toRANTo - Rant and vent about Toronto!
A safe spot for us to rant about things we don't like about Toronto

I tried I really did. I got candy and decorations and music I was excited after years of condo living. I sat outside to greet the kids. I gave up after having 3 negative interactions in the first 10 minutes.
After these 3 interactions I gave up and went inside as what was supposed to be a fun experience had become an aggravating one.
I have fond memories of Halloween as a kid. Have things really changed that much or am I just being a boomer about this (I'm not that old actually)?
Where the frig are all the poppies? It feels like just in the last few years they've pretty much disappeared. My commute today I saw about 3 people besides myself wearing one and they used to be pretty near ubiquitous by this time. I remember reading the poem together in grade school and everyone taking it pretty seriously.
Do people just not give a shit anymore or what changed? It was one of the Canadian traditions I really appreciated.
Edit: I swear we started late October when I was young, it wasn't really considered cutting Halloween because Remembrance Day isn't a "holiday" the same way that is, but I grew up rural so maybe we were just a bit more keen, thanks for the perspective everyone.
I’m not mad about them selling booze in stores. But they removed the freestyle coke machine in order to accommodate it and I can’t get cheap drinks for like 2 bucks now :(. Thanks Dougie
Fuck you for using your phone in a movie theatre. Fuck your fucking addicted ass that can’t stay away from your phone for 2hrs. Fuck you for constantly checking your fucking phone and turning it on during the movie. Fuck you ignorant.
Whoever is using their phones in a movie theatre a huge fuck you to you.
This is for the fucking lady at Scotiabank theatre who was constantly opening instagram during the movie. Fuck you, if you don’t want to watch the movie, get the fuck out.
So there is the upcoming by election in Don Valley West on Monday and I’m volunteering for one of the candidates. I’ve heard a lot of people say, surprisingly more than usual that they’re not telling me who they’re voting for because they believe in the secrecy of the ballot. I get it logically, as you don’t want to spammed with literature or calls and it’s your democratic right. But on the other side of that coin, I feel like you’re basically telling me that you’re not going to support my candidate and I would rather have honesty instead of you saying that to me.
I’ve had a lot of people ask why am I asking who they are supporting because it supposedly violates their democratic rights. Basically, we need to be able to ID supporters, volunteers and movivate people to go out to vote for us to begin with. I was just really irked today because of a convo I had with one lady today, telling me to screw off for asking her this. I asked her politely, so it felt unjustified. Anyway, what are your thoughts on it
Enough! The city needs to do something about the nasty piss smell that greets everyone walking out of Union Station on to Front Street. Why the fuck are tweekers just allowed to just piss right in front of the door with no one doing anything about it? Every commuter, every tourist, every person who comes out of the Front Street doors has to endure the most vile smell and watch where they are stepping. Welcome to Toronto!!
Of all the places that I would think the city would be proud of, especially after spending almost a billion dollars in renovations, it would be Union Station. Spend the extra $150 bucks, buy a power washer, and have some fucking pride in how you present one of the most historic buildings in the city.
There are a ton of people abusing handicap permits, using them as free parking anywhere pass.
I know not everybody with one has a visible issue, but I also know how easy it is to get a pass; I've been offered one for $500 and I know someone who took the guy up on the offer. It took less than 24 hours to have the permit in hand.
It's getting out of control on my street, with people bottlenecking the road and/or leaving their cars parked on the street for days at a time, despite 1hr parking. Look around any construction site and you'll see a fleet of handicap passes parked on the streets around it.
For those who like to read what they want: I'm in no way suggesting people with disabilities should have to overcome hurdles. Nor am I suggesting that all permits are fake. I'm saying there are enough fakes on the streets who are abusing this system and wishing the city would address the issue.
There is a man who sets up his entire drum set at that intersection. He’s really good, but it’s just so unbelievably loud. Having to wait at the signal while he’s playing is low-key the most annoying part of my day - I’m so sorry!
I don’t get why he wouldn’t do it closer to a park or by the waterfront where people are out to enjoy their day and might be more likely to appreciate his talents, or maybe even at Dundas Square where there are other people singing, playing instruments, etc. He’s obviously free to do what he wants, but why pick such a busy intersection when some people are on their way to work and most others are old people with already poor hearing.
