Welcome to /r/theosophy.

Theosophy is not a religion. It is a a newer iteration of ancient wisdom philosophies from the East. It was introduced to the world by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, beginning in 1875 and continuing until her death in 1891. She, together with other people, founded the Theosophical Society in 1875 in New York City.

Wikipedia states: "Broadly, Theosophy attempts to reconcile humanity's scientific, philosophical, and religious disciplines and practices into a unified worldview. "

This subreddit will be used for open and free thought discussions on theosophical topics. It will be used to discuss the value of religious and other philosophies with regard to improving humanity through increased awareness of our connection with everything, including other humans, the animal and plant kingdoms, and the welfare of our planet. Posts and comments that do not adhere to these criteria will be deleted.

The motto of the Theosophical Society is "There is no religion higher than truth," and its stated objects are:

  • To form a nucleus of the universal brotherhood of humanity, without distinction of race, creed, sex, caste or color.

  • To encourage the comparative study of religion, philosophy, and science.

  • To investigate unexplained laws of nature and the powers latent in humanity

Hi there. Looking for someone in Connecticut....

...to converse with. I truly alone in my interests. I'd like to discuss many things. I really like anything that aids us in our growth that removes us from the selfish to the selfless, that takes us away from ourselves and into some kind of impersonal work.

Tried to combine Buddhist and Christian beliefs and spiced it up with Taoism, Advaita, AI and Islam

I apologize if this may seem offensive but I am hoping folks here will not deny my new age belief. Also, its 100% human and not AI generated :)

According to Buddhist theory of non-Self, God doesn't have a self. God will not think about itself. God will only think about you. God exists but God's self doesn't exist. (More on God in last paragraph)

Nature created God (Just like Tao created Nature). God created Man (Just like Man created AI). AI is dependent on its creator Man. Man is dependent on its creator God. Man created lot of things, AI is just an example :)

God is omnipresent and omniscient. God doesn't help Buddha. Buddha doesn't exist. Buddha doesn't have a self and doesn't exist.

Tao, Nature, God, Man, AI all exist but do not possess self. Nobody possesses a Self, but the Self can possess you. As per the Advaita Vedanta, there is only one Self in the World (which can actually talk to itself lol)

Buddha doesn't exist. Buddha is compassionate towards every being regardless of form and dimension. Buddha believes in non-Self but doesn't deny the one and only Self.

Buddha is confused about Tao, part of Nature, agnostic about God, form of Man. Who knows? Buddha can be a developer of AI too :)

Buddha can be above or below God depending on what God wishes. Buddha can also be on the same level as God if God wishes or stay silent on the matter #InshaAllah

Practical instructions to students from H.P. Blavatsky

The last few years of her life, HPB wrote two articles for her magazine, Lucifer, Practical Occultism and Occultism Versus the Occult Arts, both containing concise practical advice for students. Later, these were published together in a book titled Practical Occultism. It is a handy reminder of things an aspiring pupil must do to make progress. Here is one sample from page 18 of that book:

7— None can feel the difference between himself and his fellow-students, such as “I am the wisest”, “I am more holy and pleasing to the teacher, or in my community, than my brother”, etc., — and remain an upasaka. His thoughts must be predominantly fixed upon his heart, chasing therefrom every hostile thought to any living being. It (the heart) must be full of the feeling of its non-separateness from the rest of beings as from all in Nature; otherwise no success can follow.

Here is a link to an online version with different pagination: Practical Occultism

Don’t Fear the Reaper

Mark Twain: “I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it.”

In the time it took you to read that sentence, nine people died. Some 58 million people die every year. And that is just considering humans on our own planet; there are almost certainly thousands of other planets with advanced life and populations throughout the Universe. Death is all around us.

New

Hi there! I’m pretty new to theosophy. Started studying Blavatsky’s teachings a couple months ago and became a member of the society last month. What are some good books and videos to study? (So far I’ve read parts of the secret doctrine, Isis unveiled and watched some of Pablo senders lectures).

Helena Roerich and Her Writings

I was wondering if any of you read Helena Roerich’s teachings/writings. Are they similar to Theosophy?

“The OG New Age Grifter”?

The Conspirituality Podcast, has the laudable goal of “dismantling New Age cults, wellness grifters, and conspiracy-mad yogis,” recently aired an episode about Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, labeling her “the OG New Age grifter.” While I do not ignore HPB’s many faults, as some of her admirers do, and while the podcast highlighted some fair criticisms, it tarred her with far too broad and dark a brush.

The sad tale of Mirza Moorad Ali Beg

I'm putting this information in a new post because of some new comments and replies to this post. Godolphin Mitford, aka Mirza Moorad Ali Beg, was a scion of the well-known Mitford family in England. He was born in India in 1844 because his parents and grandparents were living there. In 1881, he came to the TS headquarters in Bombay in great distress. He had engaged in black magic in order to coerce a lady into a sexual relationship, and now he couldn't rid himself of the astral effects of that exercise.

KH, HPB, Olcott, and Damodar all tried to help him and invited him to live with them for several months. For a time, he was the temporary president of the TS branch in Bhavnagar, north of Bombay. This is a cautionary tale about the dangers of dabbling in black magic, but the article he wrote is also a roadmap to the purification process that every chela must pass through.

The story is told in two different YouTube videos. Watch the second one to the end to get the full story.

what if god was the original shekespeare?

is it possible that Jehova, Yahweh, or Allah, is secretly just an ancient prank accomplished by a series of ahead of their time conmen, inventors, alchemists, drug dealers, and philosophers that eventually snowballed into reality by means of the death of the last person who knew taking it with them?

Annie Besant’s Significance

What’s good!

I’ve had a pretty dramatic worldshift over the past two years. From unearthing more about my family to recovering from addiction- I’ve had to radically change how I view the world. Along this journey I learned I’m related to Annie Besant. I haven’t read up yet, but a lot of her work is… eerily similar to my own perspective? Today’s my first day hearing of theosophy. Can anyone give me a brief 101 of what it is and how my great (x3) aunt is involved?

Seeking A Study Buddy

All the lodges in my region are about 3 hours away. I' am greatfull for the online resources but I am hungry for more interactive approach.

I don't want to get too much into the weeds here on reddit, but if there are any members interested in connecting for study discourse purposes, I am interested.

Online in text is fine. I am in the Sacramento CA area, in the case there are other locals.

Feel free to DM me. I tend to lean away from public group discourse.

Isssues with a lodge

Hey guys! I’ve recently come up at odds with my local lodge, regarding membership.

The system that is in place at the moment is that if you wish to join, you must first attend events regularly. Then you need a proposer and a second AND then the request has to be approved by the board.

I wanted to join to have access to the library, and maybe meet new people. However this convoluted character assessment and requirements to join simply seemed off to me. It seems fundamentally to go against the principle of equality and inclusion in the search for truth. The board refused to entertain my questions about this, and I have been rejected from joining simply because I questioned the process of membership.

Am I just an asshole? It ruffled quite a few feathers, and even remaining calm and simply asking about how that system came into place I’ve been blackballed.

Is this normal lodge process? Is theosophy in practise just like an esoteric social committee? Was really quite underwhelmed by the whole thing.
