I’ve been reading up on rods for Southern California surf fishing. I’ll be targeting surf perch and halibut, and throwing Carolina rig and lucky craft 5/8oz. I’ve narrowed it down to Okuma Hawaiian Custom 9’ 3/8-1oz, and Okuma Rockway SP 8’6 1/4-5/8oz. Any input is appreciated.
Chasing the bones finally paid off after a few days they finally moved in close enough to catch a few. Such a fun fish to catch
Neighbor gave me this unused Okuma Coronado 5500 spooled with 30lb braid, unused in box, so I guess I need a new rod to pair it with
26.5” Red caught in a blue blitz, 200m east of point. 1oz Hopkins spoon, Diawa Saltist MQ 3000, CCP 10’ 1-4oz.
My wife, father, and one year old will be right across from the beach for a week, and I wanted to do some surf fishing. Looking for advice on what species to target in September. Would love to keep and eat anything within regulation, but just fishing and catching anything would be fun enough for us. Any advice on target species and rigs would be very much appreciated.
Hi everyone,
Looking for some reccomendations for a surf fishing rod and reel for snapper in port Phillip bay. Cheers!
I know… I know… but I got 2-12’ beef sticks for basically free. Giving one to my buddy who fishes with me often. Not expecting much out of them but would love to use them as longer distance bait soakers.
What reel sub $50 should I go with? Have my eyes on a cheap Okuma Avenger Abf 65 or a Penn (either wrath, pursuit or fierce, whatever I can find cheaper) in a 6000. Would love to be under $50 for the reel. Not expecting it to be super high performance or last years.
Open to any other suggestions. I have nicer rods for lures and a spinfisher 10’ for bait but would love to have a good catapult set up for dirt cheap.
12inch
I’m looking to buy a reel in about the 150 dollar range to match with my Tsunami Trophy II 8’6” Medium rod 1/2oz - 1 1/2oz. I was thinking of the spheres or something like that but I’m pandering if I should spend the extra 80 dollars for a Stradic C 5000?
Caught it surf fishing at Lynnhaven Inlet in Virginia Beach.
Sorry if the picture is not super easy to follow.
I recently got into rock fishing (10 foot ugly stick with a penn battle 3 6000 reel, 60lb braided main, 40lb fluorocarbon leader). However, I also have been wanting to try out surf fishing. I stopped at a beach yesterday to try my luck for some halibut, tied on a drop shot rig + swim bait and MAN my wrist and shoulders were aching after an hour or so. Does it make sense to get a lighter set up or is this just part of the deal when it comes to the surf? Any advice would be appreciated, thank you!
Hello, So far I have been using braided line for all my reels. It's great when I want to cast far or see the activity on the line but I'm wondering if I'm loosing opportunities because of it.
The oder day I was fishing by the pier and I wasn't getting any bites then an experience fisherman came. Within an hour he caught like a dozen fish from various species.
We talked a bit about his setup and the only difference was the type of line he was using , what's your opinion on that?
Thanks!
Was fishing today and had two fish break off my braid (relatively new 50lb) quite a bit before the rig. I imagine these were very large fish because I was catching slot drum with the same rod and had no issues. I do however hate the fact I didn’t get a chance to even fight the fish as the line was broken after about two quick but powerful pulls while in the rod holder. I was running a Carolina Rig with the drag set just enough to resist weight action, so there was plenty of give on the line.
Would a “shock leader” be the solution to this issue? I typically tie the swivel on the Carolina rig to the braid and haven’t had problems with the braid breaking until today.
Thanks!
My background-
I am actually an avid fly fisherman. I know how to spin fish but don't know enough to pick out a good rod. I have a 10 wt fly rod I use for beach fishing but would like a similar setup in spin form for conditions that don't lend them selves tofly fishing.
I plan to beach fish central America and Baja but would also possibly use it for stripers. I would like the rod to be multiple pieces so I can travel with it.
I have a 400 dollar budget for rod and reel.
Target species would be roosters, jacks, predator fish etc. casting decent sized poppers and stick baits
Would prefer to be on the lighter side of things but nothing too light obviously.
Rods Ive found-
Okuma rockaway travel rod RST-S-1003MH
Diawa ardito ARDT1105MFS-TR
Reels (im feeling pretty good about this reel)
Diawa Bg 6500
I'm in SoCal. Today was a super hot day.
Was out surf fishing in the morning as usual, nothing crazy. Came in early as the heat started getting unbearable, and was able to take the rod apart to fit in my car on my drive home.
I did stop by a couple stores on my way home, with the rod still disassembled baking in my car in the parking lot. But it couldn't have been for more than 30 minutes, and the rod was disassembled.
I get home to clean the rod and reel, and set the rod in temporarily. And in the process I accidently reeled in the swivel at the end of my line into the tip, but it wasn't that hard. And I'm thinking that pulled the 2nd half of the rod in, and now I can't for the life of me take it apart.
I've spent the last several hours trying everything. Tried the ice, tried the behind the knee thing, tried the rubber gloves, tried pliers through a towel. This thing won't even turn a squeek.
Is my rod destined for retirement?
I'm planning to go out to a pier in Long Island Sound. I've only fished saltwater a couple times without much luck so I want to check if my plan is reasonable.
I'm planning on using a minnow trap and then nose hooking them on a #2 Owner mutu light circle or a #6 gamakatsu octopus. Planning on using a fish finder rig with a 1oz pyramid sinker, and about 18 inches of 10lb test to the hook. Does this sound like it would work and should I just launch it out there, loosen my drag, and wait? I also have some frozen shrimp and cut white perch that I could use.
Thank you all in advance
I'm heading out to half moon bay to try surf fishing for the first time.
Any beach suggestions? I'll be throwing 1/2 - 1.5 oz lures. I saw miramar beach mentioned.
Looking forward to getting the line wet at least :)
Gearing up for this fall in the northeast. I had an old rubber pair for about 10 years but they cracked and leaked. What are something that would hold up without breaking my wallet?
Daughter caught her first blue fish this morning. We are slaying it! Almost out of bait and we started around 9. Nice way to start a Sunday morning.
I'll be targeting lighter stuff casting plugs and artificials from the surf and occasional boat trip (fluke, stripers, etc). Jigging from piers also in the plan. I just purchased a Penn Battle IV 4000 series reel and thinking of pairing that with a 7' Jigging World 1-4 Oz rod (20-40 lb). Is this a safe bet?
Already have a bit of a cheaper reel at about 60 bucks (Carbon X 4000) loaded up with 20# braid. I was looking for a higher quality and bit bigger reel that can handle stripers and blues in Long Island and Brooklyn, medium sizes only ever caught smaller ones (7lb blue and 4lb striper) and I want to try and go after some larger ones (also and lure recommendations with sizes would be appreciated) for the reel I'm thinking of staying in on or under $150. Thanks for any info y'all may provide!

Looking to get a fly setup for catching Corbina and surf perch In Southern California. I’m not sure what size I should get ? 6wt? 7wt ? Also should I get a reel that is 5/6/7 weight or 6/7/8 weight ? Any help is appreciated . Thanks
Looking for some insight on these rods I’m looking for a new 8ft surf rod to catch stripers on from rocky back bays and some light beach fishing with mackerel but I’m mostly going to be throwing soft plastics and buck tails and plugs the normal idea but between the two which would be better for long days of lure fishing with small amounts of light bait fishing