No hate, just mildly frustrated.
It’s more rare for them to stop than not.
Year what of no traffic enforcement? 5?
Fucking lawless POS city
about half of line 2 has been closed so far today. the ttc just keeps getting fucking worse. kennedy to victoria park is closed. at least we got a warning about that one. jane to ossingon was closed for over an hour, reopened for a minute or 2 and then closed again from jane until dundas. everything is packed, subwYs are running on sunday hours but somehow still sending empty trains past and making people wair 15 minutes. and on top of the already insane amount of reduced speed zones? can't get anywhere in this city by driving or by ttc and with the amount of construction blocking everything they don't want you to walk either. don't even get me started on the fucking mess that the kipling station exit construction has made, paired with the condo building blocking the sidewalk? this city has become nontraversable, not to mention the ttc charged money for their sad attempt at a halloween fest when in previous years it was free.
I just came back from 1 month trip in Japan. It was nice but I was actually looking forward to come back in Toronto as Japanese culture can be quite oppressive.
I went on a cute sunny walk from Dundas west , passing by trinity Bellwood, to Spadina, then up to bloor street , then west to Christie pit park.
I always thought toronto was pretty clean compared to New York for instance. But I realized and was chocked about how dirty and trashy the street were. There is homeless and drug addict roaming the street like zombie every 2blocks. There is trash all over the floor.
Can we just collectively not throw trash all over our community and can the city take care of all those drug addict send them to rehab or something?
I was used to it before but now I felt the whole city is filthy and really not enjoyable to walk around.
I assume this company had a permit to operate on the sidewalk? But how is this not considered harassment? Some days it's just someone asking, "Hey can I ask you a question?" Other days they may follow me as I walk past trying to ignore them. Several times I've even had these employees jump or move in front of me with a big expressive wave asking me if they can talk to me. I know my experiences aren't unique.
Even the Jehovah Witnesses stay, respectfully, to the side of the sidewalk and wait for people to approach them.
My question is that if it's against the city bylaw for A-framed signs from real estate agents, for example, to place their signs in the middle of a sidewalk impeding the flow of pedestrian traffic, why is it OK for these people to do basically the same thing?
I recently tried to return a Mastercraft 5-Gallon air compressor to Canadian Tire after learning it was part of a safety recall. However, I was told that without my original receipt, they couldn't process the return. This compressor is several years old—like many tools people keep for the long haul—and expecting consumers to have receipts after all this time seems unrealistic, especially when it comes to a safety recall.
This policy got me thinking: should proof of purchase be required to address a safety hazard? Recalls are intended to protect anyone using the product, so shouldn't the priority be making sure potentially dangerous items are removed from circulation?
I'm reaching out to Health Canada to look into this policy, as I feel it goes against the very purpose of a recall. Has anyone else faced this situation? Do you think receipt requirements for safety recalls should be reconsidered? Let’s make sure our safety is put first.
I know I made a rant earlier this year about Canada as a whole, but now I thought it would be time to really tear into Toronto, because I feel like it says a lot that when I go downtown for whatever reason, I just get really... angry inside, which is putting it nicely. Even living in Richmond Hill doesn't make me feel that much better, cause I just.... hate this city so much. Here are some reasons below, some of which are often commonly said among others, while some are more personal to me.
A common complaint, which is horrifically atrocious infrastructure. The infrastructure we have now (healthcare, TTC, roads, etc.) was meant for the population 20-15 years ago, and it would probably take at least 15 more years (which is honestly me being generous) for us to get to the infrastructure needed to support the population and traffic we have today. Special shoutout to the TTC, cause for an alpha city, this transit system is just bottom of the barrel crap. I've been to "lower-classified" cities like Copenhagen and Oslo, and had a shock at how effective their transit systems were. They actually covered a bunch of the city, and didn't experience NEARLY the amount of issues that the TTC does.
Another common complaint, the tragically laughable cost of housing and living. We've basically gone full San Diego at this point, where the powers that be *know* they can be unfair with prices and wages because of how many people would be willing to settle for less if it means being able to live in Toronto. Or in other words "MuH pRoFiT". What's even more insulting is that we don't even have the good weather of San Diego to boot, so it all just feels like we're really paying first class prices for economy services. Oh, and don't forget the taxes which are laughably useless in helping us out, so we're just throwing away our money for what?
