    Character's surname

    Hello!

I am writing a story where my character is ethnically Thai. Her grandparents, her parents and her were all born and live in the US. Could you help me come up with a surname for her? I've been trying and it's hard since everything that I come up with comes up as an already existing Thai surname (there's a website I found where I can check this) and apparently from what I found each family in Thailand has a unique surname. If it helps somehow the character is sometimes called by this last name as a nickname by her friend (I've been using a substitute until I finally find the one and then I'll change it) so maybe something on the shorter side if possible?

    Thanks in advance!

    PayPal for art commissions?

I've had people from outside Thailand wanting to commission my work asking if I have PayPal. I'm unsure whether or not to sign up for it as I heard it's notoriously complicated to use for Thais. Does anyone have any personal experience/advice for using PayPal as a Thai person or have any other suggestions? Thanks.

In 2023, 31,402 suicide attempts were recorded in Thailand. Thai teenagers have the highest suicide attempt rates in the country (WHO, 2024)

A lot of us grew up in the country where severe physical and emotional abuse against children is systematically normalized and swept under the rug—both in the familial and educational settings; in Thailand, a deeply entrenched seniority culture and a corrupted educational system reinforce the notion that adults can do no wrong. Many teachers, shielded by this culture, have been free to physically, emotionally, and even sexually abuse students without facing consequences. Meanwhile, neglectful or abusive parents are placed on a pedestal, and expected to be revered as gods—an expectation reinforced by societal norms, cultural traditions, and a widespread misinterpretation of Buddhist teachings on filial piety. The result is a collective silence, a lack of national awareness, and an environment where children are conditioned to endure suffering without question.

From a young age, we are taught to be grateful—no matter what. Gratitude, in itself, is not the issue. But when it is weaponized to silence suffering, it becomes a tool of oppression. Children learn to endure mistreatment unquestioningly, to suffer in silence, to suppress their pain until it consumes them. It is no surprise, then, that Thailand has one of the highest suicide rates in ASEAN. In 2019, 800 young Thais between the ages of 10 and 29 successfully took their own lives (WHO, 2019; Department of Mental Health, 2019). Thai teenagers have the highest suicide attempt rates in the country (WHO, 2024). In 2023 alone, 31,402 suicide attempts were recorded in Thailand across all age groups (WHO, 2024).

I was part of these statistics. Throughout my life, I attempted suicide multiple times for all the reasons I’ve described. The only thing that kept me going—and still keeps me going—is the Buddha’s teaching on suicide, and why I turned to Buddhism.

The pervasive issue of child abuse in Thailand demands immediate and decisive action from all sectors of society, especially those in positions of authority. Despite the enactment of the Child Protection Act in 2003, which aims to safeguard children under 18 from all forms of abuse and exploitation, violence against children remains widespread. In 2017 alone, nearly 9,000 children were treated in hospitals due to abuse, predominantly sexual in nature—a figure likely representing just the tip of the iceberg (Unicef, 2019).

To our policymakers, educators, and community leaders: it is imperative to strengthen the implementation of existing child protection laws and to cultivate a culture that unequivocally condemns abuse. This includes providing adequate resources for child protection services, ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable, and promoting public awareness campaigns to educate communities about the signs of abuse and the importance of reporting it.

By taking these steps, we can work towards a future where every child in Thailand is safe, valued, and empowered to thrive. Since childhood, I have heard adults and people in authority claiming that the well-being of our children is a direct reflection of the health of our nation. Maybe it's actually time we commit to creating an environment where the rights and dignity of every child are upheld, instead of contributing to the statistics.

Is there a Thai equivalent to Vkei?

I'm trying to learn thai and I thought that it might be a good start to find thai music I'd enjoy. I love j-rock/vkei bands and artists like malice mizer, kaya, buck-tick and plastic tree. I've already looked at malerose and I love their fashion but I didnt connect with the songs, so is there anything like that? I quite liked Dear Sinner too, although I'm trying to find something in thai.

How to Apply for a Work Visa in Thailand?

    Hi everyone,

I arrived in Thailand a few months ago and have been renewing my visa by leaving and re-entering the country.

I am in a great relationship with a Thai national. The reason I moved here is that the Australian government repeatedly rejected her holiday visa due to her financial and employment status.

I would like to apply for a work visa so I can stay here legally and long-term. I am an IT professional and programmer. What are the best steps to take to obtain a work visa? Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks in advance!

    Citizenship

    Hello everyone

I have a question about Thai citizenship for my son, and I hope someone can clarify how it works. My son was born in Thailand and hasnt left the country since. He is now 6 years old, he speaks fluent Thai and has been attending school here.

I’m wondering, does he qualify for Thai citizenship, or is there a specific process we would need to go through? What are the requirements for children born in Thailand to non-Thai parents?

Any advice or insights from your experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    Psychiatric medication in BKK

I was wondering if anyone could tell me how I would go about getting psychiatric meds in BKK. I'm prescribed anti-psychotics and anti-depressants at home. Unfortunately, I'm travelling at the moment and the two bags containing my supplies and my emergency supplies have been lost by the airline. I'm still good for a couple of weeks but need to find somewhere.

I don't really know where to start looking.

ID issue: born in Th but does not speak the language

Hey ! Any Thai here who does not speak Thai ? I was born in Thailand from a French mom and Thai father but when we went back to France when I was 2. They did not teach me the language and did not take care of my Thai ID papers either.

