First GPS problems, then SD card issues.

Hello folks, currently have a Pi3 Stratux. Purchased sometime in 2021 from Amazon, don't remember exact date. This thing has been rock solid until about three weeks ago when the unit fell off the window and hit the floor of the baggage compartment. And it happened to fall right on the microUSB port. After that the unit wouldn't stay on unless the cable was oriented in a specific way. Ordered a new cable from CrewDog's store on Amazon and that fixed the power issue. However, the GPS started to drop for minutes at a time and sometime entire flights. Occasional ADS-B dropouts too.

Read about how a crappy power cable can make all the difference. I had a fairly robust USB A to microUSB laying around, so I tried that and still had drop out issues. Opened up the unit, superglued all the USB dongles inside to their respective usb ports, made sure they were tight and put it back together again. Next flight, same issues. Took it apart again last night, added a robust 1' USB A to A extension cable and plugged the GPYes card in to that. Applied power, but the unit didn't boot. Tried to reflash the microSD via BalenaEtcher (recommended by Stratux), and seems the SD card corrupted itself. It got super hot and Disk Utility froze. Just bought a new microSD, successfully flashed it, and will try it again tonight with the aforementioned 1' USB extension for the GPYes. Also bought a new GPYes card to try.

Did not update ForeFlight or iOS prior to the issues. The position of the Stratux in the plane prior to the fall (and since) is no different than before - suction cupped to the right rear passenger window. Not surprisingly, the GPS stays locked way better if I put it on the panel with a clear view of the sky from the wind screen. Never had to do this before. However, it still drops about every minute or two, and my magnetic compass shows significant deviation with it up there. Also I fly mostly high wings, sometimes low wings. Problem seems to be present whether the wing is above or below.

So... anyone else have a Stratux that experienced a similar cascading cavalcade of conniptions from a simple drop? If so how did you fix it? At this point I'm pretty sick of throwing money and time at this thing. Seriously considering a Sentry. Hate to spend the money, but I need it to be reliable.

Does (android) Garmin Pilot support Stratux?

Last inquiry I've seen was from about 2 years ago and not many updates or changes to the posts. Has this been added yet? Or is there a way to make it work? If I'm using Garmin, Stratux and an android device then you should've guessed by now Im a cheap SOB. Affordable, cheap and opperational are the goals.

Cannot Get Logged in

Hello all. I just built a Statux kit from Amazon and it all seems to work fine with ForeFlight. My problem is I cannot login to the unit via web browser. I have been getting an ip address of 192.168.10.10 and I have reimaged the software. Any thoughts? I have tried from an iPad and a Mac btw.

Pisugar 3 - UPS for Stratux?

Trying to find a true backup solution in case of a sudden power loss or AHRS system failure. the Anker Powerbanks that are available don't allow for "pass-through charging." (meaning, you can't run the stratux off the Anker powerbank and keep it charged / charging at the same time).

I have powered usb ports in the aircraft I fly that are STC'd and power regulated, which is all fine to plug directly into the stratux assuming everythings working and there's no emergencies like a sudden loss of power, or loss of an alternator, etc. So I thought, there's gotta be a better solution here that basically acts like a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) for the stratux.

I came across this "PiSugar 3" which has a 5000mAh battery (nothing larger i'm afraid out of the box). I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this or has a solution such that the stratux is running on normal aircraft produced power until that power goes away and then starts using the battery as a backup plan. Also I'm not sure how long a 5000mAh battery would last.

Pisugar link I found was here: https://www.tindie.com/products/pisugar/pisugar-3-plus-battery-for-raspberry-pi-3b3b4b/

Serial adapter does not fit with GPYes?

Am I missing something or do I need to switch to the normal external gps that plugs in to the USB. The serial adapter does not fit next to the GPYes.

New build / best modules

I fly a larger pressurized cabin class aircraft, a 421B. I have glass in cockpit but I still use ForeFlight for my main maps, charts, plates, etc. I have an onboard L-3 NGT-9000 transponder which is a combined transponder / traffic / weather ads-b in / out. Problem is it doesn’t give attitude or pressure. Fine for the onboard deck but not so great for a backup AHRS solution if I happen to have a really bad day of instrument failure. I always like to have triple redundancy.

so that all said I don’t think the stratux.me website has kept up with the latest hardware to use. What works best nowadays if I’m doing a new build and I want complete AHRS, GPS, Pressure, ADS-B? What pi works best? Can one of the new pi zero w be used?

