Is 30 hours full time work?

I’m 19 and the ideal of working 40 hours terrifies me and it’s not the life I want. I was simply wondering if one could become salary and be paid for 30 hours a week (specifically government work) I’m in Canada!

Advice on how to return to the student government

I was in the council until I made a mistake (I wrote on a desk) that I highly regret and got removed by the designated teacher. I would like advice on how to apologize and rejoin if even possible. I recognize the fact that I may not be allowed to return, but I would still like advice.

Ideas for Events

Hello all! I know this sub isn’t super active but after searching it seems to be the only social media presence I can find for student governments. I am getting inducted to my colleges SGA tomorrow at President! Woohoo! But I am running into roadblocks when it comes to getting engagement. My school only does two major events a year (one for each semester) and I’d like to do more. The issue I’m facing is they need to be low cost. If anyone has ideas I would love to hear them. Also anything you did or saw other SGA’s do that was good. Thank you so much!!!

My High School replaced/removed student government

Okay. I know this is a college student government Reddit but this was the only place where I could ask on Reddit. So my school, a charter school in LAUSD decided to "merge" a club called Link Crew that was originally supposed to introduce new students to the school. However, my Vice Principal "merged" Link Crew and student government together and halted student government before new executive members could be determined. Now, this Link Crew seems to have replaced student government, restricted it to only 20 members, and you have to apply and be interviewed by teachers/the vice principal. From what I heard from members inside Link Crew, they never knew that it was going to transition into student government. The Vice Principal suddenly decided to do this right when she learned about how new executive members were going to be chosen soon.

Some of you might ask why my Vice Principal is making changes, my Principal seems to be very busy with meetings so the Vice Principal seems to have taken the wheel for her to get some things off her plate. I have contacted the Vice Principal at least twice, asking if it was really true that only Link Crew members can run for executive positions, but she would only respond to my second question, "Am I able to join Link Crew", which was answered as a no, stating that there is no room.

I'm just curious if this is even right for the school to do this. Essentially they just created a one-party system where only people from Link Crew can run for executive positions. Is there a way for me to fight this? I mean a petition could be weak and my school does not have a PTA, so is there a stronger base that I can argue? I have looked at the Student Bill of Rights from LAUSD, but not too sure if it violates anything. Please help.

Seniors During COVID

Hi everyone, my grade is graduating in 2021 so we are approaching our senior year. We are trying to make senior year special but with COVID it’s very hard. We are having half days, each half of the alternating between morning and afternoon. I’d appreciate any ideas on how to keep the grade united and make it feel special since we are losing so many of our senior privileges.

Recurring Student Government Timeline

Hello! I am creating an operations manual/SOP for a student government organization (meaning high turnaround, necessitating simplicity), and the majority of the guides within the operations manual occur on a recurring yearly basis. I have created all of the documentation for the operations manual, but am now looking for a way to create a spreadsheet/timeline that shows the various steps in both a categorical and chronological fashion (so it can be referenced by successors throughout the year), with each step either providing additional details or linking to a document which does. The system would need to have the capability to handle at least 300 tasks.

I've been trying to use Microsoft Project, but it's not fitting my needs (and it isn't free, which is problematic for passing it along to future student government administrations).

I'm looking for something which:

  1. Provides "tasks" and "subtasks" or some variation of nesting ability (preferrably at least 4 levels deep)
  2. Can dynamically change dates based on set parameters (first Monday of April each year for example)
  3. Can handle at least 300 tasks, and can provide space for a description or link to a document for each task

I've tried looking this up online, but can't seem to find anything. Would any of you have any resources/tips for accomplishing this? Thank you!

Trying To Compile Colleges With A Specific Program

Hey!

So I'm part of a student congress and I'm trying to put together an incentivised study program where students can go to have monitored study time and earn points towards rewards for the time they spend there. The closest thing I can find to what I am looking for is something EMU offers here:

https://www.emich.edu/academic-support-programs/hsc/eagle-rewards/index.php

I was wondering if anyone else knows of any other colleges that may have a similar program?

Thanks!! :)

Ban Online Access Codes

Hello all,

I'm working with my student government to ban professors from requiring students to purchase online access codes in order to complete homework/quizzes. However, I need research showing other universities that have enacted such a policy, and as of yet, I have been unable to find any.

If your university does this, can you leave a comment with your university name?

Thanks, everyone!

Alternate Election Model for High School Student Leadership Group

For the past ten plus years, rising seniors interested in participating in the senior student leadership group at our school have been selected by votes cast by both their classmates and any faculty that has taught them during their years in the upper school. To apply, these students submit a resume, a statement of interest, and a service project proposal, all of which can be reviewed by those casting votes. Of late, some have felt that this process has veered more toward the popularity contest, and as a result, we are looking for some alternate, equitable election models that might better fit our need.

Roughly 60 of the 160 rising seniors apply for the program and only 12 are chosen at the end of the process. The selection committee needs the ability to review/discuss the final selections to evaluate students who may have academic or social concerns that could affect their election to the leadership group.