A more personal complaint. The status-obsession. I swear it's like we are so utterly obsessed with money and who has it better and just a general "one-upping" culture. Your house design, size, location, and all that stuff has already plagued this city for god knows how long, but that also extends to cars, how many and the kinds trips you can take per year, and just a general "show-offy" nature of trying to be as upper class as you can, even if you weren't fortunate enough to be born upper class. And private school obsessions too which you don't find in a more civilized country like Finland since those are virtually non-existent and thus creates more of a cohesive instead of a segregated environment.
Another personal complaint. My disappointments and long-lasting trauma with social interactions. Now I know it's commonly talked about from newcomers regarding how, despite the international reputation, that Canadians, especially Torontonians, are incredibly passive-aggressive, distant, reserved, and stick to their own that they know since their youth. And while I have certainly encountered many such people despite being raised here since I was 18 months old, it goes beyond just these things. As an autistic person, I was bullied quite a bit in the latter years of elementary school by peers and mostly neglected by adults, which escalated horrifically in middle school where it felt like everyone was against me because of my differences. It didn't get that much better in high school or uni, where I mostly experienced indirect issues with peers and more so suffocating loneliness, which have ultimately culminated in my major depressive and generalized anxiety disorders. This is particularly insulting to me and one of the major reasons I want to (legally of course) move out of Toronto to somewhere more aligned with my way of life, since I feel like a "forever foreigner" despite being raised here my whole life. If I'm meant to be alone and a "forever foreigner", I'd rather be in a place that justifies it, rather than here where If feel constantly pressured to be like everyone else, and hey, maybe find some people who would understand me better. Oh, and the useless healthcare, especially mental, sure doesn't help this matter.
So, yeah, that's my rant, and I'm curious to hear what you guys have to say.
I always keep a long distance between the car infront of me and the car behind me! There is always that one guy who thinks he can squeeeze in to fill the GAP!
At first all the cars are driving at the same speed in my lane so the GAP infront of me will be the same length all the time, I maintain that distance for safety, it may give you the illution that you might be able to squeeze in and drive a little faster in my lane, but you wont! GAPS are there to save my vehicle!
Maintain distance guys! Stop squeezing your car into every GAP you find! beside why are you so desperate! its not like you earn a million dollar every hour!
Location Yonge and Steeles
TLDR: I have video proof my brake lights worked prior to tire change, mechanic disconnected a connector and tucked it away, I have a physical copy of the receipt they wanted to charge me for fixing the lights.
2 days ago I took the car in for a routine tire swap, and a canadian tire mechanic disconnected a connector deactivating my brake lights.
Picking up the car the sales associate told me many of my lights weren’t working.
They stated my brake lights, my headlights, my four way flashers, and my marker lights weren’t working and told me it would cost $300 to fix.
I declined that service and before even driving off I checked my headlights and my four way flashers and saw they worked. So I was pissed they would lie to me but I just drove off. As I got home I asked a random pedestrian if he can tell me if my brake lights work. Sure enough, the brake lights don’t work. I had a strong suspicion this was foul play and began diagnosing my own vehicle.
Bulbs were good, fuses were good and I was stumped. Eventually after an hour of diagnosing I found a connector underneath the engine hood that was disconnected and tucked away underneath an engine conduit. To my luck, after plugging it in, my brake lights started working. This connector had a locking latch on it so it couldn’t have possibly come loose on its own. I got in contact with my condo board and verified by video that at the time of leaving for the tire change, my brake lights WORKED.
This pisses me off because best case scenario I would have gotten a ticket from an officer. Worst case scenario someone would have rear ended me and could seriously have derailed my life.
Decent clothes are so fucking expensive, even in Value Village lately!!! :( Is it just me or their pricing just seem soooooo unreasonable???
Any recommendations on where to find budget-friendly clothes? It just fucking sucks that I need to choose between grocery or a nice jacket! A bit of an exaggeration but you get it lol
This city of 0 law enforcement is exhausting. But Why is the police so god damn useless? Why is it never worth their time and budget to address citizens who get punched in the face, cars that casually ignore laws that almost kill citizens and more bs that we have to deal with?