Switching from Pi 3 Model B to Pi 4 Model B

I tried replacing the Pi 3 in my Stratux with a Pi 4, because it has a USB-C for the power input. However, the Stratux doesn't boot up with the Pi 4. When I reinstall the Pi 3, it works fine. Any ideas?

Stratux education

Hi everyone, I recently designed and built a stratux receiver that I shared on here. I want to learn more about how the ADS-B actually works and how someone came up with the stratux open source software. Are there any good sources to learn about this? Thanks

Is Raspberry PI 4 compatible?

I see on the stratux website the PI 4 is in the list of replacement parts, however it seams like the micro HDMI ports will not line up with the large HDMI port.

Stratux network GPS input

Hello, I am trying to configure my Stratux setup that’s on a Raspberry Pi 4 to receive network GPS into the Raspberry Pi Ethernet port. Intent is for it to receive network GPS via Ethernet and broadcast it over the Stratux wifi it provides to Foreflight, any help?

Stratux read-only mode

Hey everyone. Just recently built my first unit, and I would like to not have to worry about shutting it down gracefully after every flight. I understand that this may corrupt the SD card, so I was looking around for a read-only mod to the software. I found a few links but the most recent is 8 years old and the source scripts are no longer available.

Is there any modern consensus on how to shut the unit down after flying? Does everyone just connect to the interface and shut the software down before disconnecting the power? Thanks!

Stratux seems to drop out periodically during flight

Anyone experience this? I just got it and I'm using it with a VX-162. I connect it to foreflight, but every so often (maybe 3 or 4 times in 1.5hrs) it'll drop out and I see "No GPS" on foreflight.

Some traffic not displaying?

Long time Stratux user, about 7 years. Just recently was able to fly with a friend who has a Sentry and have noticed some of the traffic he has showing on his screen, was not showing on mine.

As this is the 1st time I've flown with someone with a different ADSB device, I have no idea how long this has been happening. However a few weeks ago, an aircraft that called inbound to the airport we were inbound also did not show up on ADSB so I assume it's happening regularly. I queried the other aircraft and he had working ADSB-out and he could see us on his screen.

So the question is, what settings would I need to adjust to ensure I'm receiving all traffic? Yes, I have "show distant traffic" on Foreflight enabled.

Considering moving to a Sentry as I lost confidence in the Stratux after seeing my friend's screen with the Sentry and the traffic I may miss.

SDR cooling fan.

Is there anyway that the unit can control my second cooling fan for the SDRs? I have the AHRS and auto control for the CPU fan as well. I'm flying in a helicopter so noise is not an issue lol. Just curious.

Thanks,

Ron

New release backward compatible to older devices?

What is the SD card size requirement for a current release? or rather, what's the last version to fit in 2GB? I have a prebuilt one that's running 1.4r5. The card appears to be 2GB. The latest image 1.6r1-eu031 is 2.6G, which is larger. I don't think it'll fit. The second-to-last image on cyoung (1.6r1-377d) is still 2 GB while the last one is also 2.6G. I probably don't need the latest ver but I do like to have passthrough wifi working, which comes in 1.5.

Low UAT in messages

I have a Stratux with the two stratux branded SDR installed. I tried to use the antennas that came with the SDRs, as well as with a TED transponder antenna that's on the belly of the plane, but always get very little UAT messages.

Is there something else I should try to improve this so I get some useful FIS-B info out of the stratux?

No traffic displaying

I see this is an oft-asked question, but nothing answered my particular issue.

New main board, but discovered it was an SD Card issue that was stopping the boot up. Now I can see, and connect to the stratux on Foreflight, but I'm not getting traffic or my township.

I downloaded the Android Stratux app and it doesn't seem to see the Stratux at all - it reports "No fix, no stratux heartbeat, no UAT support in HW".

I have the case open and have tried reseating the 3 plugin modules, but to no avail. I hope this is an easy fix as I've spent too much time and money on trying to make this work and am ready to throw it in the bin and buy a Sentry. I need this to work, and now!

