SSSS Security Screening leaving Tahiti?

Just checked in for my flight to the U.S. for tonight and I have the dreaded SSSS (Secondary Security Screening Selection) on my boarding pass.

Has anybody had to do this before, how thorough was it, how long should I expect?

Know in the U.S. it can sometimes be a long affair, but in other countries it is barely more than the usual screening, so I’m curious what it’s like here.

Resort to Resort Transfer on Bora-Bora

Hello, my wife and I will celebrating our thirtieth (30) wedding anniversary at the Four-Season Bora-Bora and the St. Regis as well as a couple of other islands.

Wanted to know the best way to go from the Four-Seasons to the St. Regis. Do we have to take the Hotel boat(s) back to the airport and go back and forth to the resorts or is there a better way? Thank you.

Hilton Moorea Tips

Hello,

My wife and I are in in our 40s. My daughter is 16 and we are staying at the Hilton Moorea Deluxe Overwater Bungalow from June 15 to 20.

This is our first time and I am seeking advice on what excursions or trips I should take from Hilton Moorea.

Are there any must do’s?

Also, we are returning back to California on June 20 but our flight doesn’t leave until 11:45 pm.

The ferry to Papeete leaves at noon, 1:00, or 2:00 pm. What should we do while waiting for our flight? There’s roughly 10-12 hours of waiting time.

I appreciate your insight, experience, and general advice. Thank you 😊

Money in Tahiti and Moorea

I'm traveling to Tahiti and Moorea soon and I'm wondering what the cheapest and best way to exchange currency from USD to XPF or the currency in Tahiti and Moorea is? Do it in the U.S.? If so, where? Or do it at the airport in tahiti?

Moorea Accomodation Help

Hello, I need some help regarding the following two rental properties in Moorea that I am considering for our one week vacation this summer :

Property 1: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/1040080366649362227

Property 2: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/1108678187334335552

We will be two adults, an active teenager, and a special needs child with mobility issues. The special needs child can walk a little with support but will not be able to sit in a kayak or snorkel. I am attempting to find a place where the teenager has access to kayaking, paddleboarding, and snorkeling, while the other child still has access to calm water for strolling and can see some sea life easily from the front of the rental property. We plan to visit a public beach one of the days, but it would be more convenient if access to calm water is available directly in front of the property.

Which of the above two rental properties would be better considering the following:

  1. Easy access for walking in the water / beach access
  2. Easy access to spotting sea life
  3. Nice sunsets
  4. Safer surrounding area (I am not looking for an isolated area)
  5. Any other useful information

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Work as a Traveler

Hey, I (29, male) am traveling around te world hitchhiking on sailboats. This July I will arrive in Tahiti where I will meet some of my family for the first time ever! Special trip for me. Therefore I would like to stay a while and work to earn some money. I have experience working in hospitality and have been working on charterboats as crew/cook. It's quite difficult to get a general idea about the possibilities there so I'm trying here! I would be happy working in local bars, charter boats, or whatever is available! If you know anything or can give me some tips and pointers I would be very happy! Thanks.

Terevau Ferry Engine Failure

Just a heads up to those traveling to Tahiti with plans of using the Terevau ferry to Moorea. I was told by Albert Transportation that the boat has an engine failure and not currently operational. Our trip is in June, but they are not sure if it will be repaired by that time. They suggested using Aremiti instead.

Dating in Tahiti

Hi everyone. I'm a single man in his 30s traveling to Tahiti for the first this summer.

While not the primary purpose of my trip, I am hoping to meet some single women and go on a date or two while I'm out on the islands.

A few questions:

  • Are there good places to go to meet single women?
  • Is there any dating etiquette I should be aware of in French Polynesia? Any do's and don'ts?
  • What kind of styles are popular out there? Do women tend to prefer guys with longer or short hair (at the moment, my hair is medium long, but I'd say well-groomed)?

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate sub to post this in, but a lot of other subs like r/seduction seemed to be more catered towards the "passport bro" community and I'm trying to avoid those vibes. A lot of the advice I see in those subs seems to be a little sleezy and, at times, straight up disrespectful to women or local cultures. I'm trying to avoid that kind of advice, and felt that maybe this sub, which isn't entirely catered towards dating, might be the way to go.

Also, I am open to hearing suggestions on non-dating related activities as well!