What the fuck is causing this and what the fuck can we do about this??
this city is FILLED with shit. even if I want to walk down the street I have to look down the entire time to make sure I’m not stepping on some dog (or persons) runny shit that is now going to become a part of the sidewalk. if you or your dog have the shits, AT LEAST GO TO A PARK, COMPOST THAT SHIT. do people here not have the etiquette of cleaning up their dogs business? are people just shitting on the streets? (i already know the answer to this living near Yonge and Dundas)
We had some fun times, right? Raptors won that thing the one time, the mayor of Toronto embarassed us on late night... Oh, remember that party we had to celebrate the black out? Good times.
But I think we both know it's over, it has been for years.
I'd say it's not you, it's me, but I'd be lying. You're a mess, you're hurting yourself and you're hurting the people you say you love. I won't watch it happen.
You're an asthmatic choking on cigarettes, blaming me for his cough. Your kids worked so hard to improve themselves, and you tore it to shreds in a rage. I used to be sad about it, but I just don't care any more: it's clear you're committed to being a miserable asshole, why should I stand in your way?
I'm done. I feel sorry for anyone who stays behind with you, but I'm packing my things. Don't call, don't write. There's nothing left to say.
Somewhat from to my post in r/fuckcars. Really posting this rant in response to Fords anti bike lane shit.
TL;DR: As an urban planning student, urbanist, transit user, cyclist, pedestrian, and yes, driver and road geek, driving in Toronto is scary AF and absolutely SUCKS, and therefore, I LOVE traffic calming infrastructure and anything providing an opportunity for transport other than automobiles!
Let me start by saying I LOVE driving. I especially love going on road trips and driving in rural areas. I’ve been a road/highway geek since I was 10, and still am. However, as I’ve been exposed to urbanism/reducing car dependency and taking an urban planning program in college (currently on the path and with a goal of entering the urban planning field in the future), it’s really opened my mind on what makes a great city, and what doesn’t.
I mentioned I drive, but I’m just as much a transit user, cyclist, and pedestrian, with all having their pros and cons in Toronto. As a transit user, cyclist, and pedestrian, I obviously want roads to improve and become safer and more inviting for people who don’t drive, EVEN as a driver.
Y’all know driving in Toronto is fucking horrible! You could be on the highway, you got people driving slow in the passing lane, swerving across a few lanes because they missed their exit, being in a rush in general, not looking out for other people, etc. This type of behaviour is even worst in the suburbs than it is in the inner parts of the city as the road design enables it! Don’t get me wrong, this happens in the more inner parts of Toronto too, but it definitely happens more in the suburbs. (https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/toronto-dangerous-intersection-map-1.5288295) This link is from 2019, but provides context. You can see that in entire city isn’t great, and there are areas downtown that are pretty bad, but the hotspots in the car dependent suburban parts! (Also, this was before some areas in downtown recived protected bike lanes, which became much more common during and post Covid). You also gotta factor in that many suburban developents are designed for drivers to make absolutely stupid maneuvers, like allowing left turns onto stroads (street/road mix) with no lights. While on the topic of stroads, I can’t not mention the fact it honestly feels like you’re hardly moving on them when driving, as you’re just gonna be stopped at a red light a good chunk of the time, then be driving, just to be stopped at the next red light a few short blocks apart.
This part will be the whole point of this post, but wanted to provide context. I’m amazed at peoples resistance to traffic calming infrastructure or opportunities for other modes of transport, whether its no right on red”, protected bike lanes, dedicated bus lanes, widened sidewalks, reduced speed limits, you name it. As a driver, those things make driving safer (https://trafficlogix.com/how-traffic-calming-works/). For example, when a “right on red” is no longer allowed, I actually think it’s much easier given I don’t have to look for pedestrians, then peak onto the crosswalk, then look for upcoming traffic (going right on green, you still gotta look for pedestrians, but that’s usually it). The reduction of right on red reduces that step for drivers, sure, making a drive slightly slower, but reducing what can be a pressuring method.