Stratux GitHub master branch explanation

All your Stratux code base are now belong to b3nn0 (Adrian). To reduce confusion with releases and where to find information, the cyoung Stratux repo has been deprecated with an updated README.

u/strangerwithadvice (cyoung) left the project in 2020 to pursue other endeavors but development and maintenance has continued since then. If you'd like to help please join our Discord server: https://discord.gg/D9NQ6xe4nF

Even though the new repo says "Stratux - European edition" it still works great for US users. There is always a US and Europe tagged release. Website links, Reddit links, and all new releases will now point to: https://github.com/b3nn0/stratux

Stratux EU032 (pre-release) just dropped

Stratux EU032 (pre-release) just dropped. It's the master branch for all US, Europe, and world-wide users. Updates include migration to the "ogn-tracker," which adds support for newer T-Beam variants and experimental support for T-Beam S3. It also adds experimental NMEA output via Bluetooth, allowing SkyDemon connections via BLE, and basic support for the Cursor-On-Target protocol.

Bug fixes include improved detection of the BMP280 sensor (AHRS) and better serial port baud rate detection for USB-based GPS devices. The update switches to the latest Raspberry Pi OS image and addresses several minor issues.

Stratux website links now point to this release. https://github.com/b3nn0/stratux/releases/tag/v1.6r1-eu032

Power

Has anyone else had a problem with the board killing itself? I will plug it into my battery pack the red light will start to blink for 1 or 2 seconds and then just turn back off. If I unplug and replug it does it again. Is this a problem with software or is the raspberry pi going bad? I’ve had it and used it almost daily for 6 months. Any help would be great!

Setting default orientation for AHRS axes.

Is there a way to change the default axes orientation for the AHRS?

My stratux is always mounted in the same orientation, but even after following the calibration procedure it will usually have at least one axis on the wrong orientation.

SDR Needs to be Plugged and Unplugged Multiple Times to Work Properly

https://preview.redd.it/wi6iglji9mnd1.jpg?width=1068&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4bd5a3187e88231fb900ac142ffc00f3d2250522

Recently, when using my Stratux, I found that every time I power on the Raspberry Pi, it fails to correctly recognize the SDR on the USB port. As shown in the screenshot, I can only get it to work properly after plugging and unplugging it several times. Could anyone please explain why this happens?

Additionally, I'm not very familiar with the debugging process. What logs and information should I provide?

Stratux on a BeagleBone Black?

I've seen a few things listed on this but nothing definite. I came into a collection of new BBBs (my work ordered them but found they couldn't be used for compliance issues so gave them away to anyone interested) and have been interested in the Stratux for a while, especially now that it has Garmin Pilot support. I've seen some talk about Stratux working with the BBB, but nothing for certain. I know that Beagle-Pi emulator would probably be the easiest way to make it work, but am interested in using this project to learn more about the BBB and programming in general if possible. Any information/resources would be appreciated. Thanks!

Stopped working

9/10/2024 - SOLVED!!!!

I've had my Stratux for probably 7 years. I've used it a fair amount and it's lived in AZ all that time, so it gets hot. In the last year it's been very difficult to get it to start up and connect to the satellites. So much so, that the only way to get it running has been to give it a hard whack (which, I'm sure hasn't helped!!).

I went to pick up a plane in TX this last week with a new owner and nothing would make it start, which made for a very interesting trip home. After getting back I changed power sources, reflashed the SD card that came with it originally with the latest build 3-4 times (Balena reported a success each time), tried another Huawai SD card that I had used in an old phone and had flashed with the OS. Nothing. I get a solid red, and a few brief flashes of green on connecting the power.

I connected a monitor to it, but didn't capture the whole startup list of reports. However, the last doxen or so lines are in the image below. There are 2 instances of "kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown block(179,2)". On reading about this, most people fixed it by either reflashing, or by running fsck on the card. Not sure how to run fsck as I use Windows 10 and, I believe, that's a Linux command.

Another thing, which may or may not be related, the fan does not start when power is connected. I don't remember if that happened straight away (when the Stratux was working), or whether it started after the boot had occurred.

I would like to fix it as the alternative is $400 (Sentry Mini - which does have some advantages) and I hate throwing stuff away, but I've already spent nearly a whole day fiddling with this, and I'm almost ready to bin it!!

Best GPS For Stratux

Just as the title says. I’m looking for personal experiences with the following GPS units -

GPYes
VK-162
Adafruit Ultimate GPS

If you use one with no external antenna (such as GPYes 2.0), are there any reception issues?