Hotel Manava Beach Question

Hello! My partner and I are planning our honeymoon in French Polynesian next April and we are having trouble deciding where to stay in Mo’orea. We’re planning on 5 nights in Mo’orea, followed by 4 nights in Rangiroa (already booked a lovely, lagoon-front Airbnb), and 2 nights in Tahiti before we fly home.

After researching Mo’orea, we think we’d like to be in an area where you can walk to restaurants, snacks, and shops. The Hotel Manava seems like a great fit - however, I can’t get over what their beach seems to look like. Based on what I can tell from google maps and some video reviews I watched, the overwater bungalows seem to be very close offshore on the beach and therefore block any view. I can’t seem to get over the idea of having a beautiful ocean/lagoon/bay/whatever view on the first nights of our honeymoon.

Does anyone have any recommendations for other accommodations that are on/near a beach AND are walkable to good food options? Or am I overthinking it and the beach at the Manava isn’t that bad? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. We are open to hotels, airbnbs, fares/pensions, etc.

Advice on trying to make a trip for my mom to Tahiti a reality before next cancer scan in Oct

I don't know if anyone can help or has navigated this but I thought I'd give it a shot. My mom finished many months of chemo for pancreatic cancer and got a clean scan. Her next one is in October and because this type of cancer is usually aggressive I want to try to bring her to Tahiti before, just in case.

She has other pre-existing health issues and I would need to get her into a more comfortable airline seat but looking at ATN and United sites business class is between $8,000-$16,000 which just isn't possible for me. I am not sure if travel agents would be helpful on this so I was curious if anyone had input.

For the actual trip, I will bring a wheelchair (she can walk but the wheelchair would be easier) and it looks like the ferry to Moorea is wheelchair accessible but wanted to also see if anyone could share information.

As far as where we would be staying, I would probably do an Airbnb and maybe split between Tahiti and Moorea but the airline costs just have me at a dead stop.

Thanks again for anyone who might have info.

Easy waterfall “hikes” on Tahiti, Bora Bora or Moorea

I have autoimmune arthritis that affects my back, hips and knee. My husband is very active. We would love to be able to visit a waterfall and wondered if any of you could recommend one that is less than an hour walk and that has no steep climbs. My husband is awesome about understanding my limitations, but it would be really nice to be able to do this. He gives up a lot because of my issues and I’d love for him to do this. I can push through the pain for a bit, but steeper hikes and longer ones are too much for me, especially in the heat. Is there an easily accessible waterfall you’ve been to on any of those three islands? I appreciate any recommendations for tours or independent walks.

Also for those who’ve taken jet ski tours or rented them, could you recommend a slower paced one? I saw a you tube video of one and he made it a point to say it was very fast paced, meaning they went fast on the jet skis. I’ve never been on a jet ski and don’t want to fall in the water as I know I’d have a hard time getting back on to it.

Thank you!

Kauai vs Bora Bora

Planning our trip for next year. 1 week either in Tahiti (Moorea or Bora Bora) or Kauai in Hawaii.

I’ve been to Maui and Oahu, and even though Maui is beautiful I got a little bored. We’re in our mid 30s and quite active, enjoy eating out etc. this is for our honeymoon.

Please some advice which place should I choose?

Groceries in Maupiti

Hi! Family of 5 from USA with three children under 6. We will be visiting Maupiti for a week and I’ve just realized that the water at the residence we are renting is not drinkable. Is bottled water readily available at markets? Additionally, does anyone have insight regarding grocery stores and typical items that are available to make simple meals?

Any tips for Maupiti with very young kiddos appreciated!

What’s a good cheeseburger on Moorea?

Been here a week. Loved coco beach , snack mahana, snack Rotui and the amazing smoothie and pura vida food truck (the best food here imo), and Allo pizza twice. Now my Southern California in-n-out cravings are coming on strong and I’m craving a cheeseburger. Any local favorites for a good cheeseburger?

**the dark Vader burger at carmeline is an option.

Luggage storage Tahiti

Hi! Is there any luggage storage facility in Tahiti where we can leave our luggage for a couple of weeks? My husband and I will be coming from another trip with a lot of luggage and it would be costly and difficult for us to carry them with us on the islands. Thank you!

