Information about, and organizing to stop, extraction of oil from tar sands

This subreddit is for information about, and us organizing to stop, the extraction of oil from tar sands deposits. One great place to start is to stop planned expansions of the extraction already underway.

The 2016 Treaty Alliance Against Tar Sands includes over 100 First Nations and Tribes who have committed to working together to stop tar sands expansion. Mazaska Talks is their campaign (with others) for banks to defund the tar sands. (Also see DeFund DAPL and DivestInvest.)

Many of the treaty signatories, and many other groups and individuals, are also submitting comments, establishing front-line camps, etc., etc. (more coming here in the sidebar at some point, meanwhile read the feed!)

Here are the five proposed pipelines which if built would allow an increase in production from the Athabascan tar sands deposit in Alberta, Canada:

Northern Gateway (Enbridge) - cancelled!

Trans Mountain (Kinder Morgan) - Join North Shore No Pipeline Expansion, also see Coast Protectors - Construction underway - #StopKM

Keystone XL (TransCanada) - See r/NoKXL - cancelled! - #NoKXL

Enbridge Line 3 (Enbridge) - Under construction, daily activism - #StopLine3

Energy East (TransCanada) - cancelled!

The initial Treaty Alliance press release also commits to stopping "tar sands rail projects such as the Chaleur Terminals Inc. export project at the Port of Belledune in New Brunswick."

Also, learn about the valve-turners who have shut down existing tar sands pipelines, most recently in October of 2016 (in support of the International Days of Prayer and Action for Standing Rock) when people shut down all five pipelines crossing from the U.S. into Canada. See videos and articles.

Tar sands resistance goes back much earlier than this of course, prominently in regard to the Athabascan tar sands by Idle No More, Unis'tot'en Camp, and in relation to Keystone XL, Tar Sands Blockade, Bold Nebraska, 350, numerous local Tar Sands Resistance organizations, and many many others. The southern leg of Keystone XL was built, but the northern leg was eventually stopped when, under pressure, President Obama denied a required permit for crossing the Canada-US border.

Now (2017) Trump has resurrected it.
