A place to discuss retinoids including tretinoin / retin-a, adapalene, differin, tazarotene, and trifarotene (NOT retiNOLs or Accutane). Stay moisturized!!
This sub is a place where people come together to talk about the safe and reasonable of use tretinoin (Retin-A). Tretinoin is a prescribed topical retinoid used for acne and anti-aging. Tretinoin is well known for accelerating skin cell turnover and infamous for its lengthy purging period. It is also very drying to the skin. Tretinoin is definitely not for everyone.
If you are taking tretinoin as prescribed by a dermatologist, have taken it in the past, or you are simply interested, you are most welcome!
Feel free to use this sub for all your questions and concerns. You can rant/rave all you want, no shame =) Support for our members comes first, not tretinoin.

How to layer snail mucin, multi peptide and tretinoin micro 0.025%? Which one one should come first?
I am 6 weeks into using .025% tretinoin. My goals were hyperpigmentation (bad melasma) and anti aging. I slowly over the 5 weeks worked up to every other night application. (Started ever other on week 5). I normally have very dry sensitive skin.
Should I adjust or add anything thing to my routine? Routine:
Night:
double cleanse with jojoba then cetaphil gentle.
neo genesis skin serum, wait 5 mins
tret .025% alternating nights with hydroquinone, wait 30 mins.
vanicream daily.
vanicream in tub before bed.
The jojoba oil cleanser and the LRP sunscreen are relatively new to my routine too (within last 3 weeks)
So I posted a few days ago regarding my Tret breakout. I stopped and it’s been a month. But since then I have a huge zit which is a bit deep. My new derma recommended to use adapelene on that zit only and let it do its work. Now I am afraid since my wedding is on Jan and I might just end up getting more acne (purging) from it.
How am I supposed to add this? Is it a good idea to ignore for now and let my skin heal on its own?
Note: I used prescribed Differin 6 years ago and used only for 1 year, my skin was the best for 5 years until general breakouts began. But I was prescribed antibiotic for a week with Differin to kill my hormonal acne.
I’ve heard that for oily skin the gel version is better I have pretty clog prone, oily skin on my forehead but I simply can’t get the gel anywhere in Ireland. First time using it so I have no reference.
If it’s simply going to clog my pores rather than clear them out is it worth using or should I stick to a lower % retinol instead?
Everyone is recommending this one from LRP as their HG for moisturizer in the PM. I tried it, but it’s so thick and greasy, I hated it. Used it once, never again🤣.
Now I’m looking for a replacement for the PM that is soothing as well and works great to still the skin. I get a lot of redness from the tret and have sensitive skin. Looking for an elegant formulation, one that moisturizes heavenly, but without the thick and greasy texture. I hate vaseline and balm too for reference. I generally love Asian products
I just started tret 0,025 6/7 weeks ago. And use it up to 2/3 times in the week, because I hate the redness. I already have a sensitive skin so, it makes my redness so much worse that I’m taking it really slow. I dropped all other actives for now and focusing on tret. Not much peeling or purging luckily, it’s just the redness that bothers me. Have combi to oily skin.
I just bought the omega water cream, like the formula a lot, but the smell is gross (so using it up for now). It’s skin moisturizer is fine, but the texture is too thick and doesn’t settle in fast, leaves a film for my liking so replacing both soon.

Hi! I just got prescribed 100 mg spironolactone daily along with a sulfur wash and tretinoin 0.025%. I’m wondering how to move up to nightly tretinoin/time frame. Any advice appreciated. I thought i read a thread that you shouldnt drag out the process for too long or it prolongs the purge?
Routine AM: Sulfur wash Hydrinity Hydri-C Moisturizer Face Reality Mineral Matte SPF
Routine PM: YTTP Kale + Green Tea Spinach Vitamins Face Wash Tret (1-2 times per week per instructions, then work up to nightly) Hydrinity Hydri-C Moisturizer
What are your recommendations for a very sensitive skin that's also acne prone (combination skin)? I'm in the EU.
I'm currenty using paula's choice youth-extending daily hydrating fluid spf 50 but I notice it causes a very slight redness.
Quick question: I’m using tretinoin 0.05% from highstreetpharma and loving the smooth skin vibes, but I wanna start using an AHA (like glycolic acid) to really get that glass skin look. But I’ve heard mixing these can be like playing with fire.
Anyone got a foolproof method for using both without torching your face? Should I alternate nights, or is it safe to use them together if I space it out in my routine? I’m tryna keep the glow without the burn, so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
Sometimes before bed, I am too lazy/tired to get up and wash my face. Last night, I didn’t want to skip my tret, but I was too tired to go down and wash my face. I decided, what the heck, just gonna put it on without washing. I applied the tret to all my usual areas, then my moisturizer. Anybody else done this? Can you advise? Obviously it’s not something I want to do as a regular practice, but do you think it’s worth it? Will the tret still be as effective?