I've been wondering if there is some kind of staged elections process where a group of twenty or thirty are identified, then interviewed, and then voted upon again. Or possibly, something with the ranked voting that was used in ME during the midterms, but I'm a little at a loss as to what our other options might be. I'd be very grateful to hear any and all ideas of how we might make this process more equitable for all involved while still winding up with a wonderful group of seniors to lead the class.

Any advice on fixing corrupt student governments?

We are the opposition to the establishment of the Student Federation of the University of Ottawa (SFUO), likely the most corrupt student government in Canada. We think our 2018 general elections were tampered with to allow the establishment to continue their rule. In short, running candidates in elections may not be a successful way of enacting change.

Does anyone have suggestions as to other ways we can improve the situation?

I am now a treasurer for a student run cultural organization at my college, any advice?

Hey all. I’m a freshman at a public university where I was recently “hired” into a student cultural organization as the treasurer, that’s set up somewhere between a non-profit organization and a student government. Now, I don’t have much student government experience, if any, so does anybody have any tips, tricks, or advice they could give me to do my job well as the treasurer? Thanks.

Hello all, I was just wondering what kind of financial control your specific student governments have on campus.

In the UW-System Students have control over allocating segregated fees to over 200 different units on campus in the amount of $14 million. What are other schools have financial controls/policies that they feel are unique or especially beneficial to students.

At my campus (University of Wisconson-Stevens Point) I serve on the Environmental and Sustainability Issues Committee and we are trying to get a Farmers Market on campus.

So we have about 9500 students and we are trying to host a farmers market on our campus within the coming year. Does anyone elses school have a farmers market on campus? If so, how successful is it?

Model High School Constitution (original content)

Hey all, I wanted to share with you a project I've been working on for the past few months. It's a model high school constitution and overall student government system. I started making it for my own high school, but graduated before I could implement it. Still think it's a good idea, so I want to publish it here.

Here is the google docs link. It's still a draft, so there might be errors. It's a working document, and I'm always updating it as things come to mind. This constitution lays out a general plan, so it assumes that a comprehensive set of bylaws will accompany it.

A little bit about myself and why I started this: I was the Student Advocate of my high school for two years and saw gross inefficiencies of the organizational structure. My school used the fairly standard (at least in my area) system of having an elected officer board of President, VP, Secretary, and Treasurer for each class and then one for the overall student government (which we called ASB). In addition, there was a vast number of appointed commissioners and other officers.

This system just didn't work well. There were 20 elected officials, and each student voted for 8 positions. This led to very few contested positions and no chance of a not "popular" student winning any of the first past the pole elections. In fact, candidates often just figured out which positions were open and ran for ones they truly didn't want, just to have a guaranteed spot.

VPs, Secretaries, and Treasures didn't have many tasks associated with their positions anyways. The vast majority of their work was just doing random things for the respective President. The few official duties they did have (taking minutes, doing budget) were not done well because the people elected had no skills applicable to their own position. Commissioners for various tasks were appointed based on their skills, but there was no logical reporting or accountability structure.

The vast majority of people were in "class" positions, so the central ASB was weak, even though it logically carried out far more work.

My Model ASB is built to address these issues. The top organ of the ASB is the Senate. It's the main decision making body made up of the six elected senators, four class presidents, ASB President and VP, and six appointed executive officers.

All six senators are elected in one big race. This increases actual competition, and gives not "popular" students a chance to represent minority opinions. Senators serve both the main ASB, and their respective classes.

The ASB President is the nominal head of the student body, but business is actually carried out by his executive council. The VP is not elected in a separate race, and instead is the second place winner. This gives the VP the important role of playing a counter balance or "opposition leader" in the student government. The six executive officers are appointed and in charge of broad departments. Department leaders would be chosen from people who have have experience. Each department oversees many projects/responsibilities. Students can sign up to work as non-officer staff in these departments and work their way up. This creates a centralized reporting structure and strengthens the central government. A few interesting notes on the substantive departments:

  • Secretary-Treasurer is a combined position that deals with the various internal processes of the ASB.

  • Student Advocate is officer is a representative for student's rights and works closely with the school administration to keep them in check. He is also the main legal officer of the ASB for internal matters.

Class councils are led by elected Presidents. VPs have been eliminated as they do not do much. Instead, an appointed Class Clerk is the second person in charge and also has the duties of Secretary and Treasurer. The rest of each class council consists of either the elected senators, or appointed commissioners (for those classes that have fewer senators elected). Class councils may also receive their own staff, or share it with the executive departments.

In elections, students only vote for three races (ASB President, Class President, and Senate) this makes elections far more competitive, and gives voters a much stronger decision making power.

There are several other features in the constitution which I could elaborate on if needed. The main one that'll stick out is the strong declaration of rights at the beginning, proclaiming the liberties of students.

That's the gist of it. I'm very open to commentary and encourage people to consider actually implementing or adapting this constitution to their own school. The constitution is published by Alek Klimek under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International license.
