Identification of wood louse.

Hello, I’ve had this terrarium for around 3 years now, picked up an old ”fish bowl” from a recycling plant and turned it (after about 10 years) in to a a little micro habitat for woodlice and small centipedes I’ve found around the woods by my house.

Woodlice going in were about 3-5 mm, now this is about 2 cm large (about 1 inch) and has these wings of chitin on its exoskeleton. I’ve never seen them grow these large or well-pronounced before and by now I’m just supposing they’re feeling great in there - but I’d still like to know the species and would be ever so grateful if anyone here has an idea. My best guess would be Armadillidium - but I’m only a layman.

Have a great weekend.

Advice for school project terrarium

Hello! One of our projects for this semester is to create a terrarium with at least 1 herbivore, 1 decomposer, and 4 or more plants. It only needs to stay alive for at least 3 days. We plan on adding these:

- Fern
- moss
- fittonia
- begonia
- earthworm

We'd like to ask for some suggestions and advice :D

My first real mushroom!

I’m so excited. This grew all on its own in the last few days. I have no clue what it is but I think it’s neat. Hopefully it’s not a bad mushroom.

Mold!!!

I think I got mold on my first terrarium! How can I fix this? Or is it a lost cause?

What are some underground insects/worms/larvae I could add to my terrarium?

I have a bioactive terrarium housing springtails, isopods, silverfish and a few Hogna Radiata slings (~7-8 months old, pretty tiny right now).

I recently added a darkling beetle larva to the enclosure and it burrowed. Sometimes it surfaces and crawls around a bit, then returns underground and stays in its favourite spot against the glass, which is pretty cool to see. I was wondering if there were some other life forms I could add to this enclosure that burrow? The dirt takes up about ~1800 cubic centimetres or 110 cubic inches.

I heard earthworms cause a lot of mess, so not sure I'd want those, and I think ants would just outcompete everything... so maybe some other larvae or worm?

Thank you.

Any suggestions for what I should put in this?

I have this old (dead) terrarium vase that used to house a bonsai and some moss. I'd like something more interesting though, possibly with some kind of bug life or something (semi) aquatic although I'm not sure if it's strong enough for the water. It measures about 15cm wide and 40cm high. Looking for suggestions and inspiration! Thanks very much!

Making my first terrarium

I have a piece of driftwood that I brought home from a vacation and I thought it would be nice to put it into a terrarium. I am now researching how to build a terrarium so any tips are welcome and video recommendations are also welcome 😊 I'm really exited to try this out

First attempt

I ordered some terrarium tools, sphagnum moss and coco coir, but delivery will take a while and I ran out of patience and decided to just work with what I had.

Created today, February 1st 2025. Jar (from a local "dollar store") is 14cm wide at the bottom, 13cm tall, opening is 8cm. Drainage layer is a mix of medium dark pebbles and tiny light pebbles - I did not trust my mesh to work well and saw a tip online that smaller pebbles stop the substrate from leaking down, so decided to try that. Substrate is standard potting soil. I worked with disposable bamboo chopsticks. No microfauna, no hardscape and no moss (due to no patience on my part).

As a first attempt I decided to go with hard to kill plants, so took some cuttings of ivy I had in a pot outside and some baby leaves from a neighboring mother of thousands (?). I hope they thrive and fight for control of the jar, which I named "the Thunderdome".

It stands in a room with a south-east window, no other lights yet.

Mystery resident

Is anyone able to identify this from the only not-so-great photo I was able to take..? It’s a closed (but not sealed) terrarium in the UK, which has included some naturally sourced moss. I’ve only noticed it twice and can only see one.

generally, what kind of plants are easy to keep in a sealed terrarium?

im pretty new at this hobby, and i am aware of a bunch of plants that are good for terrariums, but i was wondering if there was usually some kind of type of plant/plants that grow in a specific place that are generally easier to grow in a terrarium. for example, i really wanted to try and make a terrarium with begonia escargot, since i think it looks really pretty. any tips overall?

Question about the back wall for plant terra

First of all, a friendly hello everyone.

I'm a complete newbie so I have a few questions. Yesterday I got the larger ÅKERBÄR greenhouse from the well-known Swedish house.

I also got Styrupor, Beumarkt's own tile adhesive, sealing rubber and acrylic. The plan is to seal the (door) with the rubber seals and make it leak-proof at the bottom with the acrylic.

It should be a plant tank with high humidity because I'm very interested in that. I now wanted to make a back wall out of Styrupor.

I would cut the wall so that it fits in well and then take it out again for further processing and then attach it later with arcly when it is finished.

Now I don't read anything clear there, hence my question.

Once I've finished the wall that I like, I would probably apply a few layers of tile adhesive to it because of its structure, according to the internet. Afterwards I would like to apply a nice color, but I'm still unsure whether a light one would be better or a dark one, as the plants might show up better with a dark one.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Now the question is, do I have to seal it once I have painted the tile adhesive? I don't find anything consistent there. Some say yes, because it attracts water and at some point the tile adhesive soaks and dissolves. Others say no if you just use sand instead of paint. Or you can probably use varnish, which doesn't matter to the plants as long as no animals get in. Many people also say that you have to seal it with wood glue or resin. So I won't be conclusive here.

Terrarium help (creatures)

Just made a background for my new terrarium and used acrylic paint and clear acrylic paint gloss for the rocks. I did research and read that these paints would be safe around animals when the fumes dissipate after a few days to a week.

Just want any suggestions for possible animals to include in my terrarium. I was thinking a frog, or a gecko and I was going to have a basic clean up crew of springtails and isopods.

If there is an issue with the paint I used please let me know.

Just made this for any suggestions on animals.

Growing leftover moss

Hey all. I'm trying to grow moss in some clear plastic food tubs. After I got everything in the peat moss and the moss planted. I realized the Peat moss has fertilizer in it. It's the miracle grow... I wasn't even thinking..I'm guessing that's not good. The moss is just stuff I collected around my condo. I'm guessing it will die. Thank you for any help