Context - it's been around a month nd a half of using tazarotene and I haven't been seeing much difference. I'm also high on my hydration, skin barrier care whilst on this. I forgot to wash my face one night and BAM, the next morning I had burning, itching, sensitive broken skin. So I stopped using taz for around 5 days now to heal my barrier and my skin has broken out in small closed comedones. PLEASE ASSURE ME, these are only formed because of irritation and will slowly go away itself even without taz.( Sorry for the weird angles, I wanted to be able to show my skin in different lighting)
Can I wear makeup during the day and then remove it and apply differin on night time? My derm said avoid makeup at all costs because it blocks the pores. I need to wear makeup for work and there is no objection about it I have to wear it. I have used differin gel before during my teenagehood and I worry about the peeling and dryness. How do I tackle the dryness/peeling during the day? I worry it peels over my makeup at work god I have so much anxiety
differin adapalene gel 0.05
Am: Rinse face Lrp double repair LRP sunscreen
Pm: Gentle cleanser Tazarotene 0.1% LRP double repair
Can i Use “Simple Kind To Skin Refreshing Face Wash” with tretinoin 0.025
Hi guys,
I want to order Tretinoin from alldaychemist. I'm from France, but I don't see any European countries on the list.
hi everyone. i am starting accutane early december. i have been on tret since march. should i continue my normal routine of using tret 2 nights on 1 night off, or should i slowly ween off until i start the accutane? does it matter, like will it effect my skin if i ween or dont? they gave me no instructions about this at the derm. thank you!
Hello
I’m interested in incorporating a serum, specifically the Regimen Lab Wave Serum 2.5 into my routine after reading a lot of positive reviews
Here are the ingredients:
Aqua, Acetamidoethoxyethanol, Glycerin, Hydroxyethyl Urea, Pentylene Glycol, Methylpropanediol, Betaine, Panthenol, Asiaticoside, Madecassic Acid, Asiatic Acid, Xylitylglucoside, Anhydroxylitol, Xylitol, Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate, Xanthan Gum, Sclerotium Gum, Lecithin, Sodium Acrylates Copolymer, Triethyl Citrate, Lactic Acid
Would it be safe to use this serum before applying Azaelic Acid in the AM? And what about Tret in the PM?
Also wondering if peptides are okay. For instance, the first aid beauty peptide/collagen serum (bounce boosting serum)
Thanks in advance!
Ordered $90 last month using credit card. Not received within 3 weeks very unusual. I emailed them and they said they're having many shipping delays now not just me. I And theyyl refund if I want but said to relax and wait
They're legit ordeted meant times products legit and company trustworthy. Anybody else experience this lately?
Hi! I recently went to the dermatologist and I got 0.025 tretinoin cream. He told me to use it every other night. I also got prescribed metronidazole cream for my face as well but for the morning. Should I follow this routine? Or should I start once a week or something for the tretinoin and do the “sandwich” method. What are your reccomendations? :)
Hi everyone!
I will start using differin cream 0.1% and i'm searching for a thick, soothing cream for the days my skin is a bit more sensitive.
my dermatologist recommended Bepanthen the one in the tube but I feel like its too light for me my skin already itches without using anything what do you think?
I'm in my 30s my skin is dry & sensitive with cyst-like breakouts / whitehead on my chin area and these are the brads I can get where I live.
So I was using tretinoin all over face 0.025% and only had irritation around mouth/marionette lines/chin area. I went on holiday so thought to give it a break. I haven't gone back to it but it's still red and bumpy in these areas? Also very dry above the lips. I think I only applied it ONCE (not thinking) in that above lip area. Is this normal or could something else be irritating the skin? My skin is not usually sensitive.
Hey everyone!
A bit of context: I used Arazlo for about a year in 2023 to treat my hormonal acne (mostly around my chin). I’m 27, and I've been dealing with mild but persistent acne for over 10 years, which got worse in my early 20s. I feel like I’ve tried almost everything, but nothing really worked until Arazlo. It significantly reduced my acne, but I kept dealing with side effects even after a year: peeling skin, redness, burning sensation when I applied moisturizer, etc. I introduced Arazlo really slowly, even cut back on the frequency when it got too intense, but the side effects (especially the peeling) stuck around. I started with the sandwich method, but after reading that my skin might not fully adapt, I switched to applying it before moisturizer. I always made sure to keep my skin well-hydrated (first with Toleriane Dermallergo Nuit, then Illiyoon Ceramide Ato Soothing Gel, and occasionally LRP Cicaplast Gel or Balm as spot treatments) and wore sunscreen daily (Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen at the time).
