Disclaimers

1.Using a tDCS device safely requires (at minimum) a basic understanding of how electric current interacts with the body. If you don't understand why you can be killed by a 9V battery, you probably shouldn't be tDCSing yourself.

2.tDCS (and related technologies) are experimental. In most cases, there are options available for treating medical and psychiatric problems which have more demonstrated efficacy and safety than tDCS. If you are concerned about some aspect of your mental or physical health, please consult a medical professional before using tDCS.

Nothing posted here should be considered valid medical advice, everything is discussed in a strictly scientific context, if you choose to use a tDCS machine, it is your responsibility to ensure that it works correctly and your usage is within reasonable limits.

Could cathodal tDCS replace low-frequency rTMS?

If I stumbled upon a research study that said something like, "Low-frequency rTMS of this brain region during this activity accomplishes x," could I just use cathodal tDCS to accomplish the same effects as long as it is in the same brain region and during the same activity? And if I can't, would another form of tES have a higher chance of "replacing" rTMS for the same effects?

Does electrode orientation matter?

Very new to this tDCS thing and while reading a study that was done it states they used 35 cm^(2) electrodes between F7 and T3 and between T4 and F8. What I have read elsewhere states this means the sponge is 5x7 so would orientation matter and if so would the long end go between the 2 points stated or the short end because orientation is not stated, just that it was placed between these 2 points. TIA

Modify commercial TDCS devices to create HD TDCS?

Dear All,

I am considering creating my own HD-TDCS device by modifying existing commercial TDCS devices. Specifically, I was wondering if it would be a good idea to cut the electrodes so that you have one electrode that can be attached to 4 areas and the other that becomes smaller. However, I do not have a great understanding of advanced physics and I wanted your opinion if this would work and what problems I could potentially run into?

Can vagus nerve dysfunction can cause sexual dysfunctions?

I have genital numbness (also light numbness all over my body),loss of orgasm pleasure(I used have robust orgasm pleasure),delayed Ejaculation ( I have the premature Ejaculation in a good way literally 2weeks ago), constipation, reduced pain sensation (can't feel pain that intensely as before)

These symptoms came in like 2weeks ago out of nowhere..can nerve dysfunction cause these?

Neuromyst vs Flow (Depression, motivation, social anxiety, body issues)

Hey all,

I am based in the UK and I have an ADHD diagnosis. I’ve always struggled with social anxiety and insecurities around my appearance. My anxieties stop me from doing things and I often stay home. This is probably linked to depression as I struggle to find motivation and have seen that I have learned helplessness.

I’m on ADHD medication and it has changed my life in many ways. I’m in a much better place.

I think my depression is sometimes something I turn a blind eye to as I throw myself into work and am high functioning. Social anxiety also holds me back.

I’m wondering if I should get the Neuromyst or Flow for addressing this. With all the montages for Neuromyst, I worry I’d struggle to keep up. I just want something easy that gets me motivated and living my life again. Because I’m in the UK, the Flow device is easy for me to get - although expensive.

Sorry for the essay. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you so much

Neuromyst Pro = BE CAREFUL!!! holy shit... I brainzapped myself once and its not good...

Hi. I think its necessary to share my recent experience to this, cause what happened is definetly not what I expected and definetly not what I wanted...

Yesterday I received the Neuromyst Pro device from USA. I was looking forward to find a cure for my severe ADD and symptoms of depression that occur every no and then. Well everyone wants to be a little bit happier, but you have to know, that I am 30 years old, and never really got my Life in a stable situation with an income and so on. I had high expectations to this device, due to the many positive reviews, and I wanted to finally find smth that makes me not be the "loser son" in the family anymore... well...

I just came home from a 1 hour run, and wanted to chill a little bit. I still had a bit of coffee in my System, but wanted to try to have a little nap. So I set the Device in "Snooze" mode, with 0.5mA to begin with. I imediatly felt, that "something is going on". I quickly became dizzy, and after 15minutes, I began to "hear" a flushing noise inside my head, and felt like I was falling down backwards. At that moment i panicked and ripped the elektrodes off of my head. my heart was beating very strong and fast. I went to the toilet and my thouths began racing. That moment I decided to take a 1mg of Benzodiazepin. I calmed down quite ok, but for the rest of the day I was feeling "different" and could get anything done.

Today I woke up after 12h of sleep, had a coffee and got to university. After 3 hour of work, I was starting to feel suicidal and very anxious. I decided to drive home. The moment I was driving into my home street, I was thinking "Do I even live here...?" I was feeling desoriented and couldnt remember if I live IN THIS STREET! that was the moment I panicked again, and again took a 1mg Benzodiazepin. And thats me, sitting here, writing a reddit review for all the ones who want to try brainzapping, I thought you should know about my experience. I think I will never use it again probably. or maybe in a few month or so.

