🪡 Cherish this art with delight, the mastery of tatting, a wondrous sight. For these intricacies, a story is told, where shuttle lace craft, we forever hold.

What are your favorite stiffeners or starches? What's non-acidic so pieces won't change color over time?
I know where I can probably get museum quality frames and backing for any pieces that should be framed. So they won't yellow. I always test with an acid test pen or kit
I'm curious about things that are worn and items like tree ornaments.
Hey everyone I'm searching for the best threads that are easily available in Europe specifically in Germany. I've seen a lot of people recommending handy hands lizbeth but I can only find a very limited colour range. I'm wondering if anyone has some recommendations that won't cost me a ton of shipping as well. Thanks in advance! :)
TURNS OUT IVE BEEN FLIPPING MY STITCHES LIKE A DUMBASS BUT I CAN NOW SEE THEM FLIPPING WOHOOOOO
i was literally this close to giving up tatting but thank god i was actually able to learn it.
Hope wtv comes next is easier than flipping these stitches 😭😭
Would love any advice on what to do or learn next cuz i seriously dk lmao
My mom was doing a raffle of some mystery books for a fundraiser, so I made her a pair of bookmarks. One in crochet, the other tatted.
I just ran across this picture of a shuttle referred to as a “double deuce” and I’m fascinated! I’ve never seen one before (in my limited experience). Can someone here with more experience explain how this works? Is the 2nd bobbin for a different color thread?
I feel like I tat so slowly 😭 I know every pattern is different so here’s a scenario: a motif, in size 10 thread that measures about 3in across when finished. It has 3 rows and only uses one shuttle. About how long would that take you?
I want to tat a little dinosaur for a Christmas present. Anyone come across any tatted dinos out there? Patterns or just images are welcome!
I'm trying to think of bridesmaid gifts for my wedding and think it would be neat to make something from tatting, but I don't want to just give a random piece of lace with no purpose. What are some ways you have incorporated tatting into a gift?
Hey I saw this post (https://www.reddit.com/r/tatting/s/jiZwcvx2fA) from 2yrs ago and wanted to share something I recently came up with that could be a start to a doily (it is earring-sized). I used chains, very small rings (1-1), and twisted picots based on this youtube tutorial from Sparrow Spite (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahbquZFsGVY).
This is my first go at making a pattern and I know the measurements are not 100% yet, but I thought others might want to see.
Materials: (this is what I used, do as you like!)
I am using ~ for a short twisted picot, my short ones are about .6cm, or half a long
Pattern: Rnd 1: ch 6, (ring 1~1 with the core thread), AND long twisted picot with the working thread (mine is about 1.25cm) four times then ch 6, join to long twisted picot starting with the first, second, and so on, AND (ring 1~1 with the core thread) four times and tie to start. Rnd 2: ch 15, join to long twisted picot starting with the first, second, and so on, AND (ring 1~1 with the core thread) eight times and tie to start.
I found that putting a small ring at the points helped to keep my chains from slipping and created some structure. I originally tried an overhand knot for this effect and it was much harder than just tatting a small ring. I also tried non-twisted picots and it came out all higgledy piggledy.
For future patterns I would try making it a little more interesting to look at by adding bigger rings at the points and adding more picots, which might get us closer to a doily as originally requested.
I look forward to seeing what others make! Happy tatting :)
Hello folks! I've been using polyester thread for a bit, and have questions. So many questions! 😅
All thoughts would be so welcome! 🙏🏼
I have been tatting for six months now and I really like doing it! I've been using white DMC cordonnet special that I found secondhand in thickness 30-80 but they only make it in white or creme but I'd like to have black thread for my projects. Are there other brands that sell thread that feels the same as the DMC cordonnet special but in black?
I usually watch dramas while tatting, but lately I've noticed reading a book is possible when making simple patterns. It made me wonder what everyone else is doing, so: What else do you do when you tat, or do you focus on it complitely?
I am profoundly confused... My tatting journey just started recently and I tend to learn as I go. Well, there's only so much I can read and look up, but in the end I need to get stuff done in order to understand. And it never occurred to me to be aware of in which direction I work. And now I stumble across a pattern that calls for a clockwise direction... 😳😳😳 Like... PARDON ME?!?!
So, I looked at my stuff... and ALL of it runs anticlockwise!
Am I doing something wrong? 🤔
I am coming to tatting after many years of knitting and crochet so I may be spoiled, or just not looking in the right places. But I’ve been having a hard time finding patterns online that I can both learn on and feel excited about. I am very open to learning by doing some practice patterns but ultimately would like to make chokers/necklaces. However, I keep encountering broken links when I search for patterns online, or just not finding anything free that both suits my interests and is beginner-friendly. I’d rather not buy a pattern for my first project as I’d like to be able to read through it and make sure I have an understanding of what to expect.
Any of the following would be very welcome!
Thanks!
Thanks to the wonderful advice of the kind people here, I’ve been able to complete so much in the past two weeks! They’re definitely not perfect, and this doesn’t even include any of my many failed designs.
My first rings and chains. The motions are becoming a little easier.
I broke my rule, yesterday. I decided to Tat using Black Thread. I have really bad vision and typically, I don’t like working with Black on for anything. Even when I am given a sewing task, I always say, I will do it as long as it is not black. I have a few assortment packs of these Color chrome fire polished beads on black glass and the black thread seemed to be a must. I kept getting a Goth vibe with them. The original design, by Angela Gambka is done in green and it called for 2mm beads when the ones I used are 3mm so my finished pieces came out larger bcz I swapped thread to accommodate the larger beads. I used 4 strands of Isacord and I’m not mad at it at all. When I showed my son, he said, “these are going to make some Goth very happy!” Thank you, kiddo! I know, Rt!