When I came to my dermatologist with these issues after a year, she recommended I reduce it to twice a week, but even then, the peeling didn’t stop, so I finally decided to quit. Fast forward to now—my acne has gotten worse in the last two months for no clear reason (I stopped Arazlo six months ago), and my doctor suggested I try it again but adjust the frequency based on how my skin responds.
So I’m here to ask:
- Has anyone had a similar experience?
- Any tips for reintroducing Arazlo into my routine? Specifically looking for advice on frequency, tolerance build-up process and application techniques (like before or after moisturizer, sandwich method, etc.).
As a reference, here’s my current routine WITHOUT Arazlo:
- AM: Water rinse, then Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum (I might try the LRP Mineral Tinted Ultra Fluid Sunscreen soon).
- PM: LRP Caring Wash, (sometimes SKINFOOD Royal Honey Propolis Enrich Essence), then Illiyoon Ceramide Ato Soothing Gel (and occasionally LRP Cicaplast Gel or Balm to help any healing acne).
Thank you so much!
1.5 years ago, I started using tretinoin with a Dermatica subscription that blended multiple actives into one formula. I started out using .025% tretinoin / 4% niacinamide, then moved on to using .05% tretinoin / 4% niacinamide. Within the last couple months I switched to using Tretinoina Same .05% (Italian tret), which I’ve been layering over Finacea at night. It’s been working well.
I noticed Dermatica offers a blend of .05% tretinoin / 4% niacinamide / 15% azelaic acid that I’m interested in, in order to simplify my routine further. I’m wondering if there’s any issue with a formula that has multiple actives, vs layering actives (like finacea and tretinoin) on top of each other?
I have sensitive, combination, acne prone skin with very mild rosacea. I don’t currently have acne - I primarily use AA and tret for redness and anti aging, and to also prevent any acne from forming.

If I start using tret 2x a week at .025% and have oily skin (48 years old) would you recommend I use the gel or cream version?
I am planning to try the sandwich method of applying it that helps to note.
Hi, I started using tret 0.25 2 weeks ago and I’m experiencing some flakes when I put on any sort of liquid makeup. Ive tried oil cleansing before applying, gently exfoliating with a washcloth, intensively moisturising, applying primer and trying setting spray. Ive tried skin tints and mixing oil into my foundation. No matter what I do theres still flakes but my skin doesn’t feel dry.
One thing I have tried is just putting on my pressed powder to make my face less shiny and it didn’t seem to stick to my flakes but it didn’t actually cover anything just made my skin less shiny.
I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for powder foundations I could buy in the UK that covered at least some redness.
I've been using .025 cream tret for about 6 weeks now and am having a major issue with skin congestion that I had never experienced before. I am developing so many closed comedones as well as regular pimples (which I had expected for the purge stage). Is the skin congestion normal? Prior to tret I would use niamacide which I think helped prevent this but I have stopped using it when I started tret to minimize my routine
AM routine Vanicream gentle cleanser Peach slices snail rescue toner Peach slices snail rescue oil free moisturizer Neutrogena clear face 50 sunscreen
Nighttime routine same but tret every 3rd day minus sunscreen
I also have been reincorporating a BP face wash on non tret days
I have been thinking about giving up on the tret not sure what to do :(
Hi everybody, I was hoping to get some advice from you guys regarding tretinoin and RetrinAL 0.1 Intensive Cream from Avene. I am getting confused as to how I should proceed. My main concern is anti-aging and not acne.
First a bit of background : I am 39. I used Adapalene for a few years on and off, eventually I built up to 4-5 times per week. I switched to RetrinAL 0.1 Intensive Cream from Avene last year and I have been using it ever since, everynight. I did not see great results from Adapalene for anti-aging and I found it annoying because it was drying out my skin, hence the switch to the Avene product which is a retinaldehyde.
Now, I would like to see how I get along with tretinoin. I used it today for the first time at 0.025% which is the lowest I can get where Iive. I did the sandwich method. My plan is to go for once per week the first two weeks, then if that goes ok, up it to every 3 night etc. etc.
My dilemma is the following: Since I have been so pleased with the effects of retinaldehyde on my skin I do not know whether I should continue using RetrinAL 0.1 Intensive Cream on the nights that I am not using tret. I have zero side effects from it, it has been so great for my skin. I am hesitant to just drop it and switch to tret only and potentially get all kinds of crappy side effects that would wreck my skin for who knows how long and consequently prevent me from applying anti-aging treatments in that time. I am wondering if I should use it like an overnight mask-treatment a few times per week and use the Avene product on the other nights?
Is there anyone here who has gone through something similar and can advise me on this? It would be much appreciated.
