Sid launches his own toy brand, Sid’s Kidz, at just 17 after dropping out of high school, he saved up enough money to buy his first computer and made an eBay account, becoming one of the first custom toy creators to become “Internet famous” or “go viral”, as we say these days! As time goes on, he ends up branching into robotics and learning how to build and program them in order to transform the Sid’s Kidz brand and keep up with the times. Kids want their toys to be high tech and interesting, not boring ol plain Jane- same design from 1942! 🙄
Sid from Toy Story vs Sid from Ice Age sloth 🦥 human hybrid
I've seen a lot of people who can't wrap their heads around this mechanism. The most popular theory seems to be that's purely connected by how children play with the toys. After all, Forky became alive after being played however it doesn't hold on full scrutiny. For instance, there are plenty of toys that were never played with yet are somehow alive, which includes Stinky Pete, all the toys in the supermarket in Toy Story 2, Gabby Gabby etc....So it can't be the only act of playing that grants them life.
The second option is the act of creation or "breathing life" into your creation (or literally anything really). Think about it, when an artist draws a character, they breathes life into them by imagining their personality and life. And humans have the habit of projecting personalities into objects, ESPECIALLY if they look like living beings. This could explain why Forky turned alive after being created by Bonnie and why even toys that were never played by anyone are still alive: ie: it was either their creators that "breathed life" into them by creating them and imagining their personality and life or the people (including kids) who see the toys and "breathe life" into them by imagining their personality. This could explain why Mr Spell is alive despite lacking any antromorphic features: perhaps Andy himself gave him alive by imagining his personality. This could also explain why some toys have "preprogrammed" personalities. Take Buzz, for example. Maybe when he was created, his creators had a specific image of Buzz in their mind: ie: the one from the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command 's show or pehaps kids in supermarkets project this image into him, so Buzz acts appropriately. Once this personality is first given by creator or another person, it's likely that it can't be changed by another person: only through the toy's own development.
There's two potential plot holes I see: first, Forky's behavior. He was specifically created to be a a friend by Bonnie yet sees himself as trash but one possible explanation is that he's instinctively driven by trash due to the origins of the materials used to create him. Another potential plot home is how this could apply to other "living" creations, such as drawings and statues. Drawings of living beings were already shown and yet they're not alive. Perhaps it's because the object needs to 3d to move and interact with their environment and thus be alive. As for statues, I can't remember any instances where statues were shown in the franchise, so who knows, maybe they're alive as well. Same could apply to well, actually any object, especially if it has "antromorphic" aspects as humans are more likely to project a personality into things that look like living things, though exceptions exist such as Mr Spell.
Anyway, what do you think about this theory? Do you see any glaring plot holes? Do you like it? I'm pretty curious to see your opinions on this theory and how you think toys come to life (my child self believed there was an international conspiracy and that creators put some kind of invisible microchips in all toys lol)
It seems to me that in the video of the group Soundgarden the song Black Hole Sun there are noticeable details that could have served somehow to create Toy Story. For example, the fact that the boys use a magnifying glass to set fire to insects or Chris Cornell's T-shirt with a skull. Maybe this can be easily refuted due to the fact that the scriptwriters used elements from life and their childhood when creating the film, for example, Joe Ranft, like Sid, melted the heads of toy soldiers with his younger brother. And if we talk about the T-shirt, Jeff Pidgeon shared information that the skull does not have a specific prototype and was not taken from anywhere.
Even if this is a coincidence in some sense, it is a very interesting detail..
I've been thinking about the implications if "sex toys" exist in Toy Story would and here my conclusions:
Why vibrators can't be alive:
Unlike what many people seem to believe for some reason (possibly as a joke though after reading some articles on this, I'm not sure), there's no way that vibrators are alive. Every sentient toy seen in Toy Story has at least ONE antromorphic feature such as eyes (ie: the toy binoculars shown in Toy Story 1). This is the bare minimum requirement for any "toy" to be alive. Vibrators don't fulfill this requirement.
