New to Statesboro, Looking to meet friends

Hey everyone, I’m not sure if this is the right route to go but I recently moved to Statesboro after a pretty dark chapter in my life, and I’m looking to meet some people around my age that like to go out on occasion, or play video games, or something. I’m 36, I drink socially but not often, I’m a huge nerd (DnD, Video Games, Comics, Star Wars, all that.) , I love karaoke (It’s been years but I was a vocalist in a few rock bands), bar games, live music…There’s not much I won’t at least try.

I’m kind of getting a little culture shock here, as I’ve lived in Phoenix, Arizona my entire life, so I’m used to the big city. I’m also not religious( more agnostic if I have to label myself) or political at all, and from what I can tell that seems to be a pretty big theme out here. I’m not complaining, just making an observation from my experiences so far.

I moved here with my parents temporarily while I rebuild and get my shit straight, and also to help them out because they’re getting older( My siblings all stayed behind, things just kind of lined up that way and I wasn’t in the position to refuse the offer) , and that by itself is pretty embarrassing at times.

So I guess I’m here on a journey of the self, or something, but I can feel relocation depression trying to sink its roots in, and I’d like to do my best to avoid it. I’ve agreed to remain here for a year, but I am not entirely against staying should I enjoy it or put some roots down.

The whole idea of looking for friends on the internet is foreign to me, and if I’m being honest I feel weird about it, but I’m giving it a shot I guess. I kind of bounce between introvert/extrovert, and I enjoy my alone time, but it’s weighing on me. It would be nice to get out and have a good time now and then.

Outside of that, this place is beautiful, and not being in such a fast past environment is definitely a different kind of experience.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read this, and I appreciate any responses or tips or really any feedback at all.

Help me out

I'm somewhat new here and am suffering from culture shock. I feel like there is zero to do here if you don't go to church and work from home. I'm on the struggle bus to meet new people. I tried to take an art class, but it was canceled. Tried to switch to a different one, couldn't get any one to answer the phone or respond to an email. Too late to join any, so when I took a half day to go vote, swung by to get my refund for the class to find out the 1 and only individual with access to the phone and email was out of town. Have people here not heard of a back up or an out of office message? I'm finding when I email business or call response times are nonexistent, to include the chamber of commerce. I'm trying to get involved with my new hometown community, but it feels like the Universe is telling me to forget it and move somewhere else and just cut my losses. Tell me this is a phase and it'll get better.

Update: For those asking, my interests: I love comedy, good food, shooting pool, I was wanting to try improv and art classes, I like book clubs and I'm open to new things as well. I'm just not a religious person and I don't have kids so I have found it's making very hard to make friends in an appropriate age group. I'm happily married and 42. He's 49.

Good Roofing Company

Hi all!

I manage a building downtown and need some work done to the roof. There’s a leak and I do know of at least one intrusion spot, but there are likely others. Anyone you’ve used and recommend?

Bulloch County Utilities (Crossposted)

Hello,

I crossposted this in the Savannah reddit as well.

My husband and I purchased a house with some acreage in Bulloch County (Brooklet, south of 16), and we are moving from out of state in the next month. I'm currently looking into utilities and have some questions:

Excelsior vs Georgia Power for electric? Does anybody have a preference for one over the other?

High speed internet -- I see Bulloch Solutions. Any other good options?

Any cleaning services (for cleaning the house before we move in) or locksmiths (for rekeying) you recommend?

EDITED TO ADD: I'd also love any fencing company recommendations specifically for livestock fencing!

Thanks in advance!

Missing Cat in Statesboro

My indoor only cat, Cheddar, slipped out of our house on Wednesday morning 10/3 near Daylight Donuts on S College St. Cash reward if found- no questions asked. We miss our boy and just want him home. Please keep an eye out in the Statesboro area! 🫶🏻

Frontier Internet

I see posts about Vyve being the worse but I would submit Frontier as well. First, when you call customer service, technical support, or, basically, anybody, it is routed to a customer call center in India. Needless to say, they have no idea what's going on in our little corner of Georgia beyond the script on their screen. I called Sunday after power was restored to let them know about the Internet. The expected restoration? Monday by 10:00 p.m. WRONG. Then, Tuesday by 5:00 p.m. WRONG. Then, Thursday by 5:00 p.m. WRONG. Now, if we weren't 100% streaming at home then maybe we could get by but now it's getting kind of ridiculous! I know the storm wrecked havoc on everything but I don't understand how some people have their Internet restored and, seven days later, ours is still out. Any thoughts?

Road Conditions?

UPDATE: I got back to Statesboro safely! All the lights along Veteran’s Memorial are working again. The only light I encountered that wasn’t is the one next to Parker’s on Lanier. Thank you so much for letting me know how road conditions were throughout the week

The other day, I left Statesboro and all the traffic lights were broken or completely gone. I go to GSU and I’m waiting for the all clear, but have they started fixing any of the lights yet? (Especially the ones on Veteran’s Mem)

It was an absolute nightmare getting out and I really don’t want to deal with that a second time

If anyone goes through those areas, please keep me updated

top 3 places to eat in town?

let's say you had guests from out of town and want to impress them with what the area has to offer so they can quit wondering why you live "out here". i would say no $90 meals as i can't afford those and that's not a fair comparison vs a $20 meal. like what would you stake your reputation on to recommend? bordering counties are ok

where do you go for car repair?

i've gone to 10 places around here and am open to going to pooler/augusta for competent work that doesn't involve waiting 2 days for it to maybe be started on/done and then maybe not be done properly. i don't know if my expectations are too high, but i'm paying higher than Atlanta prices out here for incompetent diagnoses or slow incomplete repairs with no recourse other than to just not come back.
