Hi! I'm 29M with 1,80m height and 96,7 kg weight.
I discovered this sub recently and as I'm a little overweight, seeing you big guys doing strength training hyped me up.
So I wanted to know what would be a good 1h training for a strongman-like training.
I have a ABC training set up and wanted a D-day comprised of deadlines, squats, and all other new-to-me exercises I'm seeing here. I'm thinking of this D-day as being a overall body day.
I've searched a bit here but couldn't find a list of main common exercises.
Deadlifts wipe my cns. Long story short, I’m just going to save it for comps. What exercises would be helpful for maximizing deadlifts? What rep scheme and weight choice would you suggest? Also, sticking point is off the floor.
Edit: thanks for the comments! Consensus is sending it at comp is dumb. I had a coach for over a year trying to get my dl up, I haven’t made much progress. There are dysfunctional movement patterns and imbalances that have improved that I’m still working on. The program varied with a top set once a week. I have all my notes at home and can post it here when I get home.
Try to stimulate the reverse hyper with ROGUE GHD and dip belt…turn out that my fingers hurt the most… lol Anyway had much fun with it 😆
Hey everyone,
I train during my lunch break at work, since we have a gym on site, so usually I have an hour to train. Is that enough time to be able to follow Mitchell Hooper’s “Powerbuilding” program?
Also, do you think that would be a good program for my goals? I’ve been lifting for a few years consistently, and have reached PRs of 330 squat, 250 bench, 375 deadlift. I’m 6’1, 193lbs, at around 22% bf. My aims are to build strength and size.
Thank you so much.
Feedback on sticking points, technique, stance, hand width...anything. insights all appreciated.
Hey! So I can strict barbell ohp 100kg for 3 reps and push press 6 reps, with barbell push press is not a problem, but when I do log lift (personal best 105kg strict, 100kg with momentum) I can’t push press at all, what could be the problem? Or how can I transfer my barbell push press to log push press. Thank you.
Im 5'6" 32 years old and 170lbs on a good day and want to beat the odds and be the next Darren Sadler but lack direction on training and after leaving a toxic training group need help so i come here. i know im older and behind the ball but have the mind to do it.
Hi fellow strongman,
I am going to buy some knee and elbow bandages, I really like the designs of Norse Fitness. How are they compared to brands like SBD, Cerberus or Evolution Athletics? The prices are quite similar, I know SBD is the king but I am really into nordic stuff and the runes and everyhing just ring the bell for me. The materials look also similar so it should be okay imo.
I travel for work & looking for any strongman/powerlifting gyms in NYC or nearby via subway (Queens, Brooklyn etc). Cheers 💪🏼
Did this earlier this month
Tried to sync them up as best as I could, but I feel like the difference in bar speed for about 3 1/2 - 4 months of training is pretty decent. My 1RM conventional is currently 565. I’ve gotten 605 very, very close to lockout, but my glutes and upper back always seem to be the limiting factor in max effort lifts, or I screw up the setup, usually a mix of the two.
Over the past year I've been really pushing my deadlift hard after getting into the sport last spring. The good news is that I hit a few PRs, including finally breaking 500 lbs. The bad news is that I now have two hernias in my groin. Doc says it's not particularly serious at the moment, but I decided to bite the bullet and get the surgery now rather than waiting for things to get worse. So I've got the surgery scheduled for next week.
Anyone been through this before? What was your recovery like? How long until you were able to get back in the gym? How long until you could match your previous strength?
And a 340 push press that was just for fun. So fucking pumped for the log, it’s also my heaviest press ever on a 12” log. Supposed to be an easy week this week but had a very rough anger inducing day, so sometimes you just gotta get back to your roots and lift something heavy.
Is it true that farmers carries train the neck? I heard somewhere that they do but not sure its true. I know they train the trap muscles, but not sure about the neck?
I heard exercises likes shrugs train the traps but not the neck.
I can't tell if farmers carries are worth it to improve your squat? I am not a strong man, just a football player trying to improve my squats and power cleans for football.
I am trying to improve both my power clean max numbers as well as my overall squat numbers. What I have tried doing is squatting heavy once a week and then on my other days adding farmers carries to my routine. I am not certain if the farmer's carries are helpful to improving the squat or if I am better off doing something else.

My pressing sucks. Currently with my deadlift and carrying I could step up a level for my next comp which is my goal. But I’d be zeroing the pressing events at the moment. I’m making pressing my focus and hitting it twice a week. Besides actually practicing with logs, circus dumbbells etc, what lifts have the best carryover? I’m also focussing more on front squat than back squat to improve my front rack position and get comfortable with more weight in the racked position. Cheers
Went up a bit faster than expected 🤣🤣🤣
Does anyone now of some easy to enter, amateur strongman competitions/events in the D.C - Baltimore area. Thanks in advance.
First ever comp win as a novice heavyweight. Only two of in the weight class here this time but I'm still pretty happy. Several PRs for the day.
My overhead has always been behind all my other lifts due to lack of proper training and injuries because of that lack of training. Finally got a decent fix on what my body needs to do for overhead. Took about 3 years from the start of me getting in the gym ro finally figure it out. So anyone out there reading this. IT ALL TAKES TIME. Be patient.
I'm really happy with my log press after this weekend! I did play it safe with my attempts and wish I went a tad higher but live and learn. I hope to crack 200 sometime next year.
Pressing isn’t my strong suit but I’d like to get better at this since it’ll be at more comps in the future at a higher weight. Weight in video is 115 pounds.
How can I improve form? What should I train to become stronger in this lift? I’d like to make my natural weaknesses (AC joint reconstructive surgery 2 years ago and pressing progress has lagged) into my developed strengths.
A couple months ago my gym owner suggested I give strongman a go since the bulk was going well and I thought it sounded like fun! So I signed up for the novice heavyweight division of Scary Strength at Dungeon Fitness near Seattle, WA and I trained for the last few months. I browsed this thread and found some great advice so I really appreciate all of you for your indirect wisdom. Looks like the work paid off as I got first place in the novice heavyweight! I know it’s not crazy impressive because it’s just novice weight but I’m happy with how the lifts went! I’ll try to post more videos but I’m really proud of my Conan’s Wheel and Dinnie Stone!
