Single-Cylinder 4-Stroke Motorcycles

I swapped my 1989 Honda NX250 from the OEM carb to a lectron carb due to parts availability. It's way better than it ever was, but I'm having a problem now where, in order to not have it run too rich (stumbling from rich) on the top end, I'm having to run it so lean at the bottom that it idles between 2000-3000 rpm. Could this be fixed with a more free flowing intake?
Please keep your posts related to the "thumpers" name and don't break any rules and don't post anything NSFW,religion or politics.
This is all about our lovely single cylinder thumping motorcycles.
I’m being a bit silly and want to get bigger (21” and 19”) wheels for my Honda FMX650 2006, replacing the stock 17”wheels, so that I can fit dirt tyres and take it off road. The bike has pretty much the same architecture as the XR and NX 650. Where can I find the right wheels? How can I know the hub or brakes will fit right? Is it a better idea to re-spoke the original hub to a bigger rim? Any advice on how to approach this would be greatly appreciated thanks - A DIY Noob
I need a flywheel nut for a 1968 Sears 124 5V. Anyone have or know where to get one? Thanks in advance.
Bike in neutral, turn ignition and no electricity. Easy to see as the neutral indicator light doesn't come on. Obviously electric-start is a no-go.
Battery, fuses, and plug ok.
Bike starts right up using kick, and runs perfectly. When running, there is electrical contact and neutral indicator will show strongly. Sometimes just after kick starting it will show weakly, but hitting the horn leads to a strong connection. Infrequently the bike won't start with a kick (no-nothing) and it'll take a bit of fiddling with the key as I kick before it starts, but that's rare.
After riding the bike for a bit when I turn it off and turn it back on there is a good connection and the electrical start work fine, but if it sits with the key off for more than a few minutes I'm back to square one.
Sometimes it's not a problem at all, there will be a clean connection and the bike starts right up with the electric start, but usually that's only immediately after riding it.
During lunch I took contact cleaner to all the connections I could get to and for about 35 minutes everything was fine, but an hour later back to square one again.
Seems like something is loose, frayed, or something, but I can't seem to track it down.
Battery, fuses, and spark plug are all ok, so it's likely not any of those, and the battery being good makes me think that the stator is ok too.
When the bike is behaving the starter is strong. Runs fine once started with a kick. The horn thing is weird, why would that make the ignition connection better?
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Will the independant UK relax environmental laws just enough to let us get our DR650's? I promise to only put paper in the paper bin and plastic in the plastic bin!
Bottom line up front: 2006 Suzuki DR200SE, fresh carb rebuild and new petcock.
I found fuel leaking from where the carb mates to the air box. No appreciable amount of fuel was in the bottom of the air box.
Differential diagnosis: I pulled the carb and inspected the o ring around the fuel needle (I forgot the technical name for it) and it looked good; with fuel line attached and crock on prime, no fuel gets by with the float held up by my finger. With the fuel line attached, I can't blow air through with the carb inverted. Also, the petcock is new and the carb was rebuilt and tuned last month/ 20 miles ago. I use stabil in the fuel. I also just dumped the oil this morning and no fuel was in it.
So, what gives? Am I paranoid? When I shut the bike off, did some accumulated, unburned fuel drizzle out on the air side of the slider?
Anyone have OEM foot pegs for an sp600, cant really get parts from the suzuki dealer for my bike anymore
Hey everyone,
Just wanted to post up this RM Stator review and XR650R build in hopes that it helps someone out there.
**Who Am I? ** I’m a fairly new addition to the family of dual sport riders. Getting into riding only about 2yrs ago, I’ve loved it ever since and keep bashing myself for not purchasing a bike sooner. A feeling that I cannot let go of. I live in sunny Santa Barbara, CA and love to explore all the vast amounts of terrain offered in and around. I use my bikes as daily commuters and weekend off-road warriors.
**What I Ride? ** My first bike was a wonderful Suzuki DR650SE. Great bike and loved every minute of it, but I constantly had the feeling of not having enough control on that bike. If felt too soft and mushy on turns, power was okay, but I expected more out of a 650cc. Afterwards, I sold the DR and moved over to DRZ400SM. Yes, I know, most of you would ask why I chose the SM model instead of the S. Simple, I found a good deal on the bike and threw on some 50/50 dirt tires on those 17’s and destroyed everything in from of me. Loved that bike.