Right now I feel like im sliding alongside a schizophrenia or any kind of psychotic state of mind. Im scared to "lose my mind". Im pretty sure these feelings will wear of after a few days, but dude... this is not fun.

Please be SUPER CAREFUL with these devices! dont ruin your entire mental wellbeing, just bcs you want to "focus a little bit better" its absolutely not worth it. If you are frequently using it and it benefits you, ok. but dont try to push yourself to the limit with these devices. I think these are very dangerous.

If anyone of you has experiences smth similar, please tell me about it. Im very interested!

Im also very interested how other people with severe ADD and depression are living their lifes.

If anyone can help me, I'd be very happy :/

thanks guys, bye!

Seeking Guidance on tDCS Montages for Mood Improvement

Hey everyone,

I've been going through a tough time due to insomnia caused by tinnitus ( can't sleep no more than 5 hours, it tends to be quite hard to go back to sleep after I wake up), leading to depressive symptoms like anhedonia, apathy, derealisation, depersonalisation, lack of motivation and social isolation. I'd say it used to be a lot worse before, it has somewhat gotten SLIGHTLY better as I've had this for a long while but my daily life and social interactions have been severely affected, and at 22, this isn't how I envisioned my life.

I have a BrainDriver 2.1 tDCS device which I've had for quite a long time but I've been hesitant to use due to concerns about potential negative cognitive effects I've read about in regard to the tDCS process itself. However, considering my current state, I'm feeling more inclined to give it a try as a form of intervention.

I'm particularly interested in trying the F3 anodal and FP2 cathodal montage for mood improvement. What I'm trying to pretty much do is force complete tinnitus habituation and eliminate tinnitus-induced psychological distress, which I think is the root of the problem, via tDCS while combining it with meditation and exercise.

I do think I'm somewhat close to being free from this while accepting that there's no way my tinnitus will be eliminated so I'm trying to permanently remove my brain's negative perception of tinnitus psychologically which has been on autopilot ever since I've had this with it being really hard to take complete psychological manual control myself. Due to this, I suspect I have sensorimotor OCD.

A big question I have though, for those experienced with tDCS, I'm curious about the process of setting up montages/placements. Do you generally look at pictures and try to replicate the placement on your head? Are there any resources or tips you'd recommend for someone new to this?

Also, if anyone has tried this specific montage or has suggestions for other effective montages for mood or cognitive symptoms similar to mine, I'd appreciate hearing your experiences.

Your advice and insights would be incredibly valuable as I navigate this.

Thank you!

Is the NeuroMyst "Snooze" montage the same as Fisher-Wallace?

https://neuromyst.com/montage-guide/#snooze-preset

The placement is the same, but I don't know if the waveform is the same, or if that matters. I posted an image of the Fisher-Wallace waveform in this subreddit a little while ago.

Thanks!

tdcs ruined my life

Last year I decided to go to a clinic in Ukraine to affect anxiety with the tdcs method. 23 procedures were performed. After that, I've had severe headaches for a year now, I live in a constant state of desolation, I don't understand who I am, I can't work and live a normal life. Doctors simply do not know what to do. Maybe you have some tips? Thank you!

UPD: it is important to say that the encephalogram became much worse, in particular, «flashes» appeared

Is the new Neuromyst Pro (Pro Plus) worth waiting for? Does anyone know anything about tiCS and tCFS?

Apparently tICS (transcranial interferential current stimulation) and tCFS (transcranial cross-frequency stimulation) are the 2 new modes that will be incorporated into the new Neuromyst Pro Plus, due to be released next month (May 24). Does anyone know anything about the benefits of these ... (finding it hard to find out much online - and not great with scientific research papers)? I'm interested in buying one of the devices - for anxiety and depression etc. ... but who knows in the future ... Thanks

Neuromyst Pro or Flow? One easy to use - other looks like 1970s manual

I am renting the Flow. It's easy to use. I like it. It's also expensive and has only one montage.

I am looking to buy the Neuromyst - the montage images are both scary and hard to follow. Have you found the electrode placement easy?

Any other buyer beware thoughts? It's so much money to spend...

Flow app - helping to parse between legit sadness and depression

Hi there,

Thought I'd give an update on my third week using the Flow app. The montage is - well I don't remember the terminology, but it's high up on either side of your forehead.

