The Basho schedule typically runs from 9am to 6pm (Japan time). Juryo dohyo-iri is just after 2pm with the action starting sometime after that, and makuuchi dohyo-iri is at 3:30pm, with the bouts starting at 4pm usually. This changes on senshuraku (day 15), where things typically start earlier to make sure there's time for the award ceremony. Times may vary.

Don’t get me wrong, I love being able to follow every basho with the daily highlights from NHK, but some of their turns of phrase used by the commentators really make me laugh - or are just repeated a lot.
Any other favourites?
Is there somewhere I can watch the entire basho days? because on the NHK website and YouTube only the first day is complete, the other days they cut and only leave the battles, I would like to see the ritualistic part too
Am I overthinking that the recent underperformance of Takerufuji and Onosota may be tied to injuries?
Only sources at the moment are in Japanese.

He passed away on 11/12, it was only announced earlier today.
This video was my first introduction to Mita! When i found out he joined Futagoyama I was shocked and happy!

Sorry if this is a daft question.
I’ve gotten to grips with the banzuke and how promotion/demotion is decided (the wins-losses guideline etc) but does it work the same even in sandanme, jonidan etc where there are so many wrestlers and so few matches?
For instance, Enho is at Sd56W. If he goes 7-0, does he really only have the chance to get up to ~Sd49? That would mean to get out of Sandanme entirely would take about thirteen PERFECT bashos from bottom to top.
I’m sure I’m getting something wrong. Please let me know :)
As we all know, the general requirement for Yokozuna promotion is back-to-back wins or a strong JY/Y combo. After 10 days of the Kyushu basho, both Hoshoryu and Kotozakura are looking like strong yusho contenders. Is it possible that they could both be promoted to Yokozuna after the January basho? For instance, say Kotozakura wins Kyushu in a playoff with Hoshoryu, and then the opposite happens in January, with Hoshoryu beating Kotozakura for the yusho in a playoff. They would both have a Y and a playoff-loss JY.
Has a double Yokozuna promotion ever happened before, and is it even possible?
Hello!
I hope everyone is having a good day!
I wanted to know if there is an ongoing thread about this, or can we start one here?
Does anyone remember a series that aired on HDNet about Kotooshu's attempt to make it as a rikishi? It would have aired in the late 2000s after he had reached ozeki. It was my pathway to sumo and I've never been able to find it or even find anything about it since watching way back when. I'd love to watch it again now, knowing what I know today, and as I recall, it had plenty of HD footage of Kotooshu but also of Asashoryu at his peak. Asashoryu was cast as the foil to Kotooshu's ambition to push beyond ozeki to yokozuna.
How is Enho doing? Where is he? I remember him years ago was doing great bouts.
Altough I'm not particularly a sumo fan I was visiting the grand sumo tournament in Fukuoka since I randomly visited the city at the same time. When I left I saw these two guys waiting for the bus and they were very kind and took a picture with me. Now I'd like to know who they are so I can start supporting them but unfortunately I couldn't figure it out myself so I'd be glad if anyone who is into sumo could tell me who they are? (the picture was taken on the 2nd day at around 1.30pm if thats helpful)
Chiyomaru is currently at the bottom of Juryo and having a terrible tournament that started 0-10. With a likely demotion to mid Makushita do you see him retiring?
If so what do you thunk is the most likely kabu he Wil take/what do we know (maybe there is some Japanese news of him acquiring one)?
The option I find more likely are:
-Jinmaku: the current holder is 64 and part of the same Ichimon
-Oyama: the current holder is part of the same stage and is borrowing him from a retired oyakata (as far as we know, and kabu sell is not something that is made public most of the time) this means the kabu might actually be owned by an active rikishi like Chiyomaru
-Dekiyama: became vacant earlier this year and again was in posseyiin of a non scrive rikishi. But the last owner was part of a different Ichimon
-Kiriyama: same as above
They suddenly dissappeared when i was watching the Futagoyama Stable videos in order
They’re names are Miyabi (pink) and i couldnt find the guy beside him’s name
He used to be the top prospect, sanyaku level some would say. Now he's only above average at juryo. He's lost a lot of muscle as well. Is it because of the surgery, he's oyakata losing the stable and being treated badly, injuries or a combination of all of this.
I think he'll comeback in a few years he's young after all.
What do you guys think?

Kinda weird for a Komusubi not to fight all the Ozeki.
The uncalled matta (false start) in the Hoshoryu match against Abi on day 7 brings this back to memory.
I have watched many matches with foreign, especially Mongolian rikishi, which they lost due to questionable calls, non calls or even mono-ii decisions. And I do not recall them winning matches that way.
The officiating seems decent in most cases, but mistakes do happen in other matches as well.
But considering the much smaller number of foreign born rikishi, it seems significant.
In a sport that is often ruined by injuries I find it odd that they haven't redesigned the Dohyo to prevent more long falls to the floor. It just seems wrong that Mitakeumi took that nasty fall and now is very obviously trying to compete injured because he's still in the Yusho race. Have they ever thought about switching to a safer Dohyo?
So I’m watching through NHK Japan which is just to say I’m only just now watching Day 7 results.
Abi vs Hoshoryu is the second time this year that Hoshoryu has lost when it seems very obvious that his opponent started before his hands were on the clay and no one seemed to raise any fuss over it.
I’m assuming I’m missing some context so could anyone help explain what’s going on?
(Also, why doesn’t Hoshoryu mix up his timing to avoid those instances?)
hello! new to sumo here
can you guys recommend me some sumo documentaries videos?
it felt like i have watch most of the sumo documentaries on youtube and there's probably alot of documentary that got deleted from youtube
i would love to watch asashoryu (my sumo GOAT) documentary if he has ever got one
thanks!
I felt that after Hakuho retired and especially with Terunofuji constantly out injured there has been a bit of a power vacuum in Makuuchi for a while which seems to be starting to fill up. The top division seems so strong right now with the Waka brothers both healthy, the rise of prospects such as Kotozakura and Hoshoryu, strong veterans such as Abi, Takayasu, and Daieshi still performing well and of course Onosato and Takerufuji who I honestly believe in the near future will usher in an amazing new era with two rival Yokozuna the likes of which we haven’t seen since Hakuho and Asashoryu - I think the top division is the strongest it’s been for quite a while!
In the A box seats on the side of the arena labeled "opposite" in the program- this would be where the two judges and the on deck gyogi sit- one of the boxes seats is actually a small announcers station with a microphone and some electrical controls. Yet I never saw the person sitting there speak into the microphone a single time. He was wearing an earpiece and taking notes but I never witnessed him using the microphone.
Who is this man (it was not the same guy the entire time).
Thank you.
Today, before the makuuchi bouts, one of the gyogi displayed and read our a long list of papers which he them handed to an attendant. Can anyone tell me what those were? I don't remember this happening on Saturday.
I am in Japan for the first time and attending the basho on two days ago and today (Saturday and Monday)
Thanks.
Sorry for typo, should read announcements, obviously.
