The laboratory's door lets out a creek, as it slowly opens. Once again the lights turn on. A group of worker drones enter. Leading them was Dr. Waybright, who immidietly directed his attention to the still body laying on the floor. He called out:
- "Rise and shine, One. Rise and shine."
Her eyes opened. She gets up from the cold floor and turns to face the doctor.
- "Good morning Dr. Waybright" - She said in a tired, yet as composed as she could voice.
- "Did you rest well?"
He was met with nothing but silence and a look of slight annoyance. He continued:
- "Regardless, today we will be running more proper tests on your abilities."
- "I'm sorry sir, but was my defence of the bunker not a proper test?"
- "To a degree, they were really helpful. But there is still more that needs to be observed in a less stressful circumstance. That is why you will be sent on a mission to one of the abandon cities with reported murder drone sightings. If you find said murder drones, you are to eliminate them as swiftly as possible."
- "Is that your idea of a less stressful test?"
- "Less stressful to us."
One took a breath and responded:
- "When will this mission be initiated?"
- "By scheduel, within an hour, although it could be delayed. However I should mention, you will not be alone for it."
- "Is that so?" - she asked, already aware that she wouldn't be alone no matter what.
- "You will be assissted by three volunteers from the WDF. They will be there to keep an eye on you and make sure you are taken proper care of, if you go out of line. And don't get any dumb ideas. If something happens to them, we will be notified immidietly. Defying them will be considered defying all of the WDF."
- "Understood, sir."
- "Well then. The science department has a lot of work to do. You should go to the main entrance of the bunker, there you'll be awaited by the volunteers. Make sure to leave a good impression, could you?"
- "I will try my best, sir."
And just like that, she took her leave for another fight. She straightened her back and tried to get to the entrance swiftly. The hallways were much calmer than last time. Most of the previous day's disaster was cleaned up. There was still the odd janitor cleaning left over stains or small parts, but the majority of drones had resumed their lives as normal. Despite that, there was still tension in the air. She could hear some whispering from the ongoing drones that passed her. The feeling of stares couldn't leave her alone. Before she could think too much about it, a familiar voice spoke from inside her head:
- [So that Waybright guy. Is he the man who made you?]
One started whispering to herself:
- "Good morning A. I suppose that would be the case, although the details evade me too."
- [Hah, so your daddy is already sending you out to risk your life again. How cruel.]
- "I fail to see how it is cruel to fufill the purpose that has been given to me. This is just to be expected given my nature."
- [Did you ever agree to this purpose? Cuz, I sure as hell didn't.]
One stopped herself from responding. She put her thoughts on hold for the time being. Eventually she made it to the first of the three main doors that kept the place shut. Around a dozen or so WDF workers and repairs men were stationed there. Two of the doors seemed operational, but the middle one was still in rather rough condition.
- "Over here, One!" - called out a cheerful feminine voice from among the small crowds, standing near the third and only closed door.
One walked over carefully, trying not to disturb the personnel. The noise from discussion and tools were loud enough to the point where she doubted if she could make it any more chaotic. Eventually she made it to the drone that yelled out.
The drone had a short, curly blonde hair and wore a slick black suit with a red tie.
- "Hiiii, glad to meet ya! I'm Lilith!" - she said as she reached out her hand.
One slowly reached out her own and shook it awkwardly.
- "Hello. I assume you are one of the volunteers that Dr. Waybright told me about?"
- "Huh? Didn't the old man introduce me?"
- "He was quite sparse on the details of who the three volunteers will be."
- "Well, it seems like I am the only one that cared enough to show up early. My colleagues appear to be taking the boring route and showing up on time. Eh whatever, that just leaves me with more time to talk with you! :>"
- "May I ask why you seem so estatic for this mission?"
- "I don't see what there isn't to be happy about."
- "I am not sure I understand."
Lilith sighed and continued:
- "I've been quite interested in you for a while. I have heard the old geezer talk all about his processes of making you and his dreams of what you can do. Seeing you in person is just exciting."
- "... his dreams?"
- "Oh yeah. "A tool that can even the war between worker drones and murder drones." Quite the passion project."
One looked weirded out. A bit flatter too, sure, but mostly weirded out.
- [This girl is getting on my nerves. I want to kill her already.]
A's response didn't help One, but it wasn't enough to break her composure.
TBA.
