Sumo wrestling in June 2025

Does anyone have any ideas where to see any type of Sumo Wrestling in either Tokyo or Osaka in June 2025? I know there probably won't be tournaments, but maybe amateur. My husband really wants to attend and I can't find anything online so if anyone has attended something less professional, that would be great!

Thank you in advance!

Samurai Spirit - Sumo (Special Guest: The 69th Yokozuna, Hakuhō Shō)

NOTE: This episode of "Samurai Spirit" was recorded a year or two after Hakuhō was promoted to Yokozuna (2008 or 2009). If you know the exact date, please post it in the comments. It will be of great help. Anyway, enjoy this episode.

After this whole situation involving Takakeisho and Onosho, I think this cover carries much greater symbolism now... Damn, that hurts so much...

Another grand Tadpole bows out due to injury. Just like Takakeisho he was 28 years old.

Not staying within the NSK either. Goodbye and good luck, Onosho-zeki.

Hakuho amongst the greats

I've been reading up on sports stats as you do when you're drunk and I really think Hakuho holds his own amongst the greatest of the greats. I'd put him up there with "The Don" Don Bradman in cricket, "$imoney" Simone Biles, and "The Great One" Wayne Gretsky. But Hakuho himself doesn't seem to have his own legendary nickname. Have y'all heard any for him? If not what would you call the greatest who ever was in this fine sport.

Fun fact: at his kanreki dohyo-iri (when he turned 60) in 2015, Chiyonofuji was accompanied by two active Yokozuna as his attendants: Hakuho as his sword-bearer (or Tachimochi) and Harumafuji as his dew-sweeper (or Tsuyuharai). Of all the Kanreki dohyo-iri, only Chiyonofuji's achieved this honor.

I’m in Tokyo the next few days…

I know there’s no tournament on, but I’m looking to do some Sumo adjacent stuff.

I’m a really big Midorifuji fan. He never gives up!

What are my chances of going to a stable? What about the best place for some Sumo merch? What kind of Sumo stuff might I be able to access.

Will be in Osaka after for a few days if that helps.

Help Me Enjoy Sumo Again

So context to this is effectively after VaatiVidya had a sponsor for audible or something he talked about Little Book of Ikigai, at some point Ken Mogi talks about his love for Sumo and talks about Asashoryu (fairly tbh give the time of writing). After watching clips of highlights, I got in as Hakuho was on the run down, a year or two before his last tournament which I still think is a truly legendary moment in sporting history.

I was Big into sumo, I loved talking about it and on the off-chance of someone enjoying sumo who I talked to at uni, I would love talking about Takayasu and Hakuho to anyone who'd listen (they mostly didnt enjoy my yammering but nevertheless).

Post-Hakuho, I dont feel a Want to watch it. I dont especially want to watch a Yokozuna (if Terunofuji is even still active) seemingly become weaker and struggle more as all of the people i enjoyed and related some part of my personal experience to (Takayasu = Hairy Dad who deserves the best, My dad is hairy whom I love dearly).

I dont especially care for engaging in high-level political drama about the JSA only publicly condemning bad behaviour when it's exposed ans Not Really seeming to address the crux of what resulted in a professional Wrestler dying in the ring and having his death certificate signed what 4 weeks later. I dont especially care for Hakuho almost certainly doing wrong as a Yokozuna and him seemingly getting more flak than anyone else through both his career as a rikishi & yokozuna ans then as a coach.

I guess I'm kind of disillusioned to sumo in a way and I want to engage in it, but I feel like the barriers, both explicit with the structure & behaviour of its administration, and implicit with an almost cultural isolationism, are kind of diminishing my ability to watch Sumo and not think "Damn I enjoyed this way more in the before times and it might not Necessarily have been just because of Hakuho"

Edit; Yes I was drunk and probably (almost certainly) being a bit melodramatic, even still I would like to add:

I wouldnt be making this post if I didn't Want to enjoy sumo and enjoy discussing a sport that I'm otherwise enthusiastic for. That said, given the drama and politics stuff and my understanding - which may be inaccurate because i havent checked Fully in a while - that the JSA seemingly wants to undermine sumo stuff on YT & streaming platforms, I'm out of the loop and everyone who isn't Terunofuji is new to me and I basically know nothing about them.

The sport being niche as it is means that the people who are into it - ie in Here - know the State Of The Game and know how to be enthusiastic for it, an enthusiasm which I - up until pretty much yesterday - had lost from something resembling a hiatus. "What's exciting, sell me on the Current State so I can enjoy sumo with the rest of you guys, I'm out of the loop" is basically the objective of the post. I wasn't trying to be disparaging, I was explaining my current feelings towards it and I was hoping that You People might be able to help me to relight my own enthusiasm.

Western Culture and Sumo

Just watched James Bond film "You only live twice" again for the first time since I was much younger, It has a small cameo by Sadonayuma (a Yokazuna who won 6 Emperors Cups) This is my first memory of Sumo I can't think of many western cultural references to Sumo apart from Paul McCartney and the former President of France!

Who is the greatest sumo striker in your opinion?

The striker in question is a rikishi, who heavily utilizes palm strikes, elbow strikes, etc.

Terunofuji's training bouts against the three ōzeki.

During the winter tour, Terunofuji was filmed in Takarazuka doing keiko with the three ōzeki. Will we see him in january? Bonus hairdressing at the end.

Some info on the event here: 宝塚市制70周年 令和六年 冬巡業 大相撲宝塚場所 I'd love to attend one of this smaller regional events!

(Serious Question) Since the 2000s, most foreign sumo wrestlers are Mongolian and with the exception of Kisenosato, all Yokozuna come from Mongolia. What explains this Mongolian dominance in sumo wrestling?

As the title itself may have already shown, the Mongolians have recently become a dominant force in sumo, dominating practically all ranks of the elite division, especially Yokozuna (Asashōryū, Hakuhō, Harumafuji, Kakuryū and Terunofuji) and Ozeki (mainly Hōshōryū and Kirishima), which leads me to the following question: how did Mongolia become the dominant country within the sumo? How do Mongolian rikishi differ from Japanese rikishi, to the point of justifying their dominance in recent years?

Compilation video of Fujinokawa Takeo: the “honey badger” of sumo. He was active in the 60’s-70’s and despite being only 238 lbs, he utilized a potent mix of technique, guile, and unrelenting aggression to overcome his heavier opponents.

Help me understand

I have recently been watching the Nivember sumo highlights on YouTube through NHK World Japan. I have just now discovered that all their highlights have been deleted or removed bc the videos aren't even in my watch history anymore. Why were they removed? I was watching a highlights video last night.