They also don't fulfill the "imaginative play" function as it's one of the basic requirements to be "alive". Even Ham, despite being a piggy bank can be used in imaginative play of any kind. Vibrators can't be. They're literally objects with only one spefic purpose and this purpose isn't imaginative play (at least the main one).
Why Sex dolls can definitely be alive:
Sex dolls on the other hand possess many antromorphic features. They're literally human-shapped dolls. As shown by Ham and Forky, all objects that have antromorphic characteristics can be potentially alive.
Sex dolls were designed and are used for imaginative play (even if it's for a very spefic kind of play...), so they fulfill this requirement too.
Toys don't have to be played by kids to be alive. Toy Story 2 proves that toys don't have to be played to be alive as toys are shown to be alive in the supermarket despite never being played by kids. Stinky Pete was also alive even if he was never unpacked from his box.
Toys don't have to be child toys. Again, Ham is piggy bank and wasn't intended to be a child toy yet yes he's still alive.
So in short, sex dolls fulfil all requirements to be alive, vibrators don't. So let's hope sex dolls don't exist in toy story universe as the implications would be horrifying.
After long time of not finding stickers that suit the needs for my mod i decided to makeit from scratch using a scan of my buzz's wings for proper sizing and the Kingdom Hearts textures for coloring and shape (thanks u/Crafty_Attorney8664 for the idea).
I know they are not perfect as my editing skills are not great but it's the best i could make.
Feel free to use them on your mods ;)
So I’m about to ask a bunch of dumb questions that analyses the movie lore too deep. I loved (half of) these movies and this is just for fun.
I have a few questions about sentience for the toys.
1: When Sid (syd?) was combining the toys, were both halves still alive? Did he make essentially human centipedes? Or did the head take complete control and the body is just a vessel? I guess basically does sentience reside in the head? (What if the toy doesn’t have a head, like the etch-a-sketch)
2: What if the toy comes with replacement heads/ faces? A lot of higher end collectibles come with alternative heads and faces. So are those all individually aware, or does the face/ head gain sentience when it is placed on a body? (The official or a third party)
3: Are collectibles even sentient? Or does it require the toy to be seen as a toy/ played with? What constitutes playing? (Does posing count?)
4: Why don’t videogame systems have sentience but an Etch-a-sketch does? (Unless they do and I guess are just treated poorly by the other toys)
Anyways I just thought these were fun thought exercises. Also the more I really think about the life of a toy, the sadder and more hopeless this series becomes lol. The toys could still be alive a thousand years in the future, remembering all their kids that came and went.
I recently received the 1999 Interactive Buddies in good condition aside from Woody’s eyes not blinking. How would I go about fixing this? I can’t get into Woody’s head easily, so I want to know the first steps to not damage the toy.
Hi all
Hoping someone can help :) I bought a Jessie and a Woody talking interactive doll from the "Woodys Roundup" range (I believe they were released around Toy Story 4)
The Jessie doll has the "on/off/interactive" switch on the voicebox but the Woody doll does not! I can not find it, can someone help?
See video attached
Thanks so much
Hey everyone Echo here,, toy story fan. Anyways I grew up with toy story like we all have. I was going through my things today found my toy story plushies I wanted to cry because I remember playing with them all the time. They're old now trying to restuff them.
One of my best memories with them are watching movies and build pillow forts. It was just me, jessie, Woody, buzz, rex, bullseye. When the fourth movie came out my buddies had new buds ducky and bunny and so I made new memories with them.
Best childhood ever. Glad i can share this here
I got this toy like 14 years ago but I forgot its brand. This was a dıy set toy. It assembles with plastic key and screws.
Toy Story 1 came out in 1995 over 29 years ago and changed the medium of animation for movies. With Toy Story 2 about to become 25 years old I want to ask what grade you would give this movie.