Now that I am an adult, I would like to go to Thailand and ask for a Thai ID, I have all the papers and my father with me but the problem is: nobody from my father to the municipality understands why on earth I would like to be Thai and they are going to ask me for a reason. Of course "psychological" reasons are not valid lol (yes there is racism in France, went to Thailand, discovered I wasn't Thai enough either, yada yada).

Second thing: I don't speak Thai and I am afraid this might be an issue (my parents did not want me to learn since they did not think I would ever want to go to Thailand).

Anyone in a similar, even vaguely, situation?

Edit: I am a woman so as far as I know no conscription for me Also thanks a LOT for all the answers, I feel way less anxious about the process. I will keep you posted if I can! Don't hesitate to get in touch.

    Relationship Advice

Hello, I'm an American 28M dating a Thai girl (31) in Japan. She speaks very good English so it's pretty easy to understand each other most of the time. The main issue is I feel like it's always her way or the highway. Like it's always about what she wants and I feel like she doesn't show consideration for what I want and when I bring up issues I have I feel like she doesn't hear me out. She also avoids arguments. Of course I don't want to argue but when we have disagreements it's either we never come to a solution and she acts like everything is fine or she gets what she wants.

For example, she'll go out with her friends in Tokyo and party. Which is completely fine, but she'll stay out literally all night and it's not just girls that are with her. It just makes me feel uncomfortable. I'm not saying I don't trust her but still I think any guy would feel that way. Well when I said I had an issue with it she basically said well I'm gonna do it anyway.

Then recently she posted on her story that she was looking to do some modeling for someone and was asking if anyone will do it. I simply asked why she doesn't involve me, like I could do it for her. I never said she couldn't do it or that I even had a problem with it. But she asked if I had a problem with it. Before I could even respond she said even if I did have a problem with it she's gonna do it anyway. Like bruh... So you're telling me if I'm not comfortable with something you don't care. We had a big argument about it then she said she wanted to kill herself (She has been stressing over other things). So obviously I had to deal with that and not push the issue to make the situation worse. But after that she went back to acting like everything was normal even though we never came to a solution or anything. So I'm still upset about the whole situation but I don't even wanna bring it up again because I feel like she's not willing to listen to me.

Am I being crazy? Do you think I'm being controlling? Is there something about the culture difference that has something to do with this? I love her but it really hurts when I feel like she does not take my feelings into consideration. There are other issues but these examples pretty much tell the story. Tell me what you think?

    Moving to Thailand

I’ve been thinking of moving to Thailand in about a year/ 2 years max. I’m a currently 20yo uni student with my own online business. I bring in about 5-9k dollars a month depending on how much I work. I want to live somewhere that’s city like with nice malls etc. but I also like nature a lot. I love mountains and beaches if that helps narrow it down.

I’ve decided that I’m not moving to Bangkok first because it’s a lot easier to get by with English there and I want to force myself to learn the language and culture quickly so I can integrate as fast as possible. Im willing to go to a language school if needed.

A place with a lot of young people would be nice(I don’t think making friends with 30+yo ppl is going to come natural for me😭)What are some good places for me to live and is my budget enough to live nicely. P.S. I’m a big spender, but it’s also expensive here in Norway so idk if I can continue like I am or if I should start budgeting 😅

Any and all advice is welcomed, even if it’s unrelated to my question.

I love working out so some place that isn’t too rural to have a gym would be nice.

How to Register a Birth for a Thai National Born in the UK?

    Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out to see if anyone can offer advice on the process of registering my birth with the Thai government. I was born in the UK to a Thai mother, who has since passed away. Now I need to understand how to officially register my birth with Thailand to confirm my Thai nationality.

I’ve already contacted the Thai Embassy in London, but I haven’t received much guidance yet. If anyone has experience with registering their birth or obtaining Thai nationality in similar situations, I would greatly appreciate your advice.

Currently, I have: • My UK birth certificate. • A copy of my late mother’s UK passport.

I’m working on obtaining additional documents to confirm her Thai nationality. Any tips or information would be very helpful!

    Thank you so much!

How to find a (remote) Job in Thailand?

I moved to Bangkok in April 24 with a remote job. Since my company is very conservative and doesn’t have an office in Thailand I only got a 6 months contract.

After a break of 2 months I’m looking for a job since December but find it quite difficult to find a suitable job here in Bangkok.

Do you have any advice where to look for English speaking jobs/companies besides LinkedIn, JobsDB or networking events? And where to even find a remote job?

It’s quite devastating, because 99% of the time I don’t even get a reply from the companies.

To me: I have 8 years experience in Employer Branding and HR Marketing in international operating companies, but I’m open to fields like sales, product marketing or project management even with low experience in these jobs.

    Thank you 🙏🏼

same sex marriage in Thailand for two foreigners

Our background: I am living in Japan and working. My BF is living in Australia and working. We are originally from illegal same-sex marriage country. We are in rs for 8 years, for 6 years in a same town. But for 2 years now, we are LDRS (we meet every 6 months).

Issue: I applied Australia visit visa but was rejected last week. Having no options for us to stay together, we are thinking to marry in Thailand since it will allow same-sex marriage soon. After marriage, we will try Australia subsequent entrant visa as his spouse.

Question: Do you think our above idea will work? I would like to know detail information/step about marriage in Thailand. Do we need to give notice to Amphur before we register? Please let me know if anything I should be worried about for this plan. Thanks.

can anyone translate this paragraph for me please?

I tried to use google translate but it doesn't make sense to me. thank you!