Then, out of the blue(or red, hehe.) a great friend of mine purchased himself a Honda XR650R. At first I wasn’t too excited to try it out. I mean, it’s another 650 and I’ve already one of those. HOLY CRAP !!! This big red pig was a monster. Without all the extra weight starter and battery, this thing was nimble. Then the power….this bikes got enough torque to fold concrete over. I was hooked.
I knew I had to get baptised into the XRR family so I began looking around and found a prime project bike. Good price, dual sport conversion done and best of all, CA Registered street legal. So I picked up that 2002 Honda XR650R, and have never looked back.
**Plans for the bike? ** The second I got the bike, I had fallen in love with it. But after riding around for a few hundred miles, I realized there were some shortcomings when you have a convert dual sport bike. So I set on my journey of upgrades, starting with lighting.
**Lighting Upgrades Begin: ** Stock Headlight: This baby was fine during the day, but as soon as the evening hours start to hit, that tiny thing would barely illuminate a few feet in front of me. When you can’t see in from of you, that means others can barely see you as well. Stock had to go! Baja Designs: This thing wasn’t too bad. It was easy to purchase. Arrived quickly, and installation was a breeze. The lights were adequate but still did not satisfy my need for better lighting.
**What Do I Do Next ? ** As I’ve gone through a few setups now, I’ve begun to do a bit more research into what others have done. Most people either get the squadron pro headlight or go full out custom. So, after days of thought, I finally decided it was the best option to go full customer lighting on this beast if I am ever going to quench that thirst.
**Stator: ** As many of you here know, the stock XR650R stator will put out just enough power for your small headlight and turn signals. Beyond that, it’s useless.
Reading all over forums, EVERYONE(and I mean everyone) keeps saying, “Just go buy a Ricky Stator and forget about it”. Well, given that I’m quite budget minded, I looked at those Ricky Stators and I just couldn’t justify spending nearly $200 on the stator alone, on top of which I still need to buy all the lights! So I began looking around and I stumbled upon RM Stator.
I did as much research as I can about this company, and found little info for anything related to the XR650R. Seems like most people were using their stators for ATV’s and what not. So I looked around their site and I found a stator compatible with the XR650R!
https://www.rmstator.com/en_ww/list/parts/Motorcycle/2002/Honda/XR_650_R/--/
The stators output is 200w and is a plug and play replacement for most bikes. Plus, it’s a solid $50 cheaper than the Ricky Stator I was planning on buying. Any money saved is good for me!
**Whats Next ? ** Well, now that I have the stator, I’m planning out my attack for headlight and aux lighting setups. I’ve got a few ideas in mind, but the general consensus is that I’ve got to be able to run my lighting plus a few other things like GPS and USB Phone chargers. This is going to require me to get a small lightweight battery installed, regulator/rectifier setup and wired. Additionally, I’ll need some more handlebar light controls. I’m hoping to keep everyone updated on this build progress and let you know if this RM Stator not only works but if it lasts as well as its competition.
Here's some photos of the RM Stator http://i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o626/andreyka64/IMG_0345.jpg
End of Part 1 → Continued Part 2 with all build updates will be out soon.
Hey guys, long story short: all the threads fell out of my oil drain plug on the crank, so I tapped it out to a larger size. I guess I was being optimistic about how much gravity would help me collect all the shavings, because I can spy a whole bunch of aluminum hanging out in the bottom of the crankcase now. Any recommendations on how to flush it out?
Oh right, I have a yz400f.
Thanks for any help!
Hello r/thumpers how are ya'll? I recently began customizing my 2004 Suzuki Savage and it has all been going smoothly so far. However I just removed the gas tank and found that there is a tube leading into the gas tank that I did not see on any instructional gas tank removal videos... anyway, I am just trying to figure out what it is. Here are some pictures https://imgur.com/a/ssVg2 I appreciate any help I can get. Thanks!