I grew up primarily in East York, but have spent a lot of my life particularly growing up in Scarborough, North York, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Richmond Hill, and Old Toronto (family, friends living in these areas type of thing). As a result, I see the “culture” divide of transportation and planning issues in the inner city and suburbs. I think it’s also a bit of a generational thing as well.
I understand how many people think the way they do. Once upon a time, I was like that too. This is a rant sub, and given what I know and what is happening now with bike lanes in Ontario, I have to rant about this.
Between getting shoved, and squished in an overtaxed transit system. These massive fire hazards shouldn't be allowed, not only are they already not allowed but there is zero enforcement of the rules. Another nail in the quality of life of Toronto.
On College street heading west today in the downtown core, was biking home on the bike lane when an e-bike tried to pass me out of nowhere to my left at decently high speed. Their bag hanging off to the side brushed past me and caught me by total surprise, so I swerved towards the sidewalk and basically jumped off the bike.
Wouldn't have an issue normally but this guy literally didn't say anything or make any sound before trying to pass me, and his bike was one of those e-bikes that were built like an actual motorcycle. Really hard to hear them coming since they're pretty silent. How are these people allowed to ride these on the bike lane? There's so many big e-bikes speeding through bike lanes now. Shouldn't they be on the main road??
I don't have any solutions to this, literally just ranting because I think this is a genuine safety hazard.
Was walking east on Wellesley at Bay st and this uber delivery guy is on the sidewalk. It’s rush hour time so there are tons of people on sidewalk. I’m beside a man with a stroller and the uber delivery dude is in front. There’s about 30cm of clearance between the father and I and the cyclist legitimately tries to get in between us to go through. I put my hands up in an accusation so fashion and the guy bumps into me and I push him out of the way a bit. He then continues to get pissed with me shouting like I did something wrong. This happened on the north side of Wellesley and there’s a bike lane just a metre away.
WHEN ARE WE GOING TO SEE THESE PEOPLE REPRIMANDED FOR THEIR CARELESS AND ENDANGERING ACTIONS? TPS I’m looking at you!
Fuck this city.
I was out for a walk today on Queens Quay and was taking a left from the left side of the sidewalk. This guy b-lines it for the apex of the corner which is a fence and water below. We meet at the corner as if he’s trying to make some point and shouts at me “I’m going there!” I stay put completely shocked by this behaviour and tell him that I’m going here and taking a left. The guy looks absolutely crazy (not homeless crazy but just a normal man who is completely lost his mind) and then shoves me back and starts cussing more. I was truly shocked that someone thinks they own the sidewalk like this. Especially since he altered course and was literally walking straight to a spot that I don’t see why he would go so close to the edge.
Here’s and image. I’m green path
Edit: To be absolutely clear. I was ahead of this guy on the left to make a left. You can’t make a left without turning left… 😒. The guy b-lined. If you don’t know what b-line or beeline means, it means to move swiftly and in a straight line. He purposefully sped up to cut me off at a spot that made NO sense for him to be at since I saw him veer right just to cut me off Shocked at how out of touch some of the people commenting on here are. Also resulting to violence because of some personal issues around thinking you own a street is absolutely unacceptable.
Hey cidiots. Apparently, you all need a refresher when a TTC bus is merging from a bus stop you are under the HTA required to yield to a bus from a bus stop! Stop cutting off buses or speeding up to stop them from merging back in; when the bus as the right of way. Passenger tired of you cidiots!
I've been on hold for an assault for 3 hours now. My poor employee was assaulted twice today by a 'customer' and I can't have this person removed from the property without a report (it's property management so this person LIVES ON SITE)
The last staff member that was on-site that was assaulted by the same person waited almost 6 months for follow-up. TPS just got another budget increase and do much less than they used to.
What are us, as Torontonians, paying for?
Edit....words
I’m sorry are none of us worried? Every time I hear someone talk about “how nice it is outside.”. I get more pissed off and angry. It’s supposed to be cool if not cold already. This is not good.
In the next few years snow in the winter will be non-existent in Toronto based on this trend. I’m terrified and you should be too. We should be screaming for help. But all we can do is keep doing our daily thing watching disasters caused by climate change through our phones until we’re finally the ones filming them.
We’re so fucked.