Sikh community in Bora Bora / French Polynesia

Hi there! I’m a person of the Sikh faith. I was wondering if there is any chance that there is a small sized Sikh community in existence on the island? Or perhaps where in French Polynesia there might be some form of Sikh community?

Thank you !

The cost of groceries and living

Hello!

I am a University sutdent, and I will spend the next semester, from september to february (aprox. 6 months) as an exchange student in tahiti. I wonder how much basic groceries and just simply living cost. I won't eat in restaurants or go to bars, because the scholarship money isn't enough xdd. If I do my math right, I will have about 10000 - 12000 XPF per week. I am corious about the basic stuff. 1 liter of milk, 1kg rice, a dozen eggs, 1kg chicken, and a normal sized bread. On average, how expensive are they?

Manava, Hilton or Sofitel for small family holiday?

We are a couple from New Zealand with a 5 year-old. We can't choose between Sofitel, Hilton or Manava on the island of Moorea. We'd likely choose the bungalow on-land option with a small pool or beachfront. We are staying in an AirBnb for the first 7 nights in Tiahuna, then planning to do the luxury resort thing. We are foodies. We aren't that fussy but love a little luxury somestimes. We also prefer an authentic cultural experience over an Americanized resort.

Any recommendations?

Getting a tattoo in Mo’orea or Tahiti?

I’m here in Bora Bora and interested in getting a lasting memory of my trip. We’ll have nearly all day on Friday, May 10th (flight departs at 9pm) and wondering if I’m too late to book something and if any locals on here have a recommendation for how to make this happen?

Papeete for 2 nights

Looking for recommendations for a hotel for 2 nights mid July for Papeete. Won't have a car, and would like a place that would allow walking to get to ferry. Was looking at Fare Suisse, but would appreciate any suggestions.

Trying to book 10 day honeymoon in Bora Bora/Moorea

Hello! Trying to book an amazing honeymoon. Our original plan was to use chase points but it’s still almost 10k for only 5 nights in a bora bora overwater bungalow after using 450k chase points…. Looking at Costco travel for different packages. Which hotels are best for Bora Bora/best views of island, sunset (I heard Conrad is windy and not as nice?) and for Moorea? We are coming from SFO, any tips are much appreciated!

Need suggestions on how to best maximize our remaining time before red eye departure and possibly without a car in Tahiti.

Hi all, Our international flight out of PPT departs saturday evening at 930pm.

We only stayed one evening in Tahiti as the entirety of our stay was in Moorea.

I would appreciate any suggestions on what we should do/seee without burning ourselves out given the following.

  1. We don’t have a car (but we could rent one for a few hours?, but as of now we don’t )
  2. Hotel checkout time at Tahiti Hilton is at 12pm.
  3. Our intl flight departs at 930pm, what time should we be at the airport on a Saturday evening?

So given that… I think we have a 4 maybe 5 hour window? Would appreciate any suggestions. It sounds like we should rent a car for a few hours, but just not sure what to do/where to go Thank you !!

**UPDATE, decided not to rent-a-car, and stuick around the hotel/ ventured to downtown by taxi and walked home.

quick thoughts for those thinking theyll do the same.

  1. if you have the budget and arent intesreted in renting a car and driving around/tiring yourself out before a long redeye flight, I suggest to extend your room til 6pm(its actually 50% of 1 night room reservation).
  2. renting a car for a day is expensive, but is "cheaper" comapred to 50% rate of a 1 night reservation at the hilton, plus this doesnt exactly solve having a place to rest, unless you want to rest in your car somewhere.
  3. you could hang around the resort for free (theyll hold your bags), and use the pool and public shower but some may just not want to do that.
  4. if 9pm or later flight and leaving from the hilton tahiti, being there 2 hours before depart time is MORE than enough time.
  5. 730pm-ish , no traffic, taxi cost for 2 people 3 luggage was 1900 XPF cash only.

POLYNESIAN HISTORY DISCORD SERVER

Hello, I Poiboy, and PInoyKanaka Have created a Polynesian history discord server. we planned and started creation a few days ago and we are thinking of allowing people to join it today as we are ready. Here is the link if anyone is interested: https://discord.gg/ddYRk4MA

this is about Polynesian history, culture, language and events. our main goal was to perpetuate knowledge of of Hawaiian history and culture so people understand it better but then we realized "hey, we need to have the ability to reach more people too" and so, then entirety of the Polynesian history can be discussed about now :)
