truman! 💜 https://newsletter.truman.edu/article.asp?id=38696

What are your thoughts on the gum tree(s) on campus?

Hiya, fellow students/alums! Without delving into why I'm asking this question (as to not sway your answers), would you guys mind writing up what you think/thought about the tree(s) covered in gum on campus?

Events this weekend

Sounds like there might be some fun things to do in Kville this weekend.

Truman’s IG page posted about a new student welcome on the square on Sunday: https://www.instagram.com/p/C_iqK_bxEbn/?igsh=MTg3a2pzcTVhcjliMg==

And it looks like the annual Whiskey & Turkey Festival is Saturday evening. Obviously the whiskey is 21+ but the turkey legs are all ages! https://www.kirksvilledailyexpress.com/stories/downtown-kirksville-whiskey-turkey-festival-set-for-sept-7,19796

Plus, like weather should be gorgeous for a trip out to Thousand Hills State Park! ☀️

Enrollment down?

I graduated from Truman nearly 25 years ago. I had a good experience there and look upon my years there fondly. When I was enrolled, the school was absolutely at capacity and you were lucky if you were able to get a room in a residence hall. Now I am seeing that enrollment is down under 4000 and some of the residence halls are at lower capacity or closed. Conversely, I am reading that Mizzou, MO State and Missouri IS&T are all seeing record freshman classes. I would love to hear some opinions on why Truman is not fairing as well as the other MO schools at a time when high value / low tuition should have Truman turning people away.

New School Year Traditions

Just saw a video of Truman students celebrating the new school year with a "new year's eve ball drop" on the quad and I thought it was cute. It made me reminisce on my first week back in 2018 and curious to hear your experiences, from new students and alumni!

Some of the highlights that stick out to me:

  • The college cup was a lot of fun from trivia to field games, and I remember being furious that MO Hall lost :(
  • For some reason, our Truman Days experience was Hamilton-themed, which made it quite awkward if you hadn't seen the musical
  • Mocktails out front of BNB and a glow stick dance party on the quad
  • Going with my entire dorm floor to the new student welcome at the town square and getting lots of free stuff

What was your first week like?

How do I check meal swipes?

Sorry if this has been asked before, I downloaded the everyday app but it didn’t show me swipes. Do the meal swipe officially start after Truman week or is it through a different app/website? Thanks for the help!

What type of detergent does the laundry use?

Odd question, I know, but I’m a freshman moving in soon, and I just want to make sure I can use the laundry machines correctly. Do the machines work with liquid detergent, or do they need like the pod detergent?

Can you test out of language requirements?

Just like the title says. I am going into my junior years, and am a Bachelors of Arts student. I speak Japanese fluently due to my family being from there, and I transferred in credits for JAPN 101 and JAPN 102. Can I just take a test to complete the 201 and 202 requirements instead of wasting time and money on those classes?😅. Thanks

Rules for pets

Hello everybody. I’m going to Truman next year for college, and I had a question about pets. I know Dobson is the pet hall and that the website says that fish are allowed in all the halls, but does anyone know anything about the categorization of hermit crabs? They’re not technically fish, but they live in a fish tank, so I’m not sure if they count. I texted my admissions counselor about it, but they have yet to respond.

How is the food?

I recently got accepted into Truman for the 2024 year, and I was wondering if some students currently at Truman could tell me how the food is. I’ve heard mixed reviews from people I know, so I was wondering what people here could say

TruView Email Down Again?

I haven't been able to get into my TruView email since Saturday.
My password is current, my browser is current, my internet connection is solid, I can load other sites without issue, I can log into other Gmail accounts without issue, & I can log into TruView itself without issue.
ITS has no recent announcements about Gmail issues.

Is anyone else having this problem?

What’s the nightlife like in Kirksville?

I haven’t been able to checkout the nightlife in town due to having to work on nights. I like to try it out but I’m curious to know what it’s like.

Looking For a "Backup" Roommate

I've already talked about this in my bio on the Truman roommate portal, but this seems like a pretty niche situation, so I figured I'd post about it here.

I'm really hoping to get a single-style dorm because of misophonia and sensory issues. Even though I'll be put into the first room selection time slot (I did my housing application the first day it opened), I understand there is a good chance that there will be no singles left for me by the time I get to select my room. The issue is that you have to have accepted a roommate in order to select any double or triple dorms, meaning that I won't even be able to choose the double that I want if there are no singles available. I'm looking for another incoming freshman who's in the same situation as me. That way, we could quickly accept each other as roommates if neither of us is able to get a single room.

If you're a girl hoping to get a single, please reach out so we can get to know each other and hopefully become "backup" roommates! I'm not going to be picky!

Any advice or information on academic fraternities?

Truman is one of the colleges I’m considering attending, and I want to at least try to join a frat in order to help with the social aspect of my life, so I wanted to get an inside scoop on the different fraternities Truman offers. I’ve tried looking on the website and at the different descriptions, but I wanted a more personal answer.

How common is it for people in their 30s and 40s to attend Truman?

I'm only asking because I'm a 25 year old guy living in Kirksville and who's working in a job outside of my field of study (Welding Technology) since graduating and earning a 1 year diploma in it back in 2019. I couldn't find a job that has a good enough pay for an hour's commute form here and moving is not an option for me right now. I'm now working as a custodian in town for the time being until something in the welding industry or anything else related to my field comes up.

There's a part in me that tells me that maybe I go try to go back to at school at Truman for their business administration program so I can try to learn how to maybe start up a small manufacturing/metal fabrication plant at the industrial park in the Kirksville area so some of the welders who live here can have a place where they can work close to home since a majority who live here travel for work. I also thought about maybe trying to start up a welding and landscaping business in the area too if I were to do that. However, I'm also mildly autistic and I know that Truman is a very complicated school. So I don't know if Truman is the right school for me.

My question is though how often do 30 and 40 years old go back to school at Truman for a change in career plans or a career change? Also, and a little unrelated to my question, how good of a school is Truman to for autistic people? I would to know.