I started feeling much better in the first week, then took a bad dive due to family and relationship issues happening. The next two weeks were really tough thanks to all that was going on and I was worried that the good Flow did was ruined.

However, despite things not being great in my home life, in this third week, I have spotted an improvement. In particular the ability to differentiate between real sadness and depression. Does that make sense?

For example, I woke two mornings ago feeling utterly bereft. This is not unusual. But this time, I was able to sit with it throughout the day and work out that this sadness was in fact perfectly 'normal'. Something triggering had happened the night before. Anyone would have felt sad thanks to this. Flow is giving me some space between the sadnesses, rather than an overall sadness that the lousy events 'add to' - if that makes any sense.

I'm gonna keep going!

Some advice...

Hey guys!

I have heard for tdcs and decised to give it a go for anxiety/depression and ocd.

I have purchase a BrainDriver and been doing the f3(+) f4(-) for a month and a week. I do it daily , 20 min, 1.5 power

I feel so sad that unfortunally, not for me...i have tried as having really bad reaction to SSRI, and while therapy greatly helps, still fimd myselp suffering with a lot of ruminations...

Unfortunally have to stop as developed some weird thoughs (passive suicidal thoughts) and my mood tanked down and anxiety spiked up...

Im not sure if totally due to tdcs, as i have started st johns worth 2 months ago, but feel pretty sad :(

Have anyone experienced this?

Thank you

Shoulder and cheek placement - where exactly do they go and how do they stay?

I have an Activadose device that I am hoping to use more often. I have been using the montage guides here: https://tdcs.com/montage-guide/

But am wondering about shoulder placements and LC.

Accelerated learning (DARPA) has anode F10 placement and cathode LS.

  • Where on the left shoulder does it go? At the base of where my shoulder meets my neck? The middle?
  • How are you sticking it on there?

ADHD Impulse Control has anode Fz and cathode left cheek

  • Where on the cheek are you placing it?
    • Apple? Middle?
  • How do you get it to stay on your cheek?

Thanks for the help. I tried google first and there isn't details. There is probably a TDCS A-Z guide out there somewhere, but I haven't found it yet.

(by the way... not sure if it is the placebo effect, I have felt more focused in the days since starting... this is great!)

Depression montages inducing palpitations

I do F3+/F4- and F3/fp2 and they help with depression, specifically with inducing level-headedness and clarity of thought. However I noticed that every single time I use these montages, without fail I will get some palpitation within the next 6-48 hours of a session.

Does anybody else experience this or know why it happens?

How to decrease skin irritation?

I'm using Brain Premier which has sponge electrodes. I'm starting to feel some irritation even when I'm not using using them. The psychological benefits are great so I'd like to know how to decrease the irritation aside from using is for shorter periods, less often or with lower current.

Best tDCS & tACS montages for ADD / depression / anxiety

I have ADD non-hyperactive (ADHD-PI) mimicking symtopms of wrecked dopaminergic state.

Symptoms:

  • Lack of motivation
  • Overwhelm!
  • Depression
  • Anxiety (not social anxiety)

It's less of a focus issue for me. It's more the depression and lack of motivation, not even getting to the focusing part.

I came across a long time ago some literature that made me conclude that for ADHD or on particular ADD, perhaps stimulating F4 rather than F3 might be more beneficial. So F4+/F3- but I might be wrong that was a long time ago I think it showed enhanced focus.

Being that I have both depression and anxiety and ADD things can get more complicated.

Anyway I was wondering if people here with non hyperactive ADHD and low mood found tDCS or tACS more effective?

Thinking about these in particular:

tDCS F3+/Fp2- ('Smile' montage on Neuromyst)

tDCS F4+/F3- ('Focus' montage on Neuromyst)

tDCS F3+/F4- (used by Flow)

tACS F3/F4 10hz ('Positive' on Neuromyst)

I have used both in the past. Didn't seem. To have gotten benefits so I stopped. But I am now beginning to try again as my mental health deteriorated so I'm revisiting this.

I'll add that I am low bodyfat six pack, working out, eating healthy. I am medicated.

Thanks

Recent articles on tDCS and Stress

Mood

No impact of tDCS on stress-induced state rumination and no influence of executive control and trait rumination: A double-blind sham-controlled within-subjects study (PDF)

Transcranial direct current stimulation is more effective than pregabalin in controlling nociceptive and anxiety-like behaviors in a rat fibromyalgia-like model

These are hyper-specific enough to not be technically in conflict, but... another bag of mixed results for tDCS. At this point it's obvious something is seriously funky and we probably need to stop and figure out why.
